How it Began: Bushman and Perlis and Wine

August 19, 2022 by evebushman

Back in 2009, or maybe even a bit earlier, I had an appointment with our insurance agent at her office in Newhall. She mentioned that a “money guy” who worked down the hall, had been reading my wine column in The Signal newspaper and wanted to meet me. The guy was Michael Perlis. That fateful day was the beginning of a great relationship.

I walked over to Michael’s office, knocked, and we met. Come to find Michael was a fan and a wine lover, but he also had a motive in meeting me, he wanted to contribute to Eve’s Wine 101 website and also…be my editor to catch and correct all of the errors he had read of mine over the years! Egads – one of Michael’s favorite Eve-ism words – and off we were. I don’t know if he said all of this in our first meeting or later after we four – with our spouses Eddie and Karen – had met over wine a few times, but this is how I remember it.

Flash forward a bit more to one of my articles for Eve’s Wine 101, and the first time that Michael chimed in on my post. That was May of 2009. Michael began writing a weekly column, which ran most Saturdays following my column on Fridays. Over the years I’ve learned more about wine through Michael’s articles – even more now that his wife Karen is co-writing them – and I suspect he’s learned from some of mine.

We’ve shared wine event plans, wine trip plans, tasting notes, and plenty of wine over the years. But mostly we’ve shared a deep friendship, common interests and goals for our website.

More collaboration included Michael pushing me to create Eve Bushman Consulting where for over a decade we assisted non-profits but also wineries, bars and restaurants with marketing and events. (We had been asked for advice many times, based on our wine/spirits knowledge, experience and knowing our city.) More of that can be found via a Google search or Eve’s Wine 101 blog.

Some of our amazing memories include the story behind the photo I chose for this post: we offered our consulting services to the Wish Education Foundation when we presented an idea of having the first wine tasting in the Old Town Newhall Library. We recruited pals, including co-host Marlee Lauffer, to open their own cellared wines, as well as wineries and local restaurants that were willing to participate. There’s a lot more on that event and others in our blog, it’s just one example to illustrate our collaboration, and the support of our spouses that also gave up their time and their wine. This particular event was called A Toast And A Wish.

Wine Interests

While Michael and Karen had wine tasted in Paso Robles, when we first met I hadn’t been there yet. Michael taught me that the Central Coast – and Sonoma, an area I also didn’t visit often – had plenty to offer. I learned pretty quickly that it was time to hit the road. I was mostly an armchair writer at that point, except for trips only to Napa now and then.  Our wine tastes sometimes differ- I am big on Napa Cabs, Rhônes and Bordeaux – but we appreciate each other’s palate. We both love Zinfandel! I’ve learned that getting out of my comfort zone – and a rut – helped me learn even more about wine.

Our own relationship

On a personal note, up until Covid, Michael and I enjoyed monthly staff lunches over wine. Michael brought the wine and I footed the bill, and I know Michael was the more generous one here! We would cover business, and then get down to harmless gossip, travel plans and ideas. Almost every time when a new challenge faced us, Michael always found a way to bolster my ego – and our collective talents – to take on any challenge. We enjoyed supporting our favorite local restaurants too, and hope to renew these lunch meetings as soon as Covid stops plaguing us all.

Michael’s Bio

I have been pursuing my passion for wine for more than 25 years. I have had the good fortune of having numerous mentors to show me the way, as well as a wonderful wife who encourages me and shares my interest. After a couple of decades of learning about wine, attending events, visiting wineries and vineyards, and tasting as much wine as I possibly could, I had the amazing luck to meet Eve Bushman. Now, as Contributing Editor for Eve’s Wine 101, I do my best to bring as much information as possible about wine to Eve’s Wine 101 faithful readers. You can contact Michael at: michaelthezinfan@aol.com

From Eve

Not sure what prompted this article. I had recently reached out to Michael for his thoughts on changing our weekly newsletter to twice monthly, and possibly not having daily content. While I’ve retired Eve Bushman Consulting, Eve’s Wine 101 blog is standing firm as both of us have no plans to stop writing and supporting the wine and spirits industry. Whatever it was, I’m happy to report that we are both thankful to our loyal readers, now for well over a decade! And maybe I just wanted Michael to know, as he is editing this article like all of my others, how much he is loved and appreciated. Egads!

