Eve Shares: Why LA Loves Alex’s Lemonade

October 5, 2012 by evebushman

This past Saturday I was honored to attend LA Loves Alex’s Lemonade held on the expansive front lawn of the Culver Studios Mansion.  The fundraiser, named in honor of a young girl named Alex that lost her battle with cancer, was based on raising funds for cancer research – via Alex’s idea of lemonade stands.  (More on Alex’s life, and the foundation, is below the photo section.)

The Event Info

This third L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade event included sampling fare from forty eclectic chefs and mixologists from all over the U.S., wineries and tasty lemonade!

Hosted by Chef Suzanne Goin, business partner Caroline Styne (Lucques, AOC, Tavern), and Chef David Lentz (The Hungry Cat). The honorary co-hosts were Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka.  And, lucky for my teen, a Jimmy Kimmel sighting, as he emceed the event, was an extra thrill.

Now, you thirsty/hungry travelers, here is your story in pics:

Our Founder: Alexandra Scott

Alexandra “Alex” Scott was born to Liz and Jay Scott in Manchester, Connecticut on January 18, 1996, the second of four children.

Shortly before her first birthday, Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer. On her first birthday, the doctors informed Alex’s parents that if she beat her cancer it was doubtful that she would ever walk again. Just two weeks later, Alex slightly moved her leg at her parents’ request to kick. This was the first indication of who she would turn out to be – a determined, courageous, confident and inspiring child with big dreams and big accomplishments.

By her second birthday, Alex was crawling and able to stand up with leg braces. She worked hard to gain strength and to learn how to walk. She appeared to be beating the odds, until the shattering discovery within the next year that her tumors had started growing again. In the year 2000, the day after her fourth birthday, Alex received a stem cell transplant and informed her mother, “when I get out of the hospital I want to have a lemonade stand.” She said she wanted to give the money to doctors to allow them to “help other kids, like they helped me.” True to her word, she held her first lemonade stand later that year with the help of her older brother and raised an amazing $2,000 for “her hospital.”

While bravely battling her own cancer, Alex and her family continued to hold yearly lemonade stands in her front yard to benefit childhood cancer research. News spread of the remarkable sick child dedicated to helping other sick children. People from all over the world, moved by her story, held their own lemonade stands and donated the proceeds to Alex and her cause.

In August of 2004, Alex passed away at the age of 8, knowing that, with the help of others, she had raised more than $1 million to help find a cure for the disease that took her life. Alex’s family – including brothers Patrick, Eddie, and Joey – and supporters around the world are committed to continuing her inspiring legacy through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Our Mission and History

To raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily research into new treatments and cures.

To encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) shares the vision of our founder and creator, Alexandra “Alex” Scott—a cure for all children with cancer.

When Alex, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her first birthday, was four, she told her parents she wanted to set up a front-yard lemonade stand. Her plan: to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure. Her first “Alex’s Lemonade Stand”, held with the help of her older brother Patrick, raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day.

While bravely fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year. As news spread of the remarkable girl so dedicated to helping other sick children, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands—donating the proceeds to her cause.

In 2004 when Alex passed away at the age of eight—her stand and inspiration had raised more than $1 million towards finding a cure for the disease that took her life. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was started by her parents in 2005 to continue the work that Alex began. Our mission is simple: to raise money for and awareness of childhood cancer causes—especially research into new treatments and cures—and to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.

Since Alex set up her first lemonade stand in 2000—truly exemplifying the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”—we have raised more than $55 million.

That money has helped to:

• Fund more than 250 cutting-edge research projects
• Create a travel program to help support families of children receiving treatment
• Develop resources to help people everywhere affected by childhood cancer

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is the living embodiment of Alex’s spirit of determination and hope. Like Alex, we believe that every person can make a difference. Together, we can bring about a cure. Please join us in “making lemonade” today!

