Bubbly with #ClinkDifferent

July 9, 2021 by evebushman

The latest educational wine tasting event from Clink Different “celebrated all things sparkling from Germany and Bordeaux (with) a virtual tasting of Crémant de Bordeaux and German Sekt.” We were greeted in the Zoom presentation by Cecile Ha from the Bordeaux Council. Ha shared that both Germany and Bordeaux created white, red and sparkling wines, benefitted from a young generation of both male and female winemakers, and both are also well known for healthy tourism in their respective wine regions. Ha then introduced our host for the event, New York Sommelier and Martha Stewart Living wine expert Sarah Tracey.

Tracey shared that all of the four sparkling wines we were to taste “checked off all of the boxes” in being delicious, fun and affordable. She had presented a food pairing for each sparkler which I will share in our tasting notes below. For this tasting I enlisted help from local pals and Friends Who Like Wine in The Glass founders Vashti and Stephen Roebuck.

The Bubbles

Celene NV Cuvee Amethyste

60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc. Region/AOC: Crémant de Bordeaux. SRP: $12. Importer: Fine Wine and Good Spirits.

From Tracey: Bordeaux Crémant AOC can be made with both white and red Bordeaux grapes, they spend 12 months in traditional aging methods and there are 214 growers in the appellation. This example was a Blanc de Noir, meaning a white wine from red grapes, and should be drunk within one to two years of bottling. Aromas and flavors: yellow plums, persimmon, honeysuckle. Suggested pairing: green olives, oysters, something salty/briny and creamy.

From our group: We found the choice of red Bordeaux grapes unique, but the flavor was all sparkling with no hint of red fruit: apple, French toast, sweet Meyer lemon, white peach and wet pebbles. A steal and a conversation starter for $12.

Markus Molitor NV Riesling Sekt

100% Riesling. Region/AOC: Mosel. SRP: $19. Importer: Banville Wine Merchants.

From Tracey: Sekt is the word for sparkling in German and there are different quality levels. In the 1800s German winemakers traveled to France to learn how to make sparkling wine. The Mosel region is known for Riesling, is the oldest, has very steep inclines and red volcanic slate soil. Aromas and flavors: Pear, peach, white pepper and nectarine. Suggested pairing: Prosciutto due to its fat and saltiness, working well against the acidity in the wine.

From our group: Cantaloupe melon, biscuit, cool asphalt and milk aromas, with flavors of peach, Red Delicious apple, sweet creamed corn and a nicely carbonated 7 Up. I’d totally buy this one for $19.

Calvet 2018 Brut Rose

100% Cabernet Franc. Region/AOC: Crémant de Bordeaux. SRP: $18. Importer: Monsieur Touton.

From Tracey: 31% of Crémant de Bordeaux are Rose wines, with over 100 wine growers planting specifically for Rose Crémant. There has been a 13% increase in the past 10 years making Rose. The grapes for this wine were manually harvested and manually pressed. Aromas and flavors: Raspberry, wild strawberry and tannins. Suggested pairing: milk chocolate with 40% to 50% cacao, the tannins in both make the pairing work. Also goes well with Prosciutto.

From our group: Very pretty rose gold color with bubbles racing their way to the top of my glass. On the nose there was icy peach, cantaloupe melon, red berries and wet river rock; followed by flavors of freshly sliced peaches, more melon including Honeydew, sweet ripe pears and an interesting minerality that played on my palate for a long finish.

Raumland Cuvee Marie-Luise Brut 2013

100% Pinot Noir. Region/AOC: Rheinhessen. SRP: $46. Importer: German Wine Collection.

From Tracey: This wine is made by “The Pope of Sekt”, has a cooling influence from the climate as well as chalky soil. This was the “premium” wine in the line-up. Aromas and flavors: fresh, minerality, saltiness. Suggested pairing: Drunken Goat cheese and any other “zingy” cheeses.

From our group: Green apple, cheese toast, almond cookie, white peach, Hawaiian ginger flower, citrus oil and hints of crisp slate. This was the favorite amongst the people in the Zoom tasting.

