How Was “Masters of Taste” LA 2022?

April 8, 2022 by evebushman

The fifth annual Masters of Taste event, held on the field of the Rose Bowl, was last Sunday and we were thrilled to attend.

This is from my social media post the next day:

Oh WHAT FUN we had at Masters of Taste yesterday! This is the event where 100% of the profits go to Union Station Homeless Services! And it was on my birthday this year!

Traveling by limo courtesy my publishers Moe and Linda Hafizi, was an additional treat! Some of the liquor we sampled included wine from Golden Star Vineyards and Ascension Cellars, Lucky Dog (juice box) Sake, Knox and Dobson ready-to-drink cocktails (full article just on them runs 4/22), Smoke Lab Aniseed vodka distilled from Basmati rice is India’s “first premium vodka”, Dulce Vida Tequila, Ventura Spirits for their Amaro Angelino, Roku Gin, Suntory Whisky, Pomp and Whimsy Gin Liqueur, American Born bourbon whiskey, Woodford Reserve, the 1886 Bar at the Raymond…and then there was the FOOD!

If you want to just see the story in photos and videos click this, for more details keep reading!

The Details

It’s always such a rush walking down to the Rose Bowl field from the stadium seats! I always make an immediate right turn and hit as many tables as possible before resting after that first loop around. This is who made an impact this time:

Georgia’s Restaurant made Gretchen’s Jambalaya – the first booth I had food at and it was delicious, flavorful and not too spicy!

The long but fast moving line for delectable Dim Sum from Lunasia Dim Sum House was worth it.

Another line was to sample the food and meet the host chef, Vanda Asapahu, at the Ayari Thai table!

Golden Star Vineyards and Ascension Cellars, two wineries that I’ve enjoyed for years, so it’s always nice to see them on the playing field.

The detail on the animal-faced macarons, an item you can request for special occasions, from Etoile Filante Patisserie was another cool find.

Maneki Wanko Lucky Dog (juice box) Sake: I saw people sipping from juice boxes and was surprised to find that the cute little turquoise boxes with a playful dog design was holding Sake!

Fantasy Frostings makes a killer cake, moist and tasty. I looked at their Facebook and their wedding cakes are lovely!

Knox and Dobson ready-to-drink cocktails made an impact on me again – see the full article just on them April 22 on Eve Wine 101.

Little Llama Peruvian Tacos made a Shrimp Ceviche Tostada that was full of flavor.

Dulce Vida Tequila has THE best flavored tequila in my opinion, this time I enjoyed their grapefruit, on its own as it doesn’t need a thing. And it’s made with real fruit.

Enjoyed discovering Ventura Spirits Amaro Angelino, also their Limoncello. Nice local place to support.

Who doesn’t love short ribs? Chef Gil Saulnier from Mi Piace made a Prime Slow Braised Short Rib over Saffron Risotto and a Mini Crème Brûlée cheesecake too = so very decadent!

Pomp and Whimsy Gin Liqueur was my first big find at Masters of Taste years ago. If you like gin try this liqueur, it softens all that juniper with other botanicals.

I got more comfort food from Granville as they served up their Uptown Mac n’ Cheese!

American Born bourbon whiskey was tasty, again on its own, no mixer needed!

World Empanadas baked several varieties, I wanted to try them all but settled on sharing a Nutella-filled one with my husband. Family run, locally owned and Vegan too.

Woodford Reserve had a huge area just at the entrance, and made a refreshing slush cocktail with their bourbon, lemonade and cranberry juice. I wanted a second one, but that would not do with all that we had to try!

The 1886 Bar at the Raymond always make the best cocktails, on the field and in their Pasadena restaurant!

Bertha Mae’s brownies, in all kinds of flavors, were yummy.

There was quite a buzz going for the Jicama Shrimp Tacos from Mercado! They were sooooo good!

Smoke Lab Aniseed vodka distilled from Basmati rice is India’s “first premium vodka”, and not at all like the sweet or thick Sambuca anise liqueur.

Mignon Chocolate had their fountain flowing and I had a nice freshly dipped strawberry from them!

Enjoyed the Suntory whisky booth for the whisky and the Roku gin.

Seeing two of the Drago brothers and trying their pasta with pork sausage and Gorgonzola from Drago Centre was a big thrill for me.

