Tasting Six Valdobbiadene Prosecco!

January 21, 2022 by evebushman

Who likes sparkling wine? The ultimate wine for celebration, and celebrated as a wine that can go with any food, when I was offered six bottles of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco (the Glera grape) Superiore D.O.C.G. – a very affordable and reasonably low-alcohol sparkling wine from Italy – I said yes! This is how it went:

  1. Col Del Forno

My notes: Poured into a Champagne flute and I see nothing but bubbles racing to the top for a few minutes. Always exciting. Noted a color of pale hay. Aromas of toasted biscuit crackers, white peach, grapefruit, lemon-lime, and a nice hefty slice of banana cream pie. On the mouth it was all fresh bright citrus fruit, unsalted butter, fine mineral water, limeade and pink grapefruit. A shame to waste in a cocktail, in my opinion, I enjoyed this sipper before dinner quite well.

From Andreola.eu: Col Del Forno is a Valdobbiadene DOCG with exclusive characteristics drawn from soil with layers of clay, sand, pebbles and conglomerates formed by Karst phenomena over 100,000 years ago, prior to the last ice age. 100% Glera grapes.

  1. Canevel Brut

My Notes: Also poured into a Champagne flute and I noted a bit larger bubbles and less of them than the Col Del Frono – nothing wrong with that, just an observation – and a pale gold color. Aromas that reminded me of white flowers, cheddar cheese, wet pebbles, white peach, fresh yellow corn, talcum powder and kiwi. The taste made me think of carbonated lemon soda, fruit cocktail, cling peaches with a fresh and delicate finish that just made me want to have more.

From Canevel.it: Sparkling wine with a lively mousse and fresh aromas of fruit and flowers. Delicate but firm on the palate with good acidity and long-lasting aromas that are reminiscent of the nose. 100% Glera grapes, 11% alcohol.

  1. Casa Farive Extra Dry

My notes: This time I used a wine glass, which is sometimes thought better to evaluate aroma and flavor over a Champagne flute. (The bubbles however can’t get as “excited” running up the wider glass.) Also of note is the bottle shape, as you can see in the photos it is shorter and wider, which would make it hard to cellar but Proseccos don’t need to be aged in my opinion. Now, onto the aromas, this time I got green apple, lemon zest, fresh honeydew melon, a light cream and ocean mist. Going in for a taste and I was rewarded with a lively mouthfeel of the freshest and juiciest of chilled fruits, a bit sweeter than the first two. bracing but mild acidity and a pat of butter on the finish. Another great aperitif to enjoy before dinner.

From Cantinevedova.com: This Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG wine, made exclusively from Glera grapes, is perfect to cheer up your aperitifs, with its fresh, soft taste, on a savory and harmonious finish. 11% alcohol.

  1. Col Del Lupo Dry – Deligo

My Notes: Back to a regular wine glass I noticed both small and larger bubbles working their way to the top, not as many and over quickly, but that may be due to the vessel I chose. Dried apple slices, pineapple, cream, buttered toast, some salinity and vanilla bean on the nose; and bruised fruit, apples, pears in syrup, sweet pink grapefruit and a little of that salinity I found on the nose all on the mouth. Interesting differences – other than the salinity – between the aroma and flavors made this one something to linger over.

From Coldellupo.it: “Dry” sparkling wine produced using the Martinotti method. 100% Glera, high hill vineyards between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Organically farmed. 11.5% Alcohol.

  1. Graziano Merotto Brut

My Notes: This one I drank with a friend, hers in a Pinot Glass (as she would soon switch over to her favorite red) and mine in a Bordeaux glass. She knew I was taking notes at her first sip commented, “Very bubbly, it tickled me” that I just had to share. From me I found it very pale in color, between light and gold hay. Aromas wafted up from my glass included kiwi, vanilla milkshake, cheddar cheez-it crackers and my friend noted yeast. While we tasted, alongside prosciutto wrapped mozzarella cheese, I noted red Delicious apple, green stems, malted milk and a medium acidity. While this one was a Brut, and the others dry or extra dry, it was quite sweet.