LIBRANDI: THE AUTHENTIC CALABRIA

May 15, 2021 by evebushman

Encircled between two seas, Calabria offers a changing and unparalleled landscape, from the rugged peaks and lush forests of the hinterland to the clear beaches of its shores. Librandi is based in Cirò Marina, a town overlooking the Ionian Sea, with its hilly and flat vineyards set in the Mediterranean maquis.
The activity of bottling Gaglioppo and Greco Bianco based wines began in 1953 in the small winery in via Tirone and the company has always been exclusively family-run: managed until 2012 by the founding brothers Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi; today, after Antonio’s passing, it is run by Nicodemo, Raffaele, Paolo, Francesco and Teresa Librandi. An important choice that sees the Librandi family at the forefront of all the company’s activities: from vineyard management to marketing.
The several family estates cover about 350 hectares, of which 232 are vineyards, 80 are olive groves and the rest woodland where craftsmanship and manual work supported by innovative technological tools represent the mix that has always characterized the work of the Librandi family.

In the Rosaneti estate they have given birth to a “varietal garden”, a collection of autochthonous vines that currently contains about 200 varieties recovered throughout the region and arranged in a vineyard with a characteristic spiral shape. It is here that some of the most important and representative wines are born, the result of research work on the native varieties: Efeso and Megonio.
Moreover, the estate houses the museum of vine and wine and farming activities Vi.Te.S (VIticulture, Territory and History), a collection of artefacts, tools and utensils partly kept over the years in the warehouses of the Librandi family, partly belonging to other local families who have given new life to precious objects in their possession. Visiting the museum is a unique experience that takes you back to an archaic but highly ingenious world.Autoctonous Grape varieties: Gaglioppo, Greco Bianco, Magliocco, Mantonico

Olive Oil Club Enjoys Top 5-Star Rating from Top Consumer Reviews

January 18, 2021 by evebushman

OVERLAND PARK, KAN. (PRWEB) – TopConsumerReviews.com once again awarded their highest ranking to Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club, a popular choice among subscription-based Olive Oil retailers.

Olive oil offers many benefits as part of a healthy diet — and it tastes amazing! However, many shoppers aren’t aware that what they buy off their supermarket shelves is rarely fresh, often mixed with less expensive non-olive oils, and probably doesn’t have much of a range in flavors. When it comes to high-quality olive oil, the maxim of “you get what you pay for” holds true: the best oils tend to cost more but deliver an extraordinary taste experience. How can true foodies and aspiring kitchen magicians get their hands on the freshest, purest olive oils available today? The most fun way is through an Olive Oil Club membership. These subscription-based companies go to great lengths to source the world’s best varieties, often produced in small batches by artisanal growers, and many times deliver the products within a month or less of being pressed.

“With Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club, you can try a full-sized bottle of premium olive oil for just $1 — starting you on a taste journey you’ll definitely want to continue with their quarterly deliveries,” affirmed Brian Dolezal of TopConsumerReviews.com, LLC. “As an ‘olive oil sommelier’, Fresh Pressed owner T.J. Robinson travels the world with his team, to find the best harvests for their loyal customers. Subscribers choose between the small and the large set (three 250-mL bottles or 500 mL bottles) which arrive every three months. With each shipment, customers get a detailed newsletter describing each olive oil’s origins, providing recipes and pairings, and offering in-depth knowledge about the olive oil industry. While Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club backs their olive oils with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, customers rarely need to take advantage of it: the quality of the olive oils in this club is exemplary. For all of these reasons, Fresh Pressed Olive Club once again earns our highest recommendation among Olive Oil Clubs in 2020.”

Tasting Ethically Sourced Ethereal Confections – “A Simulation of Love”

December 18, 2020 by evebushman

A few weeks ago I received a friendly email from Becky Cortina of Ethereal Confections, offering samples of handmade candy for review, candy literally made to order. Becky wrote, “Ethereal’s bean-to-bar confections are all handcrafted from beans we ethically source from single origin estates and co-ops; paying above fair trade pricing. We care for our community, customers, and staff-putting our hearts into creating smooth and delicious chocolates for all to enjoy.”

