Canada’s finest whisky is distilled by one of the country’s smallest distilleries

March 14, 2023 by evebushman

VICTORIA, BC, /CNW/ – Results of the 2023 Canadian Whisky Awards were announced at the Victoria Whisky Festival in Victoria, B.C. For the first time in the thirteen-year history of the awards, a regional, artisan producer has taken the top spot.

Following a blind tasting by a panel of nine whisky experts, Palm Trees & A Tropical Breeze, distilled by North Vancouver’s Sons of Vancouver Distillery was named Canadian Whisky of the Year, Artisan Producers.

A sweet, fruity whisky, described as spicy, flaming marshmallows, Palm Trees & A Tropical Breeze also took home overall Canadian Whisky of Year, and All-Rye Whisky of the Year.

Pendleton Directors Reserve, a lush, succulent, chest-warming beauty, was awarded Canadian Whisky of the Year, Large Producers. Pendleton, which specializes in blending whiskies that are distilled in Canada, also walked away with Blended Whisky of the Year and Ultra-Premium Whisky of the Year, Multi-Market.

“The industry has come a long way in the last few years, and it’s reflected in both the calibre of submissions and the range of expressions,” says Davin de Kergommeaux, chair of the judging panel and author of Canadian Whisky: The New Portable Expert. “In addition to their strong core range of whiskies, distilleries are producing small batches and limited releases, offering an amazing variety of regional profiles. The world has noticed and so has Canadian whisky’s global fan base.”

Other major winners include Crown Royal, Reifel Rye, Two Brewers, Lot No. 40, DEVINE Distillery, and Last Straw Distillery, making a near even split of awards earned by Canada’s largest and artisan distillers.

A list of all medals and awards is available at: https://canadianwhiskyawards.com/

The Canadian Whisky Awards, held annually since 2010, recognize the very best Canadian whiskies and encourage distillers to maintain the highest quality standards. To qualify, the whisky must be distilled and matured in Canada. The whiskies are evaluated and scored in blind tasting by an independent panel of whisky exports. The Canadian Whisky Awards are fully independent of the Canadian whisky industry.

5StarWines – the Book, helping Italian producers reach a global audience

August 16, 2022 by evebushman

VERONA, ITALY (PRWEB) – The sixth edition of 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls took place from April 1st to 3rd, in the days preceding Vinitaly 2022, the prominent wine trade fair in Verona, Italy. The wine selection event consists of three days of blind tasting, where an international jury of wine experts evaluates the participating wines, assigning a score to each wine, using a 100-point scale.

The wines that obtain a score of 90 or higher are published every year in the official guide 5StarWines – the Book. The guidebook is an important marketing tool that can be consulted online in digital format and is distributed in paper format at the main industry trade fairs, B2B meetings, tastings and masterclasses. The goal of 5StarWines is to provide constant promotional opportunities to the selected wineries, projecting them on the international wine stage. The Digital Catalog provides an opportunity to be introduced to 10,000+ top buyers of the Vinitaly Community, 200+ selected journalists, 290 Wine Ambassadors of the Vinitaly International Academy, 100+ international judges, and wine experts, as well as key influencers from all over the world.

The guidebook aims to put the selected companies directly in contact with professionals across the wine industry, an important opportunity for smaller wineries that struggle to approach international markets. A paperback copy of the guidebook is sent to all the selected producers, along with a set of stickers displaying their official score and a personalized diploma, providing producers with all the resources they need to self-promote at the main trade events.

The 2023 edition of 5StarWines – the Book is currently being finalised and will be published shortly. In the meantime, the list of selected wines is available on the event’s official website (https://www.5starwines.it/?lang=en). The list is divided into two sections, 5StarWines and Wine Without Walls (dedicated to certified organic, biodynamic wine or produced by companies adhering to sustainability protocols/certifications).

This year more than 2,300 wines took part in the selection, of which 960 will be published in the book (651 for the 5StarWines category and 309 for Wine Without Walls). As Bernard Burtschy (one of the six General Chairs) explained: “By the number of wines presented and their variety, the 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls selection is a first-class observatory of mostly Italian wines providing an in-depth check-up on the Italian wine industry. There are very few places to indulge in a real psychoanalysis of Italian wine as intensive as 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls”.