Vintage Eve Circa 4/15: Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, Reviewed by Yours Truly

June 12, 2018 by evebushman

Not a flavored vodka kind of girl, but when I was sent a bottle of the Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, after reading a rave review of the Ruby Red Grapefruit vodka, I was up for the challenge.

lemon-bg2I chilled my bottle in the freezer before testing it, but right off I noticed that the vodka had a thick quality, akin to a Limoncello. And the color wasn’t “hello I’m yellow” but a more likeable pale lemon.

Now, the cocktail. Though they had provided a cocktail recipe for me (see below) it required basil and I didn’t happen to have basil, so I found another one on the Internet:

1.5 ounce Lemon Vodka

½ ounce ginger liqueur

¾ ounce lemon juice

I don’t do Lemon Drop Martinis. Too sweet even without the sugar rim.

But this cocktail, on the rocks, had just enough tart and sweet to make me and the hubby uber happy. Will definitely be making this again!

From Deep Eddy

(Introducing) cool and refreshing Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, making its way onto the vodka scene in 2015. An Austin original, celebrating the laid back Austin lifestyle, Deep Eddy Lemon is handcrafted with care in the Deep Eddy Distillery in Austin’s Hill Country. Made with real lemons from California, not a flavoring agent, Deep Eddy Lemon creates inventive and delicious libations for entertaining.

The fastest growing vodka in the United States, Deep Eddy is breathing fresh air into the vodka category while supporting local communities in the true spirit of Austin. With a classic Americana look and feel, Deep Eddy brings casual drinking occasions to life.

Deep Eddy Lemon joins four other vodkas in the lineup, including Deep Eddy Cranberry, Deep Eddy Ruby Red, Deep Eddy Sweet Tea, and Deep Eddy Vodka. Some of the most popular cocktails that can be created using the new Deep Eddy Lemon include Lemon Splash (a low-calorie drink), High Dive Cosmo, Lemon Basil Martini, and Deep Shandy.

Here is one to try:

Lemon Basil Martini

Ingredients:

2 oz Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka

2 basil leaves

1/4 oz simple syrup

Directions: Muddle basil in simple syrup. Add vodka, shake and strain into martini glass. Top with basil leaf garnish (optional). Enjoy.

Vintage Eve 8/2012: Eve’s Blood Orangecello Martini with Ventura Limoncello

October 25, 2016 by evebushman

The last time we were in Italy, in 2009, it seemed that Limoncello was served to us after every meal, whether or not we requested it. Especially in Rome and Venice, where dining outdoors and people watching seemed to pair with it best. We became fans.

For the last two years I’ve made it a point to not only visit the Ventura Limoncello Co. table at the LA Wine Fest, but to compliment the rep just enough to get a taste of their newer small batch produced Blood Orangecello.

header_bg

You can’t buy the $14.99 bottle in Santa Clarita. They don’t even want Bev Mo to carry it – as they can’t make enough of it – though they do carry their Limoncello. The rep sent me into…the valley…and to Total Wine in Northridge to find it. I finally made the drive, found the bottle, got it home before I tore off the cap, and made:

Eve’s Blood Orangecello Martini (This recipe is for a single-serving)
1 1/2 oz. vodka
1/2 oz. Blood Orangecello
Shake with ice, strain and pour into martini glass. Garnish with orange peel.

Very refreshing – but with a little different kick is all. Perfect before dinner, on the front porch and a getaway from the maddening crowd.

Vintage Eve March 2012: Santa Clarita Wine Fest – Part Deux!

September 27, 2016 by evebushman

It was a picture perfect day for wine tasting. The pesky wind was held at bay and white wine stayed chilled under the expansive tents while guests collected at tables serving wine, spirits, beer and lots of goodies to pair them with.

Also cool this year was that the event was held at the Bridgeport Marketplace. Guests had the food trucks by day, and by night, so many great restaurants to have dinner in (and sober up!) before driving home: Sabor Cocina Mexicana, Marston’s, SAKE Bistro and Sushi, and Frankie’s NY Italian being some of my favorites.

Faves

The Michael Hoefflin Foundation table had an impromptu raffle set up that few were aware of. For a $10 donation you went home with a $10 bottle of wine…or up to a $100 bottle of wine. Even I bought a ticket. I hope they did well.

The P and the K in P & K Chocolates were charming: Pam Dirickson and Kim Larsen. Serving several different cake bites they were certainly a hit. Reminded me to make the short trip to their Canyon Country store and get a box.

