Tasting a Classic: Rodney Strong Vineyards

August 30, 2019 by evebushman

Do you know anything about Rodney Strong Vineyards? If you do recognize the name, as most would for the 50+ year-old Sonoma County winery, forgetaboutit for just a few more minutes while you read what I learned about their iconic label, as well as newer labels we tasted from: Symmetry Collection Red Meritage, Alexander Valley; Alexander’s Crown Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley; and Rowen Red Wine Blend, Cooley Ranch, Sonoma County; presented by Director of Winemaking Justin Seidenfeld and Director of Communications Christopher O’Gorman during a spectacular paired wine luncheon at Cafe Del Rey.

(If your appetite can’t bear waiting…see photos of the wine and winemaker Justin Seidenfeld click here, if you are after the food prepared by Sous Chef Jackie Ramsey that’s all here. I suggest a gander at both.)

What We Learned

  • The winery opened in 1959 and was the 13th bonded winery in Sonoma County. Beginning with producing an annual 30,000 cases they now make 860,000 cases.
  • Tom Klein and family purchased Rodney Strong in 1989.
  • Rodney “Rod” Strong was a former dancer turned winemaker. He was a leader in pushing Sonoma County wines and is considered a “pioneer in the industry”.
  • Seidenfeld, now on his 15th vintage for Rodney Strong, uses the vineyards and science to make great wines, as he “loves to make people happy.” He looks forward to taking Rodney Strong into the future.
  • Rodney Strong is “solar powered, certified sustainable, practice Fish Friendly Farming and Sonoma County’s first carbon neutral winery.”

The Menu and Wine Pairing – aromas and flavors separated by ;

Welcome: 2018 Rose of Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Estate Sonoma County.

Floral, pink grapefruit, fruit cocktail, wet pebbles, some mild and pleasant salinity; fresh fruit, pink lemonade, mild acid and some of the same fruit as found on the nose. Rodney Strong lovers will note a new white label, very artistic, to catch the eye. This is the third best-selling Rose over $15 in the U.S.

Starter: 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, Charlotte’s Home, Estate Sonoma County.

Fresh pear, white peach, with notes that reminded me of both a sandy beach and fresh mown grass; fresh citrus, low acid, balanced and a nice long finish. The “10% barrel fermented in French oak with completed malolactic” gave a nice creaminess to the wine, not what I expect from the usual highly acidic Sauvignon Blancs, so it was very welcoming. Nicely priced at about $17 and a new white label to catch the eye as well.

Pairing: Oyster, tuna tartar, preserved lemon aioli and cucumber mignonette. The oyster was to die for, and the slight creaminess in the wine was the perfect balance.

First Course: 2016 Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards Chardonnay.

Unsalted butter, toast, kiwi, earth and oak; butter again, hay, Meyer lemon. The 12 months in French Oak left its lovely buttery mark on this classic Rodney Strong label.

Pairing: Scallops, coconut sunchoke, pureed grilled peach, pea coulis, fried leeks. I noted that the scallops, amazing on their own, were more buttery with the Chard.

Second Course: 2016 Russian River Valley Estate Vineyards Pinot Noir.

Crushed cherries, stems, bramble, rose petal and stewed red fruit; richly layered, both peppery and velvety with bright red fruit.

Pairing: Chicken, roulade prosciutto spinach, sundried tomato, charred shallot and red wine jus. The chef had used a Pinot Noir in the red wine sauce that of course complemented the wine very well.

Third Course (two wines): 2015 Symmetry Red Meritage, Alexander Valley and MY WINE OF THE WEEK FOR SURE.

Blue to black fruit, cracked black pepper, incense and earth; great balance of fruit and spice, earthy, dark and brooding with an incredible length. This blend, 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec was great right now in my opinion. It came from five different Alexander Valley Vineyards and their estate on the hills north of Lake Sonoma: Cooley Ranch.

SECOND WINE: 2015 Alexander’s Crown, Cabernet Sauvignon, Single Vineyard, Sonoma County.

