My Fave Wines From 2020: The Year When Drinking Wine Became Everyone’s Favorite Pastime

February 12, 2021 by evebushman

Lots pop into our heads when we think of 2020, and of course we aren’t out of the woods yet, or even close, so far for 2021. For me it was a windfall of wines sent for review, often accompanied by a Zoom tasting led by the winemaker. I (virtually) traveled to Germany, Spain, Argentina, France, Italy and more in those meetings and via my own cellar. And before Covid shut things down I did have quick trips to Los Olivos, Paso Robles and the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. Below is a collection of some of my favorite wines from 2020. If any of this sounds good to you, go find these wines!

It turns out that I had about 50 wine tastings, if not more, in 2020. These shout-outs are from EveWine101 website articles: the 2020 Gambero Rosso Master Class, 2017 Bordeaux presented by the Union des Grand Crus, Vega Sicilia collectors dinner with Pablo Alvarez, Fontanafredda Barolo, wine from New Zealand’s Waipapa Bay, Folded Hills Winery with winemaker Angela Osborne, California Wine STARS 2020, LA County Wines (Byron Blatty, Acri Wine Company, Angeleno Wine Company and Cavaletti Vineyards), Zoom tasting with Suzanne Phifer Pavitt and their 2012 Date Night Cabernet, Camins 2 Dreams, Gary Farrell single vineyard Pinots with winemaker Theresa Heredia, revisiting Montemar, catching up with winemaker Mark Cargasacchi and Jalama wines, also visiting Ampelos and Zotovich in Lompoc, Switchback Ridge via the Grand Reserves Reward Master Card, tasting from family-owned wineries with Dr. Laura Catena, Anne Trimbach, Laure Colombo and Alessia Collauto Travaglini, great wines that stole my palate but not my wallet from Guarachi Wine Partners, reviewing DAOU’s Soul of a Lion, Tenuta Montemagno sparkling Barbera, Castello di Fonterutoli with Giovanni Mazzei, Paul Kornell Sparkling…

In SCV Elite Magazine this year I got to write about wine tasting in Paso Robles just before the shutdown. Had exceptional experiences at Thacher Winery, Tablas Creek Vineyard, Derby Wine Estates, Steinbeck Wines, Cass Wines, Eberle Winery, Oso Libre Winery, HammerSky vineyards and the Allegretto Vineyard Resort.

January started out great with my first, and last, visit and dinner at Marstons with my VP/BFF Michael Perlis, our wonderful spouses, all over lots of wine ($10 corkage!) including 2013 Audacious Grenache/Syrah/Cab blend by Law Estate, 2013 Comstock Rockpile/Sonoma County Zinfandel, 2009 Regusci Zinfandel Napa Valley…

At Wine 661: Lucas And Lewellen tasting where we sampled five of their Santa Barbara County wines, including a Rose of Pinot and a Bordeaux blend. Had a couple of wines off of the Happy Hour menu. This was not the last time I went to Wine 661 in 2020…

Now some single bottle shout outs:

Vinos Zanzonico 2017 Syrah Reserva: 100% Syrah, 13.5% alcohol, from the Valle de la Grulla area of Baja. With a regal dark purple color, I was drawn in to fantastic aromas of sweet black cherry, plum, tri-color peppercorns, layers of rich bark, milk chocolate…all very welcoming. I went in for a taste and was rewarded with a very rich and layered mouthfeel, with dark and dry blue to black fruit, grilled mushrooms, peppery spicy goodness and tannins that held my back palate at attention for a length that just would…not…quit. 99 Eve points.

2014 Old Vine Zichichi Family Vineyard Zinfandel from the Dry Creek Valley: The 14.8% alcohol didn’t translate at all to a hot wine on the palate, instead it delivered incredible substance. It started with a nose full of sweet dark plums, pipe tobacco, black licorice, toasted oak, black pepper and popcorn kernel. Going in for a taste my mouth was filled with delicious dried blueberry and blackberry, that same black pepper, tannins that held firm, and a great balance of the dark fruit and tannins to keep it lingering a long time on the palate. This was a new Zin discovery for me, will definitely be looking for it again!

