Young Italian Winemakers Champion Sustainability and Innovation

March 10, 2022 by evebushman

NEW YORK (PRWEB) – Five days before the ministers of agriculture representing the world’s largest economies met in Florence, Italy, for a G20 summit, a group of young Italian wine professionals held a symposium of their own. AGIVI, the Association of Young Italian Wine Entrepreneurs, hosted the convention on Sept. 12, 2021, at the same city’s Palazzo Vecchio, to discuss some of the most pressing questions about the future of Italian wine. How would wine fit into the global drive toward sustainability, also a G20 focus? And, more broadly, how could the up-and-coming generation in the industry reach young wine lovers in an increasingly competitive global marketplace?

“Young people think, plan and work in a green mindset”, said Violante Gardini Cinelli Colombini, president of AGIVI, which is a branch of the national UIV (Unione Italiana Vini) and export sales manager of Casato Prime Donne winery in Montalcino. “From the vineyard to the cellar, ranging from the choice of packaging to that of transport to the services offered in the company, the initiatives of the new generations are increasingly developed from a sustainable perspective, with specific actions aimed at achieving objectives that are as respectful of the environment as possible.”

According to a survey made on the AGIVI members, 94% believe sustainability provides a decisive competitive edge, with nearly 70% choosing suppliers based in part on the sustainability of their proposals. Another survey presented at the convention found that 70% of millennial wine tourists would be more likely to visit wineries with ethical labor practices, and 70% favored companies that helped disadvantaged communities. Canned wines, carbon emissions and pesticide alternatives have also been hot topics in AGIVI’s ongoing dialogue about sustainability.

While AGIVI has been exploring environmental and social initiatives, its members have also been navigating new technologies in viticulture and sales, along with new platforms, customers and tastes—while preserving the heritage that has long made Italian wine unique. In 2021, AGIVI members gathered to exchange knowledge in regions like Umbria and Trentino; they contributed to social media webinars, and panels and tastings at Vinitaly and in New York. Along the way, they discussed creative enotourism, labeling and transparency tools like QR codes, and distribution platforms like e-commerce.

“Our job is very challenging, we never stop learning and the wine industry is in continuous development,” explained Emanuele Rocca, export sales manager of Rocca Vini, which includes estates in Piedmont and Puglia. Rocca cited the cultivation of new and “forgotten” varieties, waste reduction in production and packaging, the embrace of e-commerce and social media, an enhanced cellar door experience, and expansion into lesser-known regions like Salento (the “heel” of Italy’s boot) as new ways the company is carrying on the family tradition of innovation. “Our grandpa didn’t teach us to ride a bike but taught us interesting wine secrets,” said Rocca. Among younger drinkers, Rocca notices a movement toward lower-alcohol wines and, most encouraging, an increased interest in wine education.

“I’m optimistic,” said Rocca, “because I see the young generations focus on the quality of the product.”

NEW 8,000 Bottle Cellar in 15th century Florence Noble Home

December 27, 2021 by evebushman

Florence’s Golden View restaurant has emerged from a 14-month Covid-induced shutdown with a completely renovated design and mission as it prepares to celebrate 20 years of “golden views” over the Arno River and famed Ponte Vecchio in January 2022. Owner Tommaso Grasso teamed up with architect Nicola Maggiaioli from Studio Miarca to reimagine the 6,000 sq ft Golden View for the next 20 years, opening up the space to give every diner magical vistas of the river and to put the kitchen on full display for guests to see the artisan craftsmanship that goes into preparing an authentic Italian meal.

Besides the new open kitchen and incredible panoramas, the new Golden View boasts an 8,000 bottle wine cellar, making it the second largest winery in Florence, in the adjacent former 15th century home belonging to the Florentine family of Capponi. Renovated by architect Marta Sansoni the naturally temperature-controlled space is perfect for storage of the vast $1 million collection that includes extensive vintages of mostly Italian wines, with some Bordeaux for balance.  Carefully managed by Golden View’s sommelier and “wine hunter” Paolo Miano, vertical selections of the great Super Tuscans like Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Solaia, Tignanello, along with those of “Brunelli” as Biondi Santi, Soldera, Poggio di Sotto abound underlining the love for tradition and territory. The wine cellar is available for private tastings, as well as intimate private dinners for up to 12 people.

“This place is a home to me, a space in which I express my passion linked not only to food, but to wine and the world of art,” noted owner Tommaso Grasso who has worked at every position in the restaurant.  “With the renovation, I wanted to offer guests full transparency into the artistry that goes into creating an authentic Italian dining experience by showcasing our talented staff as much as the view.”

The 180-seat restaurant (140 under Covid rules) has been transformed to enhance the “golden” light coming from the banks of the Arno, as well as to shine a bright one on the culinary team led by chef Paolo Secci.  The Sardinian-born chef takes pride in combining his love for seafood with the local Tuscan bounty of meat and vegetables.  Highlights include: Suckling pig terrine, Salted potatoes and confit artichokes (€16);  Aged Carnaroli risotto, saffron, forest mushrooms and 24 months aged Parmigiano (€22); Linguine with clams with Cabras mullet bottarga (€24); Tuscan suckling lamb: seared loin, roasted belly and kidney, with braised artichokes and vanilla onions (€34); Miso marinated white sturgeon with soutè potatoes, turnip greens and fish sauce with fennel flowers (€28).

