Two from Timmy: Sans Liege The Offering and Dilecta Unorthodox

I have more than one friend that knows much more about wine from drinking alone than I do via classes and tastings, and Timmy is one of them. This week I have two of Timmy’s finds to rate, as even though he knows best, he has grown to trust my growing knowledge, and I’m honored that he even asks for my opinion. Now, onto the wines:

2012 Sans Liege The Offering

From Facebook: Sans Liege is a Rhone varietal project working with fruit from Paso down to Santa Barbara. The concept of “without allegiance” is not one of rebellion but rather an acknowledgment that these varietals do not have a history here on the central coast…(see more: https://www.facebook.com/SansLiegeWines/?fref=ts)

Eve’s Tasting Notes

Aromas of over-steeped black tea, black currant, cracked black and green peppercorns, mint and a general sense of the forest after the rain. The taste was similar with some of the notes – the black tea – showing, as well as dusty black fruit, firm tannins but not too dry.

I had opened this up before a pasta dinner and waited to have it with food. It complemented the hearty meat and Italian sausage in the tomato sauce, but didn’t soften the black fruit and other flavor components. Might go better with a charred steak, as the charring adds an element of sweetness.

Eve’s Tasting Notes

Dark blackberry, blueberry, plum jam, milk chocolate and sweet pipe cigar smoke were all on the nose, followed by flavors of blue to black fruit, balsamic vinegar, black pepper, brambles, dust, olive oil and a very long lasting tannin profile. 90 Eve pts.
