Vintage Eve Circa 8/2013: Tasting, and Learning, from Louie Lucas of Lucas and Lewellen Vineyards

June 20, 2017 by evebushman

Walking into the Lucas and Lewellen Vineyards tasting room on the popular Copenhagen Drive in Solvang, I was pleased to have my winery appointment set up with Louie Lucas himself. Before we even sat down he started giving us some history of his winery.

1907866_10152191815716558_942951687_o

Louie Lucas is on the far right, with his hands on his award-winning grapes. Photo from Facebook.

With 400 acres, and four different properties, Lucas and Lewellen grows 25 grape varietals. The tasting room had been open for 10 years – serving up to 25 wines. The planting began in 1970 and Lucas has been in the area for 40 years.

The current winemaker for the last five years is Megan McGrath Gates, who went to UC Davis for her wine credentials.

Wining Awards For Others

Lucas and Lewellen Vineyards has a long history of selling grapes to Napa wineries as well as more local winemakers.  So, his grapes “win awards for others”.  And he also makes wines for others, like actress Jane Seymour.  Amongst his list is Chardonnay to Kendall Jackson, more goes to Jed Steele of Steele wines, Muscat to Napa’s Castello di Amorosa, Gewurztraminer to V. Sattui and Syrah to winemaking legend Heidi Barrett.

I asked Lucas if I could mention this in my article, he hesitated for two seconds and then agreed, saying, “Its too late for them to get me!”

Lucas’ father and grandfather were grape growers, and what they produced had to be perfect and blemish free, even the stems had to be cured. “You grow good grapes,” Lucas said. “And you get good wine.”

“Today we buy from catalogs when shopping for root stocks,” Lucas said in regards to how things have changed in 40 years.  “So many more variations then we had before, and all are supposed to be resistant to disease, we shall see.”

Lucas and Lewellen has 1200 French oak barrels, and buys both new and used.  They added 300 new barrels last year and are experimenting with hybrid barrels that are made from half American and half French oak.

Tasting

2011 Blanc de Noirs Brut Sparkling wine, 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay

Juicy fruit strawberry and peach on the nose, nice toast and jam on the palate.  They don’t make the wine, instead they use a sparkling wine facility to make it, and only use their handpicked grapes. Outstanding.

Viognier 2012

A touch of stainless steel, followed by peach, kiwi, candied ginger and pear on the nose. Very balanced on the taste. Perfect.

2009 Chenin Blanc

White peaches, lime, green grapes, green grass.  Great viscosity, mouth coating, not acidic.

Gewurztraminer 2011

Lemons, earth, peppermint on nose.  Same gentle mouthfeel and low acid.

2011 Old Vine Moscato

2% residual sugar. Candied orange, wet wood, cloves.

2012 Pinot Noir Rose (100% Pinot)

Cherry, stems, rose petals…again, that nice balance and viscosity.

2009 Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir, Estate

New clones since the “movie” (a nod to “Sideways”), and now making outstanding Pinot Noir wines from 10 different clones.

Good dark cherries, dry, green peppercorns.

2010 High Nine Pinot 667 clone, Santa Maria.

Smokey, charred, bright red fruit, long finish.

Malbec 2010

Blue and red fruit, dry, medium length. A favorite.

2007 Petit Verdot

Inky black color, blue fruit, blueberry jam rolled up in a pancake on the nose.  Mature and tannic on the palate. Another fave.

2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Cote del Sol (means “The Sun side”)

Balanced red and blue fruit and tannins, very good, long finish.

2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Valley View

83 cab percent and all other Bordeaux grapes

Balanced, dusty, plums bell pepper.

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 6

Dark purple, jammy, dry toast, plums.

Tasting and Lesson: ALSACE WINE + SWINE

May 27, 2016 by evebushman

A recent grand tasting of Alsatian wines was paired with pork dishes created by Chef Kris Morningstar of LA’s Terrine restaurant and Chef Chris Oh of Hanjip. Organized by lawinetasting.com and produced by Teuwen Communications NY for Wines of Alsace USA, the #DrinkAlsace #AlsaceinLA event was full of appreciative wine and food lovers.

A traditional staple on Alsace tables, pork finds its perfect pairing in the wines of the region. With one of the most varied terroirs in France and mineral-driven, aromatic varieties, Alsace’s wines have the versatility to match the equally adaptable pork….(Taste) over 60 wines—representing Alsace’s five main varieties and sparkling Crémant d’Alsace wines…

Friends Guy Lelarge and Karen Bennett

Tasting

Impressive. With 60 wines to taste (I didn’t have them all) and wonderful pork dishes to pair them with (I think I missed one) it sure was a pleasant way to while away an afternoon educating my palate. If you think white wine (Alsace is known for Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris) has to be paired with white food (fish, chicken, salad) you need to think outside the box a bit.