Entourage by Two Papas Wine barrel fermented (1) and stainless steel (2) 2019 Chardonnay, Thompson Vineyard, Santa Barbara County: 1. Barrel: Designated by a gold wax top (the stainless has a silver wax top) I was amazed that this was a young 2019 vintage! It had lovely notes of creamy butter, pineapple, golden delicious apple and popcorn kernel that morphed into caramel apple on the palate, mild acidity, with a long, balanced and lush finish. 2. No barrel: Our stainless sibling gave off nicely scented whiffs of Meyer lemon, both cantaloupe and honeydew melon, and a little unsalted butter. When I tasted the wine I got homemade fruit cocktail, wet pebbles, low acidity and a medium finish.

2018 Kindred Rose of Pinot Noir: The color of rose gold, complete with sparkles! Then on the nose I found pink grapefruit, lemon pith, French Toast, Creme Brûlée, and Mandarin orange = all very inviting! In for a taste next, there is a very round mouthfeel, and the same citrus fruits I found on the nose – grapefruit, lemon and orange – with a medium acidity. Enjoy now, with or without food IMO!

2015 Phifer Pavitt XRoads Cabernet Sauvignon: Crushed dark cherry, wet forest floor, grilled steak and mushrooms, dark chocolate, black licorice, pipe tobacco, toasted oak, a hint of sweet cream and more all on the nose. Flavors included that same black cherry as well as blackberry, blueberry, a gamut of spices, velvety and firm drying tannins that of course require that you go back in for another sip…and another.

2012 Regusci Patriarch Proprietary Red: aroma: dark berries, dried leaves, figs, toasted oak and a bit o’ mint. Some of the same aromas in the flavors with the addition of dark chocolate.

2001 Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia, a Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont…I  looked for the roses, tar, licorice and red berries (notes from a professional critic) and also found tart berries, spice and tannins after decanting for 7 hours. So interesting.

Have you tried Guentota, aka the “Soul of Cuyo”, a “100-YR-OLD-VINE PREMIUM 2016 MALBEC” from Mendoza, Argentina? It’s from Belasco De Baqueano and was awarded 91 points from James Suckling. And I was far too busy lapping it up to make any tasting notes. But find it at Newhall Press Room. (Truth be told I had a LOT of wine from Newhall Press in 2020!)

2002 Joseph Phelps Insignia, I have no notes as I was also too busy drinking to take any. A stellar wine as it’s been proven vintage after vintage.

1999 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo: The nose and taste had really changed and mellowed over the 7 hours, with aromas of dried dark fruit, grilled mushroom, balsamic, dust and oak; on the palate I got both bright and dark fruit in a very fine balance.

From my local Pulchella Winery we had: Suspect sparkling wine, 2019 Latitude Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier blend, 2017 Mercenary Zinfandel blend, 2018 Witness Grenache…among others!

A note on Los Olivos: this was a non-press trip so no notes were taken. With that in mind we loved: Barbieri and Kempe are “Boutique wines made by Master Sommelier Paolo Barbieri” along with his wife Erin Kempe = bought a case! The second, Bella Cavailli Farms and Vineyard, produces some amazing wines against a backdrop of a working horse ranch, as well as some fun distilled spirits from Dorwood Distillery. Jeff Lockwood is the winemaker and his brother Jay the head distiller. We left there with both wine and spirts to enjoy at home.

A note from Wine on the Porch: During the summer months we enjoyed Hanzell Chardonnay, Saintsbury Chardonnay, Parhelion Cellars Light Pillar Chardonnay, St Supery Virtu Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc blend, Pagter Brothers 2018 Viognier, and from Hoi Polloi I snatched up their 2018 Rose of Grenache and Double-Gold Best-Of-Class 2018 Chardonnay!

A note about spirits: Yea, I wrote a lot about spirits this year too, stay tuned for a roundup of those next!

Preview of Paso Robles 2020

January 17, 2020 by evebushman

We are planning a trip to Paso Robles early this year – we try and do Paso and Napa every year – although in past years it wasn’t possible due to our work schedules. This year first we will visit D.C. and then Paso, Kentucky, Italy, Greece and Turkey. This will probably be the norm for us, lots of travel, now that Eddie has retired.

