The Murphy family’s efforts have established Presqu’ile as one of the Santa Maria Valley’s defining wineries, recognized for making balanced and sophisticated cool-climate wines. From directing the planting of the Presqu’ile Vineyard to overseeing the design and construction of the state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery, shaping the elegant stylistic identity of the winery’s Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, to shaping the tasting experience, the Murphys’ collective vision has established Presqu’ile as one of California’s leading wineries. And thanks to USA TODAY it is now a must stop on anyone’s wine-bucket list.

ABOUT PRESQU’ILE WINERY:

Located in the heart of Santa Barbara County’s Santa Maria Valley, Presqu’ile (pronounced press-KEEL) is a small, family-run winery dedicated to making exceptional cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Presqu’ile is a multigenerational collaboration between Madison and Suzanne Murphy, their three adult children, Matt, Anna and Jonathan, and their daughters-in-law, Amanda and Lindsey. No strangers to agriculture, four generations of the wine-loving Murphy family have been farming land in Louisiana for almost a century. Led by eldest son Matt Murphy, the family founded Presqu’ile—the Creole word for “almost an island”—both as a tribute to a beloved Gulf Coast family gathering place that was lost in Hurricane Katrina, and because they envisioned Presqu’ile as an island-like haven amid the vines. Also on the team is rising star winemaker Dieter Cronje.

The Santa Maria Valley is one of the most distinctive winegrowing appellations in the world.

With one of the longest growing seasons in all of California. The Santa Maria Valley is a true cool-climate winegrowing region, yielding wines of extraordinary elegance and purity—qualities that define the world’s best Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.

To preserve the complexity of these grapes, the Murphys worked with acclaimed San Francisco-based Taylor Lombardo Architects to create a gravity-flow winery designed to Matt and Dieter’s specifications. And to ensure that each wine reflects its vineyard, Dieter practices a naturally minimalist approach to winemaking, with a focus on whole clusters, native yeasts and modest new oak. As a result, Presqu’ile’s wines are pure and purposeful, conveying the authentic charm, complexity and signature Santa Maria spice that have made the wines of the Santa Maria Valley famous among enthusiasts of elegant and balanced wines. In addition to being featured by USA TODAY,  Presqu’ile Winery has received accolades in numerous publications including Vinous; Santa Barbara News-Press; The Daily Meal; Santa Barbara Independent’s “Tastings To Do;” Condé Nast Traveler’s “Beautiful Wineries in California;” Must Do Travel Show and the Travel Channel.

Hengshui Laobaigan is the First Chinese Liquor to Win the Global Spirit Awards

September 17, 2018 by evebushman

NEW YORK (PRWEB) – The Chinese baijiu, Hengshui Laobaigan received top honors at the recent Global Spirit Awards Competition held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Judges for the competition sampled the world’s best liquors from several categories including vodka, tequila, rum, bourbon, scotch whisky, liqueur and Chinese liquor. The Laobaigan 1915 was awarded the prestigious Best in Category award. In addition, The Laobaigan 5 Star and Laobaigan 1915 were each named Double Gold Winners by the panel of judges.

The jury for the 2018 Global Spirit Awards Competition was comprised of 18 experienced spirits masters with a strong background in spirits production and bartending. They included Steve Beal, founder of the San Francisco world spirits contest and one of America’s top distilling experts.

The judging process for the specialty spirit categories began with a double-blind tasting preliminary round, with the best spirits advancing to the Sweepstakes Rounds, where the Double Gold and The Best of Show Categories were awarded.

Americans can be hesitant to try Chinese baijiu (the term, “baijiu” means “clear liquor”) due to its exotic taste. As far back as 1915, Hengshui Laobaigan won the Panama World Exposition top prize and marked the product’s entrance into the US market. Today’s multiple prizes from the Global Spirits Awards continues the tradition of Hengshui Laobaigan’s baijiu earning recognition and respect from western judges.