Every dish I tried I liked. Same with the wine. You can see a slice of the event in a one-minute slideshow here. Some of the wines that impressed me were ALL of the Cremants: Joseph Cattin Brut NV, Pfister Brut Blanc de Blancs NV, Dirler-Cade Brut 2012, Vignoble Des 2 Lunes Brut Blanc de Blancs Comete 2011, Allimant-Laugner Brut Rose NV, Lucien Albrecht Brut Rose NV, Jean-Baptiste Adam Brut Rose NV and Pierre Sparr Brut Rose NV.

After these came some tasty Pinot Blancs including Domaines Schlumberger Les Princes Abbes 2014, Josmeyer Mise Du Printemps 2014, Charles Sparr 2013 and Dopff & Irion 2013. Of the Rieslings I enjoyed the Weinbach Cuvee Theo 2014 and Hubert Meyer 2014, though I admit that I was unable to taste all that was available, and the same for the busy Pinot Gris table. I, did, however, make up for it with some lovely Gewürztraminer: Boeckel 2014, Famille Hugel 2013, Eugene Meyer 2012, Pierre Sparr Grand Cru Mambourg 2014, Albert Mann Grand Cru Steingrubler 2012 and Marcel Deiss Grand Cru De Bergheim 2009. A few Pinot Noirs that I got into my glass included the Andre Scherer 2013,Emile Beyer De L’Hostellerie 2012, Florian Beck-Hartweg “F” 2012 and Albert Mann Clos De La Faille 2011.

Of the pork dishes, I was smitten with the “Bossam” Korean style pork with kimchi, “Cochinita Pibil Tacos” with citrus onion, cilantro and cojita and the “Torta Cubana” smoked ham, capicola, gruyere, spicy pickle was my favorite.

ROCKS & RIESLING RETROSPECTIVE, led by Master Sommelier Brian McClintic

A focus on Riesling highlighting Alsace’s ability to produce world-class examples. Terroir’s effect on the grape and its ageability will be discussed, as well as specific Grand Cru sites. A comparative tasting between new and old vintages of wines from four different soil types will follow.

McClintic began the seminar by giving us a visual of the Alsace region. The vineyards are placed north to south to catch the morning sun and take full advantage of a long growing season. There are various soils, some of which are mentioned below in the tasting notes.

In our sampling we were to have roughly 4% of the Grand Cru produced – which represented the “best of the best.” (I was beginning to salivate as we were to taste decades old Riesling and newer vintages.) McClintic said that all are good paired with Thai or Indian food (as well as the pork dishes we had enjoyed earlier) as cool Riesling handles heat well.

Seminar Tasting (Eve’s tasting notes separate aroma and taste with ; and are preceded by McClintic’s)

Trimbach Riesling 2009 and 1997

McClintic quoted the winery for saying it’s the “soil, soil, soil” that makes this a unique wine with tension on palate and “raciness.” The first bottling was in 1919, very old vines, so there is undoubtedly a wealth of experience in winemaking at Trimbach. These wines mellow with age. In this tasting McClintic thought that the 2009 was too young. However a “subdued petrol” character and some of the minerality comes through in the 1997, due to magnesium in the soil and limestone elements.

2009: A bit flinty, pale fruit, sharp lemon, ash, dried flowers; Acidic, lemon, tart, rich and long finish. 91 Eve pts.

1997: Bruised yellow apple, peach, floral; Same bruised apple, lemon, nice mouthfeel, both tart and sweet elements. Interesting. 92 Eve pts.

Weinbach 2014 and 1998

Granite instead of limestone soil type. Weinbach makes sure botrytis in wine is clean. Iron character, and iodine, is palpable on the palate. The Schlossberg site is considered “demanding”, according to the winery, and translates to beautiful things in the glass.

2014: Grass, sweet Meyer lemon, cling peaches; Tingly, pear, viscous, white pepper, honeyed finish. 92 Eve pts.

1998: Apricot brandy, golden raisin, honey, bark; Caramel, browned butter, char. 94 Eve pts.

Schlumberger 2012 and 2001

Family has more Grand Cru land than anyone else in Alsace. Lots of limestone, sandy and silt mixture with clay. Saering vineyard includes 60+ acres of land. Had the Saering label since 1800s.

2012: Chalky lemon, pineapple, green apple; sharp, unsweetened ice tea with lemon, acidic. Want to age this. 88 Eve pts.

2001: Pale honey, overripe pineapple, sandy beach; balanced fruit and acidity, not the same mouthfeel, lighter, very pleasant juxtaposition of sweet and salty.  93 Eve pts.

Zind-Humbrecht 2013 and 1993

Heavily volcanic, steep terrain, worked by hand, biodynamic. Clos St. Urbain are the highest vineyards in Alsace, almost 1,500 feet, and has a high ash content.

2013: Lemon soda, white pepper, concrete; Grapefruit juice, lemon wedge, short finish. 89 Eve pts.

1993: Courvoisier, fig, caramel candy; Thick, bruised fruit, tart on back palate was a surprise. 91 Eve pts.