L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade Culinary Cookout Returns to Fight Childhood Cancer for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

September 3, 2012 by evebushman

The L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade Culinary Cookout, hosted by Chef Suzanne Goin, partner Caroline Styne (Lucques, A.O.C., Tavern) along with Chef David Lentz (The Hungry Cat), returns to Culver Studios on Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 12 – 4pm for its third highly anticipated season. Neil Patrick Harris and his partner, E! News Correspondent David Burtka, will return as Honorary Co-Hosts  and Jimmy Kimmel, an outstanding champion of this fundraiser and member of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation’s National Advisory Board, will reprise his role as Master of Ceremonies with Viveca Paulin Ferrell acting as celebrity auctioneer. The Presenting Sponsor for the culinary cookout will be Volvo Cars of North America. Goin, Styne and Lentz have again enlisted the support and generosity of their culinary friends around the nation who will donate their time and services to raise funds and awareness for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) in their quest to find better treatments and cures for all kids with cancer.

The 3rd Annual L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade invites food and wine lovers from all corners of the globe for an afternoon of fantastic fare, cocktails for a cause, children’s activities, silent and live auctions, and much more. The 2012 event is shaping up to surpass the aspirations of previous years, with returning chefs Giada De Laurentiis, Paul Kahan, April Bloomfield, Chris Bianco, Marc Vetri, Jonathan Waxman, and new participating chefs Cat Cora, Matt Accarino, Katrina Markoff, Nancy Oakes, Michael Schwartz, Mary Sue Milliken, Michael Voltaggio, Steve Samson, Zack Pollack and Rocco Whalen, coming together to cook for childhood cancer cures (for a complete list, see below). Guests will also experience the cocktail artistry of major mixologists, including Eric Alperin (The Varnish), Neal Bodenheimer (Cure), Tim Staehling (The Hungry Cat), Greg Lindgren (Rye on the Road), Chris Ojeda (Soho House) and Christiaan Rolich (Lucques) who will craft signature drinks for attendees.

In addition to General Admission tickets of $175, L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade will offer a $1,200 premier ticket level including early admission, reserved seating and an exclusive Meet-And-Greet dinner the night before the event prepared by Nancy Silverton and special friends, where guests can meet the participating chefs. Added for this year,  special seating at reserved tables of 10 will be sold for $5,000 each, which includes entry and personal table service.

Children are welcome to accompany their parents to the Sunday festivities and those under 10 receive complimentary admission. Tickets for all levels are available for purchase online at www.lucques.com, www.thehungrycat.com or AlexsLemonade.org/campaign/la-loves-alexs-lemonade. All proceeds will benefit ALSF.

Galvanized by their experience at The Great Chefs Event benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation in Philadelphia, Goin, Styne and Lentz felt ready to partner with their east coast friends and lead the way for a Los Angeles-designed event to broaden the reach of Alex’s Lemonade Stand’s fundraising efforts. L.A. supporters enthusiastically responded with huge turnouts in 2010 and 2011, sampling signature dishes of more than 35 renowned chefs and reaching over $650,000 in ticket and auction sales in just two years. Two auction lots – The Great Women Chefs Dinner featuring Giada De Laurentiis, Suzanne Goin, Nancy Silverton, Alice Waters, Sherry Yard and Vintner Ann Colgin, and The Great Men Chefs Dinner with Paul Kahan, Jonathan Waxman, Michael Tusk, Josiah Citrin, Matt Molina, & Michael Cimarusti, contributed $101,000 of over $170,000 in live bidding in 2011. Goin, Styne and Lentz are already developing stunning dining and experience packages for the fall 2012 event.

“What we’ve accomplished in two years is so gratifying. It’s a tremendous amount of work to produce, but the rewards of knowing that the money we’ve raised truly helps research for cures makes it worthwhile,” said Caroline Styne. “There are so many people that come together to make this happen; they work tirelessly to come up with ideas to make this year’s celebration better than the one before. And we do this because Alex Scott’s legacy inspires us to rise to the challenge.”

“The growth of the L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade culinary event since inception in 2010 has been nothing short of miraculous to watch,” said Jay Scott, Alex’s Dad and Co-Executive Director of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. “While the event may have followed in the footsteps of The Great Chefs Event, it has come into its own creating a relaxed atmosphere on the west coast where the culinary cookout continues to make a difference for kids battling cancer.”

About Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $55 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 250 pediatric cancer research projects nationally.

