The Family Winemakers of California, an association of family-owned wineries in California, launched ticket sales on Friday, January 18 for its annual tasting in Southern California.  Taking place in Del Mar, California at the Del Mar Fairgrounds’ Exhibit Hall on Saturday, March 9 – Sunday, March 10, the two-day tasting features 150 of California’s small, family-owned wineries showcasing over 750 wines, said Paul Kronenberg, president of the Family Winemakers of California.

FAMILY WINEMAKERS OF CALIFORNIA

Family Winemakers of California was established in 1991 in response to a need for public policy involvement for the small wine producers of California.  The Association has become a strong force in the wine industry, lobbying for wine producer rights, and has an active membership of over 550 California wineries.  Family Winemakers draws its membership from all the wine producing areas of the state, with the largest concentration coming from Napa and Sonoma Counties.

Family Winemakers trade tastings, held in San Francisco since 1991 and in Southern California since 2000, are well known in the industry for the quantity and quality of the participating wineries.  The tastings give members of the trade and public the opportunity to get to know wineries from all over the state, especially the small, all in one place at one time. Luncheon and Tasting with the STARS of Santa Barbara

February 1, 2013 by evebushman

From one of my fave educational sources, Ian Blackburn of LearnAboutWine.com, I received an invitation to attend a VIP luncheon with 16 other vinophiles followed by a tasty tour of the STARS of Santa Barbara held in the beautiful Beverly Hills Peninsula Hotel.

Winemaker Luncheon

There were seventeen names on the guest list, four winemakers (two of those were winery owners), two Beverly Hills restaurant sommeliers, and the rest of us in press and public relations.   I was seated between Kenneth Volk, owner of Kenneth Volk Winery and Jeffrey Stivers, the sommelier from N/Naka (Open Table’s number one awarded restaurant by diners).

Ian Blackburn, our host and founder of www.LearnAboutWine.com, planned for each winemaker to briefly talk about their winery, the wines we were to taste, and answer any questions.  Given that we had two hours I thought it was ample time; I was wrong.

Most of the conversation centered on winemaking practices, price points and consumer interests.  The most interesting topic, that seemed to get comments from most of us, was the change in our palates.  For instance, the trend of moving away from over-oaked Chardonnays to more stainless steel aging.

The group agreed that our tastes had changed due to our jobs, but we wondered if the public at large had changed in their tastes as well.  While one somm said she mostly sold Cabernets another sold mostly white varietals.  One winemaker’s biggest seller was a Syrah blend, another a Sauvignon Blanc.  But one thing we all agreed on: Thank Bacchus (yes that was me that said that) for White Zinfandel.  That pink fruity wine put Sutter Home, and Napa Valley, on the map for a more general wine-drinking public.

Winemaker Quotes

“Most all wines are ‘heirloom’ varietals due to the length of time we’ve been growing them.”

Kenneth Volk, Kenneth Volk Winery.

“We are seeing a renewed interest, and growth, in Syrah from Los Angeles wine drinkers.”

Tim Snider, President, Fess Parker, Epiphany

“The cost of goods, farming and lack of government support makes our wines more expensive than the imports.  However, people in Los Angeles eat out more often than anywhere else in the U.S., including N.Y.”

Karen Steinwachs, winemaker, Buttonwood.

Tasting Notes

2012 Buttonwood “Zingy” Sauvignon Blanc:  Just bottled three days before, the wine had fresh ripe aromas and flavors of peach honey and lime.

2011 Epiphany Grenache Blanc: A great nose of jasmine, spices, rose petals and a mouthful of pink grapefruit and apricot.

2011 Kenneth Volk Albarino: Aromas included honeydew melon, crisp green apple and Asian pear that carried through to the taste, very smooth on the back palate.

2010 Riverbench Estate Chardonnay: Sliced apples, nutmeg, apricot and peach nut fruits, followed by a crisp apples and oak, and a long finish.

2009 Kenneth Volk Pinot Noir: On the nose I got earth, mushrooms, bright red fruits, bark and white pepper.  I tasted the same bright fruit on the mouth as well as cigar and green bell pepper, with a long balanced finish.

