Los Angeles, CA – Come celebrate and be part of the 5th Anniversary Masters of Taste, L.A.’s premier outdoor, luxury food and beverage festival that will take place on Sunday, April 3rd, 2022, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on the field of the iconic Pasadena Rose Bowl!

Masters of Taste is introducing Chef Vanda Asapahu as it’s first-ever female Host Chef of Masters of Taste 2022, which also happens to mark the 5th Anniversary of this celebrated event. Culinary Master and 2022 Host Chef Vanda Asapahu is the chef and owner of Ayara Thai and she has participated in Masters of Taste since the event’s inception in April 2016. Asapahu went to college at UCLA and to graduate school at Yale, then she spent four years living, traveling, and working her way through Thailand before returning home to Los Angeles. During Asapahu’s stay in her native country, she took extensive notes, which included absorbing the Bangkok Street Food scene and reviving old family recipes. After cooking with relatives and eating her way through the streets and countryside, Asapahu brought back treasured old recipes and new flavors to share at Ayara Thai. While her mother, Anna Asapahu, still helms the family kitchen, Asapahu is the vanguard, taking up the torch of her family’s culinary tradition at Ayara Thai, and under her leadership in May of 2019 Ayara Thai was named one of Michelin Guide California’s 2019 Bib Gourmands.

“I have had the pleasure of participating in Masters of Taste since its inaugural year,” states Asapahu. “As a proud UCLA alum (Go Bruins!), I’d give anything for the opportunity to cook, eat, and dance on the field of the Rose Bowl. Now I get to! The most amazing thing about Masters of Taste is that 100% of the proceeds go directly to benefit Union Station Homeless Services and not many food festivals can say that. Union Station Homeless Services is committed to ending homelessness in Los Angeles.”

Masters of Taste 2022 will bring over 3,000 food and beverage enthusiasts together for one afternoon to celebrate this exhilarating festival, which will include the finest fare from over 100 Culinary Masters and restaurants, delectable sweets prepared by L.A.’s top Sweet Masters, top Beverage Masters who will be featuring signature handcrafted cocktail tastings from over 25 spirit brands and bars, along with select wineries, local craft breweries, cold-pressed juices, cold brew coffee, live entertainment and much, much more.

This year, Masters of Taste falls in April, during which Thai New Year, Songkran, is also celebrated. Chef Vanda has invited 3 other L.A. Thai restaurants, to participate in the Songkran Thai SELECT Pavilion, a celebration spanning the Rose Bowl’s end zone. The transformation will reflect a traditional Thai sundry general store and Songkran festival. As a culinary challenge, each Thai restaurant will prepare a dish, dessert, and/or cocktail using a common paste, sahm kler (which translates to “3 buddies”), and comprises white peppercorn, garlic, and cilantro root. This aromatic mixture is used in a variety of Thai dishes and is quite possibly the reason why Thai food is so special. Like sahm kler, the 3 buddies paste, the 3 other restaurants comprising the Songkran Thai SELECT Pavilion are 3 of Chef Vanda’s personal buddies!

100% of the proceeds from Masters of Taste 2022 will directly benefit Union Station Homeless Services, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is committed to providing permanent solutions to end homelessness and rebuild lives. Headquartered in Pasadena, CA, Union Station has served the community for nearly 50 years and today it is the San Gabriel Valley’s largest social service agency assisting homeless and very low-income adults and families. In addition to its recent expansion into El Sereno and Eagle Rock, Union Station Homeless Services is the lead County agency for Service Planning Area 3 (SPA 3), coordinating homeless services in 36 communities, with a combined population of over 1.5 million across the San Gabriel Valley. Union Station Homeless Services’ mission is guided by the belief that everyone deserves a life of dignity and a place to call home. In the last four years Masters of Taste has raised over $2 Million in support of Union Station Homeless Services life-saving programs.

This year Masters of Taste 2022 will partner with Careers Through Culinary Arts Program, Los Angeles (C-CAP LA), a national 501(c)(3) non-profit founded by culinary educator Richard Grausman in 1990 and Co-Chaired by Chef Marcus Samuelsson. Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) provides culinary, job, and life skills to over 20,000 middle-and-high school students in seven regions across the United States: New York City, Newark, Philadelphia and Camden, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Arizona, including 7 Navajo Reservation schools and was named a National Apprenticeship Program by the U.S. Department of Labor in 2021. Due to the restaurant industry labor shortage, the Los Angeles Region, C-CAP LA will be partnering with Masters of Taste by bringing high school student volunteers to assist this year’s Masters of Taste 2022 Culinary and Sweet Masters throughout the event to gain real-time event training while helping support these incredible chefs and restaurants that are participating in this year’s event.