The Secret of Hengshui Laobaigan’s Brewing: The Mysterious Underground Urn
There are many types of Chinese liquor, which can be challenging for the uninitiated. In China, baijiu is often used to accompany meals and is paired to match the taste of Chinese food. Most Chinese baijiu have a strong and distinct flavor, which can cause many American drinkers to choose more familiar liquors.

But the fact that Hengshui Laobaigan 1915 was recognized by the Global Spirit Awards suggests that not all Chinese spirits are the same. The liquor’s distinct taste is known as “Lao Bai Gan Xiang Xing,” which comes from its unique underground Urn brewing method.

Unlike the western custom of using oak barrels or sherry barrels for storage, Hengshui Laobaigan produces their liquors in ceramic tanks buried in the ground.

A study from the China Academy of Food and Fermentation showed that Hengshui Laobaigan’s dry ground cylinder fermentation process can effectively isolate impurities and harmful microbial pollution, the impurity content is less than one-tenth of China’s national standard, creating a more mellow and clean flavor.

The process, which has been used for thousands of years, produces a great tasting liquor without a needlessly high alcohol content.

Chinese scientists have also conducted microbiological research on the Laobaigan underground cylinder brewing technology. The Microorganism and Applied Enzyme Laboratory of Jiangnan University collaborated with Hengshui Laobaigan to produce a study entitled, “Environmental Microbiota Drives Microbial Processes and Metabolic Profiles for Chinese Liquor” published by Dr. Xueshan Wang. The study was selected as the cover article by Applied and Environmental Microbiology, an authoritative publication founded by the American Society for Microbiology.

This Mystery Liquor Conquered America a Hundred Years Ago
In 1915, The 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition Was Held In San Francisco. Hengshui Laobaigan’s Predecessor, Zhili Kaoliang Liquor, was submitted to the panel of judges. With its mellow and sweet taste and transparent color, Zhili Kaoliang won the “First Class Medallion” of the Panama Pacific International Exposition.

To commemorate this milestone in the company’s history, the manufacturer introduced “Laobaigan 1915” to the marketplace. The product’s recent award at the Global Spirit Awards proves that Chinese liquor can be adapted to American tastes.

Today, with western liquors such as whiskey and vodka consumed within the Chinese market, the makers of Laobaigan seek to foster a reciprocal appreciation for Chinese baijiu. With its award-wining taste and thousand-year history, Laobaigan deserves a place in every American liquor cabinet.

USA and China drive the world’s wine market, along with a global love of bubbles

March 25, 2018 by evebushman

Bordeaux – The upturn in the value of world wine consumption is set for a record global market value of $224.5 billion by 2021, forecasts Vinexpo/IWSR in its annual forecasts for the wine and spirits sectors.

A  comparison  of the  ten years  from 2011 to 2021 shows  that  the  value of the world  wine  market will grow 40% to reach volume sales of 2.66 billion 9-litre cases. Driving the recovery are the USA and China, the world’s two most powerful economies, whose joint growth in wine consumption offsets declines elsewhere, notably in Europe.

Over the next five years, China will become the world’s second largest market for grape wine behind world leader, the USA. Chinese consumption is expected to rise by over one third to $23 billion over the next five years when it will reach volume of 192 million cases. By comparison, in 2016 a volume leap of 8 million cases pushed the value of the Chinese wine market to $15.24 billion (growth driven almost exclusively by still wine).

The USA, the world’s most valuable wine market worth more than $36 billion in 2017, is poised to grow over 25% in the run up to 2021, reaching more than $45 billion.

A number of other factors for growth range from a global love of sparkling wine, a clear global trend towards premium brands, and strong sales of whiskey.

Sparkling wine is forecast to grow by an average 2% year-on-year to 2021, driven predominantly by North America, but also showing strong growth in the UK and Asia-Pacific countries such as Australia, Japan. Those two countries helped to push sparkling wine in Asia-Pacific to a total value of .