Blueberry, dark chocolate, dust and cigar; balanced mouthfeel, peppery, dark fruit, creamy, toasted oak. This was also an exceptional wine.

Pairing: Grilled lamb, Romesco, risotto, pickled ramp and pea mint gremolata. I chewed that bone until it was bare – so very good only made better by the Symmetry.

Final Course:

2015 Rowen, Red Wine, Sonoma County, Cooley Ranch.

Blackberry, blueberry, lots of plum, milk chocolate, rich wet soil; peppery, dry, big, juicy fruit and tannins to give it an incredibly long finish. This wine had been decanted, so now ready to drink. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Malbec, 17% Syrah and 2% Viognier. All Cooley Ranch – in my opinion, you should keep your eye on wines from this area.

Pairing: What a delight of hard-to-get award-winning cheeses we were presented with along with toasted nuts and fresh fruit. We thought we were done. Then came a chilled chocolate truffle served alongside a little jar of white creamy pudding with a rim of red fruit. Then we thought we were done again, only to be handed a small box containing a tart…for the road.

All of the wines I would definitely buy, the last three I will look for on wine lists and snatch up if I’m lucky enough to find. (Or you could join the wine club to get yours.) The restaurant I will definitely return to, the food is incredible and matched only by the service and incredible views of boats in the Marina.

Vintage Eve Circa 4/2016: Revisiting Four Brix Winery

April 16, 2019 by evebushman

We’ve run news from Ventura’s Four Brix Winery over the years (Baubles party, announcing the opening of the winery and different events I was able to snag a brief tasting at.) But it‘s been since May 2010 that I’ve sat down to taste and review their wines. Via my pal Cori Solomon of #LAWineWriters a media visit was recently arranged, and I got to rectify that.

Gary Stewart

From that 2010 article I will share that “…wine tasting became a focused passion for the three couples (that own Four Brix Winery)…(Gary) Stewart is mostly self-taught, adding classes from UC Davis, and was mentored by winemaker Ryan Horn at the Vintner’s Vault in Paso; the other couples offered years of palate experience. I then offered up my own palate to try the swanky labels he had for Deductive (Zinfandel and Petite Syrah), Rhondevous (Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache) and my personal favorite, Scosso (Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot).

Fast-forward to today, and from co-owner Karen Stewart (who is most often found in the tasting room), I learned:

  • They started out as garage winemakers.
  • The winery has 4,000 more square feet just added, perfect for their larger “Brix Head” events.
  • They recently added their first “estate-managed vineyard”, the Cani Amante Vineyard, in Ojai.
  • They don’t have a Chardonnay, but plenty of other whites to tantalize you.

New Tasting (Aromas and flavors separated by “;”)

2013 Smitten

100% Viognier

Camp 4 Vineyard, Santa Ynez

HELLO PINEAPPLE, then came pear, wet steel and pebbles; in the mouth was that same big pineapple flavor (someone maybe liked Hawaiian Pineapple wine when they made this one?), lemon-lime, concrete and white peach. 90 Eve pts.

2013 Desirous

100% Grenache Blanc

Camp 4 Vineyard, Santa Ynez

Jasmine, cantaloupe and honeydew melon, talcum powder, perfumy and fresh; on the mouth I got distinct canned fruit cocktail, medium acid and slight oak elements. 89 Eve pts.

2014 Dry Riesling

Cani Amante Vineyard in Ojai, Estate property.

I don’t get CA Riesling often so I was looking forward to this one. Dried peach, anise, white pepper; followed by peaches in light syrup, lemon, limeade with an encouragingly pleasant mouthfeel. 89 Eve pts.

2012 Meritage

64% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon

Paso Robles

Cigarette, red cherry, toast, jam and vanilla; dried cherry, black currant, cigar, oak, dark, strong tannins. 89 Eve pts.

2011 Temptress

85% Tempranillo, 12% Grenache, 3% Mourvedre

Dusty plum, mushroom, green peppercorn and black cherry; spices, black fruit, peppery with a long, dark finish. 89 Eve pts.

