Aberlour A’Bunadh Wins Whisky of The Year at The 2018 International Whisky Competition®

July 9, 2018 by evebushman

LAS VEGAS, NV – Graeme Cruickshank, Master Distiller at Aberlour Distillery becomes Master Distiller of the Year for crafting the Whisky of the Year 2018 and will receive the coveted Golden Barrel Trophy.

34258687_10155747345345028_8033713185884209152_nThe International Whisky Competition just released its results for this year’s most respected blind tasting judging event. The top recognition, Whisky of the Year, was awarded to Aberlour A’Bunadh (60.5% ABV) which scored 97.4 points, the highest scoring whisky of the competition.

Official results: www.whiskycompetition.com/2018-results

The 9th edition of the International Whisky Competition took place in Las Vegas over three days, from May 15 to 17 and received whiskies from the world over. A world-class tasting panel made of whisky, spirit, beer and wine experts blind tasted each whisky on an individual basis (8 minutes per whisky).

Each whisky was scored using a comprehensive 100-point scale system developed by Sebastien Gavillet, IWC Head of Tasting Panel. This process and the fact that only three medals are awarded in any category make the International Whisky Competition the most followed whisky competition and one of the most professional competitions of its kind in the world.

We warmly congratulate Graeme Cruickshank, Master Distiller at Aberlour, as well as his team, for creating such a complex, rich and perfectly balanced whisky.

Aberlour Distillery will receive the Golden Barrel Trophy for winning the Whisky of the Year during a ceremony to be held this summer in Aberlour, Scotland.

The International Whisky Competition is the most followed Whisky Competition on Social Media and brings whiskies from around the world to be blind tasted and rated by a professional tasting panel using the most comprehensive tasting method available. 15 criteria are required to produce the tasting notes as well as aroma and flavor profiles for the International Whisky Guide. Unlike other competitions, the judges are presented with one whisky at a time, to ensure each whisky gets the proper attention. It’s the only competition in the spirits world to deliver unique medals designed to promote each of the winning whiskies. Only 3 medals (Gold, Silver & Bronze) are awarded per category. The Whisky of the Year (highest score during the competition) gets rewarded with the Golden Barrel Trophy.

Global Wine Awards 2018: Prep Work and Prep Fun?

June 29, 2018 by evebushman

So this happened. THIS. What my footer of every article cries out for… has served as a judge…in the hopes that someone might notice and hire me again. They did. They being Mark Norman (a LinkedIn connection) and Eddie Rivkin (CEO and Exec. Director of the Global Wine and Spirit Awards).

34070294_2019446285038761_4819069304588730368_nHello Eve,

Both the Craft Beverage Corporation (my company) and the Craft Beverage Expo (Kellie Shevlin) have agreed to work with Edward Rivkin (CEO and Exec. Dir. of the Global Wine Awards company) to grow the first annual awards event into a world-class competition. What will be unique about this event will be that as well as a long list of typical awards this competition will have matching awards for craft (wineries under 5,000 cases) and micro production wine (wines produced in quantities under 1,000 cases).

I would like to personally invite you to join the judging panel for the 2018 Global Wine Awards being held June 17th -20th 2018 at The Tropicana Hotel, in Las Vegas. As a judge for the event, The Global Wine Awards will…

Best wishes

Mark

You can bet I replied to Norman and Rivkin in record time and confirmed that I definitely wanted in. Rivkin telephoned me a few days later, to get to know more about me, and being me I made sure he knew that though I knew a bit about wine I wasn’t in the same ranks as the other judges. He knew. He said he wanted a group of wine people that could each bring something different, as they say, to the proverbial table. It was a new competition, so part of the proverbial table covered getting the word out about the competition so more wineries would want to be a part of it. One of the tag lines on social media being used, which would attract my attention if I were a winemaker was: #ISO100pts

The judges were Deborah Parker Wong, David Glancy, Stacie Hunt, Roger Bohmrich, Paul R. Ellis, Dänny Ronen, Cameron Sisk, Cassandra Brown and little old me. Now, I had met Wong, in fact sat right next to her, when I was asked to be a guest judge for L.A. International Wine Competition. She was a pleasure to taste with and learn from, and she made me feel right at home.

