My Fave Spirits: A Part Two on The Year When Drinking Spirits Became Everyone’s Favorite Pastime

February 19, 2021 by evebushman

The article I did on the wines I had in 2020 was a lot longer read than this will be, but since I do divide my time between reviewing both I wanted to share some of the spirits, and some of the cocktails, I enjoyed last year.

Single Spirits

NEFT Vodka is made from pure Austrian spring water, is a San Francisco World Spirits Competition winner for BEST VODKA, and has been awarded many GOLD and DOUBLE GOLD medals from other competitions! Tasting: Aroma from two inches away and swirling: reminded me of a very fine sake, like a daiginjo where the sake rice has been milled down to 50%. With a gentle sweetness, as well as a creaminess, and some slightly buttery and even nutty notes. Flavor: Smooth, burn on the mid palate only and not immediate. Still reminding me of a fine cold sake but of course, this is definitely a smooth and creamy vodka. The mouthfeel makes me want to sip alone, not masked by ingredients in a cocktail or even with ice. If I hold on the palate, the way whisky master blender Richard Patterson instructs for tasting single malt scotch, the mouthfeel only becomes rounder and more balanced.

Gonzalez Byass Familia de Vino and The Dalmore: In three small wine tasting glasses we sampled the Alfonso, Apostoles and Matusalem sherries. Almost immediately we noted similar aromas and flavors found in The Dalmore definitely came from these three different sherry casks that they had aged in. Quite remarkable. Also of note, even though the three sherries grew sweeter on the nose as we tasted through them, that didn’t transfer to high sugar in the mouth… The Dalmore 12 yo was an entire bowl of fancy roasted and slightly salted nuts, vanilla bean and a hint of banana. The 15 yo, my favorite of the three, had a sweeter nose; rounder, more fruit, creamy, with a little toasted almond and pineapple. And the 18 yo, following a trend, had the sweetest nose, with lots of toasted oak and more spice. Simply outstanding.

Enjoyed a virtual tasting and happy hour via Zoom with the founder of Empress 1908 Gin, Peter Hunt, complete with a bottle of their gin, fancy bar tools, unique recipe cards and a list of ingredients I would need to make “seasonal focused cocktails…” I was already a fan of the gin, now even more so!

House of Suntory and their distilleries, blended and single malts, different oaks for aging, rare and some discontinued = amazing tasting and lesson! It was the Yamazaki 18 that stole Eddie’s heart, and wallet if we could ever find it! While I was completely content with the Hibiki Harmony blend that benefitted from five different types of oak barrels.

Lots that we learned thanks to the Suntory Brand Ambassador Jonathan Armstrong and the Southern California Whiskey Club.

El Sativo, the 2020 Tequila of the Year at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, launched last summer. 100% Blue Agave – Single Estate – 100% USDA Organic – 100% NON-GMO – Certified OK Kosher… And this is what I thought: Notes of vanilla bean, heavy sweet cream and toasted popcorn kernel – with no burn whatsoever – on the nose. The taste was smooth yet peppery – so interesting – and flavors reminiscent of buttered popcorn, and that same cream, ending with a spicy finish. Really liked having it both smooth and spicy! Then tried it with a little bit of squeezed lemon and it was like a lo-cal Margarita. This is not a tequila to shoot!

Had a great time sampling Country Smooth whiskey with a bunch of Women Who Whiskey LA members as well as Country Smooth founder, Lori Carcich, and two members of her team, Kyle Cammon and Scott Touchton. The approximately $25 whiskey – find at Total Wine all over Cali – was both spicy and sweet and didn’t get washed down in the cocktails we made with it.

Cocktails

Gin Martini: 2-3 ounces of the highly aromatic and flavorful Monkey 47, 1/2 ounce of Lillet Blanc (a white Bordeaux wine with quinine and other botanicals), shaken or stirred, then drained into a chilled Martini glass, with orange peel on rim and as garnish.

Sazerac: Build in a shaker with ice: 2 ounces rye whiskey (husband prefers Bulleit), 3 dashes bitters, 1 teaspoon simple syrup, stir or shake. Grab an iced Coupe glass from your freezer (we keep a couple of Coupe and Martini glasses there), and pour about a tablespoon of Absinthe in to coat the empty glass. We like that flavor so I tend to make sure the entire inside of the Coupe is coated, then discard the Absinthe. Pour your cocktail into the coupe, garnish with one Luxardo cherry.

My Grand Negroni: When there’s only time for one, make it big! With 1.5 to 2 ounces gin (as opposed to only 1 ounce) to 1 ounce sweet vermouth and 1 ounce Campari, shaken over ice, poured into an iced Martini or Coupe glass and garnished with orange peel.

Gin and Tonic: Use Empress 1908 Gin that changes to a lighter purple/pink hue when you add tonic, and constructed the way we had G and Ts all over Spain: In a large round wine glass (aka a Pinot glass) 1/2 filled with ice, add 2 ounces gin, 4-6 ounces of tonic, garnish with lime or orange peel.