Cass winery pic from Facebook, I believe Ted is on the left wearing the hat and raising his glass.

So, getting back to Paso, I wanted to share information about some of the wineries we will be visiting. And because we do go wine tasting often, the last few years we have tried to go to wineries that we have not visited with too many times – or not at all – before. (There are so many now we all really should reach a little further IMO.) However, with that said, there are two below that we have visited before, but not for a few years. Which of these have you been to, which would you re-visit and which are new for you as well:

Thacher Winery

Hadn’t heard of Thacher until I was emailing Tony Quealy at a different winery and learned that he had moved over to Thacher. Did a little research on the winery, Google and social media, and liked what I saw. So instead of seeing Quealy at his old spot we would visit him at his new spot. They are described as a “boutique” winery, with an emphasis on two of my favorites: Rhone blends and Zinfandel.

Tablas Creek Vineyard

Sampled lots of Rhônes from Tablas Creek at wine events over the years. All I knew about them is that they make a lot. And they’re all good. Sent them an email about visiting and they were happy to oblige, with none other than Jason Haas, partner and GM, to show us around. From Facebook I learned, “Founded by the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands in the limestone hills of Paso Robles’ Adelaida District, it produces estate grown Châteauneuf du Pape-style blends and Rhone varietal wines from its certified organic and Biodynamic vineyards.”

Steinbeck Wines

Cindy Steinbeck, one daughter of owners Howie and Bev Steinbeck, had offered one of their noted “CRASH COURSE tours through the family’s expansive vineyards giving (us) an opportunity to really know the family and experience wine from the vineyard.” From their website I learned that Steinbeck “is a boutique family owned and operated winery in the heart of California’s Central Coast, Paso Robles” and that their “family has been farming for seven-generations, since 1884. (Their) ancestors were pioneers in many aspects of farming in Paso Robles, including wine grapes and wine 135 years ago…” Howie himself is known as “a leader in viticulture in Paso Robles since 1970.”

Cass Wines

Been to more than one event, and dinner, where Cass co-owner Ted Plemons poured. Plemons is one of those memorable wine personalities that make the wine tasting experience a whole lot of fun. At a recent #SaugusStrong fundraiser at our local Wine 661 wine bar, I won a luncheon for four at the winery. Planned my trip around it. Hoping for a Plemons sighting, but happy at the prospect of having the lunch – heard a lot about the great lunches there – and tasting through their current line-up of Rhônes and Bordeaux blends.

Eberle Winery

Ben Mayo was the winemaker at Eberle when I last visited, that was 2011 (Read about our “Underground Eberle Tour” here) and a person in my party voted for a re-visit. Fast forward to more local news, founder Gary Eberle being ousted from the winery, then regained ownership, and of course their long-standing respected wines. When Gary was copied on an email to me from the winery, I mentioned we’d love even just a “sighting” or “photo op” if he’s available. This wine-fan-girl does get a wee bit excited about meeting the people that have shaped our wine industry. Time will tell if it happens! Asked what I would like to focus on for the tasting I suggested Zinfandel, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and they also offered a tasting of “something from the library.”

Allegretto Wines and Vineyard Resort by Ayres

I knew the Allegretto name from visiting their grand hotel soon after it opened for a Cab Collective event weekend. This time I would be staying in one of the rooms, for two nights, so I knew I’d be getting a bigger and better insiders “feel” of the place. Additionally, I had met and tasted with Quin Cody, the Director of Wine Hospitality, at a recent STARS of Cab event put on by Ian Blackburn and WineLA.com – the wines were great, two Cabs and a Malbec, but I needed to taste more. During our visit we would have “an art tour followed by wine and charcuterie tasting in the Willow Creek tasting room.”

