V. Sattui Winery named “Domestic Winery of the Year”

June 27, 2020 by evebushman

V. Sattui was named 2020 “Domestic Winery of the Year” after earning a remarkable 26 medals, including 10 that were awarded Platinum and 12 awarded Gold at the 38th annual San Diego International Wine & Spirits Challenge. The Napa Valley winery, specializing in vineyard-designate bottlings, produced a tie for “Wine of the Year” with their 2016 Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon ($92) and 2016 Vangone Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($140), each dazzled with a score of 98 points out of 100.  V. Sattui’s Bordeaux-style blend, the 2016 Paradiso ($95), narrowly missed a three-way tie with a score of 97 points.

Seven more V. Sattui wines scored Platinum, including their 2017 Napa Valley Malbec ($46) with 95 points and 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($52) with 96 points.  Their Estate Vittorio’s Vineyard produced two more Platinum winners:  2017 Petit Verdot ($47) and Cabernet Sauvignon ($78), both earning 94 points.  Additional 94 point wines included V. Sattui’s 2018 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir ($48), 2018 Los Carneros Pinot Noir ($39), and 2017 Napa Valley Syrah ($42) – further displaying the winery’s broad range of quality wine varietals.

The venerable San Diego International is one of the oldest and most revered competitions in the United States. Founded by award-winning wine columnist Dan Berger and Bob Foster and wine rep Dick Colangelo in 1982, the competition has been under the guidance of nationally syndicated wine columnist Robert Whitley for the past 17 years.

Whitley has assembled a remarkable team of dedicated wine enthusiasts, including Director Rich Cook and Chief Judges Michael Franz (Wine) and Maurice DiMarino (Spirits), to oversee planning and production of this important annual deep dive into wine & spirits evaluation. The San Diego International chooses its judges carefully, always with an eye toward giving each wine and spirit entered a fair shot on a level playing field.  This year’s panel of judges included a prestigious list of winemakers, wine writers, and sommeliers.

“American and foreign wine competitions can be, and often are, unpredictable.  It’s not unusual for an unknown to show up and claim a top award.  But some things never change.  One of those would be the inevitability of V. Sattui Winery, one of Napa Valley’s finest,” stated Whitley.  Speaking to V. Sattui’s richly flavored 2018 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, “Notes of black cherry, ripe strawberry, fall spice and gentle oak toast entice on the nose and please on the palate, with a supple texture and a long, fully integrated finish keep you coming back for more.  Wines like this are why Pinot Noir is so popular.” he added.

“I am very proud and happy for our vineyard and winemaking teams; they work so hard and deserve all the credit for this amazing recognition of our wines.  To be Voted Best Winery and tie with ourselves for Best Wine of the competition is a tremendous feat,” says Winery President, Tom Davies.

JEFF RUNQUIST WINS “WINERY OF THE YEAR” IN 2019 FOUR TIMES OVER

February 27, 2020 by evebushman

PLYMOUTH, CA  – Jeff Runquist Wines has been awarded 2019 “Winery of the Year” at Dan Berger’s International Wine Competition, the California State Fair, Critics Challenge International Wine & Spirits Competition and by Robert Whitley’s “Wine Talk.”

This was Runquist’s third year in a row winning “Winery of the Year” at Berger’s competition and the fourth time in the last five years he has received this distinction. Runquist earned the David Stevens Memorial Trophy at the competition, awarded to him for the feat of earning 10 awards of gold or above from his 35 entries. Jeff Runquist Wines was also their Red Sweepstakes Winner, with the 2017 “R” Petite Sirah, Enver Salman Vineyard, Clarksburg garnering Best of Class Triple Gold.

“Jeff Runquist Wines has almost single-handedly added luster to the red wines of the Sierra Foothills and mid-eastern California,” states Berger.

Robert Whitley also recognized Jeff Runquist Wines as “Winery of the Year” in his syndicated “Wine Talk” column.

“Over the course of the past year, I have tasted thousands of wines, judged multiple wine competitions and traveled thousands of miles to evaluate wines from Bordeaux to the Napa Valley… [Jeff Runquist Wines] rose up and smacked me between the eyes in 2019,” said Whitley.

Jeff Runquist Wines was named “Winery of the Year—Domestic” at the Critics Challenge International Wine & Spirits Competition in San Diego. He entered 29 wines there and medaled with 28. That total included four platinum and 15 gold awards, with 19 of their 29 wines earning gold or better.