Claiborne & Churchill Launches Elegant Updates in 2016

May 19, 2016 by evebushman

The Alsace-inspired winery to offer vacationers a room with a view and a place at the bar

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Longtime family-owned Edna Valley winery Claiborne & Churchill is thrilled to announce the completion of a beautifully renovated tasting room, along with new, charming wine country guest accommodations. These updates and new offerings make the popular San Luis Obispo winery a must-visit this coming tasting season.

slides-1

Claiborne & Churchill, still run by original owners Claiborne Thompson and Fredericka Churchill Thompson, has been producing Alsatian-style “alternative whites” in San Luis Obispo since 1983. In 1995, Clay and Fredericka built their pioneering, eco-friendly strawbale-constructed winery and opened their tasting room in the Edna Valley, and over the years they have expanded their picturesque garden area to accommodate more guests and larger parties for tastings and seasonal events, such as their vibrant summer concert series called “Sips & Songs.”

Now, upscale indoor renovations to the winery’s welcoming tasting room (which is, to the delight of visitors, right in the barrel room!) allow the popular producer to accommodate more visitors comfortably. Updates to the interior include a new feature wall and a rolling barn door reclaimed from an old dairy barn on the property, attractive lighting, and a custom stone-topped bar with an expanded serving area and hooks to hang bags. The spacious tasting room is the perfect place to sip Claiborne & Churchill’s aromatic white wines and lush Pinot Noirs, and the recent addition of artisanal, imported cheese pairings from local cheese shop Fromagerie Sophie makes for a truly gourmet tasting experience. Longtime tasting room attendant Hilary Langdon is very pleased with the renovations. “Claiborne & Churchill has always been a beautiful, comfortable environment for guests and employees, but now there is just that added wow factor,” said Langdon. “We were ready for an update, but one that still expresses who we are deep down: an inviting, hospitable, relaxing place to enjoy wine and enjoy others.”

For guests who are interested in holding their own private parties at the winery, Claiborne & Churchill will be taking reservations for small, special events such as birthday, anniversary, and graduation parties.

As an accompaniment to their expanded gardens and interior updates, the Thompsons also spent the fall of 2015 remodeling a lovely, two-bedroom duplex cottage next door to the winery. In the spirit of family and team work, it was a project everyone took part in. The Thompson’s daughter Elizabeth, Claiborne & Churchill’s outside sales manager, could be found many an afternoon working on projects with her parents, sanding down woodwork and painting. “If you are from out of town,” she says, “staying with us will be a perfect way to enjoy the heart of wine country here in San Luis Obispo. We couldn’t be more pleased to be able to offer this to our customers and guests.”

Quaint and charming, but with all the modern amenities, the cottage is perfect for  couples hitting the road for a weekend, for parents visiting students at Cal Poly, or for anyone just looking for a relaxing “getaway.” The unit is now available for vacation rental through the VRBO/Homeaway website, or by emailing elizabeth@claibornechurchill.com. Centrally located in SLO Wine Country, Claiborne & Churchill’s vacation property is only a ten minute drive from Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, or Arroyo Grande, and a fifteen-minute drive to Cal Poly. Claiborne & Churchill Cellar Club members will be offered a special, discounted price on their stays.

2016 is shaping up to be a great year ahead for one of Edna Valley’s favorite and oldest wineries. As the weather warms up and wine lovers start flocking to the tasting rooms all over the Central Coast, they’ll find themselves right at home at Claiborne & Churchill.

Acclaimed Claiborne & Churchill Wines

2014 Dry Gewurztraminer

Gold Medal: 2015 San Francisco International Wine Competition
Silver Medal: 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
90 Points: Wine Enthusiast (June 2016)
Gold, 91 Points: Critics Challenge International Wine Competition

Dry Gewurztraminer has been a signature wine at Claiborne & Churchill since our first crush in 1983, and the 2014 vintage is one of the best. While extremely dry, it still boasts the classic spice and fruit of this aromatic varietal, with notes of rose petal, jasmine, white peach and grapefruit. The wine is tangy and bright, with a refreshingly long finish. We recommend our Gewurztraminer with such spicy and exotic dishes as Pad Thai, Indian Curry, Jamaican Jerk Chicken, or Jambalaya.

2014 Dry Riesling

Gold Medal: 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
89 Points, Editors’ Choice: Wine Enthusiast (June 2016)
Silver, 89 Points: Critics Challenge International Wine Competition

Riesling has been called “the world’s greatest white wine grape,” and at Claiborne & Churchill this has always meant Dry Riesling. From our very first Dry Riesling in 1983 to the current 2014 we count thirty-two consecutive vintages of this other “signature wine”.  With scarcely any residual sugar (0.4%), it still retains the bright floral aromas and lovely fruit that make Riesling so appealing. The 2014 delivers a mouthful of citrus and stone fruit flavors, followed by a dry yet lingering finish. Riesling is a versatile and food-friendly wine, enhancing a wide variety of dishes, from seafood (especially crab and lobster) to poultry to vegetarian entrees.