HammerSky Vineyards

A few years back we stayed in a lovely farmhouse on the HammerSky property. I was smitten the property, the wines and with owner Doug Hauck, and I think you can tell from my article that ran back in 2014, The Secret Weapons at HammerSky. I’ve been wanting to get back ever since as we tasted just a few wines then, and there are plenty more in the tasting room that we hadn’t visited. This is what we missed that we won’t miss this time, “Our ultra-modern tasting room offers award-winning Bordeaux wines, hospitality and comfort for all who visit. Tall windows and glass doors emit natural light, while allowing sweeping 180 degree views of our rolling vineyards that border the lawn with café-style seating on the patio. It has been referred to as the best picnic location in Paso Robles wine country.”

https://www.hammersky.com/

https://www.facebook.com/Hammerskyvineyards/

Oso Libre Winery

I had originally tasted Oso Libre wines in 2016, via the LA Wine Writers. In fact, I couldn’t attend the tasting with everyone else and the winery generously offered to send wines for my review. I re-posted the review last year, and the winery commented on the Facebook link that I needed a re-visit. This is the article link —> http://evewine101.com/2019/09/10/vintage-eve-circa-9-2016-a-trio-to-taste-from-pasos-oso-libre/   I decided I needed a real “live” visit, and now look forward to trying their current wines that may include a Dry Riesling, Rose of Mourvedre, Chardonnay, Primitivo, Zinfandel, Bordeaux blends and GSMs…

Vintage Eve Circa 6/2016: Can’t Get Enough…STARS of California Part Two

July 30, 2019 by evebushman

This is a continuation from my story last week, and we had left off tasting some stellar Stars of California vintages at a WineLA.com tasting event. This is the slideshow for those that want to skip ahead.

The Pour List (continued) at Press Time, my notes are in italics:

MIURA VINEYARDS
Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir, St. Lucia Highlands 2012
Pinot Noir, St. Lucia Highlands 2014
Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 2013
Antiqvs Syrah, Garys Vineyard, St. Lucia Highlands 2009

NEAL FAMILY
Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012
2015 Sauvignon Blanc, Howell Mountain, Napa 2015
Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford Dust Vineyards 2006
Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain, Napa 2007

PAX MAHLE WINES
‘The Hermit’ Pax Syrah, North Coast 2013
Grenache, James Berry Vineyard, 2012
Syrah, Castelli-Knight Ranch, Russian River 2011
Loved The Hermit for its dainty floral finish, unexpected for me in a Syrah, and the Castelli-Knight Ranch Syrah for its earthiness.

POMAR JUNCTION
Viognier, Paso Robles 2015
Cotes De Pomar Blanc, Paso Robles 2015
GSM, Paso Robles 2013
Merlot, Paso Robles 2013

ROUND POND ESTATE
Sauvignon Blanc, Rutherford 2015
‘Kith and Kin’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2014
Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford Estate 2013

Another fave I had already tasted recently. Especially the Kith and Kin that was gifted to me by a fellow wine lover.

RUED WINES
Pinot Noir, Russian River 2012
Zinfandel, Dry Creek 2013
Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Creek 2015
Chardonnay, Russian River 2015

TOLOSA
Rosé of Pinot Noir, Tolosa Vineyards, Edna Valley 2014
‘Pure’ Chardonnay, Tolosa Vineyards, Edna Valley 2014
‘1772’ Pinot Noir, Tolosa Vineyards, Edna Valley 2014
‘Marley Anne’ Pinot Noir, Tolosa Vineyards, Edna Valley 2014

VINEMARK CELLARS
Primitivo, Paso Robles 2013
‘Mezzanotte’ Red Blend, Paso Robles 2013
Cabernet Franc, Paso Robles 2013
Buona Miscela, Paso Robles 2014

A favorite from my judging stint for the Long Beach Grand Cru. A 2013 Petite Sirah was an add-in and simply awesome, as well as a 2014 Port-style Petite Sirah. The showstopper was the Buona Miscela Sangiovese from Monterey – look for that one too.

WESTERLY WINES
Bentrock Chardonnay, Santa Barbara 2014
Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 2012
Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Barbara 2012
Côte Blonde, Santa Barbara 2012

I’ve only tasted Westerly wines once before, at Pour d’Vino in Lancaster, this time I became a fan of their Cab (Santa Barbara!) and Côte Blonde, which is a Syrah with a little Viognier.