2011 Petite Sirah

Layers of blueberry and black cherry, musty, violets; then flavors of dark black fruit, black pepper, dry and dusty. 88 Eve pts.

2013 Scosso

Jammy nose with blue to black fruit, earth and mint; juicy at the start, dry at mid-palate, same fruit profile as found in the nose. 89 Eve pts.

2013 Cani Amante Block 4, Ojai

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot

Lovely berry fruit, milk chocolate and oak trees; very dry, pepper, black fruit, big, and chewy. WE gave it 90 pts., so who am I to disagree? 90 Eve pts.

Vintage Beacon Circa 12/08: You may not have been there Sunday but you can get these wines…at Valencia Wine Company

March 17, 2015 by evebushman

Valencia Wine Company’s Annual Holiday Tasting was the wine affair of the season, as promised. Delayed a week by fire and freeway closures there wasn’t a lack of interest or attendance.  People needed a holiday now and it served to get them ready for the real ones to come.

Valencia Wine Co 3 pic photoThis 4th installment was a testament to proprietor Guy Lelarge’s wine influence in the Santa Clarita Valley. And, being the forth time around, wine, guests and good times quadrupled.  Enough so that the wines sold, offered at a discount to attendees, were sure to be a hit at many holiday tables in the next few weeks.

And if you’re unsure about what to serve this season with your special meals, use this tasting as a gander into the Valencia Wine Company “store.”  I dare you not to add a few delectable wines to your holiday planning list.  Your company will know that you have done your research.  So let’s get started, or as Simon from the American Idol show says, “Off you go”.

“I went to the first event, 4 years ago, we had 4-5 distributors, and that was a great event,” So stated frequent taster Tim Dixon.  “There are so many high-end retail bottles being poured, wines that you never see at a tasting.  And year after year it keeps improving.  No one does tasting better, no matter where you go, than Guy Lelarge.”

“We did it again,” Lelarge explained.  “The finest, the most high end, the best variety of wines from around the world are here.” I had to agree.  Guy knew what to serve for the holidays.

My own tasting notes marked several high priced wines that I’ve never seen poured at a tasting before and included, but weren’t limited to (as I might have missed something): Chateau Fonplegade St. Emilion Grand Cru Classe 2005, Bourgogne Clark En Bollery 2005, Pope Cabernet Reserve 2005, Robert Summerland Pinot Noir Nugent 2005, M. Coz Meritage 2005 from Mitch Cosentino’s own property and his Cabernet Reserve 2004, Nickel & Nickel Medina Vineyard Chardonnay 2006, Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 and Chardonnay 2007, Ken Brown Syrah 2003 and Pinot 2005, Dampierre Grand Cuvee Champagne NV and his Blanc de Blancs, Bodegas Mauro 2005, Jocelyn Lonen Napa Cabernet 2005, Gaja Promis 2006 Montes “Napa Angel” Cabernet 2006… no less than 17 pages of wines.

“My favorites so far are everything at Mitch Cosentino’s table,” Said guest Oliver Thomas. I’d drank with Oliver at the Wine Company on occasion and knew his tastes, not always on his native France, to be impeccable. “I recommend that you try the Bodegas Mauro as well.”

The Mauro was a favorite for Sandi Gordon too, “It fits my tongue like a glove”.

From there guests Paul and Jo Ann Vindigni suggested the Chateau Trocard Bordeaux Blanc 2007 reasonably priced for less than $20.  Denise Hollert like the La Rioja Alta Vina Alberdei 2001, again for less than $30.  There were to be plenty of wines available, and just as appreciated, as their more expensive counterparts.

Paul Young, selling his Rhone varietals exclusively to Lelarge in Santa Clarita, had made a fan of local sommelier, George Skorka, with his Schoffit Pinot Blanc 2005 that Skorka simply described as ‘gorgeous’.  I thoroughly enjoyed a decanted wine not on his list: Clos St Jean Chateauneuf du Pape 2006 created by winemaker Philippe Cambie.

