In July of 2014 I wrote an article from this prompt: describe a day in your life. I perused the original article and was reminded of my past. Here is an excerpt:
I’ve been writing, can you believe this, before I started drinking. (You thought I was going to say walking?) Anyway, I wrote under the column header Eve of Destruction (while poking fun) and Another Face of Eve (when doing good) before I settled on using Eve’s Wine 101…I met a lot of local people running non-profits, politicians for hire, business owners…you get the drift. When the newspaper asked me to write about wine, I found that most of the people I had met, well, seemed to have an interest in wine as well. And what’s more, they wanted to perch themselves on my glass, follow my wine adventures, and, basically, get thoroughly loose through me.
As it’s now been ten years, I wondered how different a day in my life now looks, especially as we have moved to Las Vegas where there have worked out to be more wine and spirit-themed events for me to write about. I still wake up at about 5 am from habit, return emails, and check in on social media. I still write a weekly column for Eve’s Wine 101, columns for Elite Magazine, and now freelance for the City Lifestyle publications in Las Vegas.
The move to Las Vegas has made things change a bit for me professionally. I’ll start with meeting Vashti and Steve Roebuck – wine people I only knew from social media, who run several popular Facebook groups and have their own wine website – who opened their arms to us when we first arrived. From the Roebucks we’ve had the opportunity to meet many sommeliers, wine lovers, be introduced to their favorite restaurants, and join them for international travel to visit wineries. Hats off to them for being ambassadors to the wine scene for us in Las Vegas.
As far as writing opportunities, there have been plenty! I have somehow gotten on the local PR radar and been thrilled to cover many new openings of bars and restaurants. I’ve been able to go to many more conventions than ever before, supported new local favorites in my social media and articles, been offered attendance to many special events, and was invited to travel by private jet to a winery in Washington state.
We settled into the Spanish Trail community – a private golf course and country club with housing, we chose for the 24/7 guards and gated environment – with the bonus of being less than 15 minutes from the strip. It has turned out to be a great choice to live. Many of the residents we’ve met have also opened up their welcoming arms to us like the Roebucks. We’ve attended parties, wine pairings, wine dinners, cocktail events at the country club, and our immediate neighbors have helped us navigate our new homes. Like a cruise ship, many of us enjoy just “socializing at home” with home being within our gated community. We always have the option to walk home after enjoying alcoholic beverages with our neighbors!
On the horizon: we will be covering the Kentucky Bourbon Festival again this September, meetings with our Drammers whisky club, Universal Whisky on Wheels in November, Napa Valley also in November and then a slew of conventions that focus on the bar scene and innovations in food begin early 2025! As I like to say in my social media #EveBushmanWhatsInYourGlass and #EveBushmanWhatsOnYourPlate – it looks like both will be full for as long as I desire! And as many of my friends from home love to visit Las Vegas, we’ve seen some more now than ever before!
