I’ve done tequila tastings a few times. The tequilas sent to me for review by Ricardo Gamarra, President of Asombroso Tequila, presented a couple of differences: a pink one whose color came from French oak that had previously stored Bordeaux and a possible membership in their “Agave Club” that was a bit too interesting to pass up. So, without further adieu, this is what I discovered:
El Platino (Silver)
Perfumy notes of toasted almonds, black licorice candy and sweetened cream followed by smooth mouthfeel, slight mid palate burn, lingering toasted nuts on the back palate. Exceptional, nice on the rocks.
La Rosa (Reposado)
Maybe because it was aged in Bordeaux oak casks I got velvety rose petals, maraschino cherries and hazelnuts on the nose. Smooth taste of buttery hazelnuts, the same mid-palate burn and a slight flavor of creamy butter on the finish. I wanted more of this one.
Tequila Extra Anejo
Wowed by butter toffee peanuts, popcorn, toasted marshmallows aromas, then in the mouth I found flavor profile of a fine single malt scotch if I didn’t know any better. There was buttered toast, a handful of mixed nuts and a smoother finish that lingered with both sweetness and spice.
Conclusion
Not for a margarita, unless you must, have alone on the single cube or the rocks, no garnish needed. Hubby of course had my leftovers in a margarita and liked them just fine with just a slice of lime.