August 7, 2021 by evebushman

Plant-Based Menu and Beverages are Featured at the Ford Terrace Café and Grab & Go Market

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Ford, the 1,200-seat Los Angeles amphitheater nestled into the Hollywood Hills, announces a new culinary program designed by celebrated chef and community activist Jocelyn Ramirez of Todo Verde. Beginning July 30, 2021, attendees of The Ford’s performing arts programs began to order food and beverages at Todo Verde at the Terrace or the Grab & Go Market with Ramirez’ flavor-rich and healthy plant-based menu of dishes and drinks.

Jocelyn Ramirez founded Todo Verde in 2015 with a mission to create delicious and healthy foods inspired by her Mexican and South American roots for her Eastside Mexican community. As one of the most popular vendors at Smorgasburg LA, Ramirez continues to learn about the health benefits of nutrient-dense food and healthy ecosystems and shares her knowledge of healthy living through workshops, dialogues and food demonstrations throughout the community.

Ramirez is thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce her menu at The Ford, stating, “This is such a moment for chefs of color in Los Angeles, and I’m honored to be a part of The Ford’s season as the first plant-based food concessionaire to take over a major music venue in the city of Los Angeles. Just six years ago, Todo Verde was founded and has become a staple across LA’s farmers’ markets and Smorgasburg LA. Now we are happy to call The Ford home, serving up some of our signatures like tacos de carnitas, ceviche, mulitas de chorizo and more.”

In addition to three types of tacos – Mushroom y Mole, Jackfruit Carnitas con Pipian Verde and Chorizo-Spiced-Seared Mushroom, – Todo Verde offers several dishes to share: Ceviche de Palmitas with hearts of palm in citrus and olive oil served with avocado, tomato, cilantro, jalapeño, cucumber, black sesame & tortilla chips;  Como La Flor of quinoa, cilantro micro greens, tomato, cucumber & orange, served with citrus-dressed mixed greens; Mulita of house-made cashew cheese melted between blue corn tortillas with house-made plant-based “chorizo,” cashew crema & pickled red onion; Nachos with house-made plant-based nacho cheese over tortilla chips with choice of plant-based “chorizo” or jackfruit, cashew crema & pico de gallo; and Poblano Mac y Cheese with fire-roasted poblano cashew queso and wheat semolina macaroni.

Desserts include Cacao Pudding, a cacao-and avocado-based pudding spiced with cinnamon, vanilla, maple syrup with strawberry reduction, dehydrated strawberries & pistachio crumble; and Plant-Based Cheesecake of creamy cashew-based lemon cheesecake with toasted almond cashew crust, cacao ganache and lemon zest.

To complement these menus are Todo Verde’s refreshing agua frescas, Strawberry Rose and Black Rice Horchata, which are available in both non-alcoholic and spiked versions using craft spirits. Guests may select craft beers from SouthNorte Beer Co. (San Diego) and Baja Brewing (Tijuana) and natural wines from small producers Sassara and Las Jaras wineries.

The Grab & Go Market features some of Todo Verde’s favorite food businesses that embody the cultural flavors that define Los Angeles. Carnivores, pescatarians and vegetarians can choose from Ramirez’s curated collection: George’s Boyle Heights Bean & Cheese Burrito or Ground Beef Burrito; Seoul Sausage Korean Fried Chicken; Bridgetown Roti Garlic Trini Eggplant & Scallion or Green Curry Shrimp & Potato; Toss It up Caesar Salad or a Southwestern Chicken Salad; Maison Matho French Ham & Butter Sandwich; Mama Musubi Curry Chicken Musubi or Yuzu Salmon Musubu; and Plantae Sushi Miso Avocado Roll or Spicy “Tuna” Roll. Ramirez includes a vegan and traditional Cheese Box served with accompaniments, and for dessert, Madame Shugah cookies; Omiso cookies; Bijoux Macarons; Coolhaus dairy-free ice-cream sandwiches; and Buttery Co kettle and cheddar corn. The Grab & Go Market offers an expansive selection of local craft beers and natural wines by the glass and bottle.