The go-to Martini: I’ve been making this one for my husband for years. Build in a martini shaker filled with ice: 2-3 ounces Ketel One Vodka, 1/2 ounce Domaine De Canton Ginger Liqueur (think candied ginger), shake like mad, pour into a chilled Martini or Coupe glass, use lemon peel on rim and garnish.

Whiskey Sour: In a martini shaker without any ice build 2 ounces your choice of whisky – I used Dewars 12 YO scotch whisky as I had taken a class on them years ago and loved all of the single malts that go into the blend. You can use single malt or Bourbon If that’s your preference. Then add 3/4 ounces of freshly squeezed lemon juice (not from a bottle), 1/2 ounce simple syrup, 3 generous dashes of Angostura bitters and 1 egg white. Shake for 7-10 seconds, then add a few ice cubes just to cool off your drink and shake again for an additional 7-10 seconds. Strain (super important as no one wants a glob of egg white in their glass) into a chilled coupe or serve on the rocks, add a Luxardo cherry for garnish.

My Blue Martini: In a martini shaker over ice build 2 parts Empress 1908 Gin, 1/4 to 1/2 creme de violette, shake like mad, pour into a chilled coupe or martini glass, garnish with orange peel and feel very refreshed!

The Queen Bee: With Empress 1908 Gin, lemon juice, honey syrup, apricot jam and grated cinnamon! I also tried my hand at the Cranberry 75, also with Empress 1908 Gin, lemon juice, cranberry juice, simple syrup and Prosecco on top!
(Google Empress for the measurements.)

Amaro Spritz: You only need three ounces of soda, two ounces of Amaro and a little squeeze of lemon or orange! Build in a tall Collins glass, stir, add ice and enjoy as an aperitif before dinner like we did or as a digestif afterwards!

Gin Old Fashioned: Build in a shaker two ounces your choice of gin, 2 dashes bitters (which gives it some color), about 1/2 teaspoon of simple syrup based on your own preference (if you muddle a sugar cube that’s about one teaspoon) and garnish with orange peel. Shake or stir, pour into an iced coupe or rocks glass.

Whiskey Buck: over cracked ice in a copper mug add two ounces rye whisky, juice of 1/2 lemon, and then fill as far as you like with ginger beer and give it a stir. It has a LOT more flavor that the traditional Moscow Mule made with vodka, and that same kick from the ginger and tart from the lemon. Trust me, in times like this when the vodka may be running low, get into your rye whisky for a change!

From Restaurants, on patios and to-go

Margaritas from Dario’s, classic Mai Tai at Eighth and Rail, Martinis from Old Town Junction, Backwoods, The Social and Salt Creek Grille. Loved the new Espresso Martini at Newhall Press Room! At SY Kitchen in Santa Ynez William Perbellini made us his Smoked Old Fashioned and a Barrel Aged Negroni, both outstanding. And last but not least we sadly had our last cocktails from Newhall Refinery.

In Paso: We made a quick stop at Azeo Distillery but made the time to taste and grab some swag from our friend David Vondrasek, the distiller, who is also the winemaker for Artisan Uprising! We sampled through rum, tequila, vodka – all very good, and we also saw his giant still! Definitely visit with them the next time you are in Paso and tell them I sent you, you won’t regret it!

Hollywood: Went to the Japan House LA for a “fun evening of Japanese Craft Spirits”, specifically to learn about and taste distilled spirits Shochu and Awamori alone and in a wide range of amazing cocktails.

My Fave Wines From 2020: The Year When Drinking Wine Became Everyone’s Favorite Pastime

February 12, 2021 by evebushman

Lots pop into our heads when we think of 2020, and of course we aren’t out of the woods yet, or even close, so far for 2021. For me it was a windfall of wines sent for review, often accompanied by a Zoom tasting led by the winemaker. I (virtually) traveled to Germany, Spain, Argentina, France, Italy and more in those meetings and via my own cellar. And before Covid shut things down I did have quick trips to Los Olivos, Paso Robles and the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. Below is a collection of some of my favorite wines from 2020. If any of this sounds good to you, go find these wines!

It turns out that I had about 50 wine tastings, if not more, in 2020. These shout-outs are from EveWine101 website articles: the 2020 Gambero Rosso Master Class, 2017 Bordeaux presented by the Union des Grand Crus, Vega Sicilia collectors dinner with Pablo Alvarez, Fontanafredda Barolo, wine from New Zealand’s Waipapa Bay, Folded Hills Winery with winemaker Angela Osborne, California Wine STARS 2020, LA County Wines (Byron Blatty, Acri Wine Company, Angeleno Wine Company and Cavaletti Vineyards), Zoom tasting with Suzanne Phifer Pavitt and their 2012 Date Night Cabernet, Camins 2 Dreams, Gary Farrell single vineyard Pinots with winemaker Theresa Heredia, revisiting Montemar, catching up with winemaker Mark Cargasacchi and Jalama wines, also visiting Ampelos and Zotovich in Lompoc, Switchback Ridge via the Grand Reserves Reward Master Card, tasting from family-owned wineries with Dr. Laura Catena, Anne Trimbach, Laure Colombo and Alessia Collauto Travaglini, great wines that stole my palate but not my wallet from Guarachi Wine Partners, reviewing DAOU’s Soul of a Lion, Tenuta Montemagno sparkling Barbera, Castello di Fonterutoli with Giovanni Mazzei, Paul Kornell Sparkling…

In SCV Elite Magazine this year I got to write about wine tasting in Paso Robles just before the shutdown. Had exceptional experiences at Thacher Winery, Tablas Creek Vineyard, Derby Wine Estates, Steinbeck Wines, Cass Wines, Eberle Winery, Oso Libre Winery, HammerSky vineyards and the Allegretto Vineyard Resort.