Madera Wines Are Winners!

August 14, 2022 by evebushman

MADERA, CA  — Each summer season the California wine world is abuzz with news from the prestigious Sunset International Wine Competition. More than 2,900 vintages vie for the annual accolades, and this year, two of Madera County’s most beloved wineries took home Double Gold!

To earn a Double Gold medal, the judges must award a score higher than 95 points. This is no easy feat amongst the distinguished applicants in this year’s field. Excitingly, San Joaquin Winery’s 2021 Toschi Vineyards Red Moscato did exactly that, earning the winery its highest award to date. In addition, Westbrook Wine Farm, located in the Sierra foothill hamlet of O’Neals, also took home Double Gold and Best of Class for the Westbrook Wine Farm NV Malmsey Dearest.

“To have a wine receive a medal here is no small achievement,” stated Debra DelFiorentino, CEO / Executive Director of the Sunset International Wine Competition. “Our competition is one of the most respected, recognized for consistently identifying the best wines produced internationally. This contest again drew top-level wines, and our hand-picked, top-quality judges determined which wines stood out as worthy of accolades.”

In addition to their first Double Gold Medal, San Joaquin Winery also earned silver medals for their Moody Press Cellars Brut Blanc de Blanc and Toschi Vineyards Family Blend at the 2022 Sunset International Wine Competition. Furthermore, the winery earned silver medals and 91 points each for the 2021 Toschi Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc, 2020 Moody Press Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2019 Toschi Vineyards Pinot Noir at the California State Fair.

“We are very proud and excited to receive our latest medals, especially the Double Gold for our Toschi Vineyards Red Moscato. The Moscato grapes come from our locally farmed vineyard, which we carefully evaluate for quality from bud break to harvest,” San Joaquin Winery, Winemaker Miguel Sanchez, shared. “The hours spent monitoring this vineyard have definitely paid off! We hope you will stop by our tasting room, open seven days a week, and try these latest award-winning wines.”

Westbrook Wine Farm winemaker Ray Krause, gives thanks to his clientele (the ultimate judges) for their continued support. Westbrook Wine Farm is open for wine tasting by appointment only. Cheers!

New AVA Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon becomes the 11th nested AVA in the Willamette Valley

August 8, 2022 by evebushman

PORTLAND, ORE. (PRWEB) – Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon, the newest appellation in Oregon and nested American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the Willamette Valley, has received federal recognition as an official AVA. Drawn to reflect distinct soil, topography and climate attributes, Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon AVA becomes the 23rd federally recognized winegrowing region in Oregon and the 11th nested AVA within the Willamette Valley. The new nested AVA was granted approval by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) on June 3, 2022 and took effect on July 5, 2022.

Located in Polk County, the Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon AVA is characterized by the warmth of the nearby Willamette River, the mild influence of the Van Duzer winds, and the rain shadow of Laurel Mountain to the west. It is the Valley’s second smallest AVA at 584 planted acres but one of its most densely planted. Mount Pisgah was formed 65 million years ago as a sea floor volcano, and has since been covered by marine sediment which pushed up out of the ocean. This unique geology allows the grapes to develop a deep complexity in the region’s shallow soils.

Five years ago, Brad Ford of Illahe Vineyards petitioned the TTB for the addition of the AVA to the wine country map. Ten vineyards and three wineries join the new Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon AVA. A full list of wineries and vineyards can be found below.

“Thanks to an excellent group of growers who helped identify the most important aspects of our little mountain, I have no doubt we will continue to work together to build a beautiful destination for people willing to go the extra mile,” said Ford.

