The Vail Wine Classic Returns August 11-13

The three-day wine destination event of the summer showcases the best wines from around the world to provide an immersive tasting experience that is unparalleled. Best of Fest (Friday, August 12)
Raise a glass at the Best of Fest as the sun sets over Vail Valley. New to the Classic this year is an intimate event from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Vail Nordic Club (1775 Sunburst Dr. Vail, CO. 81657) that includes carefully selected gems from exclusive portfolios for you to sip, swirl, and savor. Only 90+ point ratings, reserve bottles, and higher price points will make the cut in this unique tasting opportunity where chefs have prepared a menu of small plates with suggested pairings to perfectly compliment your wine collection.
The Best of Fest ($195) ticket allows you to enjoy a curated selection of reserve bottles at the Classic. This all-inclusive access features a tapas style pairing and incredible views of Vail Valley.
The Grand Tasting (Friday and Saturday, August 12 and 13)
Located at Vail Athletic Field (646 Vail Valley Drive, Vail, CO 81657), The Grand Tasting is the crown jewel of the Vail Wine Classic, featuring a diverse and distinctive showcase of wines from around the world. Saunter through an extravagant mountainside tasting while exploring everything from fruit-forward Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Grigios, to rich Cabernets and Zinfandels. In addition to an impressive, curated selection of domestic and international wines, the Grand Tasting has handcrafted cocktails and local beer. Your all-inclusive ticket includes a full size wine glass for you to take home, small bites, and live music at the event.
The Grand Tasting sessions and ticket types include:
  • Premier Access (starting at $169) from 2-5:30 p.m. Premier Access tickets allow you to be the first to enter the event and imbibe with a limited number of other enthusiasts. Enjoy the first sips of wine and an extra hour at the Classic. 
  • Early Access (starting at $139) from 2:30- 5:30 p.m. Early Access tickets allow you to get ahead of the tasting and enter the Classic before the crowd. Select the perfect table by the band with this limited capacity ticket. 
  • General Admission (starting at $119) from 3-5:30 p.m. This all-inclusive ticket allows you to imbibe in two and half hours of mountainside wine sampling during the Grand Tasting event.

America’s Best Wine Festival Returns to Sonoma with 40+ Garagiste Winemakers April 30th

California Wine Festival Announces New 2022 Event Dates

Santa Barbara, CA — California Wine Festival is pleased to announce the 2022 schedule of signature oceanfront tasting events. Celebrating its 20th year, each festival commemorates the vast offerings from winemaking regions across California, paired with gourmet food selections from local dining purveyors, with live entertainment and sweeping coastal views.

Each two-day event commences with a Friday evening “Sunset Rare & Reserve Tasting”, an intimate experience for dedicated wine lovers. Kicking off with a sparkling wine reception, the evening features samplings of hard-to-find trophy wines and offers tasting room exclusives and limited-production wines hailing from vineyards based in Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, Temecula and more. Top regional chefs will serve delicious hot and cold appetizers to pair with the world-class wines. Each “Sunset Rare & Reserve Tasting” overlooks picturesque waterfront landscapes.

The second day boasts a “Beachside Wine Festival”, a sun-splashed daytime event facilitating culinary education and exploration through one-on-one conversations and tastings with culinary and wine talent hailing from California’s top wineries and local restaurants. Vinos Zanzonico 2020 Reserva Chardonnay and 2019 Reserva Syrah!

If you’ve been following my reviews for any length of time you know that I started sharing my wine notes well over ten years ago, about the same time I first met winemaker Gerard Zanzonico at Napa’s Del Dotto. We’ve shared many wonderful wines of Gerard’s over the years, and when he finally retired to Baja California, and began making wines there, I knew I would (virtually for now) follow him there.

To see any past reviews just do a Google search of Zanzonico + Bushman and there will be plenty. Proud of my longstanding relationship with one of the finest winemakers I’ve had the pleasure to know, I’m happy to share my the latest: reviews of Gerard’s new 2020 Reserva Chardonnay and 2019 Reserva Syrah from Baja.

Regards to my notes: whenever possible I don’t look at tasting notes that are provided by a winemaker or winery staff. Then, for fun, I look at them afterward to see if they are similar. I did that here, and any similarities in my notes are in bold.

2020 Reserva Chardonnay

13.7% alcohol

EB: Dark gold in color with a sparkly edge, quite welcoming. On the nose I detected fleshy yellow peach, honeydew and cantaloupe melon, delicate white flower and pebbles washed with the sea. Erupting flavors tingled my palate: dried apple, melon again, lemon zest, creamy salty cheese, butter…and the wine continued to tingle my tongue for a long lasting finish. And the wine made me crave a cheese plate. 92 Eve points.

From Winemaker Gerard Zanzonico

2020 Chardonnay -100% varietal, grown in the San Vicente Valley, 85 cases produced. 12 months in French Oak, 25% new. Brilliant color, pineapple aromas with hints of tropical fruits. Balanced finish.