I invited over a couple of guests to sample with me, at a distance from each other but not from the chocolate. This is what happened:

The Meltaways, photo by Red Wall Photo

www.redwallphoto.com

Our Review

Oh my, so many chocolates! This is the list of what we tried and our thoughts on each:

Dark Chocolate Bars topped with 1. Strawberries, Rose Petals and Pink Peppercorn: very fresh strawberry flavor and a lingering peppery finish. 2. Candied Ginger, Candied Orange Peel and Coriander: “yum” was the common descriptor, followed by how refreshing it was, the coriander really played out on the finish, and who took that one home with them? 3. Whiskey Infused Chocolate Bar with Whiskey-Soaked Cocoa Nibs: loved the crunch, the chocolate, and one guest commented that it made her wine taste so much better! 4. Blueberry, Lavender and Almonds: Saved that lavender for the finish, the aromas were top notch, as was the combination of flavors.

Sample box of 4 dark chocolate truffles: (We weren’t completely sure what these all were but were told what they probably were.) A Caramel Mocha with toasted coconut on top was better than a Carmel Macchiato at Starbucks, the Salted Karma with a dusting of salt was extremely rich, the Peanut Butter Jelly Time with peanuts on the outside, chocolate and jelly inside was devoured by my PB and J sandwich a-day husband and the Bourbon Pecan was nutty, salty, with peppery notes that were a nice surprise, as well as the use of quality bourbon.

Dark Chocolate Olive Oil Meltaways collection included: Vanilla Sea Salt had a chalky quality – not unattractive – and a very nice balance. The Blood Orange was firm – not gooey – and dark, rich, citrusy, with a bite, I loved it. And finally a sample of the Raspberry Vanilla had a wonderful burst of fresh raspberry layered with all that wonderful chocolate.

The consensus from the group was summed up by this statement they agreed on: Tasting the Ethereal Confections simulated a feeling of love – they were that satisfying.

From Ethereal Confections

The “bar” in Ethereal Confections.

In a historic town square in the quaint town of Woodstock, Illinois, we – Mary, Michael, & Sara – opened our craft chocolate and dessert bar, Ethereal Confections, in 2011. Since day one, we have continued to take the same care and attentiveness with each and every handcrafted bean-to-bar sweet, importing whole cacao beans from farmers producing single origin beans from Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ghana, and Haiti. The cacao beans are then roasted, winnowed and ground into chocolate that gets transformed into exquisite confections and inventive flavor combinations.

All cacao we import is ethically sourced. We only source from countries where we can visit the farms and co-ops. We pay above fair trade pricing – with a direct positive impact on farmers and communities. We only import heirloom, organic cacao- meaning the aroma and flavor is always the best possible!

Reviewing DAOU’s Soul of a Lion and GIFTS too!

November 27, 2020 by evebushman

My history with DAOU is a long one, so I was thrilled to receive the 2017 Soul of a Lion to review, as well as some gift ideas that I’ve shared below my tasting notes. Let me start with some of my previous notes:

I covered the first few annual Cab Collective events, a multi-day educational retreat for press and sommeliers that was started by Daniel Daou and other Cab-minded Paso vintners. This article ran in January 2017 in Elite Magazine, all about the event (but don’t blame me for this title, it should read the well-rated not underrated) https://scvelitemagazine.com/2017/01/underrated-wines-paso-robles-cabs-distinction-grand-tasting-2016/

At another tasting event this is what I thought of just one vintage: DAOU Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2013 – Who isn’t a fan of DAOU? This reserve Cab was all tobacco, dark and dry and good to go.

An excerpt from another Cab Collective, and also getting my first taste of Soul of a Lion, this is what I’ll share: Daou told the crowd, “We don’t get a bad vintage often…it’s our trademark” as “our region achieves ripeness year after year” delivering wines of “perfect balance.”

From a 2013 report from Robert Parker I also shared: Paso Robles CAB Collective (PRCC) members were awarded dozens of scores well above 90 points for their red Bordeaux-style wines including 98 points and 96 points for DAOU Vineyards and Winery’s 2013 Patrimony and 2013 Soul of a Lion, respectively.