The most common grape varieties in the AVA are Pinot noir, Pinot gris, Pinot blanc, Chardonnay and Tempranillo. Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon AVA is located 15 miles west of Salem, Oregon, and is the second most southern nested AVA within the Willamette Valley AVA, next to Lower Long Tom, which was newly established in November 2021.

“Recognition of Mount Pisgah, Polk County, shows again how we continue to learn about, and appreciate, new areas of viticultural distinction in Oregon. Each one adds its own chapter to Oregon’s story of unique soils, unmatched geology, topography and globally recognized wine quality” said Oregon Wine Board President Tom Danowski. “These federal AVA designations take years to achieve as the standards are rigorous for establishing a region as clearly differentiated.”

“We’re so excited to see Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon AVA recognized in the larger story of the Willamette Valley,” said Morgen McLaughlin, executive director of the Willamette Valley Wineries Association. “The region’s kingpin varietal, Pinot noir, is such an expressive grape: it insists on telling you where it’s from. Both the industry and consumers who look to Oregon for its one-of-a-kind appellations and the sense of place in Oregon’s wines can celebrate the addition of Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon.”

To differentiate from another “Mount Pisgah” in Oregon’s Lane County, it was necessary for the AVA to be named Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon––now the second longest named AVA in Oregon after The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA, approved in 2015 and nested in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. Oregon is home to 995 wineries and 1,370 vineyards planted, generating an annual economic impact of $7.2 billion for the state.

Meet the White Portuguese Grapes from Alentejo

July 29, 2022 by evebushman

A few weeks ago I was sent six white wines from Portugal for review. Below is some of the information regarding the density of the grapes grown in the area and warmth of the climate – in Alentejo – as well as useful varietal descriptions. Below that are my reviews of the wines I tasted. Being that I received these in the middle of a very hot summer, I welcomed reviewing so many white wines, most of which I was unfamiliar.

From Alentejo

While many regions are still planning for climate change, Alentejo is already there, growing wines in a warmer world. Surprisingly to many, one-fifth of their production comprises exciting, aromatic whites.

Portugal has the highest density of native grapes per square mile of any country in the world. Alentejo growers and winemakers appreciate the native grape varieties, many of which are versatile, drought-resistant, have acidity to spare, and/or ripen early, making them well-suited to Alentejo’s hot climate.

Variety Information From Alentejo

(Note: I read the tasting notes on these grapes after I sampled the wines.)

Antão Vaz: Versatile, perfumed and shows great solo or blended, Antão Vaz is Alentejo’s white star. This hot-climate variety is highly resistant to drought and disease, producing consistently reliable yields, which ripen evenly.

Arinto: Alentejo’s best white blending variety, thanks to its exuberant acidity. Discreet aroma. Green apple, lemon and lime freshness and mineral notes favored by many wine lovers. Arinto has large leaves for shading and super-high acidity, making it well suited to the hot Alentejo climate.

Fernão Pires: Extremely aromatic (faintly reminiscent of Muscat), with distinctive peppery notes on nose and palate, Fernao Pires matures early and softens with oak aging. Suited to hot climates, the vine is susceptible to frost, so is not a match in cooler areas.

Roupeiro – aka Malvasia and Siria: Rouperio used to be the most widely planted white in Alentejo.  Often paired with Antao Vaz and Arinto, this grape is best enjoyed young, with its seductive citrus notes of orange and lemon, hints of peach, melon, laurel and forest flowers. Rouperio vines are resistant to regular grape diseases such as powdery mildew, which are severe in hot and dry climates like Alentejo.

Verdelho: An undervalued grape that over-delivers, Verdelho styles range from fresh and fruity when young, to rich and unctuous (an “oily” palate-coating trait like Riesling or Chenin) when older. Verdelho is early ripening and drought-tolerant variety, making it ideal for growing in the hot climates such as Alentejo. It ripens early avoiding spring frosts and mildew diseases. Verdelho originates from the Azores and is not linked to Spanish Verdejo.

