ONE WINEMAKER’S SPIRITUAL JOURNEY: THE STORY OF JEFF MORGAN AND WHY THE WORLD’S BEST KOSHER WINE HAS “DUAL CITIZENSHIP”

August 22, 2018 by evebushman

Bayonne, NJ – When wine writer Gabriel Geller heard about the man behind Covenant winery, he knew it was an inspiring story, one worth telling. “It’s a story of faith, entrepreneurship, and chutzpah,” said Geller, who also serves as VP of Public Relations for Royal Wine Corp., distributor of Covenant wines in the U.S.

Photo Apr 30, 14 19 22

On the left it’s Ari Erle, the winemaker for Covenant Israel, Jeff Morgan is on the right.

In 2002, Jeff Morgan was at a winemaking conference in Napa Valley, CA when an intriguing topic came up: why aren’t there more good kosher wines? The question led the journalist-turned-winemaker on a quest to produce not just a great kosher wine, but the best kosher wine in the world.

It was a risk. As a long-time writer for Wine Spectator, Morgan knew that kosher wines had come a long way over the past few decades. But he had never made kosher wine before. In fact, his upbringing was so secular that his family had Christmas trees and he had never attended synagogue.

Morgan teamed up with food and wine entrepreneur Leslie Rudd, a fellow non-observant Jew and owner of some of Napa’s most prized vineyards. They enlisted the help of Herzog Wine Cellars, secured OU certification, and the Covenant label was born.

The first vintage was a Cabernet Sauvignon made from Napa grapes, released in 2003, that earned high praises from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate. Two years later, Robert Parker declared Covenant “one of the finest kosher wines on Planet Earth.” And the raves kept coming. Covenant became a boutique brand with a cult-like following.

Meanwhile, Morgan realized how little he knew about Judaism. So, he decided to reconnect with his Jewish roots – teaching himself Hebrew, reading Torah, laying tefillin – with his wife and business partner Jodie along for the spiritual ride. In 2007 he became a bar mitzvah. The couple became active in an Orthodox congregation in California.

It was during a visit to Israel some 15 years ago when Morgan sampled an impressive Domaine du Castel Grand Vin, produced in the Judean Hills, and an epiphany: If he could make kosher wine in California, why not also make it in the homeland of the Jewish people, the place where Jewish winemaking began?

“Israel reminded us of what Napa Valley was like 30 years ago,” Morgan wrote in J: The Jewish News of Northern California last May. “We were inspired to found Covenant Israel, a wine project aimed at investing in Israel and showing support for what we believe is one of the world’s most up-and-coming wine regions.”

That was when Covenant became the first-ever kosher wine to be produced both in the U.S. and Israel. The first bottle of Covenant Israel, a Syrah blend sourced from the Upper Galilee and Golan Heights, was released in 2015. And in 2018, Covenant ISRAEL Blue C Viognier and Adom became available in the United States.  Today, Covenant’s portfolio includes 6 California wines and 3 Israeli wines available in the USA.

In Geller’s view, “Jeff makes a wine in the Holy Land that’s as unique and superb as the wine he makes in California. Covenant Israel was the talk of the Kosher Food & Wine Experience NYC!” The label’s Syrahs, Blue C Viogniers, and Blue C Adom red blend are made in limited batches and consistently earn rave reviews.

“Lovers of premium wines would do well to grab them when they can,” Geller advises. “Those who do will see for themselves what Robert Parker means when he talks about ‘the finest kosher wine on Planet Earth.’”

On a poignant note, the Morgan’s friend, mentor, and Covenant co-founder Leslie Rudd passed away in May. But Covenant is very much a family affair. Jeff and Jodie’s daughter Zoe made Aliyah four years ago and heads up hospitality, sales, marketing, and more in Israel. And Covenant Israel is rapidly becoming one of the most highly regarded brands not just in Israel but in the world.

“As impressive as these bottling are,” added Geller, “nothing impresses me more than the notion that a glass of kosher wine could inspire one family’s spiritual and life journey…and transform the entire wine industry. It’s a story of beshert (destined to be) in the very best sense of the word.”