Reviewing the “Swankey” Wine Tote, a “Supersized” PortoVino Wine Purse!

May 28, 2021 by evebushman

Who likes swanky purses? One that can fit up to FOUR BOTTLES OF WINE, with a liner and a spout! The “Swankey” Wine Purse is the latest from the Porto Vino Wine Purse company and I absolutely adore it! When I did this video the opened pouch on the outside of the purse looked like it was talking at me! I loved all of the different prints to pick from and chose this bright baby as I thought it would look good by my swimming pool, with nice chilled wine in the outside pouch and goodies kept cool on the inside! How does it look to you?

Come to find that the new swanky purse came with an extra-large insulated lining and pour spout, much like my first purse from this company, that is easily “hidden” from unwanted viewing. It’s convenient and a conversation piece – if I choose to share what I’ve got! Love that I can use just like a regular purse as it’s plenty roomy inside for everything I normally carry. But now I can normally carry…wine! Along with that, the insulated interior allows me to store plenty of food and drink inside the bag, while I store wine in the hidden panel outside. I am now picnic, pool and party ready!

The press release with more information is below:

PORTOVINO WINE PURSE ACQUIRES THE SWANKEY BEVERAGE TOTE BAG, THE PERFECT, BIGGER SIZE, ADDITION TO THEIR COLLECTION OF CONVENIENT AND FASHIONABLE WINE PURSES

Phoenix, ARIZONA -The time to expand the PortoVino Wine Purse collection has come. The “fashion meets functionality” company recently made a super-size addition to their already incredible collection of wine bags by acquiring the Swankey Beverage Tote Bag.

Portovino, the Wine Lover’s go-to purse brand, allows you to discreetly store and pour up to 2 bottles of wine, or your favorite drink “on the go”, and the new addition to the collection, now brings even more to the table. The Swankey Tote, or as we like to call it, the Supersized PortoVino, not only allows you to fill up the included beverage pouch with up to 4 bottles of wine or 3L of any beverage hot or cold, but you can also insert and 3L boxed wine pouch in it. This new Swankey is designed with a built-in cooler, so you can fill it up with a 6 pack of cans and all of your picnic items. It is essentially your everyday bag with a stealthy cooler attached all while adding a stylish pop of color to your outfit and making life much easier.

You can bring the Swankey Tote bag with you to all kinds of events, filling it up with water for hot days, mixed drinks for festivals, or cold brew for busy moms on the go.

Much like the PortoVino, The Swankey Tote is your everyday bag but unlike your average everyday bag, it has a secret, zippered, and insulated compartment for the wine pouch that is separate from the actual bag. The Swankey’s compartment is designed like its own cooler and is big enough to store the 3-liter capacity beverage pouch that is included with each tote, or you can easily replace it with any of the smaller 750ml or 1.5L beverage pouches that PortoVino offers and have extra room for any snacks you’d like to keep cool. The Swankey can dub as a cooler for anything you would like to keep cold or hot. The value is unbeatable, and just like the rest of the PortoVino Wine purse collections, the Swankey Tote also includes a flap that covers the pouring spouts, as well as interior pockets that can hold your phone, keys, and your mask while you take a quick sip.

Not only will you now be able to choose whether you want a more formal leather purse or a fun and colorful one with an assortment of different patterns to choose from, but you will also be able to choose by capacity. Portovino allows you to choose between 1 bottle or 2 bottle pouches, and now with the amount of space in the Swankey Tote you’ll have enough wine to provide for all of your friends. Whether you decide to utilize the function of taking your wine on the go or using them as your favorite fashion accessory for everyday use, you will always create a buzz, so pick your poison and be ready to be everyone’s official favorite friend.

About PortoVino

The PortoVino purse, which notably stores and pours up to 2 bottles of wine from a secret insulated compartment, is making fast strides in the fashion industry. Since their 2017 launch, their collection has more than tripled with fashion accessories ranging from their classic vegan leather wine bags to their trendy messenger bags, to their insanely popular Double Pour Tuscany totes. There is truly something available for everyone’s personal style esthetic.

PortoVino is also socially conscious, and since 2016 has partnered with Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) organization. FMSC is a Christian based non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food to people in developing nations. Since 1987, it has reached out to more than 70 countries. For every PortoVino purse purchased, one meal is donated to Feed My Starving Children.