The Tasting

1. 2021 Torre de Palma

Grapes: Arinto and Alvarinho (SRP $40)

With a color of pale straw, aromas included fresh cut cantaloupe, honeydew melon, lemon-lime, white peach, a perfume with talcum powder, a tiny trace of smoke and recently rain-washed concrete. Very pleasant and inviting. Lots of bruised Yellow Delicious apple on the mouth, followed by a mild acidity, and more bruised fruit – Rainier cherry and plum – as well as lively lemon-lime and bracing minerality. (Also interesting to see the lemon-lime made their tasting notes for the Arinto grape as well.)

2. 2020 Adega de Redondo Porta da Ravessa Special Edition White (SRP $15)

Grapes: Roupeiro, Fernão Pires, Arinto.

A very pale gold color, with a nose full of yellow peach, white flowers, honey, and a cooling minerality. The mouth was a collection of that same peach and honey as well as Meyer lemon and sliced Naval oranges. A mild to medium acidity allowed the fruit to linger gracefully on the palate. I was unfamiliar with these grapes and I enjoyed tasting them in this wine. (I read the tasting notes on the Roupeiro after I tasted this wine, found it interesting to find the lemon, orange and peach in their notes as well.)

3. 2018 Conventual Reserva Branca

Grapes: Fernao Pires, Antao Vaz

This was the oldest wine offered in this group, made with Portuguese grapes I’m familiar with and the only Reserva, so I was looking forward to this one. I noted a pale yellow gold color to the wine, with white flower, cling peaches, a dusting of lemon and sea air on the nose. Going in for a taste this time I found those same cling peaches, a nut fruit like apricot, lemonade, and a medium acidity and crispness that allowed for a nice length. (Definitely aromatic as the Fernao Pires grape is described above.)

4. 2021 Herdade do Esporão Colheita Branco (SRP $18)

Grapes: Antao Vaz, Viosinho.

I was interested in trying this wine because I had reviewed the 2020 vintage of the same wine this past February. (My review of the Esporao Branco 2020:

http://evewine101.com/2022/02/11/tasting-sustainable-wines-with-herdade-do-esporao/) This time I noted a pale gold color with even paler pink brush strokes. The nose reminded me of crisp apple slices, pears, sweet butter and fine mineral water; while the flavors included that same apple and pear as well as juicy peach, lime soda and a nice acidity that made me want to go back for another taste.

5. 2020 Rocim Mariana White (SRP $16)

Grapes: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho.

Wine number five had a color of pale hay, with aromas of fresh pineapple slices, lemon candy, buttery wafers and crushed dry leaves. For the taste I got fruit cocktail, bruised apple, a savory quality, acidity and a mild to medium salinity. The lemon, minerality and acidity I now know are common to the Arinto grape – see the grape descriptions above.

6. 2021 Marques de Borba Colheita White

Grapes: Arinto, Antão Vaz and Viognier.

My last Portuguese wine of the week to study, as I’d been savoring these one night at a time, so here goes: Colors of pale yellow with a hint of both green and rose. Bruised apple, toffee, lemon zest, peach and wet pebbles greeted me on the nose while I felt a mouth coating viscosity was filled with lemon, lime, acidity, minerals and a slight reminiscence of sea salt. Very refreshing.

SOUTH COAST WINERY NAMED “GOLDEN STATE WINERY OF THE YEAR” BY CALIFORNIA STATE FAIR

July 24, 2022 by evebushman

TEMECULA, Calif. – South Coast Winery announces with great pride it has been designated as the esteemed Golden State Winery of the Year by the California State Fair in the California Commercial Wine Competition, which recently took place at Cal Expo in Sacramento. This is an unprecedented fifth win of this title by any California winery with South Coast also winning this designation in 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2016.