My other personal favorites included Wedell Cellars three Pinot Noirs and one Syrah, B & P Winery’s 08 Merlot, Robert Reyes Chardonnay and White Port, ValBeMar Specialty Coffee, Inception Wines 10 Viognier and Pinot Noirs, Sips Sparkling Cocktails’ Cucumber Mojito, Ventura Limoncello by the shot and in a cocktail, the fun people in the Valencia Cigar Lounge, Rocky Fino, aka “Will Cook for Sex”, The Wine Rack, and the entire lineups from Boutique Sake, JVS Imports for Scotch, Bourbon and Rye, Pacific Edge for Anejo, Tequila and Reposado.

Jenny Ketchepaw on the wine Sexual Chocolate: “I liked the wine, I liked that it’s from San Luis Obispo, I liked the vibe, I liked that it’s young and fresh – great with a chocolate-covered strawberry!”

Kathleen Carson Marquart: “Inception – the purple labeled Pinot.”

Matthew Rungaitis and Christine Andrews: “B & P had the best wines!”

Danielle Whitener: “The Cielo Purple Haze…smoky, and so good!”

Dan and Joanie Warner: “The tequila was great! Our fav wine was Inceptions Viognier…we really liked the limoncello too. Dan did try the scotch.”

Meredith Kent McGowan: “I was impressed with the Malibu hills winery, Cielo!”

Kevin Friend: “Loved the Tempranillo from Witch Creek, also the Roxo Bordeaux blend ‘port’.”

Jacob Stark: “The Firestone Walker Brewery was great.”

Denise Lowe, Fest Sommelier: “It was a crazy day! Everyone was happy, challenges were well-handled and a lotta money was raised for the Michael Hoefflin Foundation. My team worked their butts off and made me look good.”

Q and A for Cocktails on the Roof

wish martini glass for profile picWe’ve been getting a few questions about our Cocktails on the Roof event, so, to keep our positive buzz going we’d thought we’d attack them head on. (And watch our spot on SCVTV here.)

1. Will there be enough food for this to be dinner? With over a dozen restaurants, and about a half dozen specialty food vendors, we should be able to keep both your plate and glass full. (This event is all-inclusive!)

2. What should we wear? As this is a premier cocktail event, cocktail attire of course! But please dress comfortably because we want you, our guests, to be comfortable! (For volunteers and vendors: We want you to be comfortable too, just keep in mind that this is a school district fundraiser and dress appropriately.)

3. Can we keep going past 11pm? Sure, if you want to help clean up! Honestly, we think three hours of drinking, eating, dancing and visiting is plenty. But if you want to continue having fun please visit any participating vendors that will be open past 11pm!

4. Where do we park? You can park in all of the levels of the Macy parking garage and take the elevator up to the party. Note: You can also leave a car overnight at the Macy’s lot and retrieve after 9am the next morning.

5. Can you get tickets at the door with cash, check or credit card? Yes, but the price raises to $95 per person. If we are sold out prior to the event we will make an announcement on social media.
https://www.parkviewortho.com/wp-content/languages/new/lexapro.html

We would suggest that you
get your tickets online now.

6. Should I download Uber before I come? Yes! We also have contacted Designated Drivers of SCV (they drive you and your car home: 661-313-8336) to be on alert. Not to mention the Hyatt is just a block away. And there is plenty of non-alocholic beverages, food, dancing for your designated driver to attend for $55.

7. How big is the mini martini glass we will be given for tasting? Three – refillable – ounces so hold onto your personal keepsake glass!

#8: Tell us about the WiSH organization, the beneficiary of the money raised? The WiSH Education Foundation exists to support the 23,000 students in the Wm. S. Hart School District. WiSH benefits students in Science, Technology, the arts and other areas that enhance academic and career success. WiSH is RAISING THE BAR FOR OUR KIDS!

9. Will I get enough to drink? With bartenders from a dozen restaurants and about 10 spirit vendors, there will be more than enough. Please drink responsibly by pouring out drinks you don’t care for. Also be mindful if you are not used to drinking different kinds of liquor. We also will have lounge seating, plenty of water and a coffee vendor.

