I had a great surprise one recent Sunday while enjoying a BBQ bratwurst during one of Valencia Wine Company’s events: Doug Gould, a favorite wine aficionado/entrepreneur came in as well to share a meal, and his own private label of his newly launched “Short lil Bastard”. I learned that Short lil Bastard wine, a Bordeaux blend made for Doug at our very own Leona Valley Winery, is just the tip of the many new items he has coming our way.
1. Doug, please tell readers where the idea of Short lil Bastard came from?
I was looking to play in the wine world and a friend asked me if I had ever thought about having my own label. After she asked I thought what the hell would I call it.
It hit me, no one was marketing to short guys so I thought hey that’s so me, so I ran with the name, and a brand was born.
I am working on three more wines to add to the “Short lil Bastard” wine line by years end.
2. What have you also planned in the Napoleon Complex line? What will the name of the website be?
Napoleon Complex was the first wine from Short lil Bastard. I will have a cigar, coffee, and clothing with the same name here soon. Each time I release a new wine label (“Short Man Syndrome” is next) there will be a cigar, coffee and clothing to go with the new label. “Court Jester” will follow. I hope to add Sake and Beer within the next 12 months. My website is currently under construction but it will be “ShortlilBastard.com
3. Tell us, will we find many Short lil Bastards at your upcoming Beer Fest? And what can guests expect at that event, details please!
Of course, anywhere there is fun you will find a legion of SLBs. The first Beer Festival in Santa Clarita will be here on Sept 10th, this year. Although I love wine I also have an affinity for great beer. I have been involved with many events out here and I know we have lacked a beer festival, so I thought, why not? Lets do it. There will be dozens of craft and micro brews, live music, education classes, and much more. Beer lovers will be able to enjoy unlimited beer for three hours per session (two of them) for only $ 40.00. All the info is at SCVbeerfestival.com
4. How can people find out about your events? Via SCV Wine Enthusiasts on Meetup.com or Facebook? How can people find you?
For the wine lovers they can find all the fun we are having at SCVwineenthusiasts.com, and also find me on Facebook. I will be starting a beer enthusiasts group within the next week where we will enjoy micros and crafts as a group. Yes, of course it will be paired with great food, music and times.
5. I know some of the private chefs like Tonino Cardia, formerly of Cavi on Lyons, and Jim Schaffert, of Cuisine on Scene, cater for your SCV Wine Enthusiast tastings. Do you have anything planned for August and beyond yet?

I just finished an amazing Sake event with a great Sake Master, Yoshi Murakami. We have had Italian, Greek, and Spanish events along with a multiple wine bar adventures, with more coming with both Tonino, Jim and other great chefs.