From Merotto.it: Production area: Col San Martino, 100% Glera, 11.5% alcohol.

  1. La Farra Extra Dry

My notes: Observed just oodles of fast moving tiny bubbles racing in my Champagne glass. The color was close to a pale gold with notes of a sweet powdery perfume, caramel apple, crisp sea air and a little bit of orange slices on the nose. This was my last Prosecco to review so I lingered over the tasting and found fresh tart berry fruit, pineapple chunks, lime soda and a long finish. Wholly enjoyable.

From Lafarra.it: From a “Cru” of grapes located on the hills of Farra di Soligo. Harvest is by hand, stainless steel vats, Charmat method.

About
Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G., is the flagship wine of the Veneto region in Italy, and it is most representative of the high elevation winegrowing area, having always been synonymous with the start of the meal as an aperitif, and now foodies are discovering its versatility throughout the meal.

While Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G. wines tend to be priced slightly higher than traditional Prosecco, the wines are still immensely affordable given the quality, making them desirable for a range of consumers.  Their versatility and lower alcohol by volume are also in keeping with today’s trends towards lighter alcohol and more diverse cuisines being enjoyed at the American table.

PARTY is a natural extension of what I already do,” says Vera Wang. “Why prosecco? CELEBRATION! “This project involved input from my friends, family, even clients. A sort of family affair!”

To craft the prosecco Vera Wang looked to find a winemaker with both heritage and pedigree. She turned to the top winemaking region Piemonte, known for its sparkling wines, and to Araldica, producer of the best-selling Moscato in America. Led by second-generation winemaker Claudio Manera, it is one of Italy’s fastest-growing producers and most forward-thinking winemaking co-operative. Manera continues his father’s commitment to Italy’s winemaking traditions, preserving local varieties, protecting the environment and valuing the characteristics of each wine.

“At Araldica we celebrate our roots, land and people, balancing our drive for innovation with respect to tradition,” explains Manera. “Vera Wang has our same philosophy, making this collaboration organic for us. This wine speaks to her fresh perspective, taste, passion and dedication to crafting a premium prosecco.”

Retailed at $25, Vera Wang PARTY is crafted from 100% Glera grapes and boasts aromas of apple and stone fruit, citrus notes and fresh acidity on the palate, with a soft and fruity finish. This new prosecco offers a fresh perspective in the sparkling wine category with its crisp effervescence, coupled with a bold aesthetic and playful voice. Josh Cellars Launches New Prosecco Rosé

May 5, 2021 by evebushman

STAMFORD, Conn. /PRNewswire/ — Josh Cellars is giving us a new reason to celebrate: Prosecco Rosé. America’s most popular premium ($10+) wine brand is among the first to market with Italy’s newest approved sparkling varietal.

Josh Cellars is among the first to market with Italy’s newest approved sparkling varietal: Prosecco Rosé.

“We all have reasons to toast those we love, maybe now more than ever,” says Joseph Carr, founder of Josh Cellars. “Our new Prosecco Rosé is a way to celebrate and express genuine gratitude for simple, everyday moments, together in person or virtually.”

Josh Cellars Prosecco Rosé has scents of fresh wild berry and blackberry, complemented by a refreshing acidity and effervescence. It is light bodied, pairing perfectly with seafood, cured meats, cheeses and classic brunch dishes like eggs Benedict.

Until last year, Prosecco Rosé was neither permitted nor even possible. Prosecco production is tightly controlled by Italian wine officials to ensure superior quality, making it similar to wines of the Champagne region. To clearly differentiate Prosecco Rosé from other bubbly selections, winemakers must follow specific guidelines related to sourcing and production.

All Prosecco is made in a specific region of northern Italy, with at least 85% Glera grapes. While many Americans may not recognize the name, Glera’s wine roots go back to the Roman Empire. Notably, Glera ripens later than some other grapes, providing a higher acidity ideal in sparkling wine.