79 billion in 2016 for 9 million cases. By 2012 that figure is forecast to rise to $3.73 billion (15.8 million cases).

Prosecco  will  outstrip  other  major  categories  such as  Champagne and  Cava by 2021 when  world  Prosecco  consumption is  set  to reach  40 million cases. In the UK, the world’s largest sparkling wine importer, Prosecco is an outstanding success. Nonetheless, the USA is expected to show the most growth in consumption of Prosecco by 2021, while remaining number two behind the UK.

Champagne’s shift in focus from Europe to emerging markets looks set to accelerate. Europe’s share of global Champagne volume is forecast to have decreased by 4 percentage-points by 2021, from 80% recorded in 2016.

In keeping with the trend to “drink less but better” premium wines are forecast to drive global still wine consumption. The premium segment – wines selling for between $10 and $20 – is forecast to grow by over 60 million cases during this period. Standard brands ($5-$9.99) will grow just short of 32m cases, and super-premium-plus just short of 5 million cases. The biggest losses will fall below $5, where the global category is expected to lose 75 million cases.

In spirits, too, premium price points are generally performing better than value, with mainstream standard brands developing at a healthy rate.

Whisky is expected to perform particularly well, especially Scotch and US whiskey, and to a lesser degree gin and tequila. This development broadly reflects the premiumisation trend with premium-and-above segments growing the fastest. The US and China will drive global growth of  premium-and-above  spirits.  Combined,  they  are  expected to  add  30 million cases in  these price segments,  compared to a net gain of  46 million cases globally.

Meanwhile, the power of the Asia-Pacific region and the role of Hong Kong as a major business hub is highlighted by projected regional growth over the next five years from $29 billion in 2016 to $40.8 billion by 2021.

Guillaume Deglise, CEO of Vinexpo commented, “Since Vinexpo began tracking world data so many years ago we have witnessed the remarkable rise of the Asia Pacific region and its massive contribution to growth of the wine and spirits sectors. Being in Hong Kong since 1998 is a winning strategic choice that Vinexpo offers to its clients”.

The 20th anniversary of Vinexpo Hong Kong exhibition will take place from May 29 to 31, where 1300 exhibitors from 28 countries will showcase their products to an expected 18000 visitors.

About Vinexpo
Vinexpo organises wine and spirits events for industry professionals acting as the sector’s international partner since its establishment, in 1981, on the initiative of Bordeaux Gironde’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Through its 35 years B2B experience the Group has developed an in-depth understanding of the market, as well as establishing strong relationships with key distributors across the world. It runs exhibitions in five set locations (Bordeaux, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York and soon Paris), and one touring show (Vinexpo Explorer). Vinexpo thus covers the three continents with the highest consumption rates, and continues to be the market leader for wine and spirits events as the go-to forum for producers and buyers. The Group is expanding with two new exhibitions in New York (2018) and Paris (2020) and with Vinexpo Explorer (held in Austria in 2017) scheduled to take place in California in September 2018. Vinexpo’s successful expansion strategy is marked this year by the 20th anniversary celebration of its pioneering establishment in Hong Kong, in 1998, of the first ever wine and spirits exhibition in the region.

The International Rhône Wine Community will Unite In Paso Robles Wine Country this April

February 22, 2018 by evebushman

Hospice du Rhône’s bi-annual conference creates the largest gathering of Rhône wines on the planet

San Luis Obispo, Calif. USA— Hospice du Rhône®, an international wine organization based in San Luis Obispo, California, will host their bi-annual Paso Robles conference April 26 -28, 2018 at the Paso Robles Event Center. Uniting the world-wide Rhône wine community, the three-day wine event will gather attendees for a weekend complete with in-depth educational seminars, tastings exploring global Rhône wines, carefully curated meals and so much more.

slide-seminarThrough the years, Hospice du Rhône has played host to a diverse set of international Rhône personalities, tasted attendees on Rhône wines found only at the Paso Robles conference and has been the launching platform for many Rhône focused wineries. The 2018 event will continue this tradition by uniting an international group of winemakers, importers, enthusiasts, sommeliers and media who all share a passion for the twenty-two Rhône varieties.