WORKMAN/AYER
“De Facto” Red Wine, Central Coast 2012
“Ipso Facto” Viognier, Central Coast 2014

Wonderful reconnecting with Michel Ayer – first met and tasted with this cool winemaker at a Garagiste event in Union Station – his wines are always so wonderfully balanced. This time the Viognier was lovely, no high acid to take over, just brilliant fruit that had benefitted by stainless steel and no malolactic fermentation. The Red blend was all chocolate and violet. Need to order both.

YATES FAMILY
Viognier, Mount Veeder 2014
‘Fleur de Veeder’ Merlot, Mount Veeder 2013
‘Cheval’ Cabernet Franc, Mount Veeder 2013
‘Alden Perry Reserve’ Red Blend, Mount Veeder 2012

Paso Robles CAB Collective

I have to admit that this was my all-time favorite table. Love that the Cab Collective members sent their best bottles for sampling.

Adelaida
Viking Red Wine 2013 – Quite well done, liked the dry finish.

Ancient Peaks
Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Calcareous
Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 – Lots of chocolate layers to enjoy.

Cass
Signature Cabernet 2013

Chateau Margene
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2013 – I had met Michael Mooney a few years back, and then again when the Cab Collective had just begun. He impressed me when he showed a map of where he sourced his grapes – throughout many sub-AVAs of Paso – and at this tasting I learned, from his son Jon, that they have removed some old vineyards and planted their own. So soon we will be seeing a Chateau Margene Estate wine. The Cab today was perfectly balanced, with nice dark notes on the back palate for the finish.

DAOU
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2013 – Who isn’t a fan of DAOU? This reserve Cab was all tobacco, dark and dry and good to go.

Eberle
Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2013

J Lohr
Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2013 – Thanks again for another great Hilltop Cab! Bringing on the spice and the fruit, I was ready!

San Antonio
San Simeon Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2012

Sextant
Kamal, Paso Robles 2013 – a very well done Paso blend.

The Farm Winery
LPF 2012

Vina Robles
Suendero 2012 – Big, just the way I like it, thanks again to winemaker Kevin Willenborg.

Monterey County Vintners & Growers Association

I skipped this section as I had been to Carmel tasting not too long ago.

Blair Estate
Chardonnay, Delfina’s Vineyard, Arroyo Seco 2013
Rose of Pinot Noir, Delfina’s Vineyard, Arroyo Seco 2014
Pinot Noir, Delfina’s Vineyard, Arroyo Seco 2012

Vintage Eve Circa 6/2016: Can’t Get Enough…STARS of California Part One

July 23, 2019 by evebushman

This time wine-expectant palates would sample over 100 wines from 40 wineries – and grow a knowledge of our varied California terroir – courtesy Ian Blackburn of WineLA.com in yet another “STARS” event. As you should’ve guessed, it was Stars of California, once again at The Peninsula Beverly Hills.

And, as some of these participants (listed below) were familiar to me from other tasting events in the last six months, which I have written about, this tasting I only tasted new vintages from those same sources, and a few wineries I was unfamiliar with. My likes and brief tasting notes are below under “Pour List” in italics. (And for my pals with a short attention span, of course I created a slideshow of the event.

The Pour List at Press Time:

ADOBE ROAD
Redline Cabernet Blend, Sonoma County 2012
Chardonnay, Bacigalupi Vineyard, Russian River Valley 2014
Cabernet Franc, Bavarian Lion Vineyard, Knights Valley 2014
Cabernet Sauvignon, Beckstoffer Georges the III, Napa Valley 2012

ALMA ROSA
Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 2013
‘Clone 667’ Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 2013
Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County 2014
Chardonnay, El Jabali Vineyard 2014

Always a pleasure to taste with winemaker Richard Sanford. His Pinot Noirs are continually well done, and along with Clos Pepe, really set the bar nice and high for Pinot in Sta. Rita Hills. This time I enjoyed the 2013 Pinot Noir and a 2014 Pinot Gris.

