Third Annual Ventura County Valentine N’Wine: A Story in Photos

This event, the third through the Ventura County Winery Association for a weekend of tasting centered around Valentine’s Day, was a first for me.

It began with a one hour drive to Camarillo and Oxnard.  Armed only with a map, pen, pad and a blended mocha, I foraged to parts unknown to me…as a wine destination.  I only had the Friday of the three-day fest (February 10-12 LINK for website.) so I missed two of the seven locations because of their business hours.  (My beloved Four Brix Winery opens at 4pm on Fridays and the Camarillo Custom Crush tasting room is only open weekends.)  No worries – as I’ll be back.  The one thing I learned was that I needed more time.

Anyway, I thought it was a great idea and so did all of the couples out celebrating not only Valentines Day but also an extension of an anniversary, or in advance of a birthday.  The same couples seem to trail me as that Friday morning ebbed into a lazy Friday afternoon, I on a mission to sample from wineries new to me and then drive the hour distance home to the SCV, while they were being romanced by the grape:

Greeted by this at my first stop: Cantara Cellars
We tasted 5 wines, and this Cantara 10 Albarino had an outstanding crisp green apple flavor that lingered on my palate and memory.
Bella Victorian Vineyards had a lovely bistro attached.

Bella Victorian Syrah, that they gave us homemade chocolate truffles to pair with, was one of 4 reds I tried and this one boasted a 91 pt score from WE. Wines are named after family members, with local fruit as well as sources in Napa and Sta. Hills.

Vince Pantess San Vicente Cellars - photo from website. These were my favorite wines of the day - all 5: 2010 Viognier, his 09's of Grenache, Tempranillo, Syrah and Sangio
Magnavino - this sign failed to do justice to the expanse of the interior. Nice place, nice people. I enjoyed their '10 Viognier and 09 Zin the most.
Herzog - Nothing advertised it as a kosher winery...but if I were kosher I would visit the place. The dining room looked emacualte. The wine does go through a "flash-heated process of pasteurization". I liked the Chard and late harvest Riesling.