Rusty Sly: Cucumber Zest

July 23, 2012 by evebushman

As most of you know I travel frequently for my job.  My trips range from a day to many weeks.  The enjoyment of traveling is that I have friends on a first name basis at airports, Super Shuttle, hotels, restaurants, etc.  For this article I am going away from my passion of wine and beers to talk about a drink created at the Cocoa Beach Hilton Hotel in Cocoa Beach,  Florida by their resident Mixologist/Bartender, Gabriel Mora.  The Hilton has been my hotel of choice since the 1990’s.  The Manager, Debra Green, is still in charge of this beach front establishment with great rooms, view, food and, of course, bar(s). They have two bars on site.  One is the Tiki Bar next to the pool with a view of the ocean and the second is the Atlantis Lounge located inside and is affiliated with their Atlantis Restaurant.

The staff at this hotel is fantastic and they all greet me by name from the bellhops and waiters to the bartenders.  Sitting in the bar one night, Gabriel and I discussed the unique flavors and properties of  Hendricks Gin.  Those of you that know me know that this is my all time favorite go to gin, THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE.

The following link:  http://evewine101.com/2011/08/15/rusty-sky-hendricks-gin will provide insight on their process that yields this extremely unique spirit which produces phenomenal smooth flavors without the over abundance of Juniper inherent in other gins.

So Gabriel and I are in agreement about how much we love Hendricks Gin.
buy ivermectin UK buy ivermectin online no prescription

Not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing for me but the hotel carries Hendricks which is rather uncommon in hotels.  Most hotels will carry Tanqueray 10 and Bombay Blue Sapphire as their high level gins.  Gabriel proceeded to tell me that he had created a drink using Hendricks Gin and that it would be on the menu in a week once the board approved it.  As luck would have it I wouldn’t be there so Gabriel, always accommodating,  made a small amount for me to try.

online pharmacy albuterol no prescription pharmacy

All I can say is that this drink is fantastic.  Gab, as his friends refer to him, calls his creation, “Cucumber Zest”, and gave me the recipe to share with all of you:

·         3/4 oz Hendricks Gin
·         3/4 oz St. Germaine Elderflower liqueur
·         1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
·         1 oz Cane syrup
·         Shaken,  not stirred
·         Garnish with a cucumber slice on the edge of the glass and serve

The accents of the cucumber aromatics in the Hendricks along with the unique flavor of the St. Germaine Elderflower liqueur are to die for.  It’s  very refreshing with the slight lemon acidity in the background to help balance the sweetness of the Germaine Elder Flower and cane syrup thus creating a slightly crisp drink.  This method is no different than white wines having acid to add crispness, it’s all about chemical balance.  We need to all thank creative Mixologists,  like Gabriel Mora, for creating interesting and unique masterpieces to drink and enjoy.

If you are ever in Cocoa Beach to catch a cruise or watch a rocket launch I would highly recommend that you stay or,  at a minimum, visit the Cocoa Beach Hilton for dinner and drinks.  You will not be disappointed,  I never am.  I know as I walk up to the entrance Pete (bellhop) comes out and shakes my hand and says, “Welcome home!”  as he has done with me for the last 20 years.  So when you go be prepared to treated like royalty and tell them Rusty sent you, then sit back, relax and order a “Cucumber Zest”.

Cheers,

Rusty Sly

JOSIAH CITRIN LAUNCHES HAUTE COCKTAILS AT MÉLISSE

June 21, 2012 by evebushman

Created in Partnership with Consultants Pablo Moix and Steve Livigni, Mélisse Adds Cocktail and Spirits Artistry to Two Michelin Star Dining

Mélisse, the celebrated two star Michelin restaurant of  Chef Josiah Citrin, is proud to present its impressive program of thirty newly conceived cocktails and highly allocated spirits that have been added to their beverage list. An ambitious collaboration between Citrin, Mélisse Sommelier Brian Kalliel and acclaimed cocktail consultants Pablo Moix and Steve Livigni, the program was completely revamped and developed to match Citrin’s dedicated pursuit of excellence in food, beverage and service.  In keeping with Citrin’s philosophy of using the finest products from local producers and farmers, the new selections are designed to match and complement the artistry and taste of Mélisse cuisine.