ANCIENT PEAKS WINERY
Sauvignon Blanc, Margarita Vineyard, Paso Robles 2014
Cabernet Sauvignon, Margarita Vineyard, Paso Robles 2014
Merlot, Margarita Vineyard, Paso Robles 2013
Renegade, Margarita Vineyard, Paso Robles 2013
Oyster Ridge, Margarita Vineyard, Paso Robles 2013
Loved the lemon and white peach in this Sauv Blanc, the Oyster Ridge Cab blend, the Renegade Syrah and the big, dry yet balanced 2013 Zin they also poured.

ARCHIUM CELLARS
Rose of Grenache 2015 – Watch Hill Vineyard, Los Alamos
“Dissident” GSM, Stolpman and Watch Hill Vineyards, Santa Barbara 2014
“Faction” Syrah, Stolpman Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley, Ballard Canyon 2014
“Haven” Grenache, Stolpman Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley, Ballard Canyon 2014

Every darn wine in this line-up made me smile. The Grenache was one I noted as an easy drinker, which translates to Drink Now.

BEEKEEPER CELLARS
Zinfandel, Madrone Spring Vineyard, Rockpile 2013
Zinfandel, Montecillo Vineyard, Sonoma Valley 2014

This is Ian’s wine, I have it every time, don’t miss it when you see it.

BERNARDUS WINERY
Pinot Noir, Pisoni Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands 2013
Pinot Noir, Rosella’s Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands 2013
Pinot Noir, Gary’s Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands 2013
Rose of Pinot Noir SLH 2014

If you are ever in Carmel Valley, visit this winery.

BOUGETZ CELLARS
Sauvignon Blanc, Rutherford 2014
Pinot Noir, Catie’s Corner Vineyard 2014

‘SLH’ Chardonnay, St. Lucia Highlands 2014
‘SLH’ Pinot Noir, St. Lucia Highlands 2014
Pinot Noir, Lucienne Lone Oak Vineyard 2013
Pinot Noir, Lucienne Smith Vineyard 2013

Had the SLH (new label designation for Santa Lucia Highlands, much like Ballard Canyon’s new embossed bottle – both designed to help separate AVAs from the pack) Pinot Noir in my American Wine Cert class (yes I passed) and became an instant fan. This time I tried the Lucienne label and rejoiced in loving both that were shared. I found the Lone Oak slightly more delicate than the more traditional Smith vineyard.

HAWK AND HORSE
Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Hills, Lake County 2011
‘Block Three’ (95% Cab & 5% Petit Verdot), Red Hills, Lake County 2011
‘Latigo’ Cabernet Sauvignon fortified Port style Dessert Wine, Red Hills, Lake County 2011

I was introduced to Hawk and Horse when they sent me a “diamond” along with wines to sample. The marketing (diamond) caught my attention, as did the wines I was sent for review. I was happy to try the 2011 Cab and the Block Three red blend. These wines, both 2011 vintages, were just released. Love a wine that has spent a little more time in barrel and oak to suit the winemaker’s desired results.

HOYT FAMILY
Chardonnay, Santa Barbara 2014
Pinot Grigio, California 2013
Cabernet, Paso Robles 2012
Petite Sirah, Paso Robles 2012

Originally tasting Hoyt in a now defunct wine tasting room in Malibu, I was happy to see them at Ian’s event. Loved the Cab, Petite Sirah and a 2011 Tempranillo – all draped in medals.

L’AVENTURE WINERY
‘Optimus Estate’ Red Blend, Paso Robles 2013
Côte à Côte, Paso Robles 2013
Estate Cuvée, Paso Robles 2013

Always a treat when winemaker Stephan Asseo and/or L’Aventure comes out to any event. None of his wines ever disappoint my Rhône-driven palate. And this time, the Estate Cuvee made me pause; a smoky wine with rapturous balance. As I noticed every other taster at his table fail to pour out, I was so jealous to have to be working.

Read Part 2 here next week! I will begin with the rest of this list and finish with what we tasted from the Paso Robles Cab Collective.