(It was my first experience as a judge, later I would be invited to judge the Long Beach Grand Cru.)

I also knew Stacie Hunt, in fact I had suggested Rivkin hire her as well to fill out our panel. Hunt had been one of my educators with the North American Sommelier Association (NASA) when I took my American Wine Specialist ® certification classes. I had met her several times at different tastings as well. I knew I would be in good company.

The other judges that I hadn’t met before, well, after reading their full bios on the Global Wine Awards website, I knew just enough about them to realize one thing: they had far more wine education and certifications under their belt than I did. I wasn’t too intimated though as being a judge twice I was always treated respectfully, even when being shown the ropes. I was really starting to look forward to rolling up my sleeves. And about those sleeves:

Can you all please reply with what size lab coat you think you would wear? My plan was to surprise everyone with a really cool embroidered judge’s coat. Then I realized I can’t pull off the surprise without knowing your sizes. Poof there goes the surprise! I will only ask that you wear the lab coats for the part of the session(s) that will be photographed.

#ohboy – you know I forwarded this email to lots of family and friends! A lab coat! Embroidered! With my NAME on it? The amount of social media and press I could get (send out) was blowing my little blond brain up.

Now all I had to worry about would soon be really happening again: how many wines were we to sample?

Would I be able to keep up with the other judges in our speed tastings? Would we agree on scores, or as I’ve experienced in the past, will there be discussions at times to see the same attributes or flaws others saw? How many green olives and gray beef would I have to consume to cleanse my palate? Etc. etc. etc.

That ends part one of my little adventure. Look for my next installment where I will tell you how the judging process went, and then in a final installment I hope to share all of the medal winners!

Drake’s Organic White Rum and Organic Vodka Receive Critical Acclaim

October 23, 2017 by evebushman

Minneapolis (PRWEB) – Launched July 2017, Drake’s Organic Spirits is already redefining quality standards in the organic spirits industry as the recipient of gold medals for its vodka and white rum, both of which are organic, grain free, gluten-free and non-GMO.

The 2017 Global Spirit Awards presented Drake’s Organic White Rum with the only Double Gold medal awarded to a rum in the competition, along with the title of Best Rum (White). Its counterpart, Drake’s Organic Vodka, won a Gold medal from the 2017 San Diego Spirits Festival International Spirits Competition.

20933865_455776331475095_7714976771564394048_oEarly awards like these stem from the Minnesota company’s founders, Mark and Kristen Anderson, and their dedicated journey around the globe to source only the highest-quality organic, non-GMO ingredients to create a product that meets the highest possible consumer demands and expectations for quality in ingredients and taste.

Drake’s Organic Rum and Organic Vodka are handcrafted in the United States using alcohol that originates from the organic cane sugar fed from the purest water flowing down from the Andes Mountain tops to the fertile Cuaca Valley in South America. A 12-step distillation process creates a smooth, clean taste impossible to find in GRAIN-fermented spirits.

“Kristen and I both grew up on Midwestern farms knowing the importance of organic agricultural practices and were able to see a gap in the spirits industry. Not only did we want to provide a product that would meet the needs of people who support the organic movement and those with gluten allergies, but we wanted that product to taste exceptional. We wanted a product that was smooth– without the burn of grain alcohol.

To do that we had to find the right ingredients, and we found them in South America,” said Mark Anderson, CEO and co-founder of Drake’s Organic Spirits.

Informing on the gap in the spirits industry for a line of premium organic spirits, a 2016 Technavio report notes that while consumers are attracted by ingredient quality, previous organic spirit labels have not emphasized taste in their products. The same report denotes organic alcohol as an emerging trend that is expected to propel the growth of the global organic drinks market through at least 2020.

With the expected growth of the organic spirits industry and increasing demand for high-quality taste and ingredients in organic/non-GMO products, the launch and immediate critical success of Drake’s Organic Spirits signals a welcoming answer to the previous absence of a premium organic spirits label.

“We are thrilled with the positive response the organic vodka and organic white rum are receiving right off the bat. It helps validate the care we’ve taken in sourcing ingredients for a line of premium organic spirits that consumers will actually enjoy drinking,” said Anderson.

