HumpDay with Chef 101: Supermarket Mishaps

  1. This is all good advice. I love to cook but I only learned recently that those little spice jars shouldn't be in my cabinet more longer than a year or so. I had to toss out a few that I've had since I got married—10 years ago.

I miss Bristol Farms because their meat and seafood departments were great. They'd tell me how much I needed, and they'd actually cut a piece of meat down to size if I needed it.

The bag thing is so ridiculous. If I hand you 6 canvas bags don't ask me if I want paper or plastic. Seriously?

  2. Now, the question is, my recipe for tonight calls for cornstarch, do I fortify myself with a little Limoncello before braving said Ralphs? (I think I tossed it as it was from my wedding year too – 1986 Mo!)

  3. This is SO funny, Eve. I love how your mind works and you can turn such a mundane thing into a very entertaining blog.

A side note on buying wine in certain grocery stores…when visiting local wine country – Los Olivos, Paso Robles or Temecula, I say DO go to the local markets in said towns to purchase wine. This told to me by a few people until I "braved" the market on my getaway and saw for myself. One particular winemaker friend in Los Olivos and a B & B owner in Paso told me you can find great local wineries' wines and fire sales, too at almost 1/2 the price of the winery.

My neighbor shared a $45 Hart wine that he bought at the Temecula Albertsons for $28, same wine! Los Olivos Grocery, Buellton Albetson's and Paso Robles Albertson's are stops on our trips now to see what they have on the shelves. I've had some surprising finds.

  4. Thanks for reading Diane – I did have fun writing it though I'm afraid Ralph's might be angry if they get wind of it.

That's also great advice about finding great wine in wine area grocery stores! I gotta look into that one!