2019 Reserva Syrah

13.9% alcohol

EB: Plum jam, stewed dark fruit, dark chocolate, grilled mushroom, black peppercorn, smoldering rich tobacco, espresso and freshly turned earth on the nose followed by flavors of dried blue to black fruit, a lively and spicy palate, chocolate-covered espresso beans, a full mouthfeel and gripping tannins giving way to a big crescendo of a finish. 95+ Eve Points.

2019 Syrah – 100% varietal, grown in the La Grulla Valley,141 cases produced. Mature fruit, plum and chocolate aromas…a hint of mushroom. Smooth tannins with a balanced finish.

Garagiste Wine Festival Returns to Solvang: February 25th and 26th

‘Southern Exposure,’ which follows on the heels of a sold-out Garagiste Festival in Paso Robles last November, will again be held at Solvang’s historic Mission-style Veterans’ Memorial Hall. The event features a wide diversity of grape varieties vinified into over 150 different wines and unique blends, offering wine lovers one-of-a-kind opportunities to taste a range of the year’s most exciting, handcrafted small-lot production wines all under one roof.

“We are thrilled to return to Solvang after a three year absence. While the pandemic may have prevented us from gathering, it did not prevent these extraordinary winemakers from crafting their fantastic wines, and we cannot wait to showcase them next month in-person to our very appreciative and enthusiastic attendees,” said Garagiste Festival Co-founder Douglas Minnick.

The Garagiste Festival, which premiered in Paso Robles in 2011, is the nation’s first and only festival to showcase the wines of micro-production commercial ‘garagiste*’ winemakers, and was named “Best of the Fests” by Fest Forums and the ‘Best Wine Festival in the US by USA Today. It expanded to the Santa Ynez Valley in 2013 to highlight the wines of Santa Barbara County and surrounding AVAs, as well as small production wineries from across California. It has been a consistent sell-out ever since.

This year’s Garagiste Festival ‘Southern Exposure’ includes its Friday night signature “No Repeats, Rare & Reserve” event, and Saturday’s Grand Tasting, which includes a Silent Auction filled with first-rate wine packages that benefit The Garagiste Festival Scholarship Fund at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Minnick noted that in an effort to promote a more open flow and greater social distancing within the venue, for this year, there will be no VIP Seminar as in the past, with that space used to include as many wineries as possible, while still giving everyone safe and ample space to share their wines.

Three Areas to Discover from “Taste the Difference”

Alella, a small wine district in the north eastern part of Spain centers around the village of the same name just a few miles from the eastern edge of Barcelona. Alella, one of the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula, dates back to the period of the ancient Romans and occupies an area of about 230 hectares in the Maresme and Valles Oriental counties. Alella’s climate is broadly Mediterranean with noticeable variations between vineyard sites due to the orography of the terrain. The economy in the region has been traditionally based on agriculture and shipping, of particular note, viticulture and floriculture account for more than half the production within these sectors.

Winemaking emerged in the Allela area with the Romans in the 1st century AD and was sufficiently acknowledged by AD 77. However, the Romans brought more than just wine to the area, establishing roads to connect their various provinces. During the middle ages the wines of Allela’s region were favored at the Barcelona Cathedral and later became one of the highest quality wines exported to overseas colonies.

The majority of wines emerging from this region are crisp, dry, floral scented whites made from the local grape varieties including Xarel-lo, referred to as Pansa Blanca locally, Garnacha Blanca, Viura, and French varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Red and rose wines throughout the region are primarily produced with Garnacha Negra as well as Monastrell, Syrah, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Tempranillo. Vines in this region are planted at altitudes anywhere from 195ft (60m) to 800ft (250m) above sea level with older vines growing freely while newer vineyards have been planted on trellises. Alella wines, more than any other, are ingrained in the tradition of the Barcelona table, mainly the reborn and restless Barcelona, that have laid the foundation of today’s great region.

Cava: The 2021 vintage will be remembered as the first in which wineries can mention on the labels where it is that the grapes are grown, since new zones and sub-zones approved by the Designation of Origin Regulatory Council came into force. These new regulations mark out three defined production areas: Comtats de Barcelona, Valle del Ebro and Viñedos de Almendralejo, along with seven sub-zones: Valls d’Anoia-Foix, Conca del Gaià, Serra de Mar, Serra de Prades, Pla de Ponent, Alto Ebro and Valle del Cierzo. To guarantee traceability, a new software platform has been set up for this campaign, as part of the digital transformation currently taking place within this Protected Designation of Origin.

The terroir-driven attempt aims to shape the perception of Cava as a wine with a multitude of territorial interpretations: a complex sparkling wine that deserves a year-long attention. This happens in a moment when the US market has become more receptive to the category of sparklings as wines suitable for everyday consumption, and not only reserved for special occasions or holidays celebrations.

A series of events run in the US these past months, including Taste The Difference Grand Tasting taking place on December 9th in New York City, have helped convey this message to trade, press and consumers. Additional tastings have focused on the new regulation to convey both grape sourcing information and minimum ageing time. The new rules establish a distinction between Cava de Guarda, which indicates wines aged for minimum 9 months on the lees, and Cava de Guarda Superior, applicable only to wines aged on the lees for at least 18 months and including under its umbrella the Reserva, Gran Reserva and Cava de Paraje Calificado. The ageing time for the Cava Reserva has also been extended from 15 to 18 months whereas the 30 months ageing requirements for Gran Reserva (30 month)and the 36 months Cava de Paraje Calificado remain unchanged.

