Limoneira, a Ventura County Treasure of Lemon Everything, by Barbara Barrielle

January 22, 2015 by evebushman

Limoneira is one of the largest producers of citrus in North America and it is headquartered in charming Santa Paula. Limoneira lemons, other citrus and avocados appear in so much of what we eat, drink and use in our daily lives.

Limoneira photo 1I knew little about this publicly-traded company that has over 3500 acres of agricultural lands under cultivation until they sponsored a Lemon-based Mixology contest, or a “Lemon Mix-off” at the Sofitel in November to kick off an international series of mixology contests in New York, Chicago, Hong Kong and other venues.

Some of the best mixologists in LA came together to compete in a lemon-based cocktail mash-up that judged their creations on creativity, texture and downright use of lemon flavor.

Also at the event were local spirits producers that are customers of Limoneira and use their lemons in their own expressions of flavor. Ventura Limoncello and Greenbar Craft Distillery’s organic spirits are stand-outs among local producers. Diabolo French Soda and Four Brix Winery rounded out the Ventura County purveyors at this inaugural LA bash.

Patrick Reynolds, bartender at Wildcat Lounge and the “Farm to Bar” columnist at the Santa Barbara Independent, created the “ManawaTrois” a spicy, complex and refreshing concoction that triumphed over creations from other top LA bartenders. Reynolds will now compete internationally against victors from Limoneira cocktail contests around the world. His ManawaTrois recipe is below.limoneira photo 2

The Limoneira Company also makes a full line of body, face and lip products, all with healthy lemon as their main ingredient. Funny how this 120 year old Santa Paula company has reach far beyond Ventura County and is integral in so much of what we drink, eat and slather on! www.limoneira.com.

Manāw a trois by Patrick Reynolds

Translated, Manāwa means “lemon” in Thai. In this Thai-inspired cocktail, lemons are used three ways.

Perlis Picks: The Scholium Project

December 6, 2014 by Michael Perlis

The Scholium Project

http://scholiumwines.com/

The last time [and first time] I met Abe Schoener and his minions, it was in Los Angeles and he was discussing the great overriding importance of the husbandry of microbes in winemaking and how the microscopic critters at his winery The Scholium Project are essentially left alone to do their own thing. So much emphasis was put on this topic that I half expected, upon actually visiting the winery, to see a vision of Abe, assistant winemaker Alex and pretty-much-handler-of-everything-else Brenna stirring cauldrons of steaming microbes and muttering incantations.

Brenna

Brenna

Well, for those of you who go in for those sort of things, you’d be disappointed. Part, of me, admittedly, was too. Instead, Abe was out of town, heading back from tending to business at Red Hook Winery [the New York project he is involved with], Alex was unloading grapes, and Brenna was doing everything else, in this case driving a truck to be filled with cases of wine to be delivered.

We got to the winery by heading East from Sonoma, driving past the Napa Valley [I’ve heard there are some good wineries there too], and ending up in a fairly industrial section of Suisan Valley, just as Brenna showed up in the aforementioned truck.

And, unfortunately, we were disappointed again upon entering the winery. No smoldering cauldrons or magical spells, just a small lab and a barrel room of neatly stacked wine barrels. But, ah, those barrels. That’s where the magic happens. There, and in the vineyards, some of them neglected, that Abe so tirelessly searches out.

That day, in spite of it being at the tail end of crazily busy harvest, Brenna hosted my wife Karen and me in the winery, providing us with samples, mostly from barrel, of the results of recent harvests.

We tried the following [from barrel unless noted]

13 Camilla (out of bottle) [Sauvignon Blanc from Farina Vineyards on Sonoma Mountain, 48 cases made]

14 Naucratis [Verdelho from Lost Slough Vineyard]

14 VLV [Verdelho from Bokisch Ranches in Lodi]

14 Unnamed Pinot Gris

14 FTP [Pinot Gris from Kirschenmann Ranch in Lodi. The vineyard in owned by Turley winemaker’s Tegan Passalaqua. The “F” preceding the “TP” indicates Abe’s “intensity of respect and affection” for Tegan.]