2014 Pinot Gris

90 Points: Wine Enthusiast (June 2016)

Pinot Gris, like Riesling and Gewurztraminer, is one of the “noble grapes” of the French Alsace region, which inspires us to produce a wine of solid structure and rich texture. To this end we typically barrel-ferment our Pinot Gris, in well-seasoned, neutral French oak. This gives the wine a creamier mouth-feel that complements the backbone of bracing acidity. In the nose there are floral notes and on the palate flavors of melon, lemon, peach and nectarine. We recommend our Pinot Gris with richly-sauced dishes such as chicken fettucini Alfredo, butternut squash ravioli, or lobster mac ‘n’ cheese.

2014 “Classic” Estate Pinot Noir

Double Gold: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
Silver, 87 Points: 2016 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition
93 Points, Editors’ Choice: Wine Enthusiast (July 2016)

Pinot Noir enjoys a great reputation in our Edna Valley AVA and is the red grape of choice at Claiborne & Churchill. Our “Classic” Pinot Noir comes from our Edna Valley Estate Vineyards, a cool microclimate site only a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. The 2014 vintage of this seductive wine reflects this in its good structure, depth and concentration of fruit. Rich and sumptuous, it offers aromas of roses and spice, followed by flavors of strawberries and tart cherries. There is a kiss of soft oak in the background, and a long, lingering finish. Its good acidity and moderate alcohol will allow this wine to age gracefully over the years to come.

2014 “Twin Creeks” Estate Pinot Noir

Gold Medal: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
93 Points: Wine Enthusiast (July 2016)

The grapes for this barrel-select Pinot Noir come from our Estate “Twin Creeks” vineyards on the western side of the Edna Valley. Three clones of Pinot Noir (2A, Martini, and 113) are represented in this wine, giving the wine its distinctive flavor profile of dark berries, dried herbs, cinnamon, cola, and forest floor. Ample tannins and sweet oak promise a long life in any wine cellar. We find that our Twin Creeks Pinot continues to develop for six to eight years, and in its youth profits from decanting for an hour or two, to open up and show off its heady aromas.

About Claiborne & Churchill Winery
Founded in 1983 by Claiborne (Clay) Thompson and Fredericka Churchill, Claiborne & Churchill Winery is a small, family-owned winery devoted to producing Alsatian-style wines in California’s pastoral Edna Valley appellation. After successful careers in academia, Clay and Fredericka established C&C with a special focus on the dry, fruity, and food-friendly wines of eastern France’s Alsace region, namely Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer and Riesling. Sourced from cool-climate vineyards that support these varietals’ naturally high acidity and elegance, C&C wines have won critical and popular acclaim for over 30 years. In 2007 Clay passed his position as Winemaker to Coby Parker-Garcia, who continues to emphasize minimal manipulation of both fruit and wine today. C&C’s straw bale cellar and tasting room – the first of its kind in California – is open to the public every day from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M. at 2649 Carpenter Canyon Road in San Luis Obispo, California. Vintage Beacon Circa March 2010: Chile Came to Santa Clarita

December 22, 2015 by evebushman

On March 6 I interviewed Chef Tamra Levine about her inspired interpretation of Chilean fare for a wine pairing dinner at Salt Creek Grille. A month later, and I’m still ranting about it. But the difference is that I’ve now had the dinner.

salt creek grille valencia patioYou may have remembered last Thursday.

The winds whipped up to try and keep us all nestled indoors. But, at exactly 6:15, after I had whipped my own coif up into a tightly fastened “do”, it all calmed down.

I had to imagine that the same thing might be happening in the kitchens at Salt Creek Grille.

Along with their regular Thursday night bustle, they made an impressive inaugural debut in their catering department. And not any of the items were off of the menu; it was all created just for us.

Introduction: Chile 101

Whisked into the tightly tented outdoor bar unlike no other, guests were greeted with full flutes of sparkling wine – not on our printed menu.

From there we were seated, and like any classy event, were assigned to tables with people of like tastes. I was thrilled to find myself placed with Lil Lepore and Shari Fraizer, owners of Vino 100 Valencia. We enjoyed some fun “shop talk.”

Within minutes Greg Amsler, in between meetings for his man-of-the year nomination, welcomed us and introduced Tamra, who in turn, thanked us for attending the first of several regional wine pairing meals she had planned. I wanted her to tell the crowd that she is the only caterer and near sommelier in our valley equipped to create the meals and choose the wines for them, but being far more modest than I am, she instead introduced Alex Guarchi, president of TGIC Importers to talk to the crowd.

“I want to thank you all for taking the time to come to a dinner, during this recession. Taking the time for wine – if we don’t do that – there is something wrong with that picture.”

“Taste is very subjective I believe. You have to be open to the wine and food and let them speak for themselves. You will have light wines with the lighter food and then be introduced to bigger wines.”