Two Wines from Catena’s Adrianna Vineyard are First South American Wines Awarded 100 Points from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

August 8, 2018 by evebushman

MENDOZA, Argentina (PRWEB) – Since its inception 40 years ago, a 100 point score from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate has marked the rise of a select few wineries from around the world. Most extraordinary is that this first-time South American perfect wine score was awarded to two wines produced in one vineyard, the Catena family’s Adrianna Vineyard. When Nicolás Catena planted this site in 1992, he was called crazy for cultivating the vines at such a high altitude. Vineyards had never been planted in the Gualtallary District, Tupungato Alto, Mendoza, because the climate was considered too extreme. This award for Argentina’s finest Grand Cru site, Adrianna, marks a historic moment for South American wine.

piramide“Since 1902, every generation of my family has worked to elevate Argentine wine, and these awards for the Adrianna Vineyard are a true recognition for our region,” says Dr. Laura Catena, Managing Director of Catena Zapata.

“Terroir is everything, whether in France, Italy, or Argentina,” Catena adds. “When he planted the Adrianna Vineyard, my father, Nicolás Catena, was seeking an ideal location to make age-worthy wines in Mendoza, a site at the cool climate limit of vine cultivation. The organically farmed Adrianna Vineyard lies at almost 5,000 feet elevation on an ancient dry riverbed with a unique combination of stony and limestone soils, microbiomes and climate, resulting in a labyrinth of different micro-terroirs. By separately vinifying the grapes from each small parcel, we’ve found ‘the gold’ within this site.”

The Adrianna Vineyard River Stones Malbec 2016 comes from a particularly stony alluvial soil section of the vineyard. The small, oval stones provide excellent drainage and moderate the vast temperature shifts between the sunny days and cool nights. The wine’s suggested retail price is $160 per bottle and is scheduled for release in 2019.

Catena Zapata’s head winemaker Alejandro Vigil was also behind the Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary 2013, a partnership between himself and Adrianna Catena, Nicolás Catena’s youngest daughter. A blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec from the cool 2013 vintage, this exciting wine will evolve gracefully in the cellar for many years. Its suggested retail price is $120.

For more information about Catena Zapata, please visit http://www.catenawines.com, and for El Enemigo, http://www.enemigowines.com.

About Catena Zapata:

Dr. Nicolás Catena Zapata and Dr. Laura Catena are the third and fourth-generation of Bodega Catena Zapata, a family winery founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant, Nicola Catena, in Mendoza, Argentina.

Although he was born in a small wine-producing village of just a few hundred inhabitants, Nicolás Catena Zapata sought to understand wine beyond his native Argentina. While studying Economics at Columbia University in the 1970s, and later, during an academic sabbatical in California, Nicolás was inspired by Robert Mondavi’s Napa revolution. Mondavi aimed at making American wines that could stand with the best of the world, and Catena asked himself: “Why not do this in Argentina?” What followed in the 1980’s and 1990’s was the beginning of Catena’s High Altitude Malbec Revolution. Nicolás decided to plant vineyards higher and higher in the Andean foothills, searching for greater concentration and elegance in his wines. Many in Mendoza thought his grapes would never ripen.

Inspired by her father’s quest for knowledge, born from small village roots, Nicolás’ daughter Laura studied biology at Harvard and received a Medical Doctor degree from Stanford. At first, Laura thought she would spend her life drinking, not making her family’s wines, until she came to the realization that her father and country needed her help back home in Argentina. In 1995 Dr. Laura Catena founded the Catena Institute of Wine with the aim of understanding the best high altitude sites in Argentina, and of bringing Malbec back from near-extinction. Malbec had been, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, France’s most important variety from the Middle Ages until the phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th Century, and father and daughter sought to bring back Malbec to its historic prominence. Two decades of soil studies by Laura and the Catena Institute led to the discovery of the special ‘parcelas’ of the Adrianna Vineyard.

Bodega Catena Zapata has been awarded the wine industry’s greatest honors from international food and wine media for its role in Argentina’s High Altitude Malbec Revolution. The family’s vision remains the same as its founder’s, to elevate Argentine wine.

Having worked harvests in California and Burgundy, Kelley noted, “I feel my first-hand experiences further inform my writing and criticism with a deeper understanding of viticulture and winemaking.

” A former correspondent for the wines of Burgundy for the UK’s Decanter magazine and a contributor for The Robb Report and Noble Rot, William was short-listed for the Louis Roederer Emerging Wine Writer of the Year Award. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be assuming this position as a critic for the world’s foremost fine wine guide,” commented Kelley. “To stand alongside the world’s greatest wine critics, led by Robert Parker, is truly an honor and a milestone for me.”

Robert Parker Wine Advocate is equally excited to announce that the coverage of Bordeaux for The Wine Advocate will be assumed by Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW. A Master of Wine with more than 25 years’ experience working in the UK, Japan, Singapore and USA wine industries, Perrotti-Brown brings incredible experience, knowledge and expertise to The Wine Advocate’s reviews of the wines of Bordeaux. “Both as a longstanding lover of the wines of Bordeaux and as a professional who spent the first half of my career devoted to professionally selling, marketing and purchasing Bordeaux wines, taking on the coverage of this incredible region is without doubt the most exciting moment of my wine journey.”

Robert Parker Wine Advocate’s Editor-in-Chief Perrotti-Brown went on to comment, “In 2018, Robert Parker Wine Advocate will be dedicating even more energy and resources to increasing our coverage of wines from throughout the world. Not only will we be producing more tasting notes and articles than ever before, we will be producing them with even greater frequency and timeliness.”

Robert Parker Wine Advocate is currently the most comprehensive wine review publication in the world, with more than 350,000 tasting notes in its database, housed by their seminal wine reviews website, RobertParker.com. “We are in discussions now with hand-selected wine experts from across the globe to add to our current team of nine reviewers next year, expanding upon what is already the largest team of full-time reviewers of any of the major wine criticism publications,” said Perrotti-Brown. Currently producing over 30,000 reviews per year, Robert Parker’s reviewer team aims to produce more than 50,000 reviews per year by 2020. News about the other new reviewers to join the Robert Parker Wine Advocate team will be released in early 2018.

“As our coverage and reviewer team expand, it is increasingly our duty to our readers to make certain that we offer consistent ratings across the many voices and perspectives offered by our team of experts,” Perrotti-Brown added. “With the appointment of Joe Czerwinski as our Managing Editor earlier this year, together we will be implementing a rigorous editorial oversight system to ensure scoring consistency across our team.”

While remaining the foremost “Independent Consumer’s Guide to Fine Wine” is the core of Robert Parker Wine Advocate, the publication and team of experts will also look to step up wine consumer engagement by staging more wine events in the year to come. Highlights in the first quarter of 2018 will include iconic Burgundy dinners in Hong Kong and Rio di Janeiro, featuring rare gems such as Domaines Coche-Dury, Dujac, Raveneau and Ramonet, and another blockbuster two-day event in Zurich. About the MICHELIN Guide
Thanks to the rigorous MICHELIN Guide selection process that is applied independently and consistently around 28 countries, the MICHELIN Guide has become an international benchmark in fine dining. The selections of all restaurants in the guide are made by Michelin’s famously anonymous inspectors who dine in the areas regularly. These local inspectors are trained to scrupulously apply the same time-tested methods used by Michelin inspectors for many decades throughout the world. This ensures a uniform, international standard of excellence. As a further guarantee of complete objectivity, Michelin inspectors pay all their bills in full, and only the quality of the cuisine is evaluated. To fully assess the quality of a restaurant, the inspectors apply five criteria defined by Michelin: product quality, preparation and flavors, the chef’s personality as revealed through his or her cuisine, value for money, and consistency over time and across the entire menu. These objective criteria are respected by all MICHELIN Guide inspectors, whether in Japan, the United States, China or Europe. They guarantee a consistent selection so that a star restaurant has the same value regardless of whether it is located in Paris, New York or Tokyo.

It’s Official: Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon Rivals the World’s Best

September 25, 2016 by evebushman

Thanks to the effort of Paso Robles CAB Collective and its members, Paso Robles’ Bordeaux wines are earning more accolades and fans than ever before. The secret is out: Paso Robles is producing some of the best wine on the planet.

Paso Robles, Calif. – The Paso Robles CAB Collective, (pasoroblescab.com), is proud to share that Paso Robles continues to be recognized as one of the world’s premier regions for Cabernet Sauvignon and red Bordeaux varietals.dhy_0064

In the latest issue of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate,  Paso Robles CAB Collective (PRCC) members were awarded dozens of scores well above 90 points for their red Bordeaux-style wines including 98 points and 96 points for DAOU Vineyards & Winery’s 2013 Patrimony and 2013 Soul of a Lion, respectively; 92 points for Adelaida Vineyards & Winery’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature Viking Vineyard; Ancient Peaks Winery’s 2013 Oyster Ridge Margarita Ranch; 93 points for The Farm Winery’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Cardinal; and 91 points for J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines’ Cabernet Franc-based 2013 Cuvée St. E, among many more.

“While Paso Robles has been synonymous with the Rhône movement for over a decade now, it is worth noting the quality of the Bordeaux varieties coming from these limestone hills today,” writes Wine Advocate’s Jeb Dunnuck. “I’m increasingly seeing incredible wines based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and other Bordeaux varieties from Paso Robles. While it may be hard for readers to believe, trust me when I tell you that these top-quality releases are a match for the best wines from California’s North Coast.”

DAOU’s 98 points is officially the highest score Paso Robles has ever received, and represents the ongoing vision and hard work of the Paso Robles CAB Collective and its members.

Formed in 2012, the PRCC was the brainchild of Winemaker & Proprietor, Daniel Daou, DAOU Vineyards & Winery, who along with J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery, Adelaida Vineyards & Winery, Eberle Winery, Vina Robles Vineyards & Winery and Chateau Margene formed the Paso Robles CAB Collective to actively promote its members and foster knowledge sharing and best practices beyond fence-line chats to ensure producers could craft world-class red Bordeaux-style wine. The Paso CAB Collective now includes twenty two producers – and the list is growing.

“We formed the PRCC to showcase what the region is capable of,” says Daou. “We couldn’t be happier about the resounding success – a success we will all continue to build upon.”

Most recently, PRCC member San Antonio Winery was just nominated as the 2016 American Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine. Last year, Wine Enthusiast magazine awarded American Winery of the Year to PRCC member JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery.

Beyond the glowing praise among critics and sommeliers, Paso Robles’ producers are planting more Cabernet Sauvignon than ever before, ensuring the area continues to position itself alongside the world’s top regions.

More than 55 percent of Paso Robles’ 41,000 acres of vineyards are made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and other red Bordeaux varietals. In 2015 and 2016, roughly 3,000 new acres of vineyards were planted in Paso Robles, of those, an estimated 50 percent were Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Bordeaux varieties are the future of Paso Robles,” says San Antonio Winery Winemaker Ben Mayo, who recently joined San Antonio to help grow the winery’s investment and reach of its high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon program.

Taste these critically acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon and red Bordeaux varietals, featuring over 75 wines from the 22 members of the Paso Robles CAB Collective as you come face-to-face with winemakers at the picturesque Allegretto Vineyard Resort in Paso Robles on Friday, October 14th from 4 to 6 PM. Tickets may be reserved now at www.pasoroblescab.com/events/cabs-of-distinction-grand-tasting. Enjoy live music by renowned vocalist Nicole Stromsoe with guitarist Dorian Michael while you delight in small bites prepared by Executive Chef Eric Olson of Cello Ristorante & Bar. Perlis Picks: Hospice du Rhone, PART II

May 28, 2016 by Michael Perlis

The next day started bright and early with the first seminar on white wines at 9:30 AM. [White wine – it’s what’s for breakfast, right?] John Alban complimented us all on making it to the seminar given what must have been a late wine-filled evening for everyone.

20160416_094239

The white wine seminar was called Costieres de Nimes – A Southern Rhone Exception for Whites. Moderated by Jeb Dunnuck of The Wine Advocate, presenters were Michel Gassier of Vignobles Michel Gassier, Luc Baudet of Chateau Mas Neuf, Francis Collars of Chateau Mourges du Gres and Diane de Puymorin of Chateau d’Or et de Gueules, each speaker presented two wines from their respective wineries:

Chateau d’Or et du Gueules – 2015 Domaine de la Petite Cassagne, Blanc [Grenache Blanc, Rolle]

Chateau d’Or et du Gueules – 2015 Les Cimels, Blan [Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Rolle]

Chateau Mourgues du Gres – 2015 Les Galets Dores [Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Rolle]

Chateau Mourgues du Gres – 2013 Capitelles des Mourgues, Blanc [Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier]

Vignobles Michel Gassier – 2013 Nostre Pais, Blanc [Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Viognier]

Vignobles Michel Gassier – 2013 Lou Coucardie, Blanc [Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc]

Clos des Centenaires / Mas Neuf – 2013 Compostelle Blanc [Roussanne, Viognier]

Clos des Centenaires / Mas Neuf – 2012 Armonio Blanc [Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier]

I apologize if I have misspelled any of the names of the winemakers, wineries or wines. Admittedly, I need to work on my French wine knowledge. Also, please excuse the lack of diacritical marks in this entire series of articles.

I was unfamiliar with the Rolle grape – turns out it is what the Italians call Vermentino.

We loved the fruit, freshness and vibrancy of these wines. This region of the Southern Rhone is devoted primarily to red wine, so this gave us a unique opportunity to taste fairly rare wines from a region that has been producing wine for about 2,500 years.

The second seminar was right up my alley [and everyone else’s] – comparative tastings of Syrah and Grenache from the Central Coast, called A Tale of Two Treasures: Paso Robles and Santa Barbara. In this seminar, moderated by Matt Kettmann of Wine Enthusiast, two wines each were presented by Jordan Fiorentini of Epoch Estate Wines, Russell From of Herman Story Wines, Trey Fletcher of Bien Nacido Estate and Chris Hammell of True Believer from Hammell Wine Alliance. Yes, this was the same Chris Hammell that we had the chance meeting with the previous evening and he was as entertaining during the seminar as he was at dinner, along with all the other participants, which just helped to support the theory that the Rhone winemakers are the coolest of all the winemakers.

20160416_110950

We sampled:

Bien Nacido Estate – 2011 Grenache [Estate, Santa Maria Valley]

Epoch Estate Wines – 2011 Grenache [Sensibility, Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles]

Herman Story Wines – 2013 Grenache [On the Road, Central Coast]

HWA True Believer – 2013 Grenache [Santa Maria Valley]

HWA True Believer – 2012 Grenache [Santa Maria Valley]

Bien Nacido Estate – 2013 Syrah [Estate, Santa Maria Valley]

Herman Story Wines – 2013 Syrah/Grenache [Larner Vineyard, Ballard Canyon]

Epoch Estate Wines – 2012 Syrah [Block B, Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles]

Although I am not much of a blind taster, in this case I wish we could have tasted these wines blind. It would have been fun to try to determine which were which. I’m pretty sure I could have picked out Jordan’s wines, since I am most familiar with hers. Regardless, this was red Rhone heaven.

It was getting closer to the Closing Tasting, but first it was time for lunch, prepared by Chef Brian Collins and his team from Ember restaurant, along with lots of Rhone wines to pair with the food. There was also a live auction.

The day was already a success and now it was time for the Closing Tasting!

THE OTHER WINE COUNTRY? PART III: Perlis Picks Carlisle Winery

February 6, 2016 by Michael Perlis

From Petaluma we headed toward the town of Sonoma itself. With so much happening in the square itself, it is often hard to find affordable accommodations in heart of it all. But a great alternative is practically walking distance from the town square. The El Pueblo Inn offers great modern rooms just a mile or so from downtown Sonoma. Don’t let its modest exterior dissuade you. With the comfortable rooms and beautiful garden this is a terrific choice at an affordable price and puts you very close to all the action.

Photo provided by Mike Officer of Carlisle

But our own action was going to take us farther afield than the town square, so after a restful night, Karen and I left El Pueblo Inn and headed east toward Santa Rosa and then north to Windsor, where we were scheduled to connect with our old friend Mike Officer of Carlisle Winery.

Recently, I was talking about Carlisle with a friend of mine, who is a lover of all things Napa. I explained how Mike had left the software development industry to follow his passion of making wine. My friend equated the story to one of his favorite small Napa winemakers who made a boatload of money in tech, retired and dropped a fortune on some premium property to grow grapes and make $150 per bottle Napa Cabs.

Well, no, it wasn’t like that at all.

Mike developed a passion for wine at a young age and, after discovering that software development was not his passion, started making small batches of Zinfandel with his wife Kendall Carlisle and some friends. Accolades came, production grew, and eventually they went commercial [on a shoestring budget] in 1998.

[By the way, if you want to learn more about the Officers and other really passionate people who went all-in on their love of wine, I recommend you watch the movie American Wine Story.]

Since then Mike and Kendall Officer have been on the forefront of the efforts to save and promote the older and sometimes ignored vineyards in California, focusing primarily on Zinfandel, Syrah and some great field blends. They are truly two of my heroes in the Heritage Vineyard movement.

Eventually, Mike quit his day job and committed full time to the winemaking operation.

For several years, Mike and Kendall made wine at custom crush facilities. But, production eventually reached critical mass and when a winery facility became available in Windsor, they made the next logical move.