The inclusion of wines in the book is only one of several promotional activities reserved for the selected wineries and their products. In fact, while awaiting official publication, the wines are promoted on various social media channels (@5StarWines is present on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn). Two social media posts are dedicated to every single wine selected. In the first, the photo of the bottle is presented with additional information about the producer (including region of production, email or social media address and score obtained). In the second post, the tasting note composed by the international jury is shown. These posts are designed to be easily shared, not least on the company’s own channels.

The selection also includes the awarding of special Trophies to wines and companies that achieved a particularly distinguished score in their category. 5StarWines – the Book, in collaboration with the Italian Wine Podcast, has carried out interviews dedicated to the Trophy winners. During the interviews, producers have a further opportunity to talk about their products and current and future projects. The Italian Wine Podcast, launched in 2017 and is now rapidly approaching 3 million listens, and is a well-known resource among wine professionals and wine lovers all over the world.

A series of interviews with Trophy winners, published every Tuesday on the Italian Wine Podcast, is available online on major podcast platforms (Soundcloud, Spotify, Apple Podcast, …) and are collated in the series “Wine, Food and Travel with Marc Millon” (available at: https://soundcloud.com/italianwinepodcast/sets/food-wine-travel-with-marc).

The interviews released so far include:

  • Ep. 917 Luigi Gagliardini of Moncaro | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon;
  • Ep. 926 Giovanni Brumat of Cantina Toblino | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon;
  • Ep. 935 Alberto Pezzuoli of Azienda Agricola Pezzuoli| Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon;
  • Ep. 950 Elisa Centanni of Vini Centanni | Wine Food & Travel With Marc Millon;
  • Ep. 962 Andrea Milese of Ferrowine | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon.

Sicilia DOC Consortium Announces Sommelier Contest

July 28, 2022 by evebushman

NEW YORK (PRWEB) The Sicilia DOC Consortium recently opened registration for US wine professionals to its first Sommelier Competition. Applicants will need to pass a three-step selection process testing their knowledge of Sicilia DOC wines and indigenous Sicilian varietals as well as their presentation skills. Three finalists will be flown to Sicily in October to compete during Taormina Gourmet for the title, “Sicilian Wine Maestro.”

“We’re excited to engage the critically important Somm audience with our first Sommelier Competition,” says Antonio Rallo, president of the Sicilia DOC Consortium. “Our wines are gaining recognition for their quality and the great value they offer in addition to finding new and expanded distribution. This is a great moment for Sicilian wines in the US.”

Sicilian wines are growing in popularity in the US and increasingly appearing on wine lists of fine dining American restaurants. New generations of winemakers in Sicily are embracing the usage of local grape varieties, working with the island’s diverse terroir and making wine with an organic approach (Sicily has more hectares of organic vineyards than any region in Italy), resulting in growing interest from critics and consumers alike. Since its establishment in 2011, the Sicilia DOC Consortium has worked to strengthen the reputation of Sicilian wines, improving quality, sustainability and market position. The Sicilia DOC Sommelier Competition, culminating in the Finale at Taormina Gourmet (October 22-24, 2022), is the most recent marketing innovation for the Consortium.

Sommeliers and other wine professionals who compete for the ‘Sicilian WIne Maestro’ title will have to prove knowledge of Sicily’s rich history and culture, as well as an understanding of how the island’s viticulture and winemaking are being reshaped by new generations of winemakers.

A judging panel including Sicilia DOC Ambassador Jeffrey Porter, Vinitaly International Managing Director Stevie Kim and award-winning sommelier Tonya Pitts, will evaluate the Instagram submissions. Jeff Porter will lead a virtual webinar on Siciian wines and administer the exam part of the Competition.

The Finals will take place at Taormina Gourmet, one of the leading culinary events in Italy, hosted in the beautiful and historical city of Taormina. The Sicilia DOC Consortium will fly the three finalists to Sicily to compete in a blind tasting and a creative pairing challenge. A panel of Sicilian wine experts will evaluate each finalist’s performance and will crown the first ever “Sicilian Wine Maestro”.

For more information, visit the Wines of Sicilia DOC website or follow Wines of Sicilia DOC on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