In addition, he was Winery of the Year for the second year in a row at the 2019 California State Fair, from this year’s field of 2,811 entrants.

Jeff Runquist is a small producer of single vineyard designated red table wines with the motto, “Come taste the diversity and drink the glass less traveled.” His winery and tasting room are located in the heart of the Sierra Foothills, in Amador County’s Shenandoah Valley.

Runquist produces 25 different red varietals in small lots, each from a single vineyard. His wines are fruit forward with emphasis on the terroir of the vineyard of origin and smooth, elegant tannins. The four principle wines that his winery tries to have on hand year round are Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Barbera, and Petit Verdot. Beyond that, anything goes – as long as the grape comes from California and has the ideal match of soil climate to personality. Sometimes this leads Runquist to varietals many may not have heard of, such as Tannat, Carignane and Charbono.

This insatiable curiosity combined with his four decades of experience helps take Runquist’s wines to the next level, but he also attributes his success to his unique partnerships with his growers. Depending upon the varietal, Runquist teams with sixteen different growers from different parts of Northern and Central California, pairing the particular grape varietal with a specific vineyard site.  The growers share his passion and know the value of harvesting grapes at their peak of flavor, color and character.  All but four of his wines carry a vineyard designation and the name of the grower and a close relationship with growers and a respect for their fruit is revealed in every bottle of Runquist wine.

One great way to get to know Runquist’s wines is at his elegant Tasting Room in quaint Plymouth, California, open seven days a week from 11:00am to 5:00pm. No two (or three, or four) tasting room experiences are ever the same, as Jeff Runquist Wines produces more than two dozen exciting and different varietals. The staff is savvy about the geography and history of each grape, curating a voyage through Runquist’s universe of wines.

Oenophiles who stop by the Tasting Room on March 7 or 8 can enjoy the “Behind the Cellar Door” event, when 43 Amador County wineries, including Jeff Runquist Wines, will be opening their cellar doors for a weekend of education, food, and award-winning wine. For details about this event, visit BCDAmador.com.

About Vini d’Italia 2019

This year’s tour celebrates the release of Gambero Rosso’s 32nd edition of their annual guide, Vini d’Italia. Produced today in Italian, English, German, Chinese and Japanese; Vini d’Italia is the definitive resource on the country’s wines and wineries. It is the result of a year of work by an expert team of 53 tasters who have traveled the country (including Switzerland’s Canton Ticino starting this year) visiting wineries, interviewing producers and tasting 45,000 wines. The book reviews 2,485 wineries and a total of 22,000 wines, noting wines of distinction with bicchieri (glasses). This year, just 436 Tre Bicchieri have emerged — fewer than one percent of the wines tasted. Vini d’Italia is not just a collection of scores and ratings; it is a fundamental and essential volume for all those who work in the sector or are interested in quality Italian wines. Available on Apple and Amazon.

Rolex Whisky’s Gavin Linde

June 1, 2018 by evebushman

Being intrigued by whisky causes the constant desire to learn more. That quest for knowledge, and your next dram, can lead to responses to certain advertisers, brand ambassadors and tasting events.

Rolex Whisky for blogWhen I was in the midst of writing about the Universal Whisky Experience I wanted to know which of the whisky people I was following on social media might be attending the same show in Las Vegas. When I learned that Rolex Whisky would be there, aka Gavin Linde, I was a little thrilled.

We did meet, we did share a dram, but it wasn’t enough as the event was so grand, and neither of us wanted to miss a moment of it, we settled on emailing later. And for me, as a writer, getting Gavin to do one of my 5-question interviews.

Here’s what I knew:

Rare Whisky & Rolex Collector Whisky hunter + Rolex gatherer + Influencer + Grocery Brand builder + Superdad (no cape) + adoring husband + foodie + traveler. #thescotchfellas. RolexWhisky on Instagram, 24.9k followers

San Diego whisky, bourbon & Rolex enthusiast, brand influencer, and rare Asian whisky hunter. RolexWhisky on Facebook

Here’s what I asked:

1. Gavin, what exactly do you do with whisky and Rolex watches, besides collecting? Are you a brand ambassador of sorts, or something else? (Basically asking if this is your day job for money or just for pleasure?)

I am a collector at heart, I have always been since a kid. I started with unique to each series Rolex watches, since as a kid I always wanted one, and I said one day I will get myself one. Well that turned into 5 so far, and there are a few more I want to get still, but there is no rush.