Vintage Eve Circa Jan 2018: Call it What Happy Hour Really Is…A Precursor For Dining in Our Old Age (With new photo of courtyard at Salt Creek Grille!)

July 14, 2020 by evebushman

I was at one of my regular Happy Hour haunts, The Social in Newhall, when I noticed that the bar was completely packed at 5pm, much like it is at Olive Terrace Bar and Grill and Salt Creek Grille when we venture over to the other side of the valley and Le Chene when we want to go even further.

And then I noticed that the people that were packing these bars weren’t 20 somethings…not even 30 somethings…they were people that have “cultivated” their palates for a couple of decades longer than that.

There are lots of great Happy Hours all over Awesometown and we used to do a round-up of their menus annually just to share what they offer. (The last one is our 2016 version you can read here.) The four that I mentioned just happen to be the ones we have been going to of late…at least the past 10 years or so.

So why do we prefer these bars over others? They aren’t particularly loud or noisy, have comfortable seating and, as drinking at 5pm is a precursor to dining at 6 or 7, it seems to work for our seasoned age group.

Of the Happy Hours we go to – the ones that specifically were full very early in the evening – they also offer small bites for free or nominal prices, and some larger plates culled from the main menu. The libations extend from beer and wine to excellently crafted cocktails; one even doesn’t offer any kind of price deal on the drinks at all, just a Happy Hour menu of food. (And that one just happens to be our favorite. Why? Well we can walk there – we’ve said this many times, and yet we never actually have walked there! It’s the neighborhood bar and we often run into people we know. The owner gives us a welcome hug, maybe a peck on the cheek, and we know some of the servers and bartenders. Maybe at a certain age we just like to feel welcome…)

So, as we dined on dishes from appetizers to pastas we noticed how nice it is to dine early, have a well-made cocktail, linger a bit, then go home and…be asleep by 9pm. (And well on our way before the young’uns took over the bars.) However many younger people do go out to Happy Hour – when we were younger these were places with deep discounts, we could get a little rowdy with pals and we would end up staying for dinner as well. (Many were/are family friendly – we weren’t really hip on the idea of bringing our daughter to a bar or winery, but to each his own.) Back in the day that meant the party was to be found at places like TGI Fridays and El Torito. (The latter, if you stayed long enough even offered dancing in the bar. Anyone else remember the Discos of SCV? LOL.)

I feel like the next step for us will be the early bird dinners at iHop, and no cocktail at all…? I hope not. I do know that older friends of mine have pulled back from wine club memberships – at least from wines that are meant to sit in our cellars for 10 years or more – because my pals in their 70s are buying more splits (half bottles), trying to drink through what they already do have and/or are looking for wine brokers to sell their wines to. They do go out…or at least join us for wine on the porch sometimes!

Life is an every changing highway.

I’m hoping by the time we start dining at 4pm we’ll be in a place like Atria assisted living, where my mother has happily camped for nearly a year now, and be having cocktails by 2pm and up to two glasses of wine with dinner…now that doesn’t sound too bad does it?

What We’re Drinking During Coronavirus

April 17, 2020 by evebushman

Haven’t written about this yet, but it would appear that the subject won’t wait. Over the last few weeks, and possibly many more to come, our new normal has been to stay at home as it’s safer at home. While we’ve been making a small dent in our wine cellar, and an even bigger dent in our liquor cabinet, it’s made me wonder what others are doing. So I reached out to pals on social media to find out what they’ve been enjoying at home now more than ever before. (Note: Those of my friends in the industry are noted as such.)

Me, drinking and social distancing.

Joe W. “Much like you, I’ve gotten a lot of wine samples sent for review. Rose and sparkling have been personal preferences. Keep it light during these heavy times. Somehow focusing on making a variety of appetizers to eat instead of bigger meals.” (Industry)

Elana H. “We have been putting a dent in our wine cellar and liquor cabinet as well! Margaritas w/fresh squeezed Meyer lemons, Grand Marnier and tequila over ice with a salted rim. Then wine with dinner. Had a delicious 2014 Terra De Promissio Vineyard Pinot Noir from Whetstone Wine Cellars last night. During the day we have been sending out our wines to people all over the country and hosting tastings through Zoom. https://prioritywinepass.com/prime-solum-napa-valley-virtual-wine-tasting/

Michelene L. “Southern sweet tea and I have no idea why.”

