From Wine Judge Rick Fraga: 2016 SF Chronicle Wine Comp, Part Two

February 27, 2016 by evebushman

If you noticed, my favorites were distinctly different than the selected winners, though some of the winners were my second or third choices. (Editor’s Note: Part One ran on this blog on 2/20/16.) It was impressive to see the variety and quality of the best of class entries into the Sweepstakes level of the competition, especially when noticing the price points of the sweepstakes winning wines. The panel I worked with, Bob Ecker and Dick Mercer, were tasked with some fun and interesting wines.

We evaluated Chardonnays $10.00-$13.99 and Other Red Varietals on Tuesday. Tasted through Merlot $31-$34.99 and Barbera $20 and above on Wednesday. Then we finished with Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio over $20 and Petite Sirah $33 and above on Thursday. The afternoons were tough days working our way through young and big bodied red wines, but we were all up for it as our panel all were fans of both Barbera and Petite Sirah.

Myjudgespanel

The first two nights of the competition were highlighted by Judges Dinners. The first on Tuesday night was hosted by Bob Fraser, the co-executive director of the competition. Due to the extreme weather it had to be relocated from his home to the Events Hall on the Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds. Even with the move it was an evening of good wine, good food, great company, a bit of blues harmonica and a few Sven and Ollie jokes (courtesy of Kent Rosenblum).

On Wednesday evening the Judges and Competition staff were hosted by the Wilson Family of Artisan Wines at their Mazzocco Winery Facility just outside of Healdsburg, CA. It was an evening of wine from each of the Wilson family of Wineries. This included Mazzocco, Wilson, Matrix, Soda Rock, DeLorimier, Pezzi King, Saint Anne’s Crossing and Jaxon Keyes. The meal was delicious, featuring Short Ribs and Polenta as the featured entree. A great time was had by all and the Wilson family along with the Mazzocco Winemaker, Antoine Favero, were gracious hosts.

The final evening, Thursday night, which is normally a free night for the judges to enjoy local area dinning in Sonoma County, had a new twist. One of our own Judges, Sue Straight (the Winewench as she is known to many) entertained many of her peers by performing with Manzanita Moon, a local area band that she fronts as a vocalist and harmonica player. The band played for a couple of hours at Ruth McGowan’s, a local brew pub in Cloverdale with dancing and general revelry being the evening’s theme.

The week was topped off on Friday morning with the Sweepstakes judging, whose results are listed earlier. There were over 50 judges participating with an audience to observe the finish to 4 days of extensive wine evaluation. It was a great week, as it has been for me for the previous 5 years as a judge.

The great part of this competition is that all of the results are publicly available at the competition’s website winejudging.com. On the site you can find all of the award and medal winners for the competition.

Once again I wish you all the best, as usual I believe, “Life is Too Short to Drink Bad Wine”. Have a Happy and prosperous 2016 and enjoy life! Cheers!

SUN KING BREWERY CELEBRATES 6th ANNIVERSARY with JAMESTOWN REVIVAL

June 4, 2015 by evebushman

Indianapolis, Ind. – Six years ago when Sun King Brewing Company began crafting Fresh•Local•Beer at the corner of Market Street and College Avenue hardly anyone noticed. Today the brewery has grown to become the second largest brewery in Indiana and is excited to announce their 6th Anniversary Party on Saturday, June 27th, 2015 at the brewery (135 N. College Ave., Indianapolis, Ind. 46202).

indexSKB VI will feature live music, Indy’s best food trucks, a great line up of limited release beers on tap, plus the release of our most anticipated seasonal beer Grapefruit Jungle I.P.A.

“Grapefruit Jungle makes the kids crazy, just like Rock and Roll.” said Sun King Owner/Head Brewer Dave Colt, “GFJ was designed as a tribute to the birth of rock and roll and features three distinct hops to mirror the three notes necessary to make a chord, which also happens to create an intense depth of flavor.”

The fun starts at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday June 27th in Sun King’s south parking lot. Indy’s own DJ Helicon setting the mood for the day and warming up the stage for Beech Grove native Brandon Whyde & The Devil’s Keep, who will be opening for San Diego’s dirty blues duo Little Hurricane.  The headliner for the evening’s festivities will be Austin, Texas based band Jamestown Revival playing their self described ‘Indie Rock with a Southern slant.’

Grapefruit Jungle (GFJ) is a classic American I.P.A. that was devised by head brewer Dave Colt and showcases hops from the Pacific Northwest to create an intense citrus hop flavor explosion that is reminiscent of biting into a fresh grapefruit.  For the third year in a row, GFJ will be released in its very own 16 oz. can, as well as on draft throughout central Indiana.

Tickets are available online (http://tinyurl.com/SKBVIParty) or at Sun King Brewery.  $15 tickets will be available June 1st – June 26th.  Day of show tickets will be $20.  The event will take place in the south parking lot of Sun King from 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM (EST).  Event is for patrons 21 and over.

Vine 2 Wine Classic Introduces Barley 2 Beer on August 16, 2014 At CALARTS

August 6, 2014 by evebushman

Where else to grab a beer than the Vine 2 Wine Classic! Did I just read that right, you ask? Beer at a wine event?  You absolutely read that correctly. In the past, Circle of Hope’s Vine 2 Wine Classic has had a beer garden, which started out with 3 beers in 2011, then 6 beers in 2012. Last year, the 2013’s Vine 2 Wine Classic brought out 12 different beers to taste in the Moe Hafizi Beer Garden at CALARTS, which was a great success, and one we didn’t think we could top!  Well, 2014 Circle of Hope Inc. and the Vine 2 Wine Classic committee is introducing our Barley 2 Brew section that will join our amazing Vine 2 Wine wineries in the main gallery, again at CALARTS this year. Here you will find 30 different Craft Brews, which will offer 60 plus different tastings for your pleasure, encompassing 60 feet of beer bliss. We are very excited to team up with Simon & Shannon Mee, owners of the Newhall Refinery Gastro Pub and the Egg Plantation, to provide us with a great line up of beers to taste. Here is a list of who will be there as of this article release:

Do you prefer an American Pale Ale like Stone Pale Ale or a Robust Porter like Deschutes Black Butte, or does your taste lie somewhere in between?  If you’d like to learn more about the many styles of craft beer being produced this is a great opportunity to sample a vast variety of beers and decide for yourself. If you’re a beer aficionado you won’t want to miss this event. The Vine 2 Wine Classic is August 16th at CALARTS from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m.

One low price gets you unlimited tastings of hundreds of amazing wines and beers.  If that’s not enough, we’ll have wonderful tastings of signature foods from our local restaurants and caters.  Those of you with a sweet tooth – have no fear; our great bakeries and confectioneries will have something very special for you.

Local crooner Jimmy Carnelli and his band will be providing the entertainment again this year. If you want to work off some of your food or libations, you can cut a rug on the Vine 2 Wine Classic dance floor!

If you haven’t attended the Circle of Hopes Vine 2 Wine Classic, you don’t want to miss it this year. Several guests from last year commented that they had no idea how large this event was.

Come out and spend the evening with us, you will have a great evening inside CALARTS in the Main Gallery.  Tell your friends about it!

Come for the Wines! Come for the Craft Beer!  Come for the Culinary Delights! Come for the Entertainment!

Buy your tickets today at www.vine2wineclassic.com

Remember, 100% of the money raised stays in SCV!
