This past December, while judging for the Proof Awards, we were given swag samples of different types of liquor and things to go with liquor. One item was intriguing to me as it was a “single-serve sachet (that) allows you to enjoy a quality Old Fashioned cocktail that rivals one made at your favorite bar…crafted with three unique sugars, all-natural bitters, Italian Marasca cherry syrup, and natural orange extracts…” and made by Still Branch.
Well. You should know I love a good Old Fashioned. I’ve made riffs at home with bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup, brown sugar, and also take advantage of Old Fashioned bitters, so I loved the idea of this one with the unique Italian Marasca cherry syrup.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Luxardo cherries enrobed in dark chocolate, smoked oak, fired orange peel, cinnamon sticks, and toasted marshmallow.
Flavor: Elijah Craig bourbon (my bourbon choice for this), lots of spices – including the cinnamon on the nose, char, orange slices, dark cherries, and a long and lingering spicy finish.
Conclusion: I would totally use these. I liked the extra cherry notes and smoke I don’t get when I’ve made this at home.
I checked out their website and learned you can buy these “pocket bartender sachets” directly from Amazon for about $2.00 each, have received many awards, and are rated 4.4 stars. I think the box with 12 sachets would make a great gift to a budding home mixologist, as well as us lazy seniors – both would appreciate the unique flavors and ease of them.