January started out great with my first, and last, visit and dinner at Marstons with my VP/BFF Michael Perlis, our wonderful spouses, all over lots of wine ($10 corkage!) including 2013 Audacious Grenache/Syrah/Cab blend by Law Estate, 2013 Comstock Rockpile/Sonoma County Zinfandel, 2009 Regusci Zinfandel Napa Valley…

At Wine 661: Lucas And Lewellen tasting where we sampled five of their Santa Barbara County wines, including a Rose of Pinot and a Bordeaux blend. Had a couple of wines off of the Happy Hour menu. This was not the last time I went to Wine 661 in 2020…

Now some single bottle shout outs:

Vinos Zanzonico 2017 Syrah Reserva: 100% Syrah, 13.5% alcohol, from the Valle de la Grulla area of Baja. With a regal dark purple color, I was drawn in to fantastic aromas of sweet black cherry, plum, tri-color peppercorns, layers of rich bark, milk chocolate…all very welcoming. I went in for a taste and was rewarded with a very rich and layered mouthfeel, with dark and dry blue to black fruit, grilled mushrooms, peppery spicy goodness and tannins that held my back palate at attention for a length that just would…not…quit. 99 Eve points.

2014 Old Vine Zichichi Family Vineyard Zinfandel from the Dry Creek Valley: The 14.8% alcohol didn’t translate at all to a hot wine on the palate, instead it delivered incredible substance. It started with a nose full of sweet dark plums, pipe tobacco, black licorice, toasted oak, black pepper and popcorn kernel. Going in for a taste my mouth was filled with delicious dried blueberry and blackberry, that same black pepper, tannins that held firm, and a great balance of the dark fruit and tannins to keep it lingering a long time on the palate. This was a new Zin discovery for me, will definitely be looking for it again!

Entourage by Two Papas Wine barrel fermented (1) and stainless steel (2) 2019 Chardonnay, Thompson Vineyard, Santa Barbara County: 1. Barrel: Designated by a gold wax top (the stainless has a silver wax top) I was amazed that this was a young 2019 vintage! It had lovely notes of creamy butter, pineapple, golden delicious apple and popcorn kernel that morphed into caramel apple on the palate, mild acidity, with a long, balanced and lush finish. 2. No barrel: Our stainless sibling gave off nicely scented whiffs of Meyer lemon, both cantaloupe and honeydew melon, and a little unsalted butter. When I tasted the wine I got homemade fruit cocktail, wet pebbles, low acidity and a medium finish.

2018 Kindred Rose of Pinot Noir: The color of rose gold, complete with sparkles! Then on the nose I found pink grapefruit, lemon pith, French Toast, Creme Brûlée, and Mandarin orange = all very inviting! In for a taste next, there is a very round mouthfeel, and the same citrus fruits I found on the nose – grapefruit, lemon and orange – with a medium acidity. Enjoy now, with or without food IMO!

2015 Phifer Pavitt XRoads Cabernet Sauvignon: Crushed dark cherry, wet forest floor, grilled steak and mushrooms, dark chocolate, black licorice, pipe tobacco, toasted oak, a hint of sweet cream and more all on the nose. Flavors included that same black cherry as well as blackberry, blueberry, a gamut of spices, velvety and firm drying tannins that of course require that you go back in for another sip…and another.

2012 Regusci Patriarch Proprietary Red: aroma: dark berries, dried leaves, figs, toasted oak and a bit o’ mint. Some of the same aromas in the flavors with the addition of dark chocolate.

2001 Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia, a Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont…I  looked for the roses, tar, licorice and red berries (notes from a professional critic) and also found tart berries, spice and tannins after decanting for 7 hours. So interesting.

Have you tried Guentota, aka the “Soul of Cuyo”, a “100-YR-OLD-VINE PREMIUM 2016 MALBEC” from Mendoza, Argentina? It’s from Belasco De Baqueano and was awarded 91 points from James Suckling. And I was far too busy lapping it up to make any tasting notes. But find it at Newhall Press Room. (Truth be told I had a LOT of wine from Newhall Press in 2020!)

2002 Joseph Phelps Insignia, I have no notes as I was also too busy drinking to take any. A stellar wine as it’s been proven vintage after vintage.

1999 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo: The nose and taste had really changed and mellowed over the 7 hours, with aromas of dried dark fruit, grilled mushroom, balsamic, dust and oak; on the palate I got both bright and dark fruit in a very fine balance.