10. It looks like your vendor spots are all filled, nearly ten more than we had planned at the last event, are there sponsorship possibilities for those businesses that want to be included in the buzz? Okay, we made up that last question but it’s a good one. Our event is made possible by ticket sales, but is majorly assisted by our generous sponsors. Our entry level sponsor, at only a $1,000 contribution, still gets advertising, social networking, signage and tickets!

Still have questions? Email: WiSH@hartdistrict.org

Limoneira, a Ventura County Treasure of Lemon Everything, by Barbara Barrielle

January 22, 2015 by evebushman

Limoneira is one of the largest producers of citrus in North America and it is headquartered in charming Santa Paula. Limoneira lemons, other citrus and avocados appear in so much of what we eat, drink and use in our daily lives.

Limoneira photo 1I knew little about this publicly-traded company that has over 3500 acres of agricultural lands under cultivation until they sponsored a Lemon-based Mixology contest, or a “Lemon Mix-off” at the Sofitel in November to kick off an international series of mixology contests in New York, Chicago, Hong Kong and other venues.

Some of the best mixologists in LA came together to compete in a lemon-based cocktail mash-up that judged their creations on creativity, texture and downright use of lemon flavor.

Also at the event were local spirits producers that are customers of Limoneira and use their lemons in their own expressions of flavor. Ventura Limoncello and Greenbar Craft Distillery’s organic spirits are stand-outs among local producers. Diabolo French Soda and Four Brix Winery rounded out the Ventura County purveyors at this inaugural LA bash.

Patrick Reynolds, bartender at Wildcat Lounge and the “Farm to Bar” columnist at the Santa Barbara Independent, created the “ManawaTrois” a spicy, complex and refreshing concoction that triumphed over creations from other top LA bartenders. Reynolds will now compete internationally against victors from Limoneira cocktail contests around the world. His ManawaTrois recipe is below.limoneira photo 2

The Limoneira Company also makes a full line of body, face and lip products, all with healthy lemon as their main ingredient. Funny how this 120 year old Santa Paula company has reach far beyond Ventura County and is integral in so much of what we drink, eat and slather on! www.limoneira.com.

Manāw a trois by Patrick Reynolds

Translated, Manāwa means “lemon” in Thai. In this Thai-inspired cocktail, lemons are used three ways.

Breaking the Cycle while Savoring the Season (Vintage Beacon 10/09)

September 2, 2014 by evebushman

I left Santa Clarita again for a wine event!  I hate to shock you but this job can be somewhat demanding at times, as there are so many worthy charities that food and wine find their way to.

I learned about Break the Cycle’s annual Savor the Season event last year at a special reception in the Santa Clarita home of Paul and Jo Ann Vindigni.  What I gathered there, and since, is that there are some remarkable people, both on the local and national level, raising awareness and working to break the cycle of domestic abuse.

I ran into Paul at this year’s Savor the Season event and had just a couple of questions for him before I lost myself in the goodie bag the evening had all wrapped up for me.

What is your role in the organization: I serve on the Board as the Treasurer of Break The Cycle.  I work with the organization’s staff to help ensure that Break The Cycle remains financially healthy so it can continue to provide great programs for our youth.

Of all the non-profit charities, why this one Paul: I have seen numerous instances of dating abuse in our own community and Break The Cycle offered a chance for me to help on a local and national level.  Most people don’t know that one in three teens experience abuse in a dating relationship and a majority of these instances never get reported to anyone. The impact on our teens can be devastating.

Tell readers what you want to about Break the Cycle:  The people at Break The Cycle are amazing! They are passionate about the organization’s mission to provide teens with the preventative education and programs for youth activism so they can build lives and communities free from dating violence. There are plenty of opportunities for people to volunteer. Just check out our website at breakthecycle.org.

Now onto more things to savor!

Ventura LimoncelloCalled “One of the top ten food & wine events in Southern California” by Biz Bash, Savor the Season is one of LA’s premier galas. Held in The Lot Studios in West Hollywood, the entrance was lined on both sides with competing venues for my palate.

While I savored Oyster Gourmet Christophe Happillon’s hand shucked oysters I also tried Rick Raile’s Amano artisan chocolate, perfect for wine pairing.

The Naked Pint beer ladies held my attention with a blond ale while the Ventura Limoncello Company teased me further by the fresh taste of both the straight and cream versions of their locally-grown liqueur.

From there I spied the Tasty Cloud table laden with candy-flavored jello shots and decadently rich truffles from Delicious Wishes of Beverly Hills.