“You’ve undoubtedly heard several do’s and don’ts with wine. Who here knows which fish is okay to have with a Pinot Noir?” To which Lil Lepore confidently answered, “Salmon!”

The Courses Begin

While Alex spoke, our first course arrived: Empanada de Camerone Humitas, Calabaza, Corn and Coconut soup with Pisco Sours. Pisco is a brandy made of Muscatel grapes in Chile and Peru; no one knows who created it first. The bar staff mixed it with egg whites, lime and sugar. The egg whites coated my tongue in a sugary glaze – the perfect aperitif to the soup and empanada.

Next came pan seared Chilean Sea Bass Moho paired with a low French oaked 2007 Santa Ema Reserve Chardonnay. Guests commented that the delicate fish balanced well with the wine.

Merken dusted Pheasant Breast Medallions stuffed with Chilean mushrooms made me wonder where you could get pheasant in SCV. Served over a bed of Chorizo laced Quinoa Risotto, I was surprised to learn from Tamra that the quinoa was an ancient grain and actually the seed of a plant. Paired with 2007 Montes Alpha Pinot Noir aged 12 months in French Oak, my palate was experiencing heaven.

Then, if that wasn’t enough, on came the Adobo Marinated Flank Steak with Chilean salsa, Potato and Onion Timbale and a 2005 Santa Ema Catalina. I was left to try and choose which of the reds I enjoyed more…and couldn’t do it.

Sneaking back to the kitchens to see the more-than-competent staff create the dessert, I shot some fun photos and then raced back as not to miss a bite. I did note that there was a friendly feel among them and I was happy to see that a meal this noteworthy could be managed so pleasantly.

My Dulce de Leche Ice Cream with raspberries, apricots and a to-die-for perfectly warmed Caramel Shot was accompanied by a 2008 Montes late harvest Gewurztraminer. I don’t usually eat desserts. I don’t usually enjoy late harvest wines. But, then again, I’d never had Chilean food in my life. It was not a night for usual tastes; it was one that was as Alex Guarchi had suggested, “Be open to the wine and food – and let them speak for themselves.”

A major winegrape growing region since the 1850s, today Lodi boasts over 750 growers. The region owes much of its recent success to the increase in critical and consumer attention paid to Lodi-designate wines. Known for its high quality winegrapes, Lodi was always a winegrowing region first – known best for specializing in viticulture and sustainability practices and selling its highly-coveted winegrapes to wineries and wine companies in Napa, Sonoma, and California’s Central Valley. However, the past 10-15 years has seen astronomical growth in demand for Lodi wines, as well as in tourism to the wine region, incentivizing winegrowers to hold on to larger percentages of their crop for craft production under their own labels. The result has been a dramatic shift in quality perception, with explosive growth enhanced by a friendly business culture that emphasizes collaboration, community and innovation.

Today, Lodi is home to over 85 boutique wineries specializing in small-lot, handmade wines that have garnered major awards at both domestic and international wine competitions.  In addition, Lodi is one of the leading wine regions when it comes to sustainable viticulture. The Lodi Winegrape Commission created Lodi Rules™, California’s first third-party-certified sustainable winegrowing program, which recently won Governor Jerry Brown’s annual Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) – the highest environmental award in the state of California –  for its mission to address major environmental, economic and social challenges facing California agricultural industry.

With more than 100 varieties currently being cultivated, Lodi offers a diverse portfolio of wines. While long renowned for its high-quality Zinfandel production, including an estimated 2,000 acres of pre-Prohibition own rooted vines, the area also produces award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Chardonnay. More recently, Lodi has been gaining consumer traction for its other exciting varietals such as Albariño, Tempranillo, Kerner, Gewürztraminer, Graciano and Vermentino, among many others.

2015 has seen a tremendous swell of support and recognition for the Lodi wine region. In addition to the prestigious GEELA award, Lodi was also selected in August 2015 to be the host for the 2016 Wine Bloggers Conference, the pre-eminent gathering of hundreds of wine bloggers and wine writing professionals who come together for educational sessions, networking and social gathering.

Vintage Eve Circa Dec. 2010: Kosher Wine

November 17, 2015 by evebushman

I’m challenging myself this week to learn more about kosher wines and basically soak your holidays past New Years.

1418755751103

I’ve had the kosher Manischewitz wine at a couple of Bris ceremonies: Fruit juice that a newborn boy could happily suckle off of a soft cloth for anesthetic purposes. I only tolerated it as that was all they were serving and the Mohel let me get up close to watch. But, what if you want to give a nice Kosher wine as a Hanukkah present or serve for any Jewish holiday?

Hhere is a more comprehensive report:

The internet site for the Kosher Wine Guy has recommendations, Head to Head taste tests and a list of wines that recently won awards at Vinitaly.

The Wine Spectator magazine’s website had these few highly rated offerings:

Golan Heights Gewürztraminer Galilee Yarden Heights Wine 2005, released just this past October, was rated 90 points and only priced at $23. Thick and rich, showing luscious flavors of glazed apricot, pineapple, baked apple and spice, with a very long and honeyed finish. Kosher. Drink now through 2015.