2010 Riverbench Pinot Noir: Greeted by a beautiful garnet color, then aromas and taste of great jammy light and dark red fruit, cherry pits and very smooth.  Kenneth Volk commented that he liked the texture.

2009 Buttonwood Cabernet Franc: On the nose I got mint, dried fruit, mushroom, eucalyptus.  The taste was palate drying, gritty, interesting fruit.

2009 Epiphany Revelation: A blend of 51% Grenache and 49% Syrah, our last wine had lots of spice, wet cigar, smoke, green peppercorn and jam.  On the palate there were nuances of blue fruits, cherry and I thought people would love this with food or without.

Visiting the STARS

Have you guessed?  Yes, Eve was overwhelmed and tuckered out after such an exciting lunch.  I spent an hour visiting tasting tables that didn’t have lines, saying hello to friends and making some very hurried notes before scrambling home.  I neglected some I had just spent time with at lunch and a couple of others I was due to visit in an upcoming trip to Santa Ynez, but I think I covered my fair share.

Here is a mini-highlight of what I tried and noted that I really dug:

From Chef Mike Fraschilla: Beyond Candy, Chewing Gum, and Da Cubs… Pondering The New Wines From The Rusack Winery!

January 5, 2012 by evebushman

Notes From A Recent Tasting Of The New Rusack Wine Releases – For those not aware, Rusack Wines are part of the famed Wrigley Family. Wine makers John & Helen Falcone have another series of hits w/ this years releases. Notes from last nights tasting:

Chef Mike Fraschilla

2010 Santa Ynez Sauv Blanc ($12-14) – Balance Sauv B w/ soft notes & flavors of citrus, fresh cut grass, and chalky minerality. More Sancerre than New Zealand.

2009 SB Co. Chardonnay ($19-22) – A well made very balanced Chard. Great notes of grilled pineapple & lemon zest. Malo’d yes but still w/ a pleasing acidity & good finish.. A SEEK, FIND, BUY, and ENJOY WINE!

2008 Santa Maria Reserve Chardonnay ($27-29) – This “Rombauer-esque” Chard is front loaded w/ notes & flavors of pleasant vanilla-butterscotch. A big full mouth-feel but a slightly soft finish!

2009 SB Co Pinot Noir ($25-28) – A strait forward Pinot huge nose & flavors scream red cherry. Fruit whores will want to Seek, Find, Buy & Enjoy this wine!

2009 Santa Maria Pinot Noir ($29-32) – Great balance of dark cherry fruit & mushroom/truffle earthiness. My favorite Pinot for the night. A Seek,Find, Buy, & Enjoy Wine..

2008 Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir ($33-36) – A muscular Pinot typical to the SRH region. A bit tight & soft on the finish.. Would like to come back to re-taste after a few more months of bottle aging!

2009 SB Co. Syrah ($21-24) – Ok the 2008 made #27 on Wine Spectators Top 100 & this release is a great follow up! BIG dark inky Syrah bursting w/ notes & flavors of blackberry, licorice, lavender, and pepper spice. Great long finish. One of two wines I went back for re-taste to “drink” and not spit!  Big Syrah lovers will find this better than last years 08! A MUST SEEK, FIND, BUY, and ENJOY WINE!

2008 Santa Ynez Sangiovese ($27-30) – A good effort at Sangiovese grown here in CA. Not as bright as say a Chianti & not as deep as say a Brunello. Perhaps then a CA version at Rosso di Montalcino? : )

2008 Santa Ynez “Anacapa” Cab-Franc ($33-35) – An earthy chalky Cab-Franc usually only sold winery direct. A bit pricey & perhaps not enough balance of fruit for lovers of “California” wines!

Of course missing from this tasting was the Rusack Zin (Winery/Wine Club Direct) produced from grapes grown exclusively on Catalina Island (The Wrigley Family” Island Conservancy owns 88% of the island). Based on climate and topography I might have thought Pinot Noir or Syrah could also be ideal grapes to grow on Catalina (One Can Still Hope), but then again what the hell do I know? : ) Still a fantastic flight of wines from a winery that seems to get better w/ each new vintage! : )

The Goddess of Wine Reports: Garagiste Sneak Preview

October 31, 2011 by evebushman

Goddess of Wine, Denise Lowe, at Garagiste preview. Photo by Xochitl Maiman

When both Michael Perlis and I both couldn’t attend the Garagiste Sneak Preview at The Cellar, I worried!  But then, lo and behold, an e-mail from the Goddess of Wine, aka Denise Lowe, appeared and, yes, she would go and yes, she would share the event with readers.  This woman is amazing at attending so may events!  Thank you Goddess!