From my local Pulchella Winery we had: Suspect sparkling wine, 2019 Latitude Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier blend, 2017 Mercenary Zinfandel blend, 2018 Witness Grenache…among others!

A note on Los Olivos: this was a non-press trip so no notes were taken. With that in mind we loved: Barbieri and Kempe are “Boutique wines made by Master Sommelier Paolo Barbieri” along with his wife Erin Kempe = bought a case! The second, Bella Cavailli Farms and Vineyard, produces some amazing wines against a backdrop of a working horse ranch, as well as some fun distilled spirits from Dorwood Distillery. Jeff Lockwood is the winemaker and his brother Jay the head distiller. We left there with both wine and spirts to enjoy at home.

A note from Wine on the Porch: During the summer months we enjoyed Hanzell Chardonnay, Saintsbury Chardonnay, Parhelion Cellars Light Pillar Chardonnay, St Supery Virtu Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc blend, Pagter Brothers 2018 Viognier, and from Hoi Polloi I snatched up their 2018 Rose of Grenache and Double-Gold Best-Of-Class 2018 Chardonnay!

A note about spirits: Yea, I wrote a lot about spirits this year too, stay tuned for a roundup of those next!

Look What’s New At Newhall Press Room: Seasoned Le Cordon Bleu Chef Larry Bethea Joins The Team

February 10, 2021 by evebushman

SANTA CLARITA VALLEY – The Newhall Press Room is looking forward to re-opening and serving the community with more amazing food and wine. To carry forward with their Wine Spectator award-winning history, they will explore new dishes, monthly specials and weekly wine events. In addition, they are thrilled to announce their newest team member, Larry Bethea, a Le Cordon Bleu trained Chef.

Larry Bethea, a Le Cordon Bleu trained Chef

Native of Southern California, Chef Larry chose to pursue a career in culinary arts in 2011. Graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts program, he dove into the world of food and hospitality. Fascinated by multiple facets of food service, he pursued many opportunities in the culinary field.

Rounding out his experience consisted of volunteering while in school, special events (food and wine festivals, weddings and concerts), sous chef at The Getty Center, and chef manager for food service company Sodexo.

Having established family roots from Belize to the East coast, food was a central melting pot of cultures and ingredients for Chef Larry. This provided him a foundation for a love of comfort food, Caribbean flavors and classical French cooking techniques. Chef Larry has carved out a style all of his own fusing various flavors and techniques to create one of a kind dishes.

Co-owner Charles “Chaz” Potter commented, “Chef Larry is a joy to meet and the staff loves his enthusiasm and cooking style. We are thrilled to have him on board and bring more wine and food pairings to the community.

Tasting Penfolds 2018 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz With Old and New Friends

February 5, 2021 by evebushman

From Penfolds, in the Barossa Valley, Australia, comes this 2018 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz. Had a lot of bins (just a numbering system Penfolds uses, they have many bins, aka Batch Id Numbers) and never had one I didn’t like.

I also adore the little food and wine bar that had decided to host a tasting: great wine, service and under five minutes from my house – the Newhall Press Room!

The Tasting Details

…we are exploring one of the oldest and most prestigious Australia wineries, Penfolds. Instead of creating a flight, we wanted to take a deep dive into the history of Australian wine making along with experiencing Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28. 94 points James Suckling, 93 points Robert Parker.

From Vivino on Bin28

Following the creation of Grange, Max Schubert’s vision was to create ‘a dynasty of wines which all had an unmistakable resemblance to each other. The first wine created in the series was Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz in 1959, a wine initially made while Grange was still being crafted in secrecy. Originally a single vineyard wine, Bin 28 now characterizes Penfolds contemporary winemaking philosophy, with fruit sourced from premium vineyards across several regions, including the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.

What We Learned

Treasury Estates Representative Scott Bowden shared many things about Penfolds. New for me was that Penfolds has an “old world approach in the new world”, the use of seasoned American oak barrels, they are the oldest iconic winery in Australia, they benefit from both warm and cold climates and they’ve had a fair share of 90 to 100 point wines. For this bin 28: They use ten different growing regions, it’s 100% Shiraz and the original Kalimna fruit source dates back to 1959. One more thing: stay tuned to Penfolds in March for news about their collaboration with California vineyards!

The Tasting and My Takeaway

We decanted the wine at 5 pm, tasted at 5:30, 6:00 and 6:30. At the start it was all red fruit, earth, cigarette, stewed fruit, dust, fig and tannins. The next time the wine was more open with more red to blue fruit, more pepper, more richness and more “grip” according to Bowden. Then again, nearly 90 minutes later there was an incredible balance. Quite remarkable.

You might expect my takeaway to be about the wine…it is but in a roundabout way. One of the things Bowden mentioned, when I asked about his favorite Penfolds wine, is that it’s never just the wine, or the pairing or the company, but you have to have it all for it to remain in your memory as a favorite. For me, it was virtually chatting with NPR’s somm Laura Raden like we have done at the bar many times. It was two of the three bar owners, Charles “Chaz” Potter and Dan Zebrowski, calling me out to “unmute” as I “always have something to say during a tasting.” It was chatting with people that I had never met before, again something I did often at their bar. For me, the best Zoom by far for in making me feel those experiences again. Cheers to the Press Room indeed.