Citrin feels that development of the cocktail list is a vital component to the Mélisse style. “We strive for quality in every aspect of the diner’s experience. It just follows that our cocktails should showcase our style as much as anything else we do, from the amuse bouche at the beginning of the meal to our cheese table at the end of the evening,” says Citrin. “This is a logical step in keeping our style current, creative and part of the taste of a today’s discerning guest.”

Moix agrees, saying, “Because Mélisse provides one of the best dining experiences in the country and Chef Citrin’s genius has been so well realized, the focus will always remain on the food.  Our contribution as consultants is to add an extra dimension to the guest experience by creating cocktails that will truly stand on innovation and complement the beauty of Citrin’s cuisine.”

Photo courtesy of Darin Dines ©2012

Each cocktail is prepared with spirits that are in limited distribution and not commonly seen in the industry, including Elijah Craig 18; Pappy Van Winkle 15, 20 & 23; Thomas Handy rye and George T. Stagg Bourbon that are befitting the Mélisse profile of imagination and skill. Among the drinks that debuted are Le Défibrillateur – Oxley Gin, Lillet, Cointreau, lemon; Dauphine – gin, cucumber, lemon topped with citrus air; Gin Pétiller – Plymouth gin, lemon, egg white; Margarita – El Tesoro Reposado, Cointreau, fresh lime; Citrine – El Tesoro Plata, Aperol, grapefruit and lime juice; Surfeur – Appleton VX rum, pineapple, ginger syrup, lime; La Bête – Calvados, Orgeat, white cacao, kumquats; and the Rêve de Singapore – Encanto Pisco (Peruvian brandy), Pineau des Charentes, lemon, pineapple and bitters. Part of the technique of the program is the usage of fresh clear blocks of ice for the cocktails, a new style that puts Mélisse at the forefront in creating premium hand-crafted drinks.

Moix and Livigni, who recently received three nominations as finalists for the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail® 2012 Spirited Awards® for their work with La Descarga and Harvard & Stone, are honored to be working with Citrin.  Together they have spearheaded the Craft Cocktail revival, perfecting drinks, overhauling menus, and heading bar programs for esteemed establishments such as SBE, OneGroup/Gainsevoort Hotel Group and now Mélisse.  Their richly conceptualized and textured themes are featured at La Descarga Cuban Rum Bar, Harvard & Stone, Pour Vous, Black Market Liquor Bar,  and Plan Check in little Osaka. Their work has been featured in GQ, Esquire, Angeleno, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Times Magazine, L.A. Weekly, Food & Wine, L.A. Canvas and 944.

Since Mélisse first opened its doors in 1999, Citrin and his restaurant have been a tour de force in the world of fine dining and a fixture in California’s culinary landscape.  Citrin’s cookbook, In Pursuit of Excellence, debuted in October and is available exclusively through Mélisse, the restaurant website, www.melisse.com, selected retailers and Amazon.  The book is a recipient of the 2012 Indie Book Award and is a finalist for the 2012 Benjamin Franklin Awards competition in June.

Mélisse is known as much for its refined setting as it is its artistic, flawless cuisine and exceptional service.  Citrin passionately frequents local Farmers’ Market and manages to coax unexpected flavors from his carefully chosen ingredients. They are presented as edible works of art.  Citrin’s In Pursuit of Excellence showcases what has kept both the chef and Mélisse at the top of the culinary game.

Mélisse, located in Santa Monica, has become a leading restaurant for fine dining in greater Los Angeles, promising a memorable experience in the artful presentation of Citrin’s dishes served in a setting of supreme elegance with the highest standards of service.

Josiah Citrin and Mélisse have been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, Angeleno, Food & Wine, Bon Appetit, Gourmet, Wine Spectator, Gayot.com, and Zagat. Mélisse’s awards include a coveted Two Stars by Michelin Guide Los Angeles; Top 40 Restaurants by Gayot.com since 2006; #1 American-French Restaurant for Food in Los Angeles by Zagat Guide (2003-2012); and Four Stars by Forbes Travel Guide.