Brenda R., “All the wine and spirit stores in PA have been closed since March 16. Thank God for CA wineries. Ordered some (and they) came in two days. Will have to order more.

Judi L. “Consciously unboozing limiting to, at the most, a glass of wine (whatever’s around) or one cocktail or a shot of mezcal/whiskey/rye. Oh yeah…beer…I love booze but actually not a big drinker. I’m an excellent sniffer and sipper.” (Industry)

Nelson L. “Sales and cheap shipping.”

Michael D. “We went through some great whites early on from Williams Selyem and Guy Farge that paired really well with the cheeses that we got from Lucques. Late night has been about Armagnac and Angel’s Envy Rye. I’ve also recently bottled a Brut IPA and am getting ready to brew a Belgian Tripel…(drinking) a wee bit more (than usual).

Karen B. “Finishing up the last of my 2018 Rosés to make room for the 2019s. Paul Lato 2018 in my glass right now! I was buying at cost, so helluva deal. I’m actually drinking less because we’re open just 3 days a week now and there is no social drinking or tasting with friends.” (Industry)

Nancy F. “I’m either vodka with sparkling soda, gin or vodka martini, or Negroni which are delicious and way too easy to drink! Or it’s wine. Like to switch it out as a I love all. However, the last 2 nights I started out with a fresh orange and lime juice margarita on the rocks with a salt rim…(And you may not have known that) I was a bartender for many years.

Taylor K. “Sales from local restaurants!”

Rick P. “This could be our only salvation; people are drinking all stockpiled wine. Hopefully we will see a buying surge when it’s all over. Otherwise say goodbye to a lot of small wineries.” (Industry)

Jennifer S., “Small dent in the wine cellar and a VERY large dent in the liquor cabinet. Need more scotch, whiskey and vodka. Thank goodness the liquor store is essential.”

Annette S., “Making a definite dent in the wine cellar.” (Industry)

Michael F. “Wine… Wine… & Oh Yeah; WINE! Along with some craft beers and a few fine spirits!” (Industry)

Dan C. “Old Fashioned!”

For me: Local deals from local and Paso wineries including Byron Blatty, Parhelion Cellars, Hoi Polloi, Pagter Brothers, Opolo, Thacher Winery, Hammersky…deals on wine and cocktails-to-go from The Press Room, Egg Plantation, Wolf Creek Brewery and Restaurant, Route 66 Classic Grill, Salt Creek Grille, Dario’s…Zoom tastings with our Napa friends…curbside pick-ups, free shipping and one dollar shipping incentives also. It’s all good during a very trying time.

Vinotemp VinCave Underground Wine Cellar Honored among 30 Most Innovative Products for 2020

March 16, 2020 by evebushman

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. (PRWEB) – Vinotemp®, the leading wine storage solutions and appliance provider, today announced the VinCave™ Wine Cellar 200 has been recognized as one of Meredith Corporation’s Beautiful Kitchens & Baths magazine’s 30 Most Innovative Products for 2020. Selected by the editors of the Luxury Home Design Group, the products featured in the coveted list were chosen for their ability to combine clever function, sophisticated style, and cutting-edge technology—the VinCave was selected for its unique, modular design and ability to efficiently cellar up to 200 bottles of wine underground.

“The smartest products are the ones that make the most sense for the way we live, work, and entertain in our homes,” says Samantha Hart, Executive Editor, Luxury Home Design Group. “Our winning products simplify tasks and deliver beauty and functionality where it’s needed most.”

Engineered to utilize the cooler, consistent temperatures found underground to properly cellar over sixteen cases of wine without coolants and without sacrificing floor space, the stainless-steel VinCave Wine Cellar 200 features a walk-over glass covering and a push-button elevation function which raises the wine collection above ground for easy access. This environmentally-friendly, efficiently-engineered design requires the cellar be installed on a flat floor surface at either ground or basement level.

“It’s an honor to be recognized among the 30 Most Innovative Products for 2020 because it highlights Vinotemp’s commitment to offering products that enhance the design aesthetic and functionality of wine storage,” states India Hynes, CEO of Vinotemp. “From cellar capacity to technology and visual aesthetics, we are dedicated to pushing the envelope in wine storage design and the VinCave Wine Cellar 200 is a perfect example of this.”

The 30 Most Innovative Products for 2020 will be featured in the spring issue of Beautiful Kitchens & Baths magazine and in the summer issue of Traditional Home magazine.