14 Sylphs [Chardonnay from the Guman Vineyards in Napa]

13 Sylphs [Chardonnay from the Guman Vineyards in Napa]

14 Prince in His Caves [Sauvignon Blanc from Farina Vineyards]

13 Prince in His Caves (out of bottle) [This probably the wine from Abe that I likely look forward to the most annually. Rich and rewarding, with a finish that I couldn’t quite identify until we finished the bottle at dinner that evening. The butterscotch pudding matched perfectly!]

14 FTPZ [Zinfandel from Tegan’s vineyard.]

12 Wolfskill Cabernet Reserve [from the Wolfskill Vineyard In Suisan Valley]

13 Wolfskill Cabernet

13 1MN (out of bottle) [Cinsault from the Bechtold Ranch in Lodi. I’ve had other Cinsaults from this vineyard, none richer than this one.]

Lots of interesting flavors here. Some recognizable, others not. Some wines still fermenting, you can hear the hiss and taste the slight spritz of the microbes doing their work.

The wines are given names that suit Abe and what he feels about this vineyards – his previous existence teaching classics at St. John’s presumably facilitates this. The wines are not manipulated to taste a certain way; they come out like they are supposed to. Sometimes this takes longer than other times. Occasionally, it doesn’t happen at all, although I expect that is happening less and less often as Abe perfects his craft.

I’ve said this before, but I think it bears repeating — Abe and his team to do not make wine for casual quaffing.

Have them with your meal or by themselves, but pay attention to them. You actually don’t need me to tell you that, as you will have no choice. There is no guarantee you will like them all. But they all make you sit up and take notice. You’ll occasionally find them on restaurant lists, but the best way to locate them is to check out the winery’s website.

He has had the good fortune of having numerous mentors to show him the way, as well as a wonderful wife who encourages him and shares his interest. U.S. Named Country of Honor for Wine and Spirits Vinexpo 2015 in Bordeaux

December 4, 2014 by evebushman

The world’s leading show for wine and spirits professionals, Vinexpo 2015 has designated the U.S. as its first-ever Country of Honor – a distinction that will give the American wine industry maximum exposure throughout the show. Themed “Taste the Unexpected,” Vinexpo 2015 will be held June 14-18 at Bordeaux’s Parc des Expositions, overlooking a scenic lake and just minutes from the historic town center and some of the world’s most storied vineyards.

image001Special events throughout Vinexpo 2015 will shine a spotlight on the U.S. wine industry. American wineries will be showcased in the center of the exhibition area, which will feature as many as 2,400 exhibitors from 44 wine- and spirits-producing countries around the world.

The Country of Honor designation acknowledges the U.S.’s ascendancy as the world’s top wine-consuming nation.

A 2014 Vinexpo-commissioned study by International Wine and Spirit Research revealed that in 2011 the U.S. surpassed France and Italy to lead the world in wine consumption in both volume and value. The study, which analyzed results from 2007-2012 to forecast market trends through 2017, also reported the following:

· The U.S is the third largest wine importer worldwide, including still, light and sparkling wines.
· The U.S. is the fourth largest wine producer in the world and the sixth largest exporter.
· Between 2012 and 2016, American annual wine consumption is projected to grow by more than 12 percent, or 40.5 million cases.
· Consumption of spirits in the U.S. reached 190.87 million cases in 2011 (up 7.6% from 2007), and should increase by another 8.

7% by 2016. Vodka, rum and bourbon are the top-selling spirits in the U.S. market.
· The U.S. is the world’s largest market for tequila, well ahead of Mexico.

A prominent U.S. presence among buyers and exhibitors
Held in Bordeaux every odd-numbered year, Vinexpo drew 48,000 professional visitors in 2013, of which Americans represented the second largest segment of international attendees. The U.S. continues to rank among the top 10 exhibiting countries, and the 2013 show was no exception with wineries from California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Texas, New York, and Connecticut well-represented on the exhibition floor.

An American in “Little Paris” image002
Apart from a full schedule of workshops, conferences, and networking events, Vinexpo participants can spend their leisure time exploring this lively riverside city, nicknamed “Little Paris” for its classic stone architecture and cosmopolitan flair. The UNESCO World Heritage List has singled out Bordeaux’s historic center as “an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble,” whose myriad attractions include the 17-arch Pont de Pierre bridge, Public Gardens, the neoclassical Grand Theatre, a wealth of museums, and shop-lined Rue Sainte-Catherine – Europe’s longest pedestrian street. Venturing outside the historic center, visitors can tour the world’s second-largest wine-growing region, whose prestigious vineyards include, among others, Canon Fronsac, Saint Emilion, Médoc, Graves and Sauternes.