Previously, Italy permitted winemakers to blend only white grapes to produce Prosecco. Last year, Italian wine officials changed the rules, allowing for up to 15% Pinot Noir, a red grape. Pinot Noir enables the production of outstanding sparkling wines and it is often used in some of the best white and rosé Champagnes.

“Prosecco Rosé is like a perfect marriage,” says Daniele Pozzi, a fourth-generation Italian winemaker. “Pinot Noir grapes bring warmth and depth to the relationship, making Prosecco even better in many ways.” In addition to flavor, Pinot Noir provides Prosecco Rosé its beautiful pink color.

Josh Cellars previously partnered with Pozzi on Josh Cellars Prosecco winemaking, which launched in 2019. In just a little more than a year, Josh Cellars Prosecco is now the fastest-growing and fourth-most-popular Prosecco in the United States. The Pozzi family now makes Josh Cellars Prosecco Rosé as well.

Josh Cellars Prosecco Rosé (MSRP $14.99) can be purchased directly at JoshCellars.com and through retailers nationwide.

Bushman and Perlis Review 5 Newly Released 2020 Rosés

April 30, 2021 by evebushman

Recently Michael Perlis and I were presented with a few new Rosé wines for review. We didn’t taste together so below you will see notes by either K&MP (Yes, Michael enlisted his wife Karen to help with the hard work) or EB. I will first share the tantalizing invitation, and below that are descriptions of the wines from the wineries followed by our own tasting notes:

Rosé season is finally upon us! We are excited to present our selection of newly released 2020 Rosés, which come in a beautiful spectrum of pink shades. While these are wonderful wines for year-round enjoyment, there’s just something special about sipping a glass of pink during the springtime, when the weather begins to feel warmer, flowers bloom and days start to lengthen.

Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rosé 2020 (750ml/$14.99): Jean-Luc Colombo is an estate built upon innovation, passion, and dedication to winemaking. From the stony, limestone vineyards nestled in the hills above the bay of Marseille near Provence comes Cape Bleue Rosé – a wine of pure elegance and freshness with pronounced raspberry aromas over a core of red fruit, classic watermelon and peach notes. An elegant mouthfeel, fluid and round with ample length and crisp finish. K&MP: Very intense with flavors of Gala apple and Anjou pear from the Mourvedre that wrap around the smokiness of the Syrah. We paired the wine with a roasted Pork Loin marinated in a ginger scallion sesame sauce with a few red pepper flakes thrown in. The wine was a great accompaniment. This was MP’s favorite – guess he’s a cheap date.

Côté Mas Aurore Rosé Pays d’Oc IGP 2020 (750ml/$13.99): Côté Mas Aurore Rosé captures the essence of its Mediterranean region’s charm, offering a rich and smooth palate full of cherry, strawberry and floral aromas evolving toward soft candied fruit notes. The palate is rich and smooth with ripe red fruits and well-balanced acidity. Enjoy as an aperitif or pair with grilled chicken, shrimp, and goat cheese salads. EB: I’ll admit I chose this wine to review as the label design attracted me: a couple from the past – he wore an old fashioned straw hat – sitting for some wine with the vineyard in the background, all painted with pastel pinks, blue, yellow and green. The color of the wine itself, a pastel pink, coordinated perfectly. Now, to smell, I got aromas of cherry blossoms, fresh cut watermelon, lemon and lime zest, dried berries and wet stones; for the flavor there was welcoming crisp apple, juicy red fruit, and a mild to medium acidity which gave away to a nice length. We enjoyed this as recommended, as an aperitif. 50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and 10% Vermentino. I would buy this wine.