I made a pit stop at one of the two bars set up at each end of the venue and tried what the gentleman in front of me had: Blueberry Van Gogh Vodka with soda.  Also at the bar was Chateau St. Michelle wines, Sierra Nevada beers, several other Van Gogh Vodkas, DRY soda and O.N.E. Natural Experience.

I inhaled BoHo Bohemian Hollywood’s Risotto as well as treats from Divine Palate, Water Grill, Domenico Ristorante and Andaz West Hollywood.

Andaz was one that the sommelier in attendance, Bonnie L. Graves, told me not to miss.  She also told me why she supported the event.  “I’m passionate about this organization,” began Graves.  “This is my fourth year at the event.  I’m happy to pour for them.  I was impressed with their organization and commitment to help young women.”

I took a goodie bag home from Bittersweet Treats that included minty-flavored homemade marshmallows, oatmeal cookies and what tasted like a soft homemade Oreo cookie.  Suffice to say the drive home wasn’t all that bad after all.

Bongiorno Ciao Bella! (Vintage Beacon Circa 7-09)

July 1, 2014 by evebushman

She’s bacccccccccccccck.  Missed all you Beaconeers like nobody’s business!  Sure they had the oldest wine bar in the world in Ferarra, Italy.  But they’re not like our wine bars here, where everyone knows your name – in English.

My husband Eddie, in Venice, Italy enjoying his Aperol Spritz

My husband Eddie, in Venice, Italy enjoying his Aperol Spritz

Yes, we snuck away for almost 3 weeks to Venice, Rome, and Florence where all of the Tuscan sun blazed on our backpacks.  But we also ventured to Ferarra, Ravenna, Verona and Bologna.  And, as we had the 14 year-old daughter Samantha there for her first trip, it wasn’t all about the wine.

Answering one Question

Hey Eve. Your pictures are great. What was your itinerary? We have been to the regular tourist spots: Rome, Venice, and Florence but would love to go back and not hit the same old same old. Any suggestions?
(Photo link: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1164517440530.25716.1455706632&type=1&l=48c99cd73a )

Ferarra – everyone, and I mean everyone, on bicycles, makes for a very interesting afternoon sipping Aperol spritzers and people watching, a great castle w/moat, pumpkin ravioli and the oldest wine bar in the world.Ferrara – Everyone, and I mean everyone, gets around on bicycles, which makes for a very entertaining view while sipping Aperol Spritzers (Aperol liqueur, Prosecco sparkling wine and fizzy soda water) in sidewalk cafes.  The walled-in city of Ferrara also has a great castle with a moat, a decent sushi bar and, the oldest wine bar in the world.

Dating back to 1435, the walls of al Brandisi . Ferarra – everyone, and I mean everyone, on bicycles, makes for a very interesting afternoon sipping Aperol spritzers and people watching, a great castle w/moat, pumpkin ravioli and the oldest wine bar in the world. (This will be in Friday’s columns with the West Ranch Beacon too…)are hidden behind dusty bottles of wine, scotch and bourbon.  The bar itself is on a narrow cobblestone street that looks more like an alleyway.

(Samantha was awed to find that every place we ordered wine allowed for her to be a grown up.  The drinking age in Italy is 16, or up to a parent’s discretion, we allowed her to linger over our ‘tasting pour’.  She never finished the amount served….and had more fun checking what the waiter called a “Tupka” Turkish bathroom complete with foot holds and a porcelain h— in the ground.)

As we suggest to others, and have read for ourselves, you should try local wines and foods when traveling.  The local wines our server suggested that night were a Fortana and a Merlot, each between 3-4 Euros a glass. I enjoyed the Fortana enough to warrant a second glass and got a very quick peak at the label: Burson Randi with 14% alcohol.

One other note of what we dug: the practice of “Avinare”.  When our bottle was opened (even when just ordering by the glass each bottle was freshly opened) our wine glass was rinsed with wine “to remove water and impurities from the glass”.  I found more here about this practice: http://www.ibabuzz.com/bottomsup/2008/09/23/la-sommelier-practices-stem-priming-or-avinare/

We also had a great wine, and the town’s famous pumpkin Ravioli, at Antica Osteria Al Postiglione: 2004 Colutta Gianpaolo Schioppettino.  The Schioppettino varietal being one I looked for in other parts of Italy…but never found among the thousands they produce.  http://www.coluttagianpaolo.com/vino_eng.htm

Bologna – The food (The king of our bologna is their mortadella, our jarred meat sauce is their Bolognese and our hotel’s “breakfast included” took on a whole new meaning.), remarkable leaning towers and a Basilica that the Pope cut off funding for as it was to be as big as St. Peter’s – was also a place to sip more Aperol Spritzers, try the local fizzy-cold-red Frizzante just once, and enjoy the “complementary” spread of liquor set up daily at the Hotel Corona d’Oro since 1890.