One Bottle Post: Workman Ayer 2013 “de facto”

December 2, 2016 by evebushman

I’m a Rhône fan, but I’m also a Bordeaux/Zin/whatever is great fan. Point is that if asked I have a hard time picking just one wine as a favorite. Depends on where I happen to be, what’s on my plate and whose company I might be enjoying. So, in a nutshell, it depends on my collective mood. And the day I met Michel Ayer I was in a really good mood. Then again, every time since then my mood has only improved – by his Rhônes, all two of them. (What is a Rhône? A quick lesson can be had via the Rhone Rangers website: http://rhonerangers.org/)

img_8262Michel makes a white Rhône, a 100% Viognier; and a red Rhône, a Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre blend.

Catching up with Michel Ayer

Before the tasting I reached out to Michel to ask him what was new and what the future holds for him.

No particular challenges in the vineyards in 2013 despite continued drought conditions. Real challenges begin with 2015 and yields being down and therefore fruit prices being up. As for the future, hope to get over to California in January to pour at wineLA’s Stars of Santa Barbara in both Orange County and Beverly Hills, but have yet to solidify that plan. Am also working to expand production on our existing two wines as well as explore adding a Grenache dominant blend and a white Rhône blend (both initially likely only via mailing list).

Today’s Tasting

Workman Ayer 2013 “de facto” red wine, Central Coast

Syrah Grenache Mourvedre (aka GSM blend)

Aromas of black cherry, plum, red roses and a hint of black licorice and black olives.

Flavors included ripe and rich black fruit, green peppercorn, cigar, charred steak, that same hint of black olive and firm tannins. 90 Eve pts. at the first taste, 91 Eve pts. After 10 minutes in my glass. Other scores include: 91 from The Corkscrewer Report, 89 Wine Enthusiast magazine, and 88 from Connoisseurs’ Guide.

Tech Sheet

Vintage

2013 was a warm, dry growing season. In every single month from March through November, valley temperatures were above the historical average and precipitation was below. Thankfully, the rest of the growing season was fairly problem free – no massive heat spikes and less frost problems than normal resulting in a large, but high quality harvest – despite the drought conditions.

Vineyards

30% Los Alamos Syrah, 25% Ballard Canyon Syrah, 25% Santa Ynez Valley Syrah, 10% Los Alamos Grenache, .10% Los Alamos Mourvedre. Production: 100 cases 750 ml.

Winemaking

The bulk of the Syrah was from Los Alamos and was its typical self – big, fat, chewy, smoky. The Ballard Canyon Syrah was off the charts good with nice oak. Then there was some Santa Ynez Valley Syrah.  We used two lots – the first pick and the last pick.  The first pick was zingy and perfumy, which added a great backbone to the blend.  The last pick was dark and brooding, but still nice aromas.  It was a nice balance of the two. The Mourvedre was a bit tannic and structured, which was a nice addition. The Grenache was little softer than normal, but loads of nice strawberry. The blend was aged in approximately 40% new French oak for 20 months.

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes

Bright, fresh aromas of strawberry, white pepper, anise, smoked meat, caramel and kirsch.  Broad, expansive and mouthwatering on the palate, with flavors of sweet raspberry, strawberry, tart plum, earth and semi-sweet chocolate.  Very long finish with continuing bright, fresh fruit and rich tannins.  Remarkably forward now, but also deep and structured.  The ol’ iron fist in a velvet glove!

Perlis Picks: STARS of California

June 13, 2015 by evebushman

Ian Blackburn has been teaching all of us about wine for the last 20 years. First with Learn About Wine and now with Wine LA, he has been teaching classes and putting on events which have been instrumental in turning a lot of wine drinkers into wine lovers.

His “Stars of…” events are legendary and for me the highlight of these is the Stars of California, recently held at the Peninsula hotel in Beverly Hills.

Now there are certainly far too many great wineries in California for all of them to be in attendance, but Ian did his usual great job of putting together a selection to highlight what makes California wine so great. The list of wineries reads like a veritable who’s-who of superstars.

What a list!

Ian Blackburn, STARS of CA 2015

As with almost any event, you can’t taste everything. Of what my wife Karen and I tried, here’s what we liked the best…

Modus Operandi Cellars

I haven’t written about Jason Moore’s wines in some time. I first tasted this Napa Valley winemaker’s wines when visiting Silenus Cellars a few years ago. I really enjoyed his “Vicarious” blend and Cabernet Sauvignon, both from the 2012 vintage.