Valdo Prosecco DOC Rosé 2020 (750ml/$15.99): One of the must-try wines from the newly approved category designation, Prosecco DOC Rosé, Marca Oro has a lovely pink hue and persistent perlage. On the nose, inviting floral notes lead to apple, pear, and small red berries. The palate is delicate, fruity, pleasantly harmonious with a long finish. This is perfect as an aperitif, and it pairs perfectly with pasta, fish, and tartare. EB: The color, of a perfectly ripe peach, and oodles of dancing bubbles definitely drew me in, including the three Prosecco lovers that shared this bottle with me. On the nose there was a wealth of raspberry, strawberry, toasted French baguette, wet river rock and white flower – all very enticing. One guest commented on the taste that the bubbly was fruit forward, as I got with more than a hint of ripe raspberry, bright strawberry, a feeling of general freshness, a nice low acidity, and that same raspberry from the nose to the taste lingered through to the finish. Pinot Noir and Glera grapes. My guests took photos of the wine in the hopes of finding it. I would also like to find this wine again.

Bertani Bertarose 2020 (750ml/$19.99): Bertarose is one of the oldest wines of the Bertani winery, and a blend of 75% Molinara and 25% Merlot grapes. Fresh aromas of pomegranate and red currants with notes of white flowers. Decisive on the palate, medium bodied with deft balance between acidity and tanginess. Excellent length. Perfect as an aperitif, it also goes well with salads, delicate-flavored pasta dishes and white meat. K&MP: Very clean nose and finish. Nice smooth mouthfeel as well. We got some citrus/lemon notes as well as pear. This wine was very refreshing yet full bodied enough to stand up to the mini-Reubens that we paired it with. They’ve been making this wine since the 1930s and they definitely know what they are doing. Very interesting blend as well as the approach of fermenting the Molinara on the skins and the Merlot off the skins. Makes for a pretty complex wine, which is not unexpected for a winery credited with creating the first commercial dry Amarone.

Planeta Sicilia DOC Rosé 2020 (750ml/$19.99): A blend of 50% Nero d’Avola and 50% Syrah, this fresh, fruit-forward rosé represents all the feelings of a Sicilian summer. The fresh aromas of strawberry make it a marvelously friendly wine, and easy to drink. Enjoy Planeta Rosé in good company, as an aperitif with tapas, raw fish, fresh salads or alone with seasonal fruit. K&MP: Light in color and nose, which makes sense as the wine is vinified like a white wine. Fragrance of Jasmine tea leaves. Seemed to bounce off the palate with its brightness. We paired this with a margarita pizza that we had added smoked salmon to and it matched perfectly. This would be great on a late summer California afternoon/evening with passed appetizers.

Introducing Corvezzo: New from Italy Organically Grown, Vegan Wines from the Veneto

April 12, 2021 by evebushman

MIAMI (PRWEB) – Corvezzo makes its U.S. debut with three wines: a Pinot Grigio 2019 delle Venezie DOC, a Prosecco DOC Treviso Extra Dry, and a Prosecco DOC Rosé Extra Dry Millesimato. Available nationwide, all three are line-priced, with an SRP of $13.00.

Corvezzo family photo from Social Vignerons website.

“Giovanni Corvezzo and his family farm 380 acres – large enough to be a reliable supplier, small enough for that hands-on, quality touch. This is in keeping with our philosophy at Origins Organic, which is to deliver excellent quality organically grown wines at an affordable price.” — Labid Ameri, Co-owner, Origins Organic Imports

Founded in 1960 and based in the village of Cessalto near Treviso, Corvezzo was awarded organic certification in 2017. Transition to 100% organically farmed vineyards began under third-generation owner/winemaker Giovanni Corvezzo, soon after he took over at the helm in 2009. According to Corvezzo, who describes his winery’s signature style as fresh and bright, organic farming ultimately results in thicker grape skins, leading to heightened aromas, greater balance, and superior quality wines.

Corvezzo Pinot Grigio 2019 delle Venezie DOC balances peach and tropical notes with a persistent minerality. The wine’s appealing roundness is due to the 5% aged in oak.

Corvezzo Prosecco DOC Treviso Extra Dry: Pear, green apple and acacia flowers distinguish this well-knit blend of 85% Glera, with 10% Chardonnay added for structure and 5% Pinot Bianco for greater elegance and aroma.

