Union des Grands Crus Bordeaux 2022 Tasting Event: The New 2019 Vintage

July 22, 2022 by evebushman

Not sure how many of the “130 Castles in the Union” of Bordeaux Eddie and I tasted at the Union des Grands Crus Bordeaux 2022 tasting event, but taste we did! We go to this preview of newly released Bordeaux wines every year – we missed a couple as everyone did when events went on hiatus through Covid – so we were thrilled to attend this latest event.

The preview event we attended was filled with sommeliers, journalists, and restaurant and wine shop owners – as it has been in the past – so it was nice to reconnect with many of my peers after such a “dry spell”. We were also blessed with seeing some of the same winery representatives across the table we hadn’t seen in a while – and some Chateau owners too! Again, as it’s been a couple of years, everyone just seemed so relieved to finally meet again over fine wine that came across the ocean to be shared. (The evening’s event, open to the public, would be filled with wine lovers, aficionados and collectors.)

Appellations represented include Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Pauillac, Sauternes and Barsac, Pessac-Leognan, Graves, Pomerol, Listrac-Medoc, Moulis-en-Medoc, Haut-Medoc, Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estephe. There was enough wine to fill two rooms of excited tasters.

You can see the story in my public photos here or read on. We appreciated everything we sampled! In general, I felt that many of the 2019s were good to drink now and didn’t necessarily require a lot of aging, the blends were well done, there was a buzz about the Merlots and the Cab-based Bordeaux from Pauillac.

Again, and just in general, some of the reds were dark, tannic and brooding while others were fresh and lively which to me means there was a lot to appreciate no matter what blends you normally lean towards.

The whites – Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauternes that I enjoyed – benefitted from great fresh fruit and winemaking skills. I enjoyed almost every single one I sampled.

Though we didn’t come close to tasting everything, we would recommend that you seek out these stellar 2019: Chateau Lynch Bages, Chateau Phelan Segur, Chateau de Chantegrive, Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot, Chateau Leoville Barton, Chateau Leoville Poyferre, Chateau Gloria, Chateau Fonreaud, Chateau Dauzac, Chateau Talbot, Chateau Rauzan Gassies, Chateau Croizet Bages, Chateau Prieure Lichine, Chateau Gazin, Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Chateau Pavie Macquin, Chateau Clinet, Chateau La Tour Figeac, Chateau Grand Mayne, Chateau Pape-Clement, Chateau Latour-Martillac, Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse, Domaine de Chevalier, Chateau Haut-Bergey, Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron, Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Chateau Larrivet Haut Brion, Chateau Bouscaut, Chateau Clos Haut-Peyraguey, Chateau Doisy Daene and Chateau Sigalas-Rabaud.

Ember Restaurant at We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort Receives Wine Spectator “Best of Award of Excellence” for 2021

August 14, 2021 by evebushman

FORT MCDOWELL, Ariz. /PRNewswire/ — Today, the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort is thrilled to announce that Ember, its fine dining restaurant, has received Wine Spectator‘s esteemed “Best of Award of Excellence.”  The honor recognizes recipients that offer extensive selections with excellent breadth across multiple regions and significant vertical depth, and Ember is now one of 19 restaurants (out of nearly 9,000) in Arizona – and one of approximately 1,000 around the world – to receive this award.

This is the second time that the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation has been lauded by this highly regarded industry publication.  In 2006, the Ahnala Mesquite Room received the “Award of Excellence,” recognizing the restaurant’s wine list that featured a well-chosen assortment of quality producers along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style.  The fact that the tribal nation has now been granted two Wine Spectator awards for excellence – an achievement rare among tribal casinos – affirms their commitment to delivering an exceptional culinary experience.

“American restaurants are back in business, as patrons are eagerly returning to dining rooms across the nation,” said Marvin R. Shanken, Editor and Publisher, Wine Spectator. “In this year’s Restaurant Awards issue, we reflect on how restaurateurs navigated this incredibly difficult period, and look ahead, with every indication that the coming year will be one of the most promising in decades for an industry we all love. It’s been a long road back, and it feels wonderful to celebrate restaurants and all they bring to the world of wine.”