About Vinexpo
Founded in 1981, Vinexpo has evolved into the world’s leading show for wine and spirits professionals and a partner for the wine and spirits industry worldwide. Vinexpo is held in Bordeaux in odd-numbered years; since 2006, Vinexpo Asia-Pacific has taken place in Hong Kong in even-numbered years and has become the key exhibition of the industry in Asia. Before each exhibition, Vinexpo commissions studies on industry-specific issues and presents the findings in conferences around the world. Since 1999, it has produced a world market study with a five-year outlook, as well as a variety of trend reports. For more information, visit www.vinexpo.com.

Vineyard & Winery Management Names Industry’s ’20 Most Admired’ – Second annual list recognizes North American winemakers

November 24, 2014 by evebushman

Santa Rosa, Calif. – The cover feature for the November-December 2014 issue of Vineyard & Winery Management (V&WM) magazine, a bimonthly trade publication covering the North American wine industry, recognizes the “20 Most Admired Winemakers in North America.”

Last year the magazine featured admirable people from many different aspects of the wine industry. The 2014 list shines a spotlight on winemakers. “This isn’t necessarily about who makes the best wine, but about which winemakers are most esteemed by their colleagues and others in the industry,” said V&WM editor-in-chief Tina Caputo. “These are the pioneers, the innovators, the trend-buckers, the standard-setters and the leaders.”

2014ND_Cover_72The list was compiled by V&WM editors with the input of a nominating committee comprised of winemakers, grapegrowers, wine writers, educators, buyers, sommeliers and consultants throughout North America.

The 20 winemakers who came out on top reflect a wide range of wines, styles and regions. Some produce hundreds of thousands of cases each year; some make only a few thousand.

Because no individual person received significantly more votes than the others, V&WM chose to list the winners in alphabetical, rather than numerical, order.

The Top 20 Most Admired People in the North American Wine Industry include:

•           Peter Bell, Fox Run Vineyards (New York)
•           Bob Bertheau, Chateau Ste. Michelle (Washington)
•           Cathy Corison, Corison Winery (California)
•           Paul Draper, Ridge Vineyards (California)
•           Merry Edwards, Merry Edwards Winery (California)
•           Daryl Groom, Groom Wines (California)
•           Josh Jensen, Calera Wine Co. (California)
•           Jim Klein, Navarro Vineyards (California)
•           Greg La Follette, La Follette Wines (California)
•           Jim Law, Linden Vineyards (Virginia)
•           Ted Lemon, Littorai Wines (California)
•           Dennis Martin, Fetzer Vineyards (California)
•           Luca Paschina, Barboursville Vineyards (Virginia)
•           Joel Peterson, Ravenswood Winery (California)
•           David Ramey, Ramey Wine Cellars (California)
•           Johannes Reinhardt, Anthony Road Wine Co. and Kemmeter Wines (New York)
•           Rollin Soles, Argyle Winery / ROCO (Oregon)
•           Wendy Stuckey, White Wine Maker, Chateau Ste. Michelle (Washington)
•           Margo Van Staaveren, Chateau St.  Jean (California)
•           John Williams, Frog’s Leap Winery (California)

Perlis Picks: COMSTOCK WINES

November 15, 2014 by evebushman

COMSTOCK WINES

http://comstockwines.com/

One of the many benefits of spending a day visiting wineries with Martinelli Winery wine educator Rick Fraga is that conversations with personnel from other wineries inevitably turn to business topics, especially, in this case, harvest. [Okay, they also talk about parties, but that’s a story for another day.]

RICK FRAGA, KELLY COMSTOCK FERRIS AND KAREN PERLIS

l – r: RICK FRAGA, KELLY COMSTOCK FERRIS AND KAREN PERLIS

By all accounts from everyone we talked to, harvest in 2014 came early and fast, very fast. “All hands on deck” kind of fast. So, can you imagine dealing with this at the same time as you are building a state of the art winery, tasting room and hospitality center? Well, this is what the good people at Comstock Wines have been dealing with.