Jeff Cohn Cellars

Formerly known as JC Cellars, to me this winery does not get nearly enough attention. Jeff is making great wines in the Oakland/Alameda area, sourcing excellent fruit from various outstanding California vineyards. All four wines being poured this evening were delicious: The Imposter Zinfandel Blend, Rockpile Syrah, Botticelli Zinfandel and Misc Stuff [GSM Blend], all also from the 2012 vintage.

Law Estate

What can I say about this Paso Robles winery that I haven’t already said? They came out of the box swinging with their 2010 vintage and really brought it home bigtime with the 2011s. Being poured were the 2011 Intrepid [Syrah] and the Sagacious [Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache], all that is left from the 2011 vintage. The 2012s will be out this fall – don’t miss them!

Oakville Ranch Winery

I was excited to find this new-to-me Napa winery. Although the name may seem nondescript, the wines definitely weren’t. The 2012 Field Blend, 2011 Robert’s Cabernet Franc and 2012 Oakville Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon are all worth seeking out.

Robert Biale Vineyards

I’ve been a fan [and club member] of this Napa “zin house” for many years. Their Black Chicken Zinfandel and R.W. Moore Zinfandel both tasted great. And lest you think they are only about zin, they are doing what they can to put Petite Sirah back on the map. Being poured was the Royal Punishers Petite Sirah [ask me to explain the name sometime] – always one of my favorite “pets” and this was no exception. All three of these wines were from the 2013 vintage.

Valdez Family Winery

Based in Sonoma, this winery not only makes great wine, but there is a wonderful story behind the winery. Owner/winemaker Ulises Valdez came to the U.S. from Mexico to work in the fields and is now a respected vineyard manager as well as an excellent winemaker. The 2011 St. Peter’s Church Zinfandel and the 2009 Silver Eagle Syrah were both excellent.

Clos Solene

It amazes me how Guillaume Fabre continues to make such beautiful elegant wines at his small Paso Robles winery. All three wines he was pouring were amazing and worth finding: 2014 Hommage Blanc [blend of Roussanne and Viognier], 2013 Harmonie [Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre] and 2013 Hommage A Nos Pairs [mainly Syrah with a little Grenache and Roussanne].

Epoch Estate Wines

Continuing the Paso Robles theme, it is hard to find better wines there [or anywhere] than at Epoch. The 2013 Grenache Blanc, 2011 Ingenuity [Syrah blend] and 2012 Veracity [Grenache blend] were all showing very well. And in case you needed another reason to visit, they have finally moved winemaking operations into their new state-of-the-art winery.

Beekeeper Cellars

Ian Blackburn does more than teach us about wine. His Beekeeper Cellars produces some really tasty zinfandel. Both the 2011 Rockpile Zin and the 2012 Howell Mountain Zin are tasting great, showing delicious bold fruit without being overpowering.

Kosta Browne Winery

Kosta Browne participated in the pre-event VIP dinner, allowing us to enjoy their wonderful 2013 One Sixteen Chardonnay and 2012 Cirq Treehouse Pinot Noir.

Speaking of the VIP dinner, I highly recommend that, if you are attending an event of this magnitude, you spring for the VIP experience. Great food, special wines and early entrance to the tasting make the extra cost well worth it.

Kudos to Ian and his team for putting on another great event. And the setting at the Peninsula as well as the silent auction raising money for the TJ Martell Foundation just made it that much better.

About wineLA:
wineLA is about enhancing the wine culture of Los Angeles. To do so, wine must be in rhythm with fashion, music, food and other beverages. It must take advantage of the geography, the architecture and the centers of interest. Los Angeles is a giant playground with an amazing array of venues, spaces, wine bars, restaurants, beaches, roof tops, gardens, and magical views. We want to be a part of the LA lifestyle, the wine lifestyle, and celebrate the people, the place and the passion.

wineLA hosts significant events, occasional classes, and tastings of merit. This is phase two of what we started 20 years ago at LearnAboutWine.com – America’s first wine education website and first in wine event creation.
