Could you please let everyone know that we have decided on a name and we will publish the results to you, face book members and club members probably next week.

(maybe by Thursday so you can publish it Friday if you would like.) We need to secure the DBA before we announce the new name. Thanks sooooo much with all the help.

Eve,
We got bad news last week. It appears that the Nickel and Nickel company hold the rights to the word “dragonfly” used in any context within the wine industry. Their lawyer has asked us to stop using the name immediately.
As we respect their request, its not news we were expecting. This means we are going to have to come up with a new name for Dragonfly Winery and relaunch the label. We are going to keep the logo and layout of the label exactly the same but we are going to have to replace the name with something else.

As you know, it took years for us to come up with a name so it won’t be an easy task seeing we are passionate about the name and brand. Any ideas on a name that works with our logo and label? Let us know, we are open to suggestions.

Maybe your readers have some ideas???

That’s the latest. I wish it was good news.

  1. How about:

    “Dragon” (wrong image?)

“Dragonflutter, Dragonflitter” (too close to copywrighted name?)

    “Flutterwing” (made up)

  2. I expected no less from a linguist. All good. I like flutter and wing the best and will pass along.

  3. Eve, Here are some of the suggestions we have gotten.

Thanks everyone for your help. If we end up using a name suggested, we will send the person that suggested it a free bottle of our double gold medal winner 2007 #2 Zinfandel.

MeadowHawk: This is a form of a Dragonfly
Shadowfly: This is a form of a Dragonfly
Pulchella: This is a form of a California Dragonfly
Libellula: This is the exact translation of the word Dragonfly in Italian.
Hollenross: Translates into Dragonfly or goddess’ horse
    Skimmer Ridge: ???
Dragon Ridge: A stretch to keep the word Dragon on the label
Nymph Ridge: Nymph is the form on a dragonfly before it has wings.
Virago: Both of our daughter’s (Grace and Olivia) names mixed up.
    Dragon Valley: ???
Sand Dragon: Form of a desert Dragonfly

  4. Ok, we’re cooking now. Tell me your favorites from the comments above, or a new suggestion, and I’ll e-blast Dear Wine Friend subscribers (free) this Friday. We should have it down to a few by then!

  5. How about Odonata. Odonata is an order of insects, encompassing dragonflies.
Only bug people would know what it means unfortunately, but it’s also an interesting name.

  6. OIABMOTS, aka Sharon T,:

Odonata was one of my husband’s suggestions which Steve also found to be a copyright issue. We really liked the name too.

    Tricky isn’t this?

  7. Odonata was taken already too. 🙁
The good thing about trademarks is once you have one you are good. The problem with them is that everything is trademarked??? We have had some suggestions of getting away from dragonfly themes and going with anything that the logo can symbolize. We are open to this idea as well. Here’s afew examples.

    Flight
    Evolution
    Fossill Rigde

    etc.

  8. Susan,

I went to the site; Damselflies are pretty! I sent your suggestion onto Steve Lemley too.

  9. Meganeura is one name of a prehistoric dragonfly. There may be others…

  10. Thank you guys for all the suggestions and help in assisting us with this. Keep them coming, we are writing them all down and reviewing them everyday.

  11. Steve,

Sorry to hear about the name issue. Can you share why you chose it in the first place?

    In the meantime, what about:
    Petalura [http://www.threatenedspecies.environment.nsw.gov.au/tsprofile/profile.aspx?id=10600]

I’m looking forward to trying your wines at CalArts at the end of the month. I’ve seen some bottles in a locker near mine at All Corked Up. Is this your locker?

    Good luck.

  12. Reason for name:

As our wine got good, we started getting offers from people to buy the wine but couldn’t sell it because it wasn’t produced under a bonded commercial winery license. We struggled with a name for almost two years. Then one September night after a full day of harvest and fermentation duties, we decided to completely remodel the winery. At about 2 am, after hours and hours of work, we both took a deep breath and as we admired the results, a dragonfly flew between both of our heads, landed on one of our barrels and enjoyed the moment with us. And that’s how Dragonfly Winery got its name.

  13. Here’s another suggestion:

    Silver Fly.
I did a quick search on Google and the only significant thing that came up was Silver Fly Jewelry.

  15. More suggestions:

    * Free flight – because they can fly at up to 30mph and make it look to effortless

    * Skimmer – they always used to skim our swimming pool growing up, seems that they take to wine barrels as well 🙂

    * Dasher or Silver Dasher – “blue dasher” is a type of firefly, they’re really pretty and actually look silver! here’s a picture: http://bit.ly/npeu6

Just a few thoughts that came to mind.

    Good Luck!!

  16. A Dragonfly symbolizes Prosperity. So why not call it Prosperity or something similar?