“The ‘Best of Award of Excellence’ really belongs to our advanced sommelier Dennis Payne, whose 31 years of experience and painstaking efforts over the past year have resulted in this impeccable award-winning wine list,” added Zac Gallo, Executive Director of Food and Beverage for the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort.  “Not only has Dennis cultivated an extensive  wine and spirit program, but he ensures the proper care, storage and handling of our collection to maximize our guests’ dining experiences.”

Ember’s wine program covers seventeen countries, focusing on each country’s top wine-producing regions and most highly acclaimed vineyards.  It includes 517 wines by the bottle and 26 wines by the glass – ranging from a strong California presence to Barbaresco, Rioja, New Zealand, Argentina and Germany – along with 30 Dessert Wines from across the globe as well as 15 Ports and Madeiras.

In addition, Ember has a special page in their 37-page wine list titled “The Century Club,” dedicated to the world’s top 100-point wines.  Curated for fine wine collectors, this list contains 32 critically acclaimed wines spanning more than two decades that have scored a perfect 100 points.

Wine Spectator began its program to recognize the world’s best wine lists in 1981. There are three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence and the Grand Award—with 1,673; 1,141; and 103 winners this year in each respective category.

All award winners will be featured in Wine Spectator‘s special 40th Anniversary Restaurant Awards issue, available to readers today.

Acker Partners With United Sommeliers Foundation To Help Sommeliers Affected By Restaurant Closures

May 17, 2020 by evebushman

NEW YORK (PRWEB) – Acker Wines has announced its formal partnership with the United Sommeliers Foundation, (USF), in an effort to support wine professionals affected by the crisis. Acker will be accepting auction consignments of wine and spirits to directly benefit the USF program, which provides financial assistance to sommeliers who have been furloughed as a result of widespread restaurant closures. Acker will donate a portion of its proceeds from each lot sold on behalf of United Sommeliers Foundation to the cause.

“We are very pleased to be working with the United Sommeliers Foundation, helping give back to the sommelier community that has been so good to us over the decades that we’ve spent hosting wine events in many cities worldwide,” said Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “We hope collectors will reach into their cellars, even for just a few bottles, to benefit the sommeliers who help us, in business and in pleasure, during the regular course of our lives. So much of our business is done in the great restaurants of the world, and so we will be accepting consignments to benefit their grant program, assisting wine professionals whose livelihoods have been affected by this ongoing global health crisis. We look forward to doing our part to support efforts like these, and to return to their restaurants to share a glass together soon.

The Tenth Annual Universal Whisky Experience – From the Founder Mahesh Patel – Why Whisky and Why Vegas

January 30, 2020 by evebushman

Welcome to the World’s Premier Luxury Whisky and Spirits! Experience www.universalwhiskyexperience.com

Universal Whisky Experience is about providing the connoisseur, collector, enthusiast and premium spirits consumer, the most exclusive, luxurious and intimate whisky and spirits enjoyment at an elite luxury resort in the world capital of entertainment. Showcasing some of the finest and rarest premium whiskies from a top tier of brands.

Our 10 Year Anniversary, The Nth 2020, will be hosted at the Wynn Las Vegas on April 24-April 25, 2020. Save the date now!

About Mahesh Patel, Why Whisky and Why Vegas for the 10th Anniversary Event

Mahesh Patel founder of Universal Whisky Experience, Avid Connoisseur and Whisky Collector, made history when buying the world’s first most expensive whisky bottle ‘The Dalmore Trinitas’ valued at $165,000 back in October 2010. Since then he has been made keeper of the Quaich – a society at the heart of the Scottish whisky industry and became the Freeman of City of London and livery man for the worship company of distillers for his contribution in the whisky industry and has been featured in many television interviews talking about his passion for whisky since his teen years, and making his dream come to life with the launch of Universal Whisky Experience seven years ago (now ten years ago!) and its first super tasting event (The Nth – Ultimate Whisky Experience) in Las Vegas.