Made a last minute decision to hit the road to visit The Cellar in Santa Clarita last Thursday. Why? Because there was a special ‘sneak peek’ at a few wineries who will be participating in the upcoming Paso Garagiste festival on November 12th. As I’m a big fan of Paso wines, and will be heading to the event next month, I thought I’d get a head start. I hadn’t been there in quite a while, so it was nice to catch up with owner DiMaggio Washington and his talented crew. The event was perfect – small enough to give me a chance to really visit with the winemakers (or their reps), and large enough to taste a bunch of wines!

I started in the back room with Lisa Dinsmore – one of the folks behind Paso Garagiste, along with Doug Minnick and Dan Erland Andersen – pouring Carlson and Red Zeppelin wines.

There were a lot of wines to taste. Highlights include:

Carlson Wines – Winemaker Chuck Carlson

2008 Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir – My fave of the 3 Pinots being offered. Medium light garnet color. Spice and raspberries in the nose. Tobacco and mushroom with some earth in the mouth. A nicely balanced wine. Should age well.

Red Zeppelin – Winemaker Stillman Brown

2005 Monterey County Syrah, Bear Valley Vineyard -Spicy red cherry with some minerality, cedar notes and a yummy long finish. Yummy is a technical term.

Les Deux Chats – Winemakers Chris & Patty Connelly

2009 Roussanne – Filtered – Lovely minerality from this delicious Roussanne from the Ripken Vineyard in Lodi. No oak, just soft fruit balanced with just the right amount of acid on the finish.

2010 Roussanne – Unfiltered – A bit more viscous quality in the mouth than the 2009. Still very young. I’d like to try it again in a year.

Tercero Wines – Winemaker Larry Schaffer – who poured a whole bunch of wines not on the list! My faves:

2007 The Climb (Petit Sirah/Syrah) – Just a wonderful blend of two of my favorite grapes. Big. Fruity. Needed a big grilled steak.

2010 Mourvedre Rosé – This is one of my favorite CA Rosés. Dry as a bone, beautiful color. Crisp. Yum.

AmByth Estate – Winemaker Phillip Hart – Biodynamic farming at its best. Beautiful blends. And low alcohol. It CAN be done.

2009 Priscus – 46% Grenache Blanc/25% Viognier/17% Roussanne/12% Marsanne – Peaches and apples in the nose and the palate, too. Very crisp and refreshing. The perfect palate cleanser!

2010 Counoise – 100% Counoise. Surprising and tasty. And only 12% alcohol.

Stanger Vineyards – Manager JP French pouring

2006 Stanger Vineyards Syrah Library Reserve – Deep and dark purple, coffee and anise in the nose. The ultra-ripe fruit flavors provide a long finish. Liked this wine a lot.

So that’s the sneak peak. I can hardly wait for the big event!

There were only a few wineries on this list that I had tried before, so I was very excited to be at this tasting to experience some new wines and wineries. Everything I tasted was of very high quality, but two wineries really stood out for me: Rarecat Wines and Hill Family.

“Rarecat Wines, Rutherford”
Lionheart Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, 2009
Charles Heintz Chardonnay, Russian River, 2009

Both of these wines showed incredible elegance, delicious fruit and long finishes. I loved the “mouthfeel” of these wines, especially the velvety Chardonnay.

Excellent wines!

“Hill Family, Napa Valley”
Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, 2010
Barrel Blend, 2008
Syrah, Clarke Vineyard, 2009

We started the tasting event with this Sauvignon Blanc, and knew right away we were going to be enjoying ourselves. The Barrel Blend was very tasty and, at , an incredible value for a Napa wine.

And the Clarke Vineyard Syrah was my favorite wine of the day.