Ravenna – Historical churches and Basilicas – so many in Italy – but these are covered in tiny mosaics.  Day trip = no wine.

Verona – Juliet’s home is just a tourist spot but pretty, as are the views of the city…another day trip and again no wine.  We were done with those.

The Beaten Path

Rome – After the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, a chain of wine stores: two Enotrevi,  two Enotecas, a Guerrini and a Vinovip were big on pouring tastes of cream based liquors with grappa.  We went from berries to nuts to chocolate and finished off with limoncello.  Nice way to wile away an afternoon, or two, if you can’t get back to your hotel room for a proper siesta.

Vudabar offered almost a dozen champagnes by the glass and a great wine list.  The Blue Ice gelato chain with 16 stores only in Rome, not yet making wine-flavored ices, was a nice palate-cleanser.  And dinner, at Hard Rock Roma, was noisy but the water didn’t come in a bottle with or without gas and the Grey Goose martinis were a welcome change.

Venice – My husband Eddie’s favorite European city with its seemingly endless canals and bridges, all go to St. Marks Square/Piazza San Marco.  We were lucky to pass plenty of café’s to have our Spritzers and Vino Blanco during the day time.

Of note for us was VinoVino (http://www.anticomartini.com/eng-index.html) with an excellent food menu and wine menu to match, and, a restaurant we dined in 25 years ago that was still serving Pasta Carbonara and Quattro Formaggi pizza: Pedrocchi.  With its bright awnings opening up into a quiet piazza we were reminded of dining there as weary travelers with other ‘kids’ we had just met…

Florence – Staying across the street from the Duomo, we saw the finely sculptured David and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus among a bazillion others, the Bridge of Gold and Michelangelo’s…park.  In between we dined at the same touristy restaurant twice – as Samantha liked it.  Wish we could’ve found something remarkable in the wine…better luck next time.  And yes, there will be a next time!

NINE TIMES: LA Wine Fest

June 6, 2014 by evebushman

One of the first wine fests I attended as press was the LA Wine Fest.  Founder Joel Fisher was very kind in extending passes and personally welcoming us at the event.  Since then I’ve covered the 500+ winery/brew/spirit event in photos, as my hands are always too full with a wine glass and program to manage a pad and pencil.

James Carling, Ventura Limoncello

James Carling, Ventura Limoncello

Through the fest I’ve also benefitted from Sake, Scotch and even cheese pairing classes that Fisher offers from a wide variety of educators.  The first time I had Ventura Limoncello, Herzog Cellars, Roxo Port, and wines from Ventura County was at the fest.  I have fond memories of meeting friends from both Santa Clarita and Los Angeles, as well as people-watching a new generation of wine friendly people.

So, without further adieu, here is photo album link that pairs with the descriptions of what I sampled (below): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10203084160692339.1073741874.1455706632&type=1&l=60db4f2cb6

Tasted

www.BondBars.com had a homemade bark made from Belgian chocolate, not overly sweet and perfect for my palate.

From www.CieloFarms.com, we enjoyed their Woodstock Collection 2012 Purple Haze and 2011 Anthem red blend.

It was nice to find www.CaseyFlatRanch.com after discovering them earlier this year at Family Winemakers.  I enjoyed their 2013 estate Sauvignon Blanc, Rose and Viognier wines while my husband got his first taste of their 2010 Estate red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Mourvedre.

I spied sommelier Adem Sash of Del Frisco’s Grille leading a pairing seminar to a nice crowd of press and wine tasters.

I took the “Nut Tasting Tour” cleverly offered by www.CrazyGoNutsWalnuts.com and learned that I liked walnuts flavored with orange almost as much as the ones with Parmesan.

The very first display from the Van Ness entrance was from uber-popular www.CupcakeVineyards.com.  I stopped long enough for a splash of refreshing prosecco.