From France we traveled to Australia and happily sampled Schild Barossa Shiraz 2006 that consistently had been awarded 90 – 96 ratings from Wine Spectator (WS) magazine throughout the years.  Then while trying a Cigale Meritage we were told, by an unassuming 21 year-old taster, Anthony Storniolo, that the Wayne Thomas Petit Verdot 2005 was “A fruit forward wine with just enough tannin and dryness at the end.”  I queried Storniolo as to his wine knowledge and he credited Certified Sommelier Instructor, DiMaggio Washington, and the class he had taken in wine appreciation that I keep meaning to take.

In New Zealand, John Adams lingered over the Hinton Pinot Noir 2004 with my husband Eddie before they moved onto a Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage 2007 from France. I savored the dusty Tohu Sauvignon Blanc 2007 run by the indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori, while Darlene Gandara enjoyed her Italian wine, Gaja Promis 2006, “It’s a staple in our cellar”.

Mark White, who always promises a donation to his local Rotary club every time his name is mentioned in a story, gave local California vintners, Summerland, an ‘A’ for their Pinot Noir Santa Rita 2006.  He also accompanied many of his favorites from the Southern Wine & Spirits table with a surprising giggle.  His wife Julie, who I thought was coming to his rescue, wanted us to try her own pairing suggestion of brownies with a Gloria Ferrer Royal Cuvee 2001. I could see where the giggling in this relationship might have started.  It was a fun pairing.  The only one Lelarge didn’t personally arrange.

Other domestic wines we enjoyed were the Sbragia Merlot Home Ranch 2005, Pope Napa Valley Zinfandel 2005, Angeline Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 and a Bridlewood Estate Syrah 2004 that well deserved its 92 WS rating.

Running into local winemakers, Tomas and Jenny Lukas, I decided to taste with them for awhile.  Tomas especially enjoyed the Ken Brown wines, finding “The Syrah nose has pepper, mint, fruit undertones, stiff base…makes me want to eat something roasted.”

Tomas introduced me to his friends, Derrick and Maureen McKaughan, the former described as a drinker and wine expert while the latter said that she knows a good wine when drinks she it. We debated the rating systems between the different experts and preferred to rely on ourselves today.

Well, maybe not exactly on ourselves.  Once again, we trusted Guy Lelarge to hold our one free hand.

The Beauty of Paso Robles – Destination B&E Vineyard, by Rusty Sly

November 17, 2014 by evebushman

Driving on Creston Road through Creston we caught a glimpse of a sign as we flew past that said B&E Vineyard. It was unanimous by all to turn around and check out this winery that none of us were familiar with. Driving up to the tasting room you can see their beautiful vineyards as you approach what looks like a saloon from the wild west. Walking into this quaint tasting room you will see antique memorabilia that quickly transports you into an era long gone. The friendly nature of the old days are reinforced with a greeting from Patti Bello who, with her husband Jerry Bello, own and operate B&E Vineyard. To complete our arrival we were met by Zeke, the resident dog greeter, and his wagging tail.

Patti

Patti Bello.

It is a small family run winery where they do everything from working the vineyards, making the wines, and operate the tasting room. In the early years they sourced their grapes to other wineries but according to their website, “In 1994 we started making our own wine but did not label any for sale until 2002. We started in 2002 with small lots and have been increasing our production since then.”   Many of their wines have won awards and have been rated from 90 to 91 points by judges. The primary varietals that they produce are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. I enjoyed all of the wines that Patti poured for us on our visit but my biggest thrill was tasting their absolutely gorgeous Merlots. This is a varietal that has received poor recognition since the Hollywood movie “Sideways” when Miles said, ” No, if anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I am NOT drinking any @#$%&! Merlot!” This is a shame as Merlot can be used in so many ways. The Grand Cru Bordeaux Petrus is almost 100% Merlot. I would not turn down even a small taste of this wine. Often used in blending, it can soften rough edges or bring out some fruit profiles that are missing in a wine.

