Tasting 2013: My Opinion of the 2016 Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux U.S. Tour

  1. Thanks for the report Eve. It was great seeing you both at the event and taste a ‘chunk’ of the 2013 Bordeaux. I agree with you – it is merely impossible to slap a general label on entire vintage in any region in any year, but I think it is fair to say that 2013 Bordeaux presented many challenges for the vignerons. Despite the very challenging growing season some nice wines emerged. The dry white and Sauternes ‘stickies’ seemed to liked the weather and I loved a lot of them. In dry reds category I really liked some of the overachievers such as Beaumont, Camensac and La Lagune. Among the ‘bigger’ names I thought the Chateau Lascombes, Leoville Poyferre and Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion were all very nice.
Here is the question of the day – are the chateaux going to lower their high prices for the 2013 vintage? Judging by pricing practices of previous, similarly less successful years in Bordeaux, I’m not holding my breath. Cheers!

    1. First, thanks for reading and commenting. Second, I appreciate your more educated opinion, more info on the Sauternes (yes, they were loved!) and sharing some of your personal favorites from the tasting. As far as price, I totally agree with you, anything to get a wine drinker to purchase an “affordable” Bordeaux is a good thing.