Corvezzo Prosecco DOC Rosé Extra Dry Millesimato: An exciting addition to this new category. Pinot Nero at 15% (the legal maximum) added to the Glera base gives the wine an intense flavor of wild strawberries and small red berries. Fresh and strong on the attack, flavors of acacia flowers and citrus linger in the long finish. To maintain freshness, the wine stays in tank only 60 days.

GRANTS PASS, ORE. (PRWEB) – A New Wine Category – Rosé Prosecco DOC. After many years of discussion, in May the Prosecco DOC Consortium in Italy approved the introduction of Rosé Prosecco DOC. Prosecco DOC Rosé Officially Approved To Begin Exporting Worldwide: The Much Anticipated Sparkling Wine To Arrive In The United States Imminently

December 6, 2020 by evebushman

NEW YORK (PRWEB) – The Consorzio Tutela Prosecco DOC announces that the Official Journal of the European Union C 362 October 28th, 2020 hearings for the approval of the Prosecco DOC Rosé have successfully concluded. This declaration confirms it is now possible for Prosecco DOC producers to export Prosecco DOC Rosé in foreign markets, including the United States, beginning immediately.

Approximately 20 million bottles of the 2019 Prosecco DOC Rosé were produced, with 15-20% distributed in Italy.

The balance has begun export to leading foreign markets, such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, East Asia, France, and the Nordic countries. There are between 40 and 50 million bottles of the 2020 vintage of Prosecco DOC Rosé in production and set to be released in January of 2021.

Prosecco Doc Rosé has been long awaited by the world’s leading wine markets. As a result of the anticipation and excitement surrounding the official release, a substantial amount of 2020 vintage has been sold “en primeur” (before the production of the wine was complete). Production regulations require secondary fermentation for at least 60 days before Prosecco DOC Rosé can be made available to consumers.

“Of the 486 million bottles of Prosecco DOC that are produced annually, approximately 80% are exported. Thanks to European recognition of Prosecco Rosé, we estimate that Prosecco DOC sales will be stimulated even more in the last quarter of 2020,” comments Stefano Zanette, Prosecco Consortium President. “I congratulate those producers who were ready to seize this opportunity, planning early so as not to be caught unprepared.”

In order to label Prosecco DOC as Rosé, producers will have to follow specific rules:

  • Grape varieties: Glera and 10%-15% Pinot Nero
  • Yields: 18 tons/hectare for Glera and 13.5 tons/hectare for Pinot Nero
  • Second fermentation – Martinotti/Charmat Method: minimum of 60 days; therefore, only the sparkling version is permitted. Still and Frizzante versions of the Rosé won’t be allowed
  • Sales authorized from the 1st of January after the harvest
  • Color: intense pink, bright, with a persistent foam
  • Residual sugar: from Brut Nature to Extra Dry, no sweet version of the Rosé will be allowed
  • “Millesimato” stated on the label along with the vintage (minimum of 85% of the grapes from the vintage year)

Luca Giavi, Director of the Prosecco DOC Consortium adds, “As a Consortium representing the entire Prosecco DOC production system, we thank the regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia; the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies; the General Directorate for Agriculture of the European Commission; and the MEPs (especially Paolo De Castro), who are all committed to helping people understand the great opportunity that comes with the Prosecco Rosé approval. This approval is especially critical now because of what Italy, Europe, and the whole world are experiencing.”

With the achievement of this milestone, the Prosecco DOC Consortium is already looking towards future growth. In the coming weeks, tests aimed to define the types of wine for extended secondary fermentation will occur for producers in the Trieste area. This opportunity further demonstrates the unlimited potential of the Prosecco region. The territory boasts 11,460 winegrowers, 1,192 wineries and 347 sparkling wine houses, all of whom are part of the complex system behind the success of the Prosecco Denomination of Origin (DOC), which has become a great flagship of the Italian ‘Genio’ (‘genius’) around the world.