I decided to do the show because no one did an event that I wanted to attend. I did a show that I would attend and other fellow high end connoisseurs/collectors would want. So the show was built really for me.

Since the launch of Universal Whisky Experience, Mahesh Patel with his pioneering ability and vision has gone on to create the world’s best Whisky experiences internationally and locally opening and tasting some of the world’s most expensive whiskies granting exclusive access in the world of whisky.

Why Whisky: I was 14 when we went on a family vacation to Scotland and my father liked whisky so we visited Glenfiddich distillery (it was only distillery that was doing tours back in the 80s). I have always been technical minded so I was fascinated by the technical side of whisky production. This was my introduction to whisky; soon after I started to collect miniature bottles from different distilleries, and when I got to university I started tasting whisky. After graduating and then traveling for work and vacations, I started buying whiskies from Duty Free shops. They have some of the best and limited expressions and that’s where my collection got serious.

Why Las Vegas: Because it is the world capital of entertainment. I wanted to host an event, but more than an event – an experience. I wanted connoisseurs to be able to bring their non-whisky drinking partners along and experience the event and to be in a city that offered everything. The Wynn is the most luxurious resort in Vegas and has the best customer experience than any other hotel. All its restaurants are award winning and the service is impeccable.

The Nth Ultimate Experience is a once in a lifetime event for many. This is the only event in the world where you get to sample the most premium, rare, unique and expensive whiskies from all the major houses around the world. Mahesh has fostered an amazing network with all top whisky makers and brands. Leveraging this amazing network and relationships has led to this one of a kind event, the Nth Universal Whisky Experience.

Scotland: How Was The Scotch Whisky Experience?

October 26, 2018 by evebushman

When in Scotland you do the Scotch whisky, right? For whisky 101ers that means blended or single malt Scotch whisky – not rum or bourbon or rye or any other whisky (or whiskey) you can think of that is made in any other way in any other country. Yes, you can call them all whiskey, but only blended or single malt made in Scotland is to be called Scotch whisky. Though at press time there are some distilleries, in Japan and the U.S. I think, that are fighting to use the spelling whisky over whiskey. But, I digress. Let me get to the point.

In our whisky “barrel” and getting ready for a wild ride!

We were in Scotland for a little over a week. We started in Edinburgh and had a three-day trip planned to tour distilleries in the Highlands and Speyside, two well known whisky making areas.

But, again I digress. The best way to start you own whisky journey in Edinburgh is at The Scotch Whisky Experience, a beautifully architected building at the base of the infamous Edinburgh Castle and at the top of the Royal Mile.

Why start here? Because you will feel – and be – a lot more educated in every pub, bar and liquor store in Scotland (and anywhere else you shop for whisky) if you know a little about what you like and don’t like in a whisky.

So, not to digress again, lets get started. Make a reservation for your one-hour trip – or longer if you want to linger over a dram, aka ounce, or two. It begins with an amusement park ride with a ghost narrator giving you a wee lesson in how whisky is made, then you get to view a large panoramic film experience that will give you a lay of the different whisky-producing areas and what their each distinctive shaped still pots and water source gives to the whisky – and a real yearning to visit.

Next we learned how a blended whisky starts with grain alcohol and the master distiller then selects different single malt whiskies from different areas to create the perfect blend.

There was a moment, a hesitation, when those single malt fans, like myself, paused and thought, heck that master distiller is doing an incredible job. We need to give blends more credit! Single malt Scotch whisky wasn’t as popular as Irish whiskey until the master distillers created blends.

Then comes an easily understandable interactive lesson about the different aroma profiles of each area: Highland, Speyside, Lowland, Islay and Campbeltown. We were getting a true “sense of Scotland.” And we’re not done. Based on the different aromas explained, each guest is given a scratch n’ sniff card to match with the corresponding aromas – from nuts to dried fruit to spice to cigar and so on. Learning about the specific aroma profiles and then immediately scratching the corresponding spot on the card made it an easy lesson for all to grasp.