About Drake’s Organic Spirits
Drake’s Organic Spirits was launched in 2017 to utilize USDA organic and non-GMO Project Verified ingredients for the distillation and distribution of unique, premium alcoholic spirits. Handcrafted in Rochester, New York, Drake’s Organic Vodka and Drake’s Organic White Rum offer non-grain, gluten free, ultra-premium, 12 times distilled handcrafted products created from non-GMO Project Verified ingredients at a better price than the leading premium brands.

Drake’s Organic Spirits is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Khortytsa Vodka Wins Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition

August 3, 2017 by evebushman

San Francisco, CA & New York, NY  – Khortytsa Platinum Vodka took the Gold at the recent San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Founded in 2000, the SFWSC is one of the oldest and most prestigious competitions of its kind. All results can be viewed at: http://sfspiritscomp.com/results/overview.

Photo: Newswire.com

Photo: Newswire.com

According the SFWSC website, the award is a universally recognized indicator of exceptional quality and craftsmanship: “Products awarded a Gold medal are exceptional. They are near the pinnacle of achievement in their particular category. They are products that set the standard for all others of their type.”

“The Khortytsa Distillery has been recognized as one of the world’s best distilleries. Only 19 of the world’s leading distilleries have been recognized with this high honor. Moreover, this award comes on the heels of several big wins over the past few months including gold medals at the Denver International Spirits Competition, the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition, the New York International Spirits Competition and awards from the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America.

Gold winner Khortytsa Platinum is the most popular item in the Khortytsa line and retails for $11.99 per 750-mL.  There are three other items in the line including Khortytsa Ice, which took a Silver Medal in the competition, and has a bottle color that changes when chilled; it retails for $11.99 per 750-mL. Khortytsa Honey Pepper, offers a spicy zing to a variety of cocktails and retails for $11.99 per 750-mL, and Khortytsa De Luxe, appreciated by vodka connoisseurs, is a “super premium” vodka with a suggested retail of $24.99 for a 750-mL bottle.

Khortytsa Vodka, commonly referred to as Khor, has been gaining ground in numerous markets since its introduction in the United States just a few short years ago.  It is currently the third-largest selling vodka brand worldwide.

Ukraine’s famed Khortytsa (Hor-Ti-Tsa) Distillery named after Khortytsa Island, the “heart of Ukrane.” This ancient island’s history dates back thousands of years and reaches the roots of civilization. It is considered a sacred place in Ukraine and is one of the country’s seven wonders.

Built in 2003, the Khortytsa Distillery uses a local organic filter containing schungite (a unique natural mineral) which allows it to get as close as possible to the structure of natural water.  The filtration process is further enhanced with special birch and alder-tree charcoal and quartz sand.

Get a Broom! Global Spirits Brands Sweep Up the Gold at the LA International Spirits Competition

July 13, 2017 by evebushman

Los Angeles, CA – Global Spirits US, a privately held, international manufacturer and marketer of wines and spirits, received numerous Gold Medals at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition [LAISC]. Winning products include Odessa V.S.O.P. Brandy, LEAF Organic Vodka Made With Alaskan Glacial Water, and Khortytsa Platinum and Ice Vodkas. Both Odessa V.S.O.P. Brandy and Khortytsa Platinum Vodka won “Best in Category.”

Since introducing a spirits category in 2007, the LAISC has set the standard for judging distilled beverages. An esteemed panel of 20 judges used a blind-tasting method to award medals to the best spirits from around the world. This year’s competition received 392 Spirits entries from 146 producers in 31 different countries.

“This represents a bi-coastal win for us, and follows Gold awards from the NY International Spirits Competition earlier this month,” notes Global Spirits CEO Max Dubossarsky. “Since we introduced the brands here in the US, we’ve consistently captured the gold in numerous competitions.”

Gold winning Khortytsa (commonly referred to as KHOR in the USA) Platinum and Ice Vodkas are produced at Ukraine’s famed Khortytsa Distillery, which is among the world’s best distilleries. The brand is named for Khortytsa Island, which is known as “the heart of Ukraine.” This ancient island’s history dates back thousands of years, to the very roots of civilization. It is considered a sacred place, and is one of the country’s seven wonders.