In order to achieve this objective, the TTD.EU program will organize wine seminars, workshops and b2b meetings both in these countries and in Spain and Italy, inviting wine professionals to join study trips to Europe. The program, realized in the span of three years (2021-2023) aims at creating awareness about European quality wines, in particular Italian and Spanish, which share a long tradition and a high standard of quality.

With SRPs ranging from $34.99 – $99.99/750mL, the Portfolio is distributed by Winebow, a national leading distributor of fine wine and spirits, and is currently available for sale in fifteen states: NY, NJ, CT, PA, DC, DE, MD, SC, GA, FL, IL, WI, MN, CA, and WA.

The wine crowd will love them; they are fabulous on their own, and they make incredible cocktails, too.”

The first shipment of the Shochu Portfolio features distilleries that honor Japan’s process of koji fermentation, a tradition that has been used to make shochu, sake, miso, and other umami-driven Japanese specialties for more than 1,200 years. These small, family-run distilleries use traditional methods to create layered, aromatic, flavorful shochu. This first shipment includes shochu made from rice, barley, sweet potato, and kokuto sugar (a traditional dark sugar from the southern islands of Japan).

The Portfolio currently offers three product lines:

The Obi Collection – Named for the traditional silk kimono belt, this collection debuts with five shochu made in Kyushu by female producers. Three of the expressions come from Furusawa Distillery, a 5th generation-owned distillery established in 1892 and overseen by master brewer-distiller and distillery president Ms. Masako Furusawa since 2007:

  • Motoko (35% ABV); SRP: $48.99/750mL – This 100% rice shochu is distilled at normal atmospheric pressure to heighten its aromas, and then aged more than 8 years in ceramic pots and enamel tanks.
  • Masako (35% ABV); SRP: $46.99/750mL – This atmospheric distilled 100% barley shochu was aged for more than 11 years, including time spent in ceramic pots and enamel tanks.
  • Mahoko (35% ABV); SRP: $64.99/750mL – This atmospheric distilled sweet potato shochu was aged for more than 16 years, including time spent in ceramic pots and enamel tanks. This was made by Masako’s father to celebrate the birth of his granddaughter, Mahoko.

The two other expressions from the Obi Collection are from Nishihira Distillery on Amami Island. Established in 1927, the distillery makes ceramic pot fermented kokuto sugar shochu under the watch of master brewer-distiller Ms. Serena Nishihira, who is also a professional musician:

  • Selephant (30% ABV); SRP $59.99/750mL: With a name inspired by Serena’s childhood nickname, the label of this export-only shochu features a photograph of her own hand to symbolize shochu’s handmade nature.
  • Kana (30% ABV); SRP $67.99/750mL: Aged in oak for at least 1 year, this shochu is named after Kana, wife of Saigo Takamori, Japan’s last true samurai.

The Honkaku Harvest Reserve Collection exclusively features distilleries that either grow their own produce or work with local farmers to assure the highest quality ingredients. Like wine, the shochu featured in the collection are vintage dated. Poised for future growth, this portfolio currently features two shochu from Yachiyoden Distillery. Based in Japan’s Tarumizu region on the east side of the Sakurajima volcano, the distillery takes advantage of the area’s famous soil to grow the sweet potatoes used to make:

  • Crio “Frozen Moon” 2020 (25% ABV); SRP: $99.99/750mL: This shochu is made exclusively with hand-harvested, site-grown sweet potatoes that have been frozen, resulting in a sweeter shochu expression. This expression is extremely limited even in Japan, where it is often sold at auction on the secondary market.
  • Tsurushi “Floating Moon” 2020 (25% ABV); SRP: $99.99/750mL: This shochu exclusively features hand-harvested, site-grown sweet potatoes hung to dry in the distillery rafters prior to fermentation. Like Crio, this extremely limited expression is often sold at auction on the secondary market in Japan.

The “C&S Select” Collection will comprise many shochu. The first shipment includes two selections. The first is from Shoro Distillery; established in 1928, the distillery’s current master brewer-distiller — Mr. Hiroaki Yano — uses forward-thinking products and packaging to defy expectations commonly built around traditional shochu.

  • Colorful (30% ABV); SRP: $54.99/750mL: A collaboration between Hiroaki and another of his master brewer-distillers, Mr. Koji Okayama, this is a blend of two distillates made three years apart (2016 and 2019) from locally grown sweet potatoes, with a Thai rice starter fermentation.

The second expression in the “C&S Select” Collection comes from Tensei Distillery. Established in 1901, this distillery uses the softest strike water in Kyushu to make their shochu, resulting in rounded, mouthwatering spirits.

  • Mugi Hokka (25% ABV); SRP: $34.99/750mL: This shochu is made with 100% heirloom Schooner barley. Eight percent of the barley is roasted, a process that gives the shochu distinct notes of coffee and dark chocolate.