The Latest from Newhall Press Room

It’s been an interesting year for all of us. We started off with a super fun January with our 50% by the glass wine and quickly moved into a great Spring. Once March hit, we had all had to figure out what was next. Luckily we started our grocery delivery business in support of the community and we were able to spin up our order online and food delivery business. This opened the door for us to deliver wine by the glass and offer new to go bottle pricing that matched or beat retail wine stores. We’ve been working hard to expand the amount of wine we have by the bottle in addition to adding new features such as espresso, cheese boards to go, along with wine related gifts and retail items.

To date, we’ve been recognized by Elite Magazine and The Signal as the best wine bar in Santa Clarita, and we have been recognized with back to back 2019/2020 award of excellence by Wine Spectator Magazine 2019/2020.

Our Monday through Friday lunch service is back and strong as ever, and now you can order your food through our website or app for delivery or pick-up.

If you are looking to have some fun with friends, family or need food for an event or business meeting, we’ve got you covered. We love our community and look forward to see you soon! (Editor’s note: At press time we have learned that the Press Room has re-opened for patio dining as well has hiring a new Cordon Bleu Chef!)

Roundup: The Best Santa Clarita (Outdoor) Dining

July 24, 2020 by evebushman

Seems to be that everyone in my ‘hood is searching for patio dining. Pretty great that locals want to support local businesses, considering it’s blazing hot outside. There are existing patio spaces that have expanded, new “pop ups” that have added fencing, wood flooring or AstroTurf, potted plants, misters, barricades, umbrellas, lighting and other décor. A pretty amazing feat considering that these restaurants are nowhere near full capacity – pre-covid standards – and are pretty much forced to invest in infrastructure that may only be needed for a few more weeks to quite a few more months. It’s not like any of us have lived through a pandemic before to know exactly how long this will last. (And if to-go or delivery is your preference, that’s great, just keep it up!)

The Social Restaurant: Custom Wood Deck and Arcum Structure, by 24/7 Events.

So, as your yet-to-be-announced unofficial Beverage and Food Ambassador of the Santa Clarita Valley, I’ve been watching over this trend. There are quite a few restaurants I have dined at myself, but I wanted to get as many listed in one place to help locals out. So you know what I did. I asked this on Facebook:

Looking for patio dining options? Please comment on a positive experience you had outdoors at Piccola Trattoria, Salt Creek Grille, Olive Terrace, The Social, Old Town Junction, Newhall Press Room, Marstons, Slaters 50/50, El Trocadero, Dario’s Newhall, Saddle Ranch, Don Cuco, The Local Pub and Grill, Wolf Creek Restaurant and Brewery, Casa Canela, Cheesecake Factory, Bricks Newhall, Smokehouse on Main, Nealie’s Skillet, The Way Station and Egg Plantation (the last three for breakfast and lunch only) and any other SCV outdoor dining you have discovered. Hopefully your experience will drive some much needed traffic to our favorite local restaurants!

Renee K: Add the Backyard Grub and Brews! That Nashville Spicy Chicken Sandwich and Donuts are the bomb!

Larry M: Old Town Newhall has the market cornered on outdoor dining. Had a lovely sidewalk dinner at The Old Town Junction. Then, dinner on the back patio at El Trocadero Mesquite Grill & Cantina, though they have a front patio as well, and they have the best hard shell tacos I have ever had.

Candice M: Olive Terrace outdoor seating arrangement is my favorite in town!

Michael G: Don’t forget Wolf Creek, CPK, Sabor, Lucille’s, Lazy Dog, Lucille’s, Catch 21, Wokcano and Tokai Sushi. So many options! Specifically, Wolf Creek Restaurant (on McBean) is always spot on. Plenty of room and safe distancing, staff all wear masks and face shields, busser and serve handle specific tasks. Tokai Sushi (in the same center with Catch 21 and Olive Terrace) has new owners, and take the same precautions. All the soy sauce is single use, there is plenty of open air space outside.

Michele G: The Backyard Grub N Brews had really good food and a great patio. They also have a fabulous brunch on the weekends with bottomless Mimosas.

Dawn A: A wonderful location for a great evening…The Social.

Michael P: Marstons has always been our favorite patio hang out in the SCV. Nothing like relaxing on their patio with a bottle of wine and their delicious food. Great servers too.

Meredith M: We had a magnificent meal last Friday night at the Old Town Junction. Reservations are highly recommended. New menu, exceptional service and a great wine list!

Lorenzo B: Olive Terrace is the bomb!

Laina M: While following all health code guidelines, we have full service available outside! But don’t sweat… We also have shade from a roll down screen and umbrellas, full roof covering, mister fans, and plenty of beer to quench your thirst!  Visit for lunch now or Reserve for dinner until 8pm.

Laura R: The Newhall Press Room has been open all week long for outdoor dining including the new extended patio!

Meredith A: Went to Dario’s in Canyon Country last night. They have a front and back patio. It was great to eat outside and enjoy their food!

Jeanie C: We had a lovely time last night at The Social! The weather was beautiful and the new outdoor dining was just right, as was our dinner and Martinis!

Kerri E: For patio dining, Wolf Creek and Olive Terrace so far. Looking forward to trying as many others as we can…

From me: The first night that the restaurants pushed into Main Street in Newhall, five minutes from home, I enjoyed patio dining at both Newhall Press Room (cute wine barrels as fencing and cooling AstroTurf) and The Old Town Junction (a bit bigger space but just as nice). We love El Trocadero’s two patios, front and rear, too. Since then I’ve made a GIANT mental note to visit The Social as their space – see photo – is very welcoming and also to return to Olive Terrace where the sidewalk seating now stretches around a huge fountain. We’ve been to the existing patios at Slaters 50/50 three times and Salt Creek Grille’s new HUGE three-patio area. Will be hitting up Nealie’s Skillet, Wolf Creek Restaurant, The Local, Bricks, Dario’s, Way Station and Egg Plantation too!

On more thing from me: alfresco dining is the one change I hope we keep post-Covid. We love our trips to Europe and spending hours in outdoor cafes, with our wicker seats lined up, side by side, facing the street for people watching. I want that. Somebody make that happen!

Please note that what may be listed here now could be open for dine-in or completely shuttered when you visit – so call first. Looks like reservations are the way to go as all only have the outdoor socially-distanced spaces available.

New-Haul To-Go: A Drive Through Experience

May 29, 2020 by evebushman

Popular Newhall Restaurants, Specialty Food Shops, Bars and Winery Tasting Rooms Join Together For One Day

With First-Ever Drive-Through Experience

Rising to the challenge that the current pandemic has placed us all in, and the need to supply food and beverages in a whole new way, several businesses in downtown Newhall have joined forces to share their best offerings, on one day, via “drive-through” pickups. The event is set for Saturday, June 6 from 4 to 7 pm. At press time the food and beverage-based businesses joining the event include Newhall Refinery, Old Town Junction, Eighth and Rail, Double Trouble Wine Room, Newhall Press Room, El Trocadero Mesquite Grill and Cantina, Pulchella Winery and Tasting Room, Rocket Fizz SCV, Brewery Draconum and the Old Town Newhall Farmers’ Market.

“This idea is new for us in Santa Clarita,” said event creator Eve Bushman, “But I’ve seen this in some wine areas since I had the idea, and wanted to be the first to offer this newsworthy experience here at home where we could all ‘travel’ locally to enjoy.”

Drive-through guests can start at either end of Main Street, pick and choose which business to drive up to purchase their items, all will have signage and tables set up outside of their establishments, no advance ticket or fee is required to attend. Some of the purchasing can be done online ahead of time – see the Facebook page posts for each business before the event for their advertising – and live at the event from their car.

Simon Mee, owner of Newhall Refinery commented, “We normally have big events down here, like Senses on Main, that serve our community. When Eve approached us with the idea we thought it was worthwhile. It had been a long time since we’ve been able to come together and this just seemed to be a good fit.”

Support Local Restaurants and Wineries – That Have Supported the Local Community

May 8, 2020 by evebushman

People that know me for the events I’ve worked on know that I have a couple of pet peeves that I make pretty clear to organizers before I’ll consider getting involved. The first is the pay-to-play event where the restaurant or winery is not only asked to donate food/wine and their personnel, they are also asked to pay for the privilege. Really? I don’t work on those.

Shannon Mee, Eve, Simon Mee. The Mees own Egg Plantation and Newhall Refinery.

The second pet peeve are the non-profit events where the organizers (and/or volunteers working for them) recruit wineries and restaurants and yet don’t “return the favor” by buying wine from the wineries, or dining in said restaurants.

I think both practices are pretty shameful. Today I’ll tackle how to rectify the latter issue, and how we can support our local community by dining out and buying wine now.

In this time of the Coronavirus I’ve made lists of all of the restaurants that have remained open that have donated to any of the events I’ve worked on or promoted. It was always appropriate to pay them back before, and to me, even more so now. So below you will find several lists of Santa Clarita businesses that have given their food or wine away to our non-profits for free.

At press time, this is a list of the restaurants on the FeedSCV website offering Drive-Thru/take Out. From this list I’ve selected the ones (and some I’ve added) that have supported the SCV by way of an event or other means (food for students) and if my memory serves me correctly they include:

Double Trouble Wine Room, Egg Plantation, Newhall Refinery, Gyu-Kaku, Honu Coffee, Jill’s Cake Creations, Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar, Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que, Marston’s Restaurant, Nealie’s Skillet, Newhall Press Room, Old Town Junction, Olive Terrace Bar and Grill, Route 66 Classic Grill, Salt Creek Grille, The Local Pub and Grill, The Social, Wolf Creek Brewery, Wolf Creek Restaurant, Alchemy, Solita Tacos and Margaritas.