And back in 2010 I wrote: Daou spoke of how he co-founded DAOU with his brother Georges and how Paso Robles has the “most French-like terroir we could find in California.”

2010 Soul of a Lion: Daou said they produced 550 cases of this wine, which saw “new French oak aging for 24 months, still needs some time.” It sold out in five weeks in tasting room. EB: Mint, full/round, plump dark fruit, milk chocolate; Tannic, dusty dark fruit, pepper, long finish.  Good to go now or cellar, very nice.

TODAY AND TASTING THE 2017 SOUL OF A LION

A pretty black cherry in color, opaque. Onward, we are greeted with aromas reminding me of sweet fruit leather: blackberry, blueberry and plums; then cherry cola, milk chocolate, white pepper, medium toasted oak and a hint of rich caramel. Next comes a very rich mouthfeel of flavors. Layered fruit and spice: dark, dark fruit and tamed spice; with a juicy, long finish. Can imagine this 2017 getting even more interesting with more age.

##

##

And here, as a reminder, is my story from my own visit there in 2018:

Oh dear me, what kind of karma do I have? Apparently the best. I’m sitting at a dining table, in a one bedroom cottage, set apart from a large estate, perusing an antique piano turned into a display case, a couch and two armchairs – that all recline – a beautiful modern kitchen area with everything you could possibly need for a welcome stay – from coffee maker to teapot, corkscrew to sweet and salty snacks and a large fireplace, television, another seating area…and that’s just in the front room. (Ed’s taking a nap in the bedroom so we may get there later.)

I am just starting this article and it’s slow going as I find my eyes drifting to one of many windows where the sun has begun to set behind the patio, garden and vineyards. If this isn’t my heaven then I don’t know what is.

##

The sun has now set, but before it grows too dark I see little bitty lights in the tree on our patio. I’m itching to go out and sit at the table and open a bottle of wine. But we’re in Paso Robles. And since Grapestake Cottage is so inviting, I forget for a minute that I have winery appointments. I made a quick evaluation of our calendar and decide that on at least one of our nights, Sunday, we will be bringing in a pizza, opening one of the many wines we’ve purchased to enjoy on the patio, watch that sunset again, and then retreat inside when it gets cold to flip on the fireplace, take our shoes off, don one of the provided terry robes, put some popcorn in the microwave, put our feet up and get cozy.

We also made sure to set some time to get to know Nancy and Owen Belletto, our hosts, a wee bit better. “It all started with a tractor” was the joke Owen made when we first met, and that tractor – and everything that came after – was the turning point that soon meant building a cottage, an incredible garden and…vineyards.

The name Grapestake has a meaning as well. I learned that Owen used 40-year-old wooden grapestakes – now grapestakes are all made of metal – to repurpose them as fencing for the cottage just as he had seen in some homes in Carmel. After meeting Owen, and seeing the amazing property, I could easily visualize him as he “spent countless hours cutting, sanding and measuring” just for the beauty it would provide for guests…

As we were told to “please feel free to wander the vineyard and grounds” we did. But as I didn’t want to run into any gophers, I waited until our set interview time with Owen and Nancy to learn more about the Bellettos and their home. I learned that when they chose the property that the estate home was already built, which had formerly been a B and B and required no more work, a stipulation Nancy required before moving in.

That requirement was really more of a model, as within a short time the gravel parking area become the base of the cottage, the grounds now included olive trees, and the same designer that had built the home was called upon to build Grapestake Cottage – however in the original plans the cottage was only built to house Owen’s tractor. But Owen needed a bathroom near the tractor…but why just have a bathroom without a bedroom…and Grapestake Cottage began to really take shape, literally.

All in all there are 8 acres on the property under vine, 7.5 of those acres are Syrah – they are estate growers for Justin, and were named the grower of the year in 2016 – and the remaining .5 acres are for Grenache and is reserved for Owen’s winemaking alone. Owen has a background in agriculture – the pair met while in studies at UC Davis – where they were starving students for a short time, enjoying wine tasting in nearby Napa valley back in the days when it was free to taste.