Jerry and Patti are definitely going in a direction with their wines that I loved. It is no secret that I am a huge Meritage addict. The 2010 Red Rhythm is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. Absolutely gorgeous wine with its soft fruit flavors of the Merlot that is built on a solid Cabernet Sauvignon body. The tannins and acidity are structured and well integrated in this work of art. To really get an appreciation of B&E Vineyards Merlots, you need to try their 2008 and 2009. Each has its own uniqueness in flavor profile and acid structure but they are both beautiful wines.

They have a small section of their vineyard where they grow other reds for blending. One of these grapes is Syrah. As I venture through different Paso wineries I am finding that the terroir of this region produces spectacular Syrahs. B&E has two wines that use Syrah that are definitely worth mentioning. The 2009 Red Rhythm that contains 62% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Syrah. This wine was beautiful offering fantastic flavor and balance that one would expect from a well made blend. Now for the grand finale…they created a wine called Que Sera which is an absolutely gorgeous port type wine made from Syrah grapes. So intense and full of beautiful flavors that you will not leave without at least one bottle once you taste it.B&E Vineyard Tasting Room

As mentioned in my other articles on my recent trip to Paso, B&E follows suit with that warm, friendly hospitable environment that seems infectious to Paso Robles wineries. Even Zeke, Patti’s dog, provides lots of attention to the guests of B&E. The day we were there was on the 4th of July weekend and Patti said that it was very slow but still took pride in showing us the beauty of their artistic wines and opened new ones if she felt the wine did not offer the best showing. This practice of checking wines that sometimes are opened for one or two days is rare as it cuts into profits if they replace bottles for tastings. This is a sign of a professionally operated tasting room. Looking at the awards and ratings, it shows that they are very serious about their wines. It is evident she definitely wants you, the guest, to see the best that their winery has to offer. You must visit B&E Vineyards. It is a real treat.

Perlis Picks: FLAMINGO CONFERENCE RESORT AND SPA

November 1, 2014 by Michael Perlis

FLAMINGO CONFERENCE RESORT AND SPA

http://www.flamingoresort.com

How do you pick where to stay in wine country? For us, it’s a combination of things, and checking out the reviews of a place definitely factor into the equation. The decision is based a lot on location, since we like to be in the general area of where we will be exploring, but the quality of the lodging is, of course, important as well. And, let’s be realistic, affordability is an issue, as prices can range from “budget” to “super luxury”.

Photo of Flamingo Tower courtesy of Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa

Photo of Flamingo Tower courtesy of Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa

For our latest trip to Sonoma County, we knew we wanted to stay in Santa Rosa, as we planned to spend a lot of time in the Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys, but at the same time wanted easy access to the town of Sonoma and farther east as well.

Researching the area, The Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa seemed to fit the requirements. And the fact that it was modeled after the Flamingo in Las Vegas [and has been named a historical landmark] made it all the more interesting. Nice, well maintained facilities, friendly and helpful staff, good restaurant with an extensive menu selection, as well as entertainment in the lounge many evenings made this a great choice.

And, you can add in visits to the Montecito Heights Health Club and Spa next door.

Not surprisingly [this is wine country, after all], the owner of the hotel also owns a winery. The wines from Ehret Family Winery are available for tasting, purchase, and with your meal in the Terrace Grille Restaurant [of course there are many other wines on the restaurant wine list as well].

We sat down with restaurant manager Thomas Kelly to taste through the following wines:

2011 Sauvignon Blanc

2012 Meritage [blend of 72% Semillon and 28% Sauvignon Blanc]

2010 Syrah

2008 Cabernet Sauvignon

2008 Bella’s Blend [75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot]

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from wines made by a hotel owner. But, in fact, the owners of the hotel, Pierre and Susan Ehret, before starting their own winery, sold the grapes from their Knights Valley Vineyard to the likes of Beringer and Cakebread.

And winemaker Nick Goldschmidt had a long career with wineries such as Simi, Clos du Bois and Atlas Peak before becoming a full-time consulting winemaker. So, not surprisingly, these were all solid, well-made efforts. I especially liked the floral notes and long clean finish of the Sauvignon Blanc, the mellow mouthfeel of the Meritage, and the beautiful fruit of the Syrah.

No complaints from me. I’d definitely stay here again.