Other restaurants that I’m not sure (again at press time) if they are open, but we may be able to buy gift cards from to support them now, and/or dine in them once the re-open. These include Greater Pacific in the Hyatt, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Smokehouse on Main, Claim Jumper, Red Lobster, Brewery Draconum, DeRobertis Family Artisan Cheeses (offers classes), Clarice’s Cake and Candy Supplies and Jersey Mike’s.

Local wineries (again some may be open for curbside service so check with them first) that have participated in non-profit events include Pulchella Winery, Parhelion Cellars, Entourage by Two Papas, Due Nasi, Pagter Brothers, Hoi Polloi Winery (Pagter and Hoi Polloi share the Double Trouble Wine Room on Main Street in downtown Newhall), Golden Star Vineyards, Alonso Family Vineyards (at Le Chene), Stephen Hemmert Wines, Reyes Winery and Agua Dulce Winery.

For me, to date, I’ve purchased from Newhall Press Room (dinner and groceries), Salt Creek Grille (dinner and wine), Egg Plantation (lunch and groceries), Route 66 Classic Grill (dinner and cocktails to go), The Social (dinner and cocktails to go), Olive Terrace Bar and Grill (dinner and wine to go), Wolf Creek Restaurant (dinner and wine to go), Parhelion Cellars (free no-touch delivery and discounted wine) and Pulchella Winery (club wine delivered). I have many more to go. (Note: When I’ve shared photos on social media there is usually one or more comments regarding other restaurants people want me to visit. Nothing against those, we all have our reasons to support different local businesses, but I have my way and you may have yours. Doesn’t make either wrong! Support local is good any way that you do it, just do it.)

The events that come to mind when I made these lists are food and wine centric. These include my own Cocktails on the Roof and Wine on the Roof as well as other big non-profit events like our Taste of the Town, Vine 2 Wine, The Wine Affair, Sunset in the Vineyard and the SCV Charity Chili Cook Off – and I’m sure there are others I haven’t thought of.

So if you have attended a food or wine event in this town, please take a moment to think of the wines and dishes you’ve enjoyed, and make your own list. Those in the service industry need our support now more than ever. And if you happen to be reading this in another community, I challenge you to seek out and patronize the restaurants and wineries that have supported your town as well. And then keep up the habit!

What We’re Drinking During Coronavirus

April 17, 2020 by evebushman

Haven’t written about this yet, but it would appear that the subject won’t wait. Over the last few weeks, and possibly many more to come, our new normal has been to stay at home as it’s safer at home. While we’ve been making a small dent in our wine cellar, and an even bigger dent in our liquor cabinet, it’s made me wonder what others are doing. So I reached out to pals on social media to find out what they’ve been enjoying at home now more than ever before. (Note: Those of my friends in the industry are noted as such.)

Me, drinking and social distancing.

Joe W. “Much like you, I’ve gotten a lot of wine samples sent for review. Rose and sparkling have been personal preferences. Keep it light during these heavy times. Somehow focusing on making a variety of appetizers to eat instead of bigger meals.” (Industry)

Elana H. “We have been putting a dent in our wine cellar and liquor cabinet as well! Margaritas w/fresh squeezed Meyer lemons, Grand Marnier and tequila over ice with a salted rim. Then wine with dinner. Had a delicious 2014 Terra De Promissio Vineyard Pinot Noir from Whetstone Wine Cellars last night. During the day we have been sending out our wines to people all over the country and hosting tastings through Zoom. https://prioritywinepass.com/prime-solum-napa-valley-virtual-wine-tasting/

Michelene L. “Southern sweet tea and I have no idea why.”

Brenda R., “All the wine and spirit stores in PA have been closed since March 16. Thank God for CA wineries. Ordered some (and they) came in two days. Will have to order more.

Judi L. “Consciously unboozing limiting to, at the most, a glass of wine (whatever’s around) or one cocktail or a shot of mezcal/whiskey/rye. Oh yeah…beer…I love booze but actually not a big drinker. I’m an excellent sniffer and sipper.” (Industry)

Nelson L. “Sales and cheap shipping.”

Michael D. “We went through some great whites early on from Williams Selyem and Guy Farge that paired really well with the cheeses that we got from Lucques. Late night has been about Armagnac and Angel’s Envy Rye. I’ve also recently bottled a Brut IPA and am getting ready to brew a Belgian Tripel…(drinking) a wee bit more (than usual).

Karen B. “Finishing up the last of my 2018 Rosés to make room for the 2019s. Paul Lato 2018 in my glass right now! I was buying at cost, so helluva deal. I’m actually drinking less because we’re open just 3 days a week now and there is no social drinking or tasting with friends.” (Industry)

Nancy F. “I’m either vodka with sparkling soda, gin or vodka martini, or Negroni which are delicious and way too easy to drink! Or it’s wine. Like to switch it out as a I love all. However, the last 2 nights I started out with a fresh orange and lime juice margarita on the rocks with a salt rim…(And you may not have known that) I was a bartender for many years.

Taylor K. “Sales from local restaurants!”

