Eve’s One Bottle Post: 2010 Napa Valley Zinfandel, Turley Estate

What is all the fuss about?  Another cult winery, with another wait-listed membership, is it worth it?  With Turley…I’m thinking YES.

One bottle, one night, one pasta in a red sauce that was full of fennel, onions, red bell peppers, anchovy, tomatoes, raisins, capers, olives, chicken demi-glace, garlic, sugar, stock…

And the Turley killed it.  All I knew during dinner was that the wine was outstanding…but my review would have to wait until after I cleaned up.

  I sat down with my glass, sans food, and an hour of aeration, and noted:

Color: Deep garnet, paler ruby-garnet edge.

Aromas: Spiced dark plums, dark cherry, milk chocolate, toasted oak…

Taste: Balanced tannins, dark berries, cigar, stewed mushroom, rich dark earth….more fruit came through as I was tasting, possibly due to the aeration.

Finish:  Counting from 1-10, as I was taught in my Wine and Spirits Education Trust sommelier course, 1-3 would be short, 4-6 would be medium, 6 and on would be long.  I prayed for long.  So, with a deep, thoughtful swallow, I counted…1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13…OMG.

I went to the Turley website, to look to see what I might find in regards to wines, winemaker, philosophy and there is nothing but an email sign up for when the time comes that they are open for new membership.  This is what I received via return email:
