Tasting pureCru Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine

June 3, 2022 by evebushman

What are the benefits of joining a Wine Club besides better pricing, supporting a winery or winemaker you love and club parties? How about member-only allocations? Wine that the public may get their hands on…or not. This is a one-bottle post on one of those special bottles: the first edition of a Brut Rose sparkling wine from winemaker Mitch Cosentino, and it’s already an award-winner! Here was the teaser:

A SURPRISE ALLOCATION JUST FOR YOU!

Award-Winning Brut Rosé is available for a limited-time to our Members and Private Clients in this special allocation.

There has been a lot of buzz about my new sparkling wine so thought I would share some updates. The pureCru Brut Rosé Cuvee XXI sparkling wine was made as a proof of concept and has been undergoing testing in all forms of the wine marketplace, where it is now proving to be extremely well received. I am honored to share that my first pureCru sparkling wine release took home “Best of Class”, a “Gold Medal”, and “98 Points” at the recent Los Angeles International Wine Competition.

Today, the first of its kind, pureCru Brut Rosé, will be offered as a special allocation to our members and private clients. We only made 200 cases of this limited-release non vintage sparkling and our members always get first-access….Cheers! Mitch.

Eve’s Tasting Notes

We joined Mitch’s club a year or so ago, happy to get our hands on any whites or reds they send our way. This is not only the first Rose of his for us to try, it’s also the first sparkling. Color me happy, and here goes:

The back label of the bottle revealed that the wine had 13.2% alcohol and is a Rosé of Sangiovese. We had Mitch’s Sangiovese before and had liked it too.

The color in itself was just lovely, and darker than what most people would expect; it was a deep raspberry with gold that especially dazzled as the bubbles raced to the top of the champagne flute that held my sample.

On the nose (once I poured my sample into a red wine glass to catch the aromas better than in a flute) I was excited to find stewed red fruits – lots of raspberry, white fleshy peach, pink grapefruit, cherries, biscuit, stems, wet gravel and a tiny hint of sea air.

When I tasted the wine I found an abundance of Red Delicious apple right at the start, then came waves of that same raspberry I was promised from the color and aroma, ripe Rainier cherries, red cherries and black cherries – wow, just a bushel of cherries – and the back palate revealed that same biscuit but this time with a little bit of Brie cheese during the finish. It was beautifully balanced.

What fun this would be in a pairing! I’m thinking of a salad with fruit and cheese, a rare sous vide steak with a cherry reduction sauce, Pork Wellington, dark chocolate (maybe even chocolate covered cherries) or with a strawberry cheesecake. Heck, this wine would be great with just plain popcorn! I was going to have it with a mildly spiced Jambalaya myself…in about 15 minutes!

Sounds good to you? Go to the website to see if the wine is now available to the public, or join the club! I got four bottles, err, now only three! I predict my bottles will all be gone by the end of the summer!

Wine Chips Unleashes Its Private Reserve Club Featuring Small-Batch, Hand-Crafted Specialty Flavors

May 11, 2021 by evebushman

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF – Wine Chips, the innovators behind the first gourmet chip made exclusively for wine pairing and wine snacking, today removed the velvet rope and widened access to its Private Reserve Club (PRC). Having been tested for months by thousands of the company’s most loyal customers, the Wine Chips limited edition flavors have been a huge hit. The Private Reserve Club’s small-batch flavors are produced by the company’s very own Batch Masters in their gourmet Innovation Kitchen in Southern California.

Private Reserve flavors, including Jamon Iberico, Dry Aged Ribeye, Hawaiian Red Sea Salt, Spicy Calabrese, and Sweet Coconut Curry are so exclusive and so special, that club members might have difficulty choosing between them and the company’s flagship cheese flavors.

Fans will love all of the other delicious flavors in the Private Reserve Club store. Prospective members have three club tiers to choose from – Private Reserve Gold, Private Reserve Platinum, and Private Reserve Diamond – starting at $12.99 a month.

The company officially launched at the end of 2019, and saw tremendous growth in 2020, according to Emily Wines, one of the Wine Chips Master Sommeliers and the Chair of the Court of Master Sommeliers, U.S.

“We are so proud of what we have accomplished with Wine Chips and are delighted to launch our Private Reserve Club,” says Ms. Wines. “Who doesn’t love delicious potato chips? Here we have an easy snack that actually stands up to the incredible experience of drinking the wine itself. It’s incredibly easy to explain to customers at the tastings that I do, as the appeal of Wine Chips is just so obvious and intuitive!” she shares.

Sarah Boulay-Haupt is the Vice President of Retail for Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants, and is a big fan of the flavor innovations that Wine Chips offers. “We’ve done a number of collaborations with Wine Chips,” said Ms. Boulay-Haupt. “From a Bombay Spice flavor that we offered to our Cooper’s Hawk Wine Club subscribers to Candied Bacon, a treat that was included in the Screen Actors Guild Award gift boxes earlier this month, Wine Chips never ceases to impress with their creativity and execution,” says Ms. Boulay-Haupt.

Created by an earnest, diverse, and highly committed team, the fresh, hand-crafted chips offer the feel of an instant party when enjoyed with a glass of wine. Alongside a small group of passionate oenophiles, exuberant chip connoisseurs and a talented team of Master Sommeliers, entrepreneur Jonathan Strietzel first embarked on his journey to develop the perfect snack product for wine lovers back in 2017.

Batch after batch, taste-test after taste-test, they collaborated over countless glasses of wine until they found the answer: a lattice cut, extra thick chip, with powerful, flavorful seasonings intended to help wine lovers feel the perfect balance when paired with the proper wine.

Wine Chips began with three flagship flavors – Smoked Gouda, Blue Cheese and Manchego – to enhance one’s experience by creating an equilibrium with the specific fruits, tannins and acidity in the wines. The company has gradually added new gourmet cheeses and other exotic flavors over the past year, and now with the Wine Chips Private Reserve Club, members will receive one exclusive and wonderful new flavor every month. Occasionally, limited quantity flavors will drop without notice. “It’s been a labor of love and the beginning of a beautiful friendship,” said Mr. Strietzel.

Wine Chips is excited to find additional ways to cultivate a following amongst Private Reserve Club members going forward.

Following 350% Increase in Online Sales in 2020, Gary’s Wine & Marketplace Continues to Innovate

February 24, 2021 by evebushman

SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) – Gary’s Wine & Marketplace, one of the largest fine wine businesses in the New York metropolitan area with four locations in New Jersey and a recent expansion to Napa, has launched the Gary’s Plus membership program, an annual membership offering unlimited free nationwide shipping and local delivery, as well as exclusive member discounts, to meet the exploding demand for online shopping options.

“In 2020, we experienced a 350% increase in online sales placed on garyswine.com and our mobile app year over year. More than 35,000 users downloaded the Gary’s Mobile Marketplace app,” says Gary’s Wine & Marketplace owner Gary Fisch. “We are family owned and operated company since 1987. However, we can compete on the national stage given our wide-selection, low prices, white-glove customer service and operational excellence.”

To meet customers’ growing demands for Gary’s online business, the Gary’s Plus Membership allows guests to access unlimited free shipping on all orders for an annual price of $48.99 or free local delivery for $19.99. In addition, members of this program also receive a 15% discount on 6 or more Gary’s Direct wines purchased online and discounts on virtual wine classes led by one of their wine experts.

The program is intended to reward loyal Gary’s customers and increase the frequency of purchases. “On average, an online customer will purchase from the Gary’s Wine website or mobile app 3 times per year. An increase in the frequency of purchases by just a few percentage points would lead to a substantial increase in our overall revenue,” says Mike Fisch, Director of Innovation at Gary’s Wine & Marketplace.

U.S. beverage e-commerce experienced 10 years’ worth of growth in three months’ time at the start of the pandemic (1) and Gary’s has felt its immediate impact. Gary’s reported that 35% of total sales in 2020 were placed online, compared to 12% of sales in 2019. Further, in 2020, customers placed 46,193 local delivery orders and 65,488 curbside pickup orders online. Mobile adoption accounted for much of the growth, with 56% of online orders placed through the Gary’s Wine mobile app.

Highlights over the past year tell the story of a continued effort by Gary’s Wine & Marketplace to engage with guests online:

  • Gary’s introduced live chat in August 2020, offering guests the opportunity to chat with a wine expert as they shop online. Guests took fondly to this offering, engaging in over 12,000 live chat sessions in the 5 months since launching this program.
  • In July 2020, Gary’s introduced five new wine club offerings, perfect for all guests, ranging from the novice to the expert wine consumers.
  • Gary’s introduced virtual wine tastings in April 2020, a white-glove service that offers groups a personalized, unique tasting experience. Through this effort, Gary’s facilitated over 600 private events in 2020, hosted by its expert wine team, each event ranging from 10 to 300 attendees. This represents another shift in pushing digital engagement and e-commerce; 64% of wineries have hosted at least one virtual tasting since March. (2)

These new initiatives are a natural transition in the changing retail landscape and the growth of e-commerce, with sales increasing an estimated 42% by value in 2020, to $24 billion across 10 core global markets according to ISWR. (3)

About Gary’s Wine & Marketplace

Gary’s Wine & Marketplace began as a small wine shop in Madison, N.J., in 1987, and has grown to become one of the largest fine wine businesses in the New York metropolitan area, with four stores in northern New Jersey and a fifth store in Napa Valley, California. Gary’s team of wine experts makes it the preferred white-glove partner for major corporations for customizable events, including virtual tastings and corporate gifting. Commitment to friendly, attentive service by its expert wine team, and a myriad of wine and food events for the public, sets Gary’s apart from other wine stores.

Breaking Bourbon’s “Hudson Confidential” Hillrock Estate Distillery Single Barrel Pick Takes Home Gold at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition

May 7, 2020 by evebushman

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (PRWEB) – Breaking Bourbon’s Single Barrel Club took home a gold medal at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition for their single barrel pick Hillrock Estate Distillery’s “Hudson Confidential.” “We knew that we had selected a special barrel for our Single Barrel Club members the moment we tasted it. We’re proud and excited that the judges agreed,” said Jordan Moskal, co-founder of Breaking Bourbon.

Hudson Confidential is a 117.4 proof single barrel Hillrock Estate Solera Aged Bourbon finished in an Oloroso sherry cask. “Finishing in a 20 yr old Oloroso sherry cask adds depth to the flavor profile, but is subtle enough that many people are surprised when they hear that it’s finished in a sherry cask,” according to Jeffrey Baker, co-owner of Hillrock Estate Distillery.

Breaking Bourbon’s Single Barrel Club focuses on bringing world class barrel picks to its members. By partnering with online retailers, Single Barrel Club members get exclusive access to Breaking Bourbon barrel picks and can purchase bottles that they may not otherwise be able to access in their region. “This honor is a true testament of the high level of quality picks that we are able to deliver to our members,” said Nick Beiter, co-founder of Breaking Bourbon.

Each Breaking Bourbon single barrel pick is given a name that represents the backstory of the particular barrel selected. “For Hudson Confidential, we wanted the name to focus on what we set out to do: Shine light on a great, but often lesser known distillery. We understand those who know about Hillrock Estate Distillery may want to keep this hidden gem a secret. But, we felt that we’d be remiss to not share our experience with this remarkable craft distillery with our club members,” said Eric Hasman, co-founder of Breaking Bourbon. Co-owner of Hillrock Estate Distillery, Cathy Franklin says, “Hillrock was thrilled to work with the three founders of Breaking Bourbon in choosing this special single cask because they are true whiskey connoisseurs and have such developed palates. They share our passion for creating great whiskey.”

Hudson Confidential Tasting Notes:

‍The nose is nicely expressive with bursts of floral aromas, dark fruit, and candied cherries notes that’s punctuated with seasoned oak. The palate is sweet to the tongue, with raspberries, apricots, and raisins. It finishes with a bump of rye spice, followed by oak and plum. Overall an excellent sipper that features a ton of flavor delivered with elegant complexity.

About Breaking Bourbon

Breaking Bourbon is the leading online bourbon review and news destination. Started in 2014, Breaking Bourbon reaches over 2 million unique visitors a year, with the mission to empower consumers to be more knowledgeable in the dynamic world of American whiskey. Garagiste Glendale: Kick Off Party and Grand Tasting

July 12, 2019 by evebushman

Don’t travel through Glendale often, and never been to the Glendale Civic Auditorium, but I’ve covered numerous Garagiste events in LA held at The Wiltern, Santa Monica Bay Women’s Club and Union Station. Traveled to Paso for the event more than once, beginning with their first fest in 2011. And very happy to see that this event, voted the “Best Wine Festival by USA Today readers, has now reached as far as Sonoma and Doug Minnick (one of the founders) said it was their 24th. There’s a reason for their growth and success. We look forward to Garagiste to catch up with small wineries that have been there from the start, and discovering new ones. Here is what we found in Glendale:

Longtime Garagiste founders and organizers l to r: Doug Minnick, Dave and Lisa Dinsmore.

Starting with the “Kick off Party” night of rare, reserves, pre-releases, barrel samples and club member only wines that included a yummy buffet from Fired Up Chef Services (photos), the next day I had a seminar on the growing group of vintners that make their wines from LA Country grapes and then came the grand tasting (more photos). I grouped the kick off party and grand tasting wines together in the Wineries section below and, due to length, will share the seminar and tasting in a separate article on this website today.

Wineries

I have noted the particular wines from either tasting that I found remarkable. If a winery is not noted it doesn’t mean anything in particular, but most likely I just missed them. Asterisks denote wineries at the LA event for the first time:

13th & Third Wines* (2016 Rhone Red), Adron Wines*, Aldina Vineyards* (2014 Cabernet Sauvignon), Alma Sol Wines, Angeleno Wine Co., Ann Albert Wines, Armitage Wines, Ascension Cellars (2015 Soul Searcher Cabernet/Syrah), Bella Luna Winery, Bevela Wines (2015 Unforeseen Alchemy Red Blend), Bodega de Edgar (2016 Nexo Syrah, 2015 Gran Riserva Tempranillo and 2016 Mis Pasos Cab/Tempranillo/Syrah blend), Brooks Note Wines* (2018 Pinot Blanc, 2017 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay and 2014 GSM), Byron Blatty Wines (entire lineup with a special shout out to 2016 “Eventful” blend of Tempranillo/Petite Sirah/Merlot), Cavaletti Vineyards (2017 Alicante Bouschet barrel sample and 2017 Vigneron Reserve Syrah/Cabernet), Changing Patterns, Cholame Vineyard (2014 Estate “130” Syrah and 2016 “The Beautiful One” Petite Sirah), Cloak and Dagger Wines, Copia Vineyards (2017 “The Cure” GSM), DB Cellars* (2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso and 2011 Sete Barbara, Sierra Foothills), DENO Wines (2017 Arneis, 2016 and 2014 GSM, 2010 Two Bills Zin/Grenache, 2009 Paso Ridge GSM), DeWitt Vineyard* (2015 Estate Syrah and 2015 Estate Touriga), Dusty Nabor Wines (love all the wines, special shout out to their 2017 Syrah, Ballard Canyon. Also his wife Karin’s label, Bolt to Wines 2016 Roussanne and 2017 Syrah)), Enriquez Estate Wines* (2015 Muscat, 2013 “Brisa” white blend, 2013 Reserve Pinot Noir and 2013 Reserva Tempranillo), Etnyre, Ferguson Family Winery* (2016 Boomshakalaka Petite Sirah), Frostwatch Vineyard* (2015 Estate Chardonnay and 2016 Ophira Reserve Chardonnay), Gary Kramer Guitar Cellars*, Golden Star Vineyards (Everything as always, big fans of Lee and Helen Williams), Golden Triangle (2015 Cab/Syrah, Willow Creek), Gravel Pit, Greyscale Wines* (2015 Merlot, Oak Knoll Napa), Hoi Polloi Winery (everything, fan of winemakers Behlendorf and Minnick), Kendric Vineyards, Kings Carey Wines*, Kitson Wines (2015 Rafael el Fils Estate Cabernet Sauvignon), Lions Peak Wines* (2012 Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc), LXV Wines (2016 Reserve Cabernet Franc, 2017 “Crimson Jewel” Super Tuscan blend and 2016 “Secret Craving” Bordeaux blend)), Marin’s Vineyard (nice discovery: 2017 Malbec and 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, MCV Wines (2016 Petite Sirah and 2016 “1105” blend), Metrick Wines, Montagne Russe (2015 Dragon’s Back Chardonnay, 2016 Dragon’s Back Pinot Noir, 2016 Alder Springs Syrah), Ocean’s Churning* (another cool discovery: 2014 Chardonnay Los Carneros, 2016 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast and 2014 Heritage Clone 4 Los Carneros), Playground Cellars*, Powicana Farms (2013 Petite Sirah and 2015 Port), Record Family Wines, Republic of Pink, RF Fine Wines* (2015 Arbre Petite Sirah), Rhonedonnee Wines, Say When Wine* (2017 Petit Verdot, 2018 “Stipa” Rose of Mourvedre, 2017 “When” Pinot Noir and 2017 “Rasi” Pinot Noir), Torch Cellars (2018 Tannat/Syrah Rose and 2013 Illumination Red blend), Turiya Wines (Divine Force Cab/Sangio/Petite Sirah), Two Papas Wine* (everything, I’m a fan, 2018 Grenache Blanc was new), Two Shepherds (sorry to have missed this one today), Velvet Bee Wines*, Vino Vargas, Wander-Must Wines* and Zanoli Wines (2016 Syrah).

The Historic Holman Ranch Offers Wine Club Members Their World, by Barbara Barrielle

December 23, 2015 by evebushman

The historic Holman Ranch in Carmel Valley welcomed early Hollywood celebrities and now offers one of the most unique wine clubs in the business as well as first rate estate wines.

006Sprawling over 400 acres with a 6,000 square foot restored Spanish-style hacienda dating from the late 1920s and several revitalized casitas that have welcomed everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Marlene Dietrich to Clark Gable and Marlon Brando, Holman Ranch is much more than a winery. The hacienda alone is a showcase of early Carmel Valley history and its close connection to early Hollywood. There is even a room in the hacienda favored by Charlie Chaplin and it now houses his memories…under lock and key. The enormous swimming pool was the first in the Valley.
For almost ninety years, Holman Ranch has been a place of hospitality and horses, cattle and community. The former owner had the dream of a world-class estate vineyard and that dream has been realized by current owner, Thomas Lowder, and his family. Daughter Hunter manages the brisk wedding and events business and, with her husband, Nick Elliott, they oversee the winery, stables and their own restaurant down the street called Will’s Fargo.

All of Holman Ranch’s wine are estate-grown and include a fruit-forward, food-friendly Pinot Gris and a unique off-dry Pinot Gris with just a hint of residual sugar called 5 degrees Brix – the perfect quaffing wine. Winemaker Greg Vita makes both a “Virgin,” or unoaked, Chardonnay as well as the slightly oaked estate Chardonnay that maintains Chardonnay’s fruit forward apple and pear characteristics with just a bit of toast.

Estate grown Pinot Noirs have become a focus of the winery which enjoys vineyard elevations of 950 to 1150 feet above sea level and is surrounded by the Santa Lucia Mountains and close to the Pacific Ocean. Morning fog and afternoon sun and the vineyard’s rocky soils create the perfect stress on the Pinot Noir vines to increase their fruit profiles.

The single-vineyard Jarman Chardonnay and Pinot Noir constitute the very best of Holman Ranch’s hand-selected grapes and the wines pay tribute to Tom’s wife, Jarman, who died from Alzheimer’s Disease in 2011. The winery donates significantly to research on the disease and does extensive fundraising.

Usually, the only way to stay at this idyllic ranch is to be part of a wedding or event being held on the property. But there is one amazing loophole for members of The Holman Ranch Grand Estate Wine Club. Choose a case of wine (your picks) every six months and the winery ships it to you for free and includes a bottle of estate olive oil once a year and invites to special events. But, the true lure (aside from yummy wines) is a two night stay annually at the breath-taking Holman Ranch in one of their renovated guest casitas that include every modern necessity yet still have an ambiance of rustic elegance. www.holmanranch.com