(But you might have trouble finding it at only 967 cases made. Yarden of Israel also makes the same varietal; but with even less availability.)

Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan Kosher 2000 & 2002 (A little pricy for $175 but sounds interesting.) Aromas of spice, earth and meat with just a hint of tobacco. Fruity. Full-bodied, with spicy, tar and earthy character. Very intense, almost funky. Long, velvety finish.

Château de Valandraud St.-Emilion Kosher 2001 – 2003: Subtle and multilayered on the nose with Indian spices, berries and raspberries. Full, silky and refined with lovely fruit and a medium finish. Very pretty. This has developed nicely. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. (Both I found available for purchase at bottleshop.com.)

Then I got an email from Martin Davidson, a wine distributor for Royal Wines, and hit the jackpot! With Kosher wines hailing from 10 different countries, and a local tasting room in nearby Oxnard, this may warrant a part 2 (Comments from readers will let me know if there is enough interest for me to travel to Oxnard)…but here’s what I have so far from Martin:

Our Californian wines are under the Herzog and Baron Herzog labels; Covenant has been made there too. On the East coast we do the local Kedem and import from France (Bordeaux and Burgundy) Italy, Spain, Portugal, Australia, NZ, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Hungary and of course Israel.

Once you have visited the winery you will see and taste the quality level we have ascended to (hopefully) and according to leading critics.

Specifically for Hanukah I would recommend a Bartenura Moscato, Teal Lake Sparkling Muscat or an Israeli Cab-Petit Verdot. Traditionally we look to pair with Latkes, Donuts and Light fare for the festivities.

Five Reasons to Hate Niagara Wine Country

July 30, 2015 by evebushman

Keep these in mind if planning a trip to the Niagara Peninsula

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont. — The tranquility of a vineyard, the sparkle of Lake Ontario in the late afternoon sun, the emerald slope of the Niagara escarpment make for a beautiful vista when enjoying the wares of Niagara’s VQA wineries.

“The wine experience in Niagara is about so much more than the view,” says Marcel Morgenstern, a Sommelier and national sales manager for PondView Estate Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. “But it may not all be roses and sunshine.”

And with that, Marcel offers the five reasons you will hate Niagara Wine Country.

pondview-winery-niagara-ontario-wines-f1

  1. The wines don’t all taste the same.

In Niagara, it’s not simply something red, something white, something sweet, something dry. If that is what you are seeking, you will be grossly disappointed at the selection of wines available from Niagara wineries. Really, who wants to have to choose between stunning Rieslings, summery fresh Pinot Grigios, rich Cabernet Franc, a wide range of Cabernet Merlots and everything from everyday sipping wines to age-worthy reserve wines for your wine collection? Then there are the unique and seasonal wines, such as rich Viognier (how do you pronounce that anyway?), Cabernet-based dry Roses and Gewurztraminer-Riesling blends. It’s too much choice!

I mean, you might have to invest a weekend of your time to spend in Niagara wine country to taste your way through all those wines.

  1. There are dirty farmers everywhere – not to mention the “rats!”

Just imagine, all the grapes these wineries use in their VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) wines are grown right there in wine country. There are grape farms and farmers everywhere! The lush green of the vineyards and the orchards will hurt your eyes after a while. No traffic jams and honking, just a tractor or harvester coming out of nowhere.

Don’t even start with the passionate winemakers and their dedicated crews of “cellar rats” turning the locally grown grapes from these vineyards into delicious wines that keep wine fans coming back for more.

  1. They are so damn accommodating all the time.

If you are used to the stereotypical big city taxi driver attitude, you will be hugely disappointed coming to Niagara Wine Country! People are just so welcoming and accommodating there. As you walk into one of the many wineries in Niagara, winery staff welcome you, ask about the types of wine you usually enjoy, make recommendations of what to try — and may even give you a tutored tasting if you’d like … and if that wasn’t enough, they will also give you background information on the whole wine region, recommend the best places for lunch or dinner and will ship your wine to your doorstep if you bought more wine than you can, want to, carry home.

  1. You fill up your camera’s memory card.

You better pack a few extra memory cards for your camera when you decide to visit this dreadful place! You’ll end up filling them up with endless numbers of pictures of you and your friends: in a vineyard holding a bunch of grapes, in front of an orange glow sunset in front of more grape vines, on the shore of Lake Ontario, holding a glass of wine, holding a bottle of wine, posing with the winemaker or winery owner, sitting on a winery patio with wine and charcuterie plate, standing in front of wine barrels, doing chocolate Icewine shooters or sitting in one of the restaurants enjoying Niagara’s local cuisine.