I first tasted the Comstock Wines at the Sonoma In The City event in Los Angeles and really enjoyed their – you guessed it – Zinfandel. That’s also where I met winery partner and general manager Kelly Comstock Ferris. Oh yeah, she was pregnant then, although she pretty much hid it with loose clothing. So add that – the most important part – to an already very complicated mix.

When we visited her in mid-October, her beautiful [2nd] daughter had been born, harvest was in, and that winery and tasting room, well, it was still pretty much a concrete slab, although wall erection was imminent.

And don’t think that Kelly and the new winery are just another couple of pretty faces. Kelly has the chops as well. Growing up in Southern California, she moved to New York to go to college and ended up in the hospitality industry, along with an MBA in Marketing & Entrepreneurship from Baruch College. She opened and ran a successful bar in Manhattan before moving to the Dry Creek Valley, where her parents own a vineyard. Before becoming GM of Comstock Wines, she became Marketing Coordinator of the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley as well as holding management positions at two other Dry Creek Valley wineries.

Oh yeah, the wines are pretty good too. The grapes come not only from the Comstock Winery & Estate Vineyards and Comstock Family Vineyards, but from such notable vineyards as Sangiacomo, Gloeckner and Mauritson. Winemaker Chris Russi’s wealth of experience started with Orsi/Kuimelis Vineyards in Dry Creek Valley. Since then, he has worked with Geyser Peak, Peter Lehmann Wines in Australia, Christopher Creek and Thomas George. In addition to making the wines at Comstock, he is a professional wine judge and owns a small 106-year-old Zinfandel/Carignane vineyard [yum].

So, we sat in the gorgeous new tasting room…wait, actually that wasn’t built yet, so we sat In the construction trailer – Kelly had graciously schlepped a few bottles for us to taste.

We tasted….

2013 Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc [100% from the Comstock Family Vineyards]

2012 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel [49% from Comstock Family Vineyards, 24% from Mauritson and 13.5% each from the Treborce Vineyard and Faloni Vineyard]

2012 Rockpile Zinfandel [mostly from Mauritson]

The SB was very clean, nice fruit, not too high in the acid component that you sometimes find in other SBs. Both Zinfandels were excellent, plenty of fruit [but not fruit bombs], long finish on both with the Rockpile ultimately stealing the show for me.

They also make a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, both from the Sonoma Coast, as well as a Cabernet Sauvignon. A Viognier will be released in the Spring of 2015. Everything is very small production, so you should get on their mailing list before the next round of Zinfandels are released, also in the Spring. And pay them a visit – that tasting room is scheduled to be open in March and it should be pretty amazing. In the meantime, Kelly says they are “available for ‘hard hat tours’ and ‘construction trailer tastings’ any time before the facility is operational.”

Annual Wine Star Awards Honor the Most Influential and Innovative Names in the Wine Industry

PASO ROBLES, CA (November 12, 2013) Wine Enthusiast Magazine announced today that the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA) has received the honor of being named the 2013 Wine Region of the Year in the magazine’s annual Wine Star Awards. Paso Robles Wine Country, located along California’s famed Central Coast, is midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco with over 200 wineries and 32,000 vineyard acres. The region’s winemakers, growers and industry are ecstatic to be held in the highest regard among some of the world’s greatest wine producing regions with this incredible award.

Paso_Wine-Star_homepage-marquee[2][1]“Since 1983, when the Paso Robles AVA was first created, the region has grown exponentially with talent, quality and artistry,” said Gary Eberle, owner of Eberle Winery.

Paso Robles as a wine region has been gaining in popularity in recent years with a number of accolades through exemplary point scores, creative video marketing initiatives and high profile articles and reports. The AVA continues to mature with a current proposal to create 11 districts within the boundaries of the Paso Robles viticultural area which will allow growers and vintners to tell their stories more clearly, which in turn will give consumers and trade a much greater understanding of Paso Robles’ diversity and complexity.

“This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our wineries and growers whose individual accomplishments help raise the bar of the region as a whole,” said Jennifer Porter, Executive Director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance.

The Paso Robles wine region and the winners of the 2013 Wine Star Awards will be honored at an industry studded gala / black-tie awards ceremony at the New York Public Library in New York City on January 27, 2014. The Paso Robles AVA will be represented by Jennifer Porter, Executive Director and Christopher Taranto, Communications Director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, as well as a number of winery and grower representatives.