Rick P. “This could be our only salvation; people are drinking all stockpiled wine. Hopefully we will see a buying surge when it’s all over. Otherwise say goodbye to a lot of small wineries.” (Industry)

Jennifer S., “Small dent in the wine cellar and a VERY large dent in the liquor cabinet. Need more scotch, whiskey and vodka. Thank goodness the liquor store is essential.”

Annette S., “Making a definite dent in the wine cellar.” (Industry)

Michael F. “Wine… Wine… & Oh Yeah; WINE! Along with some craft beers and a few fine spirits!” (Industry)

Dan C. “Old Fashioned!”

For me: Local deals from local and Paso wineries including Byron Blatty, Parhelion Cellars, Hoi Polloi, Pagter Brothers, Opolo, Thacher Winery, Hammersky…deals on wine and cocktails-to-go from The Press Room, Egg Plantation, Wolf Creek Brewery and Restaurant, Route 66 Classic Grill, Salt Creek Grille, Dario’s…Zoom tastings with our Napa friends…curbside pick-ups, free shipping and one dollar shipping incentives also. It’s all good during a very trying time.

Newhall Press Room is here with groceries to “Help People Out”

April 4, 2020 by evebushman

We recently ordered some amazing groceries from our local wine bar, the Newhall Press Room, not only because we needed them but because many of the foods offered we often ordered and enjoyed at the wine bar.

This was the caption for the photo, from my social media post:

What’s on your plate? It’s another day to #SupportLocal #StayHome #OrderIn and this time it was…groceries from Newhall Press Room – one of the owners delivered all of our favorites including Spanish Chorizo, Jambon de Paris, Aged Cheddar, Brie, their new 2017 Leviathan red blend wine as well as extra large eggs, chicken breasts and hamburger. If you need fresh or frozen fruits, dairy, meats, vegetables, breads or other staples check them out! We already made egg salad on the Ciabatta, next will be having a lovely cheese and charcuterie board! If you are in need, email is @ info@newhallpressroom.com for the entire pricing sheet.

##

This is from Dan Zebrowski, one of the three owners of Newhall Press Room, in answer to why they are providing this service:

“I am not sure why other restaurants did this, but for us it was mostly to help people out. We have a very small, scratch kitchen. Because we are small, we order daily and only enough for service. When all of this happened, we didn’t have a lot of stock at the restaurant.

We originally sent our first grocery list, exclusively, to our Press Club loyalty members (re-printed and posted below). We made the decision early on that we were going to keep our prices as low as we can. While it causes constant monitoring of our vendors and editing of our price sheet, it has kept our prices affordable and accessible. Honestly, we did not expect a lot of people to take advantage of this service. We just hoped that people who really needed it, would reach out to Press Room.

Our hopes were realized when 2 of the first 3 email responses we received were people who were “at risk” and/or worked in the medical field and couldn’t get to the grocery store before it had gotten picked clean. At that point, we decided that we were going to offer this service to our loyalty program members.

However, before we knew it, other people found out about what we were doing for our loyalty program members and wanted to take advantage of our service. After a little internal discussion, we decided to make our grocery list available to anybody who needed it. Now, we have some folks who just like the convenience, some people who just want to avoid the grocery store, and some people who truly need the help. It is for that latter group of people that we continue to offer groceries.

If you know of someone in need, please have them reach out to us directly at info@newhallpressroom.com.”

Downtown Newhall’s Latest Wine Bar, Newhall Press Room, Achieves Prestigious Wine Award

August 12, 2019 by evebushman

Newhall Press Room Receives The Wine Spectator Award Of Excellence – The Only Santa Clarita Valley Restaurant Awarded With This Distinction

SANTA CLARITA VALLEY – Downtown Newhall’s brightest new star, the Newhall Press Room wine bar and restaurant, was recently presented with a very enviable honor: Wine Spectator magazine’s Award of Excellence. The Press Room is the only restaurant in the entire Santa Clarita Valley that has been given this award for 2019.

According to the Wine Spectator magazine, “The Award of Excellence recognizes restaurants whose wine lists feature a well-chosen assortment of quality producers along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. Ranging in size from 90 selections to several hundred, these lists are well-focused and tend to emphasize discovery.”

The latest wine bar to open in downtown Newhall, The Press Room is known for its wine list – with over 100 wines on the menu and an inventory that currently has over 1,100 bottles. Wine lovers and aficionados alike appreciate the selection, a living and breathing entity as wine itself is often described, and current California wines on the list include varietals from Nickel & Nickel, Caymus, Leonetti, Oberon, Switchback Ridge, Sojourn, Opolo, Sextant and many more wines from around the globe including the new 2016 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia, a Tuscan wine recently awarded 100 points.

One cannot live on wine alone and the Press Room rounds out their menu with popular small and large plates including building your own cheese and charcuterie boards, steaks and house-made pasta. Wine education, live music, special events, weekend brunch, Happy Hour and $7 wines by the glass every Sunday keep guests coming back.

Read more about the award and Newhall Press Room online or in the current issue of Wine Spectator. The Press Room is located in Downtown Newhall at 24257 Main Street and can be reached at 661-753-3454.