Acquiring the winery in Windsor in mid-2013, a lot of work was needed in order to bring it to their specifications to be ready for harvest 2014. And, wouldn’t you know it? Much like 2015, 2014 harvest was early, but they were ready for the first fruit in August of 2014.

There is no tasting room at Carlisle and visits are by appointment only, typically for existing customers who want to taste what’s in barrel for the next releases. And that’s what we did, tasting through a delicious array of barrel samples of the 2014 vintage of Zinfandels [including the Saitone, Carlisle, Papera and Montafi vineyards], Syrahs [Papa’s Block and Rosella] as well as the Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah and Two Acres Vineyard field blend, among others. I can’t wait to get the next release email.

Now for the good news…

Of course, I wasn’t the only one to discover Carlisle early. Robert Parker’s scores in the Wine Advocate were immediately stellar, as were other ratings, and demand forced Mike to quickly create an allocation system. The mailing list soon became full and the length of the waiting list became somewhat legendary. Yet, Mike has always kept his pricing reasonable.

The good news is that, as Mike has continued to discover exciting old vineyards and slowly increase production in the new facility, there is actually some room on the Carlisle mailing list, at least as of our visit. But, don’t wait too long. Production of the 2014 vintage will be around 10,000 cases, 2015 will be a little less due to the smaller harvest. And who knows what the future will bring?

Perlis Picks: CALCAREOUS

January 17, 2015 by evebushman

CALCAREOUS

http://www.calcareous.com/

The Calcareous winery is way up on Peachy Canyon Road, one of those areas in Paso Robles that is far enough off the beaten path that you don’t just pass by on a day of casual tasting. You have to make the effort, and it is well worth it.

CalcareousI’ve tasted the Calcareous wines at any number of events, usually being poured by affable Sales Manager John Teeling. But my wife Karen and I had never visited the winery and tasting room. We rectified this omission recently and I highly recommend you do the same.

High above the Salinas Valley, the visit is worth it for the views alone. [You can take a virtual tour here: http://www.calcareous.com/Our-Story/Photo-Tours.] But, there is so much more than that, as the wines are as spectacular as the setting. Now that Paso Robles has been divided into 11 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), I am trying to learn to appreciate the differences in all of them. I must say that the wines made from grapes grown in the newly designated Adelaida District, which includes Calcareous, are well worth seeking out.

Lloyd Messer and his daughter Dana Brown planted Calcareous Vineyard in 2000, naming it, with no ego whatsoever, after the solid calcareous [limestone] rock on which it was planted. Sadly, Lloyd passed away in 2006, but Dana, with the help of her sister Erika and the rest of the team at Calcareous, have carried on the vision of creating great site-driven wines, crafted by winemaker Jason Joyce and his assistant Tyler Russell. They also use fruit from the Carver Vineyard in the far west York Mountain AVA as well as Zinfandel from Kate’s Vineyard which is just half a mile from the Calcareous tasting room.

We tasted several wines while we chatted with John in the tasting room. Starting with the 2013 Lily Blanc [a delicious white Rhone blend], we found our palates to be now sufficiently refreshed to dive into the rest of the wines to be tasted. In addition to the Lily Blanc, we tried:

2012 Pinot Noir York Mountain

2011 Tres Violet [red Rhone blend]

2011 Cabernet Sauvignon [York Mountain]

2011 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

2011 Syrah Devil’s Canyon

2012 Zinfandel Kate’s Vineyard

All really solid wines. Standouts for me were the Lily Blanc, Tres Violet red blend, the Syrah and the Zinfandel. Not available for tasting was the Moose, which is always my favorite from Calcareous, because it was sold out – I guess it is the favorite of a lot of people! A unique blend of mainly Syrah with a small portion of Petit Verdot, this wine consistently pumps out great flavors. Although not yet released, I was able to purchase a couple of bottles of the 2011 Moose, which I am greatly looking forward to trying. Lovingly named after founder Lloyd, the Wine Advocate recently described this wine as “Hands down the greatest wine I’ve tasted from this estate” and awarded it 94 points.
https://www.parkviewortho.com/wp-content/languages/new/flexeril.html

Also not on the tasting list was the club-only first release of a Malbec, this also from the 2011 vintage. John also graciously allowed us to purchase this, which we had with our dinner later that evening. For you Malbec fans out there – join the Calcareous wine club if you want this wine, it was excellent!