The 2018 Seminar Series will once again gather Rhône winemakers and winegrowers alike to take the stage to discuss all things Rhône wine. Starting off the series will be a lively look, and taste, into the South African Cinsault renaissance. Presenting a collection of wines that will deliciously illustrate this Cinsault phenomenon will be Ryan Mostert of Silwervis, Andrea Mullineux of Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, Tremayne Smith of The Blacksmith and Danie Steytler of Kaapzicht Wine Estate. Moderated by Lauren Buzzeo of Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Digging deep into the historic soils of the Hoffmann Vineyard, planted in the 1880s, within the Barossa Valley in Australia will be four dynamic winemakers and one sixth generation farmer. Examining cultural history and how winemakers interpret fruit from the same vines will be Adrian Hoffmann of Hoffman Vineyard, Paul Heinecke of Soul Growers, Russell Johnstone of RBJ Vintners, Chris Ringland of North Barossa Vintners Collaboration and Michael Twelftree of Two Hands Winery & Twelftree, along with moderator Chuck Hayward of Vinroads.

Adding to the docket will be an in-depth look into the fascinating history of California Rhône vineyards dating back to the 1880s. Sharing Rhône wines from a variety of historic California vineyards, insight and stories of the past will be presenters Morgan Twain-Peterson, MW of Bedrock Wine Company and Tegan Passalacqua of Sandlands and Turley Wine Cellars. Moderating this look at the past will be John Alban, Founder of Hospice du Rhône and Alban Vineyards.

Making the trip from the Rhône Valley to close out the 2018 Paso Robles Seminar Series will be the ever-gracious and talented Philippe Guigal of E. Guigal. Guests will experience the magic of Philippe, his wines and his family’s history as they taste through wines from one of the greatest wine estates in the world.

The journey continues with over 130 global Rhône wine producers sharing their wines at both the Opening and the Closing tastings. The Opening Tasting will focus on Rhône wines from the 2012 vintage and older where the Closing Tasting will feature Rhône variety wines from the 2012 vintage and newer. This tasting format allows guests a two-day opportunity to taste how gracefully the producers’ wines age and what to expect in the future. A list of all attending Rhône wine producers and importers may be found on the organizations website.

This Rhônely installment would not be complete without exquisite culinary comrades taking to the stove. Guests will delight in cuisine from Chef John Toulze of the girl & the fig of Sonoma at an invite-only welcome reception, the refreshing fare of Chef Nick Nolan of Society Cuisine of Paso Robles for the Rosé Lunch, and the talented Chef Spencer Johnston of Danior Kitchen Catering from San Luis Obispo at the Saturday Farewell Dinner.

This bi-annual conference could not be made possible without the generosity of sponsors. Supporting the 2018 Paso Robles gathering is Cadus Tonnellerie France, Clever Concepts, Farm Credit West, FedEx, Fiji Water, J&L Wines, Pack n’ Ship Direct, Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, Poor Richard’s Press, Riedel, The SOMM Journal, Scott Laboratories, Sunridge Nurseries, Taylor Rental Party Plus, the girl & the fig, The Tasting Panel, Travel Paso Robles, Umpqua Bank, Wine & Spirits Magazine and Wine Country this Month.

Attendees should gear up for a weekend of serious Rhône wine fun brimming with all things Rhône. From weekend passes to individual tickets, guests can purchase the option that best fits their schedule. Passes for the Paso Robles conference April 26 – 28, 2018 at the Paso Robles Event Center begin at $100 and are now on sale. To purchase passes and to learn more visit www.hospicedurhone.org.