  1. These wineries are all about the $$’s and the bling.

Niagara’s wines love the bling! … awards that is. Not just from here in Canada, but on the big international stage at the world’s largest wine competitions in the U.K., France, Italy, the Far East … the list goes on. Our Niagara wines keep getting recognized for all the hard work that goes into growing the grapes and making these great wines. Canada is renowned around the world for its Icewines, but experts are quickly learning that the elegant cool climate white and red wines from this picturesque wine region hold their own in the ever growing wine market place.

You would think Niagara wineries would feel guilty about all this attention … but no. Instead, they are giving back to the local economy: When you buy a bottle of Ontario wine, it contributes $39.67 of economic impact to the local economy per bottle. That equates to a measly $3.3 billion in total economic impact to the Canadian economy. Who do these farmers, winery owners and winemakers think they are?

About PondView Estate Winery:

home-slide-1

Drawing on more than three generations of winemaking experience, PondView Estate Winery is one of the newest additions to the Four Mile Creek appellation in the heart of Niagara’s wine country. Family owned by Luciano and Adriana Puglisi, PondView crafts exceptional Ontario VQA wines rooted in an Italian heritage. Luciano’s enthusiasm and respect for the winemaking process, alongside his dedication and commitment to excellence, earned him the prestigious title of Grape King in 2008, awarded by the Ministryof Agriculture to the finest vineyard operator in Ontario. The secret to the success of PondView Estate Winery is the long-held belief of the Puglisi family: Great wine is a harmony of earth and vine.

Judging 101: The Long Beach Grand Cru AND THE WINNING WINE LIST

July 21, 2015 by evebushman

I was a little fretful…panicked is actually the right word, about judging the Long Beach Grand Cru for two days after only serving as a guest judge in the LA Wine Competition two years ago…once. I recognized the names of some of the judges, and personally knew quite a few, but I thought I better up my game and do some research.

I read Factors Considered in Wine Evaluation by Alexis Hartung (printed in the Winter Issue, 1999 AWS Journal Volume 31, No. 4 found online: http://www.bjcp.org/mead/Factors_Wine_Eval.pdf) and then I was also lucky enough to find the actual Judging Process that the Long Beach Grand Cru uses on their website. (It turned out that I was ready, even before doing the review work.)

My panel l to r - David Stevens, Joe Hart, Stephen Young and Mike Stepanovich.

Panel l to r – David Stevens, Joe Hart, Stephen Young and Mike Stepanovich.

Shenanigans?

There were no shenanigans during the judging process, but it WAS fun. All those numbered wine glasses crowding around me waiting to be swirled, sniffed, tasted and spat were also accompanied by the appropriate items to cleanse any palate: green olives, sliced gray beef, water crackers and waxy no-flavor cheese. (Good thing our meals were fully flavored!)

My assigned panel was led by David Stevens (Senior Wine Consultant, Davon International), and included Joe Hart (Hart Winery), Mike Stepanovich (Wine Journalist, Bakersfield, CA.) and Stephen H. Young (graduate of the American Wine Society Wine Judge Certification Program).

These knowledgeable gentleman, and the wine, made my nervousness fall away pretty quickly. Soon we were moving at a good pace. At the end of each round, ranging from 6 to a dozen separate tastes, we discussed our findings and came to a consensus if a wine received no medal, bronze, silver or gold.

There was so much thought and consideration in awarding each medal it made me pause, how often do you pause and consider buying a wine based on a medal? Do you consider it as much as you do a wine with a high numerical score? You are doing wineries a disservice to only consider one ranking body, in my now-educated opinion.

Each panel, there were 26 judges in all, had nearly 100 wines to judge on the first day, about half that they second, and finally did a round of sweepstakes “sweeps” to determine which of the Gold medals were all-around favorites of all the judges. Many of the entries and winners came from small producers outside of California. Made me think that a small producer making good wine should definitively enter the Long Beach Grand Cru.

There was a distinct level of camaraderie amongst the judges as some had been doing the Long Beach Grand Cru competition for 20+ years. It was an honor to join them that I hope to repeat annually.

Dinner, More Wine, and the Point of it All

Day 1 closed with a wonderful dinner and unlimited wine tasting (wines from the day and more) at Parker’s Lighthouse. Our private room was full and during the first hour or so many of the judges, Long Beach Grand Cru Board of Directors members and volunteers spilled out into the patio for a view of the Queen Mary.

Judges inside and out Parker's Lighthouse

It was then that a tall gentleman wearing a cowboy slipped a bottled of wine from Stolpman Vineyards onto the tasting table. It took me about a nanosecond to figure out who that was. Tom Stolpman is also on the Board of Directors. A second after that I learned that he met fellow board member, James McAdams, in law school in the 70s and the two practiced in the same Long Beach firm.

Executive Producer Kim Vu welcomed the diners and introduced organizer Magdalena “Maggie” Davis, who in turn thanked the volunteers. Judge and local SCV sommelier, George Skorka then stood up to say “(he received) dignity and kindness from volunteers, my life is better because we spend two days here.”