Based on what you liked in those aromas you are then prompted to select the type of whisky that would appeal to you. Then your guide (we had the awesome Heather that has been with them 12 years and writes a fine blog on their website too) will pour your taste. But then…

…you are invited into the final mind blowing room. The largest collection of whisky in the world. Tips on how to smell, taste and evaluate your dram while in the center of this room is a killer experience. As we sampled our whisky, the group – after having been on a ride and in three different rooms – quieted. While the collection may have begun with a private donation of five bottles, we learned, it now was unparalleled in existence. I asked about the oldest bottles and discovered two: from 1897 and 1904. The amount of evaporation in one amounted to at least one third of the bottle, and it had never been opened.

We learned that some of our takeaways were exactly what the creators of The Whisky Experience were looking for: more respect for blended whisky, appreciation of the different whisky-producing areas – the experience is meant to “springboard” consumers into distillery visitors – and finally, to learn and enjoy from private tastings. One last thing they have for us and another reason to return: a training school.

We ended our tour with a visit through another tasting area, more like a bar with whisky flights and/or by the dram purchases, rare bottles for purchase and a nice little gift shop.

Now, we were more than ready for our three-day whisky tour. Except we still had trouble pronouncing the words “Slainte Mhath” that many say as they drink their drams!

Zachys Wine Auctions Stuns in $7,884,529 and 99% sold Season Opener

April 6, 2017 by evebushman

White Plains, NY (PRWEB) – Zachys two-day auction on March 9 & 10 held in conjunction with La Paulée de New York realized $7,884,529 and was 99 percent sold, smashing pre-sale expectations. Held during NYC’s “Burgundy Week,” the auction was the most-attended Zachys auction ever with well over 150 friends, bidders, consignors, and Burgundian winemakers in the room at Le Bernardin Privé. All in all, an astonishing 833 lots of the 1925 on offer realized prices at or above the high estimate. Only 30 of the 1925 lots failed to find a buyer.

10462801_647699331992810_1445433728582060343_nThe big winner of the auction was Burgundy with the top 26 prices realized in the auction. A 1990 DRC Assortment was the top lot of the auction at $49,000 against a pre-auction estimate of $38,000-$55,000. Next was two magnums of the exceedingly rare 1988 Roumier Bonnes Mares VV, which realized $44,100 against presale estimates of $24,000-36,000. All told, DRC accounted for 16 of the top 25 wines in the auction, proving once again that DRC is the king of the hill at a Zachys auction.

For many collectors, the highlight of the auction was Treasures From the Legendary Collection of Robert Caine, which realized $1,674,820 against a pre-auction estimate of $950,750-$1,448,250, or 16% above the high estimate. 62 lots from the most famous white Burgundy producer, Coche-Dury, realized 28 percent above the high estimate. The two biggest winners in the Coche-Dury section were full 12-bottle cases of 1992 and 1996 Meursault-Perrières, each of which realized $39,200 against pre-auction estimates of $18,000-$28,000.

After the auction, Dr. Caine commented, “I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results of the auction last week. Everything about the sale—from the gorgeous catalog and photography to the beautiful venue of Le Bernardin, combined to produce spectacular results. My past consignments have done very well but, in this sale, Zachys exceeded my expectations. I’ve been collecting Burgundy for over 30 years, and Coche-Dury has always been a personal favorite. I am truly delighted that Zachys’ clientele appreciates the rarity and excellence in winemaking represented by this collection, and bid accordingly!”

Jeff Zacharia, President of Zachys, continued the sentiment and said, “It would be impossible to be more excited about the results of our ‘kick off’ auction in New York—especially as we head into the spring season. We look forward to partnering with La Paulée de New York or San Francisco every year, and this year was no exception. Burgundy ruled the week—in our auction as well as in our glasses—and taken in conjunction with our February Hong Kong sale, we’re delighted to report that we’re in the midst of a Burgundy upswing as we head into the heart of the spring season. A special thanks to Rob Caine for entrusting us with such a special collection.”

Please join Zachys at Smith & Wollensky on April 29 for a Bordeaux-Only Auction in Celebration of Burdigala. Email auction [at[ zachys [dot] com to reserve your seat today.