Tried something new at www.DirtyTequila.com: a Dirty Margarita made with their cinnamon and pineapple infused tequila.  Loved it.

www.ReyesWinery.com was there with attentive crowds in both the VIP lounge and at a pouring table sharing their award-winning wines. dirty tequila cocktail

Though the “chocolate man” has melted at the www.EOSChocolates.com table, the samples did not.  Very nice chocolates with flavors ranging from orange to ginger to crushed nuts to pepper.

Greg Martin, winemaker and owner of www.SevenAngelsCellars.com in Paso Robles was very interesting.  His seven kids, angels at one point, were the namesake of the winery, and he made well over 7 wines that we enjoyed: 2010 Petite Sirah, 2011 Kindred red blend, 2011 Grace red blend, 2011 Confession red blend, and several whites including a 2012 Grenache Blanc.  Will definitely be watching this winery.

Loved all of the blends, again, in the www.JadaVineyard.com lineup: 2010 Malstria, 2010 XCV, 2010 Jersey Girl, 2010 Jack of Hearts and 201 Hell’s Kitchen.

Every time I get to try www.VenturaLimoncello.com I’m a happy girl.  Owner James Carling also served up a cocktail with vodka, sparkling water and ice, and my favorite Orangecello.

Tasted a few wines from www.BEvineyards.com: 2009 Merlot and 2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon while chatting up with www.LAWineFest.com founder Joel Fisher and his right arm/daughter Sara Fisher Chapin.

Picked up a copy of Len Napolitano’s book, “Nose, Legs and Body” for review – looks like it’s perfect for wine 101ers!

Greg Martin, Seven Angels Cellars

Greg Martin, Seven Angels Cellars

Had a surprise from Temecula Valley: www.LeonessCellars.com impressed me with their lineup that included a 2011 Grenache, 2010 Meritage of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot, 2011 Syrah and Port.

Also from www.TemeculaWines.org, I found both a 2011 Lorimar blend of Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Mourvedre, and 2011 Hart Syrah.

I gave singer Nicki Minaj’s MYX fusion drinks a shot and thought the coconut would pair quite nicely with a little sparkling water…and a bikini.

www.RoxoCellars.com served up several of their yummy Paso Robles’ ports: 2009 Paso Mélange, 2009 Ruby Tradicional and 2008 Magia Preta.

The spiced up nuts from www.SanteNuts.com went well with all of the wine, beer and spirits.

Both our local winemakers, Nate Hasper and Steve Lemley, of www.PulchellaWinery.com, were on hand for the first time sharing their Paso wines at the fest.

www.ShortMountainDistillery.com wowed me with their aptly named “Shine” version of Tennessee Moonshine.

Gotta love this tagline, “KOOKSOONDANG puts human beings on the front burner before brewing wine” and a lineup that included Grapefruit Rice Wine (I was told that the rice wines are made in Korea and not allowed to be called Sake), Raspberry Rice Wine and Plum Wine.  Check them out at www.BeksejuUSA.com or in your local Korean market.

At www.JVSimports.com I enjoyed two single malts: the very smooth and nutty Tamdu and the richly-peated Smokehead.

The very large www.StellaArtois.com tent did a brisk business.  The lovely ladies clad in red served up several beers, including a hard cider, in their appropriate glassware.  The guests really dug getting a full glass, and being able to take the glasses home.

Tom Dehn’s White Sangria

June 1, 2014 by evebushman

I find part of the fun with making Sangria is the lack of exacting proportions. If course, some will taste different, and others I assume benefit from being precise, but in this case, I just eyeballed it.
buy xifaxan online https://mabvi.org/wp-content/languages/new/canadian/xifaxan.html no prescription

My glass jar is around 1.6 Gallons, so that’s what we’ll go by here.

Ingredients

1 whole Pineapple

1 lemon

2 Navel oranges

2 small peaches

2 Kiwis

1 Fuji Apple

1 Pear.

Use the cheapest wine you can because the flavor will get lost anyway. In this case, Carlo Rossi Muscat.

For the soda, any will do, flavored or not.

Tom Dehn Muscat SangriaDirections

Fill container half-way with the wine, add the cut fruit, then top off with soda.

Some folks like to add Vodka or Brandy, or liqueurs such as Limoncello.

Sugar can also be added to taste and to aid the fermentation. Simple, and refreshing!
