The Historic Vineyard Society recently held its tasting at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. Sadly, due to the proverbial “circumstances beyond our control”, we were unable to attend the affair. Still, we want to share with you the list of participating wineries and the wines they were pouring.
You may ask: Why are we doing this? Admittedly, we don’t do this for every event we miss. But we feel the Historic Vineyard Society is doing such important work that keeping them on your radar is very important.
These old heritage vineyard sites are constantly in danger of being pulled out, either to be replaced with more profitable grape varieties or having the land used for something else entirely. Now, with the current decrease in overall wine sales, some of these vineyards are considered even more superfluous.

You’ll see on the list below wineries that you will recognize. Carlisle, Bedrock, Turley, Ridge, Biale, Corison, Williams Selyem, Limerick Lane, Frog’s Leap, Seghesio and others. These have their own well-deserved cult followings. But there are other wineries that are contributing their efforts as well and they deserve your attention.
Some comments about just a few of them that we are fond of:
Carol Shelton Wines – Carol Shelton, the Queen of Zinfandel herself.
Desire Lines Wine Co. – wines made by Cody and Emily Rasmussen. Cody is assistant winemaker at Bedrock. Emily is also Executive Director of the Historic Vineyard Society.
Once and Future – the Godfather of Zinfandel, Joel Peterson, founder of Ravenswood winery and father of Morgan Twain-Peterson of Bedrock Wine Company.
Sandlands Vineyards – personal venture of Tegan Passalacqua, director of winemaking at Turley.
Under The Wire – sister winery to Bedrock, focusing on sparkling wines.

We’ve personally enjoyed wines from Bedrock, Carol Shelton, Limerick Lane, I. Brand, Once and Future, Ridge, Robert Biale, Sandlands and Turley as you might have seen in some of our previous articles – the latest one being the wines we brought to dinner in our coverage of Mill Valley restaurants. We hope to visit more of the other wineries in the near future, or at least taste their wines, to share the news and relevance of the Historic Vineyard Society.