Built in 2003, the Khortytsa Distillery is among the world’s finest distilleries. It uses a local organic filter containing schungite (a unique natural mineral) which allows it to get as close as possible to the structure of natural water.  The filtration process is further enhanced with special birch and alder-tree charcoal and quartz sand.

Gold winner Khortytsa Platinum is the most popular item in the line Khortytsa line and retails for $14.99 per 750-mL.  Khortytsa Ice, with a bottle color that changes when chilled, retails for $14.99 per 750-mL.

leaf vodkaLEAF Organic Vodkas are sourced from unique waters around the country. The Gold winning variety is made from Alaskan Glacial water, which lends a pure, smooth taste with a hint of sweetness. The water source gives LEAF Vodka its signature taste. (My review March 2017 of LEAF vodkas can be read here.)

With a recommended shelf price of $18.99 for 750-mL—and Certified USDA Organic — LEAF Vodka is well positioned within the dynamic and growing vodka category.

Odessa V.S.O.P. Brandy is produced at Ukraine’s famed Shustov Distillery from spirits distilled from white grape varietals including Rkatsiteli, Aligoté and Pinot varieties. The Rkatsiteli is an ancient pale-skinned grape variety from the Republic of Georgia – one of the oldest (if not the oldest) wine-producing regions on earth. Aligoté is a white grape used to make dry white wines in the Burgundy region of France, but it is also cultivated in many Eastern Europe countries.

Odessa is distilled using the traditional French “Charentais” – or double fractional distillation – in copper pot stills.  The heart of the distillate is then carefully selected to be bottled and aged, enhancing the delicate and refined aroma that is the signature of its white grape varietals.  The spirit then ages in oak barrels for at least five years.

The resulting brandy is world class.  Notes of oriental spices and citrus fruit dominate the first nose, while the second follows with hints of raisins and tones of maturity.  The taste carries honey and nutty overtones, while the creamy caramel finish is long and smooth.  It’s a brandy to be savored.

Odessa V.S.O.P. Brandy available in 750-mL and 100-mL sizes, the product carries a suggested retail price of $10.99 or $1.99 respectively.

June 21, 2017 by evebushman

BWW – the Best Wine of the World Competition, true to its name, selects the Best Wines in the World. It is the largest wine competition in the world, whether measured by the number of wines, the number of consumers involved or the judges taking part.

16991931_1500293876649780_7820858405358433376_oThe competition differs significantly from other wine competitions in that the wines are selected by consumers all around the world and many thousands wine during a three-month period of voting, which takes place on Tastingbook.com and via social media, such as Facebook and Instagram.

The public votes and points awarded by wine professionals are tallied, and the twenty wines with the most votes from each competition category enter the finals that will be held in the fall. In the finals, the wines undergo a blind evaluation by panels consisting of leading wine makers, wine writers, Masters of Wine and wine professionals.

The finals are held on three different continents – Europe, Australia and the United States – so that each region evaluates the wines from that region and its nearby areas.

Public voting commences on July 31, 2017 and concludes on October 30, 2017. Judging of the finalists will follow and BWW will announce the Best Wine in the World and the winners of the different categories at the inaugural BWW Awards Gala, to be held in the United States on January 25, 2018.

The competition is organized by the world’s largest wine information service Tastingbook.com (http://www.tastingbook.com) and the world’s leading fine wine magazines – FINE Magazines (http://www.fine-magazines.com).

For more information about the competition, please visit http://www.bestwineoftheworld.com.

BWW warmly welcomes all vineyards to enter their wine for the competition.

Registration is the easiest, fastest, and most affordable in the business.

Registration opened on May 21 at http://www.bestwineoftheworld.com and judging commences on July 31.

Sea Cider Farm and Ciderhouse is located in Saanichton, British Columbia.

“We were thrilled by the diversity of styles of cider we saw at the competition this second year,” said Tom Wark, director of the DBICC. “No doubt this had much to do with the fact that we had entries from 20 different states and four different countries, which is a testament to the growing popularity of cider in the American marketplace.”

The DBICC strives to raise the visibility of the best ciders sold in the American marketplace. Founded by Dan Berger, the Dean of American wine competitions and directed by Tom Wark, publisher of The Cider Journal, the DBICC accepted entries in 12 categories that were judged by cider and orchard professionals.