I have been a whisky drinker since I was 18 living in South Africa, and 3 years ago a friend of mine approached me to look for rare whiskies for his friend. That turned into what you see here, I now have contacts all over the world and actively search for rare ones for my private collection.

The end goal is to liquidate it all in 15 years to put my kids through college; that’s what I say, but lets talk in 15 years, lol. In the meantime, I drink some of them, get to hang out and meet amazing people, and this hobby has turned into a passion project. I am not a brand ambassador, but I am close to a few brands that I have resonated with as far as their liquor and their brand ambassadors.

I really had no idea this hobby was going to grow like this, and I love being a part of the community, educating others, travelling, drinking amazing whisky, and the goal by the end of this year is create something fun and exciting. My full time jobs are realtor, VP of sales for 2 natural grocery brands, and business development for my father’s promotional printing company.

2. Why the connection between fine whisky and watches? What sent you in that direction?

I started my Instagram originally to document a day in the life of my Rolexes. Then I got into Whisky and decided to change the name and come up with something memorable, so one of my mentors suggested putting one of my watches in every picture, and the other said call yourself rolexwhisky. So there you have it, it just came together naturally.

3. Dare we ask, how many bottles of whisky do you currently have in your own liquor cabinet? And more than one Rolex too?

I have around 400 bottles, primarily Japanese whisky as that is what really got me passionate about the business; I then went after the bourbons and ryes, and just recently got into the scotch bottles. I currently have 5 Rolex watches, each a unique one in the style, and of course investment pieces as they are unique and hard to come by easily.

4. Living in La Jolla, what are the bars and/or restaurants you recommend to visiting whisky lovers?

Wow, I get asked that a lot, I have a really hard time drinking out in public since I know the cost of the bottles. My go to places are Seven Grand and Whiskey House. I am trying to work with restaurants to step up their whisky game, help curate their lists for them, and not just let the liquor rep put whatever in there. One of my goals this year is to work with a few restaurants to do this, and put my stamp and my Instagram behind it.

5. What are your future plans?

To educate and get more people involved in whisky and show them some amazing brands they have never heard of. My wife’s girlfriends come by and I love introducing them to great brands I enjoy drinking. I want to be a brand ambassador for a brand I am passionate about, but more like an insta ambassador. I want to travel and visit more distilleries and go to new events. I want to build my total picture, offer luxury tastings, help people find hard to find whiskys.

People ask me the end goal, I want to create a brand that people know and understand its passion. It would be cool for some millionaire to hire me to build the ultimate whisky bar for their home too. You just never know with me. I do know I look forward to making more true friends, drinking great whisky, and always have a good time doing this. Whatever this is I love introducing people to my passion, and brands that I love drinking. I love interacting with my Instagram followers and friends, and bonus is getting to meet each other, just like we did, that is what makes this all so fun.

This is one of the few international spirits competitions worldwide to be judged “double blind” by a panel of highly regarded beverage professionals including sommeliers, retail buyers, journalists, mixologists and beverage directors.

Coming on the heels of the DISC wins, Marble Distilling Co. was named Best in Division-Vodka for Marble Vodka at Distilled: San Diego Spirit & Cocktail Competition. Marble’s Gingercello & Gingercello Reserve also won Silver and Bronze Medals in the liqueur division.  The San Diego County Fair hosts Distilled, one of the best spirit competitions in the country, with more than 180 entries from 85 distilleries around the world judged by industry professionals.

These awards come just after receiving a Master’s Medal in Green Initiatives, the highest award allotted, from The Global Spirits Masters series. Produced by UK-based The Spirits Business which has long celebrated the international spirits industry, they created the Global Distillery Masters to celebrate the achievements and innovations of the distilleries themselves, beyond their spirits. “This is an example of what you should be doing” said Judge David T. Smith, Founder of the Craft Distilling Expo. Smith went on the say “they (Marble Distilling Co.) have the additional challenge of having a hotel as well. I think it’s great that they are zero-waste.” Judge Nicholas Clark Director General of The Gin Guild remarked that “The figures for water savings are astonishing.”

“We are honored to receive these prestigious awards, as we are an emerging distillery,” said Co-Founder & Head Distiller Connie Baker. “Not only do we distill first-rate spirits, we are leaders in sustainable distilling, saving 4.1 million gallons of water annually and recapturing enough energy annually to power 20 homes.”