This year, a panel of 44 official judges led by Chief Judge Mark Chandler tasted and evaluated 1,953 California wines from 443 California wineries. The competition is open only to wines made with fruit grown and produced in the 11 growing regions across California. Wines are evaluated by class, varietal, style and region based upon the source of the grapes. The expert judging panel includes respected winemakers, wine merchants, writers, promoters and educators.

“The California State Fair Wine Competition, which dates back to 1854, along with its pronouncement of South Coast Winery as Golden State Winery of the Year 2022 is so important and meaningful to us,” said Jeff Carter, president of South Coast Winery. “We owe this amazing kudo and the award recognition of the 29 wines we entered in the competition to the incredible Temecula Valley terroir, to our dedicated team and highly valued winemakers – Jon McPherson and Javier Flores – and to over 20 years of successful viticulture production.”

The 2022 California State Fair Wine Competition results included awards bestowed on all the 29 wines entered by South Coast Winery. They include Double Gold Awards for the vineyard’s 2020 Pinot Blanc, Best of Region White with a score of 100 and NV Daybreak with a score of 99. Gold Awards were given to 2018 Meritage Best of Appellation, 2018 Viognier Best of Class Appellation, 2021 Dry Gewurztraminer Best of Appellation, NV Brut, 2020 Riesling and NV Vineyard Rose. South Coast Winery also accrued 13 Silver Awards and eight Bronze.

Union des Grands Crus Bordeaux 2022 Tasting Event: The New 2019 Vintage

July 22, 2022 by evebushman

Not sure how many of the “130 Castles in the Union” of Bordeaux Eddie and I tasted at the Union des Grands Crus Bordeaux 2022 tasting event, but taste we did! We go to this preview of newly released Bordeaux wines every year – we missed a couple as everyone did when events went on hiatus through Covid – so we were thrilled to attend this latest event.

The preview event we attended was filled with sommeliers, journalists, and restaurant and wine shop owners – as it has been in the past – so it was nice to reconnect with many of my peers after such a “dry spell”. We were also blessed with seeing some of the same winery representatives across the table we hadn’t seen in a while – and some Chateau owners too! Again, as it’s been a couple of years, everyone just seemed so relieved to finally meet again over fine wine that came across the ocean to be shared. (The evening’s event, open to the public, would be filled with wine lovers, aficionados and collectors.)

Appellations represented include Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Pauillac, Sauternes and Barsac, Pessac-Leognan, Graves, Pomerol, Listrac-Medoc, Moulis-en-Medoc, Haut-Medoc, Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estephe. There was enough wine to fill two rooms of excited tasters.

You can see the story in my public photos here or read on. We appreciated everything we sampled! In general, I felt that many of the 2019s were good to drink now and didn’t necessarily require a lot of aging, the blends were well done, there was a buzz about the Merlots and the Cab-based Bordeaux from Pauillac.

Again, and just in general, some of the reds were dark, tannic and brooding while others were fresh and lively which to me means there was a lot to appreciate no matter what blends you normally lean towards.

The whites – Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauternes that I enjoyed – benefitted from great fresh fruit and winemaking skills. I enjoyed almost every single one I sampled.

Though we didn’t come close to tasting everything, we would recommend that you seek out these stellar 2019: Chateau Lynch Bages, Chateau Phelan Segur, Chateau de Chantegrive, Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot, Chateau Leoville Barton, Chateau Leoville Poyferre, Chateau Gloria, Chateau Fonreaud, Chateau Dauzac, Chateau Talbot, Chateau Rauzan Gassies, Chateau Croizet Bages, Chateau Prieure Lichine, Chateau Gazin, Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Chateau Pavie Macquin, Chateau Clinet, Chateau La Tour Figeac, Chateau Grand Mayne, Chateau Pape-Clement, Chateau Latour-Martillac, Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse, Domaine de Chevalier, Chateau Haut-Bergey, Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron, Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Chateau Larrivet Haut Brion, Chateau Bouscaut, Chateau Clos Haut-Peyraguey, Chateau Doisy Daene and Chateau Sigalas-Rabaud.