“An amazing crew has done this for 21 years and the Board of Directors of the Grand Cru thanks you,” Executive Director, Silvia Argueta said. “All of the money made from the event goes to the Legal Aid of Long Beach and the lawyers that dedicate themselves to poverty law. Long Beach has the second highest number of children living in poverty and they work to lower that number every year.”

Tom Stolpman commented that we need to reach out and help others by serving in city council, etc., as that helps the common good and that equals legal aid. “At the end of the day the message of tonight is that we all walk out of here thinking that we are doing better and maybe not enough. Thank you for feeling that.” It was a sobering thought. Riesling: The World’s Greatest White Winegrape?

April 6, 2015 by evebushman

Claiborne & Churchill Winery founder, Claiborne Thompson, ponders Riesling’s history and many merits

San Luis Obispo, CA – For over 30 years, Claiborne & Churchill Winery in California’s Edna Valley has quietly produced one of the most dependably delicious Dry Rieslings this side of Alsace, France. Always erudite, educational and entertaining, C&C founding winemaker Claiborne Thompson shares what he’s discovered about what many consider to be “the world’s greatest white winegrape.”

Claiborne_Churchill_LogoIs Riesling a German word? Any idea what the root of the word is, or its meaning?

Its name is a bit of a puzzle. It’s possibly related to the German word reissen, “to tear, to carve, to cut,” but attempts to explain this connection are pretty lame.

Where does the Riesling grape originally come from?

It’s origin is no doubt to be found in Germany, specifically the Rheingau. There is a reference to “riesslingen” vines in a document from 1435, written by a cellarmaster with the amusing name of Klaus Kleinfisch (“Littlefish”) to his boss, the Count of Katzenelnbogen (“Cat’s Elbow”). The whole story sounds to me like a Mel Brooks comedy sketch.

Do you know how old it is?

Really old, probably going back to Roman outposts along the Rhine.

How did you get into Riesling?

Well, both my wife Fredericka and I have connections to Germany, and Riesling is the German grape par excellence.  I first visited Germany when I was 17, so my first wine experience was with Riesling. Fredericka’s mother is German (from the Rheinland), so she no doubt has a bit of Riesling running through her veins.

How does Alsatian-style Riesling differ from German Riesling?

When we started Claiborne & Churchill, we took our inspiration more from the (once German, now French) province of Alsace, across the Rhine from Germany. In Alsace, Riesling is king; it is the most planted varietal there, and nowhere else in France do they allow it to be grown. The Rieslings from Alsace tend to be drier, more structured and full-bodied than those in Germany. They are definitely not “sweet sipping wines.” (Having said that, it must be pointed out that these days German Rieslings are getting drier and drier.)

Where does C&C Riesling come from?

At Claiborne & Churchill we source our Riesling grapes from two regions: (1) our own Edna Valley, including our Estate Vineyard, and (2) Monterey County, specifically the Arroyo Seco area, where cold weather produces intensely aromatic grapes.

What are some typical aromas and flavors associated with wine made from Riesling?

One of the great things about Riesling wines is how they reflect a sense of place, of terroir if you will. But what all Rieslings have in common (if grown and made properly) is an abundantly floral and fruity aroma in the nose and a wallop of bracing acidity on the palate. In its youth you might find hints of apple blossoms, of peaches, of honey. As a Riesling ages it takes on more depth of flavor, and often develops a bouquet referred to by the off-putting word “petrol.”

What are the challenges to making it?

Riesling is a bit of a challenge to grow, because it is a late ripener and fairly susceptive to rot (including the precious “noble rot”). The grapes need to be pressed slowly and long, to get the best juice. Fermentation should be cold.

How long between pick, bottling, and release?

Riesling can be bottled relatively soon after it is made, but it needs a bit of aging before release. It is unfortunately true that most Rieslings are released too early (including ours) because people prize the youthful fruitiness more than the more profound flavors that the patina of age gives. Oh well, each to his own!

How do you most enjoy Riesling?

Riesling is famous for being the most versatile of wines and the most food-friendly. We enjoy it by itself as an aperitif wine (especially if it has a tiny touch of residual sugar), but it really stands out on the dinner table. I love it with poultry (Chicken in Riesling is a standard Alsatian dish), and fish, particularly shellfish. I think Dungeness Crab and Dry Riesling is a match made in heaven.

What other regions are making Riesling that you enjoy? (New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, etc)

Outside California, Germany and Alsace, good Rieslings can be found in Oregon and Washington, in the Finger Lakes region of New York , and in Australia. Each Riesling bears the hallmarks of its place of origin.

Claiborne & Churchill will be releasing their 2014 Dry Riesling on May 1st.

About Claiborne & Churchill Winery
Founded in 1983 by Claiborne (Clay) Thompson and Fredericka Churchill, Claiborne & Churchill Vintners is a small, family-owned winery devoted to producing Alsatian-style wines in California’s pastoral Edna Valley appellation. For more information, please visit www.ClaiborneChurchill.com or phone 805.544.4066.