Fast forward to present day in Paso. They have met welcoming and charming people in the Paso wine industry. Any local winemakers, they feel, are very free with answering any wine question put to them without a nuance of elitism.

“Paso Robles is where Napa was 30 years ago,” Owen began. “insofar as how people are treated.” And a good way to explain why so many wine people may prefer tasting and touring in Paso over Napa. It’s not just the difference in the cost of wines, but also in how Paso treats its guests.

As far as how they treat their own guests, and circling back to how we felt our accommodations were far and above the standard, Nancy explained, “I’ve traveled with Owen on many trips and have often been irritated by asking to pay for items like water bottles and snacks. So we put a lot of thought into what a guest would like that we would also appreciate.”

Located in the most secluded area of property’s exclusive guest room level, the two free-standing, two-bedroom, two-bath specialty suites offer unobstructed views of lush vineyards and the Mayacamas Mountains, and overlook Parc du Soleil, which features the hotel’s extensive gardens, nature paths and sculpture garden.

Inspired by the relaxed sophistication of the South of France and infused with California soul, Auberge du Soleil offers the most luxurious accommodations in Wine Country. All 50 rooms and suites are nestled into a 33-acre sun-drenched hillside olive grove and showcase an aesthetic of comfortable elegance that continues to distinguish Auberge du Soleil as a design icon among the top boutique luxury hotels in the United States.

The luxurious residential-style interiors of the 1,800-square-foot Private Maisons – as well as the 48 previously completed rooms and suites – were created by Suzanne Tucker, recognized as one of the leading interior designers in the country by Architectural Digest’s AD100 and most recently named to the ELLE Decor A-List 2019. Tucker is owner and president of San Francisco-based Tucker & Marks Inc., renowned for timeless interiors and classic design. The Private Maisons feature a softened palette inspired by the maisons’ olive grove setting with its variegated green hues. Custom-designed furnishing and textiles in an earthen palette of pale olive and sage tones are accented with ivory and sand, including linen in Tucker’s “Criquet” pattern, inspired by the nightly sounds of nature emanating from the hillside gardens. Textural finishes include plaster ceilings, exposed wood beams and cerused oak floors, along with custom draperies in a soft tribal print accented with embroidery. As with every Auberge du Soleil guest room, Tucker incorporated a touch of soleil, with a subtle tone of pale persimmon, the inn’s signature color.

Other key design elements include graphic floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows and doors, which flood the interiors with natural light, dramatically frame majestic views and open onto expansive private terraces that invite sunbathing and romance with sculptural outdoor tubs and showers. Tucker’s decades-long relationship with Auberge du Soleil began as an apprenticeship with the hotel’s original interior designer, Michael Taylor, widely known as the pioneer of the “California Look” and named one of Architectural Digest’s “20 Greatest Designers of All Time.” Over the years, Tucker has evolved a look and feel that perfectly balances timeless luxury with Taylor’s original vision.

“Privacy is one of our greatest luxuries, so we wanted to ensure that guests walking into Cannes and Monaco feel like they have the property all to themselves,” said Tucker, noting the spacious, organic feel reflected in the colors and textures of the interiors. “As a designer, it has been an incredibly rewarding journey working with the Auberge du Soleil team to redesign all 50 of the rooms and suites. These two Private Maisons represent the crème de la crème and seem such a fitting way to complete this extensive labor of love.”

Each Private Maison welcomes guests with an airy central living room with fireplace, comfortable sectional sofa and a glass-encased dining and bar area, all designed in a warm, earth-toned palette with textural cerused wood, rich woven fabrics and carefully selected art books and accoutrements. Each Maison includes two master suites, each furnished with a California King bed accented by a dramatic hand-carved headboard of mirrored fretwork that extends to the ceiling. Premium organic mattresses selected from San Francisco-based McRoskey Mattresses, renowned for craftsmanship, are dressed in the Corsica and Saint-Tropez textiles that Tucker designed exclusively for the hotel. In addition, a wealth of special touches, amenities, services and refreshments await Private Maison guests upon arrival, including*:

  • Optional private in-room check-in, where guests are treated to a chilled bottle of Dom Perignon champagne accompanied by chocolate-covered strawberries
  • A complimentary full bar with six bottles of wine, premium spirits and mixers available at the guests’ disposal to craft their cocktails of choice, from morning mimosas to sunset martinis
  • Daily breakfast service served in-room at the dining table, on the Maison terrace or at the Restaurant
  • A dedicated Mercedes-Benz sedan or convertible for private use throughout the stay
  • A $200 spa credit that may be applied toward massages offered on the private terrace of the Maison or services of choice at the award-winning Auberge du Soleil Spa
  • A private guided tour of the Auberge du Soleil art collection with an art consultant from ÆRENA Gallery and Gardens
  • Preferred reservations at the Michelin-Starred Auberge du Soleil Restaurant
  • Complimentary roundtrip airport transfers via Napa Valley Tours and Transportation for guests arriving via private jet into the Napa Jet Center

A host of complimentary amenities extended to all Auberge du Soleil guests during every stay at the hotel, including self and valet parking, Wi-Fi, in-room snacks, beverages and fresh fruit, access to the adult pool, fitness center, spa soaking pools and hammam steam rooms, all with no resort fees

“A getaway to Auberge du Soleil has always been meant to convey the ultimate in Wine Country hospitality and luxury,” said Bradley Reynolds, Auberge du Soleil Managing Director. “Our goal in redesigning the Private Maisons was to elevate the overall experience with a special offering that exemplifies a premium stay at our hotel. We look forward to welcoming guests to Cannes and Monaco to enjoy our interpretation of this new level of style, comfort and service as they celebrate the best of Napa Valley.”

Wellness seekers have personal expectations and varied preferences, but most importantly they want a break from routine and a place to nourish the mind, body, and soul. Visit Temecula Valley has uncovered the 10 best wellness experiences that will kick-start or maintain travelers’ healthy lifestyles.

1. Indulging Spas
A wellness journey can begin with an immersive spa experience at Spa Pechanga. This 25,000 square foot spa is a sanctuary of luxury, wellness and serenity. Their Native American roots are inspired by the reverence for native botanicals and the strength of their Great Oak known as Wi’aasal. Therapies integrate the healing powers of nature.

Waves of Sound Massage is a popular way to relieve stress and energize through the use of a zero-gravity relaxation chair. This sensory experience lulls the mind into a deep state of inner peace and calm. Aromatic Alchemy is another unique service offered. This aromatherapy begins with a custom blend from 25 different essential oils and botanical extracts. A master therapist uses this dynamic blend in a full-body massage or body treatment.

In addition, there are hydrotherapy pools, steam rooms and saunas for relaxation both indoors and out. Panoramic views of Pu’eska Mountain, the sacred site of the Luiseño Indians, can be seen while enjoying the outdoors. Relaxation rooms for reading or enjoying light refreshments provide comfort and pampering.

GrapeSeed Spa is another recommended wellness option. Visitors stroll down the tranquility path through the vineyards to attend a private yoga class or find healing in one of their spa services that range from massage and body treatments to social spa experiences. The 17,000 square foot, three-story spa includes a heated outdoor saltwater pool, alfresco saltwater whirlpools, eucalyptus steam rooms, dry saunas, and tranquility lounges. Their Ashiatsu massage, a barefoot massage technique, is ideal for those desiring to reach deeper layers. LightStim Therapy – LED Light Therapy offers the most effective and affordable technology for achieving healthy and youthful skin. The process delivers light energy to the skin, which reduces fine lines and wrinkles. A variety of other massage, body rituals, fitness and skin care services are also available.

Each service includes a glass of pre-selected wine to be enjoyed while relaxing in a chaise lounge on the spacious veranda overlooking wine country after a day of rejuvenation. The pool area is available to all resort and spa guests. The use of the spa facilities is included with the purchase of any spa service. A Spa Day Pass (available Monday through Thursdays) provides access to the fitness facilities, spa locker room, steam room, sauna, and outdoor hot tub. GrapeSeed Spa experiences use innovative techniques, organic ingredients, and sustainable products so guests can feel good about the products interacting with their body.