Discovering Mionetto Prestige Prosecco with the Wine-y Women

April 10, 2020 by evebushman

Was sent several bottles, minis and 750ml, of  Mionetto Prosecco for review. As is my habit when I receive quite a few bottles at once I contact the Wine-y Women Unwind Meet-up group for sampling with me. The wines came with information on pricing and tasting notes. Will share the collective tasting notes from the group as well below.

From the Winery

Founded in 1887 by Francesco Mionetto in the small village of Valdobbiadene, Mionetto has an established reputation for quality, tradition and innovation. In the heart of the Prosecco region, Mionetto produces exceptional wines with consistent national and international acclaim.

Mionetto Extra Dry Organic

The Glera grapes for this wine are from a certified organic winery in the town of Vazzola in the hills of Treviso. The winery practices organic farming techniques and grows the grapes without synthetic chemicals and fertilizers. An explosion of green apple, pineapple and orange on the palate with a refreshing crispness from the delicate bubbles.

Group Notes: The color of pale hay. Aromas of apple, peach, toast, cheddar, mown grass and Starburst lime candy. In the mouth we got a mild acidity with lots of apple juice, peach, pear and some minerality. Most of the ladies that drink regularly chose this as their favorite.

Mionetto Prestige Brut ($14 750ml / $4 Mini 187ml)

Made from 100% Glera grapes from the province of Treviso, an area renowned for high quality Prosecco, this sparkling wine offers a luminous straw yellow hue and stylish mousse. The palate is marked by aromatic notes of honey and white peach. For the ever-lasting couple, you can’t beat this bottle of classic brut.

Group Notes: Light lemonade in color, with notes of peach syrup, pink grapefruit, bubble gum and wet stones. Flavors included lemon-lime hard candy, lemonade again and a little hint of cherry.

Mionetto Prestige Rosé Extra Dry ($14 750ml / $4 Mini 187ml)

This deeply luscious sparkling rosè is the result of soft pressing of red grapes. The wine offers a peach blossom luminosity, accompanied by a fine, lively perlage. This wine is known for its intense fragrances, like holding an edible bouquet of violets, raspberries, strawberries, and wildflowers.

Group Notes: Peachy salmon color, the group got Maraschino cherry, strawberry, Mandarin orange and lime on the nose followed by similar tastes on the mouth with the addition of dried cranberry and pomegranate. This was the crowd favorite.

Tastings: Zonin1821’s ‘Dress Code’ Prosecco – the Grey, the White and the Black and the Current Release Estate Blends from Murrieta’s Well

July 15, 2016 by evebushman

One of the most successful, family-owned winemaking companies in Italy, Zonin1821, has unveiled a decidedly different Prosecco line with its ‘Dress Code’ Collection. It strays away from what the family’s seven generations of winemakers have been producing since 1821 – Prosecco made from 100% Glera grapes.

Inspired to create a new concept of Prosecco, Zonin1821’s ‘Dress Code’ blends the Glera grape with a maximum of 15% of other varieties, since DOC regulations allow for that.

Each edition of the ‘Dress Code’ – the Grey, the White and the Black – is blended with a different grape varietal, creating a unique tasting profile and style for each.

Long before Napa and Sonoma wines garnered international acclaim, Livermore Valley was making the greatest wine in California. Recognizing the similarities between Livermore’s dry gravels and Bordeaux, pioneering winemakers planted cuttings from the famed Chateaux d’Yquem and Margaux to create unrivaled wines of place.

Though a few things have changed, some have stayed the same. Today, acclaimed winemaker Robbie Meyer leads the winemaking team at Murrieta’s Well by taking a small lot approach to growing grapes and making wine. With careful attention to the estate’s diverse microclimates, the vineyard’s unique grape varieties are advantageously planted and farmed so that each lot is a distinctive representation of where it was grown. In his thoughtful approach to blending, Meyer uses these lots to create wine blends that showcase the best of the estate each vintage.