The Golden View Wine Experience – a wine focused overnight stay
Owner Tommaso Grosso will share his love and passion for Italian wines as he guides guests on an exclusive two-day Golden View Wine Experience.  The one-of-a-kind experience will woe even the most discerning oenophiles with two nights in a Golden View Suite complete with original frescoed ceilings, a private wine tasting for two in the 15th century cellar, a Wine Pairing dinner for two at Golden View and a special Vineyard trip to Montalcino with a wine lunch led by owner Tomasso Grasso. The limited Golden View Wine Experience starts at 2500 Euros per couple.
Open Wednesday through Sunday, reservations can be made via the restaurant’s website www.goldenview.it.

Montalcino’s Tenuta Luce releases 25th Vintage of Flagship Luce

August 27, 2020 by evebushman

MONTALCINO, ITALY (PRWEB) – Tenuta Luce, one of Tuscany’s most esteemed wine estates, celebrates the launch of the 25th vintage of its flagship wine Luce, the first blend of native grape Sangiovese and Merlot ever produced in the Montalcino area of Tuscany.

President of Tenuta Luce, Lamberto Frescobaldi commented: “Tenuta Luce is an utterly unique wine estate and the arrival of the 25th vintage of Luce provides an unrivalled opportunity to remind ourselves of that passionate commitment first marked 25 years ago in Montalcino by Vittorio Frescobaldi, together with Robert Mondavi, to create a wine truly unique to the area.” The Frescobaldi Group became the sole owner of Tenuta Luce in 2005.

“It all began when, together with the Mondavi family, we found a ‘home’ in Montalcino, that growing area of world-class wines,” recounts Lamberto Frescobaldi. “We started from a property, in the southwest quadrant of Montalcino, that exhibited the perfect qualities we needed to bring our dream into fruition. It’s close proximity to the sea, exposure to the sun, and peculiar combination of soils made it a magnetic spot.

“The local traditions, plus the long experience of Vittorio, Ferdinando, and Leonardo Frescobaldi were valuable road-signs for us,” Frescobaldi continues. “The challenge was to respect and learn from that tradition, yet to fashion a wine that would be a distinctly personal interpretation. In the sense that it exerted a powerful attraction for individuals of talent; they, with their expertise and commitment, gave life to producing Luce, year after year.”

The creators of Luce have successfully guarded this intangible heritage with the most profound respect – an uncompromisable foundation of their value system – that entails respect for the earth that with its fecund life-force offers its treasures to Montalcino; respect for the beauty of nature, that harmonious landscape which inspires those who gaze on it; respect for individuals, who have felt the attractive force of Luce and there, at one with it; and, finally, respect for the intelligence and questioning of those who have continued to support its vision.

The 2017 vintage anniversary bottle is dressed in a quote by Vittorio Frescobaldi:
“To know and respect the earth, the vineyards, and the individuals who work them is an essential part of what we do. Human intelligence engages in dialogue the beauty of nature, and the expression of terroir melds into Luce’s own rare interpretation of it. And voilà, the harmony of Luce.”

About Luce 2017
The 2017 growing season started with a cool spring that brought adequate rainfall, followed by a warm, sunny summer relieved by beneficent night-time breezes and rain in mid-September. These conditions delivered a relatively limited crop but of extremely high quality, and both the Merlot and Cabernet were harvested at peak ripeness.

Luce 2017 appears an intense, near-impenetrable ruby red. A rich, multi-layered bouquet alternates wild red berryfruit with intriguing hints of incense. That aromatic wealth continues onto the palate, supported by a vein of elegant tannins that sculpt an enviable structure, resulting in a wine of unmatched balance.

Wine Spectator Reveals Selection of OperaWine 2019 Italian Producers

January 20, 2019 by evebushman

VERONA, Italy (PRWEB) – Wine Spectator’s senior editor and tasting director Alison Napjus announced the 103 wineries that will pour their signature wines during OperaWine 2019, Vinitaly’s opening gala to be held in collaboration with the prestigious wine magazine in Verona, Italy, on Saturday 6 April. As is been customary for the past three years, the announcement has been made in Verona during the wine business convention wine2wine organized by Veronafiere, Vinitaly, and Vinitaly International. Napjus proclaimed the 103 finest Italian producers for 2019 on Monday 26 November at wine2wine in the presence of Maurizio Danese (President of Veronafiere), Giovanni Mantovani (CEO of Veronafiere), Gianni Bruno (Area Manager of Vinitaly), and Stevie Kim (Managing Director of Vinitaly International), and called the wineries’ representatives on stage for the traditional group photograph.

Every year, Wine Spectator’s selection of Italian wineries strives to showcase both the high quality and regional diversity of Italian wines. For the 2019 selection Wine Spectator chose 15 producers that had never participated before. Moreover, as Napjus pointed out in her announcement speech, the Montalcino area and its Brunello producers have undergone the most significant change in the magazine’s selection process: “To keep the tasting interesting and fresh we change part of that roster of producers every year. Over the course of 7 OperaWine, we highlighted more than 200 different producers and this year 15 producers will be pouring at OperaWine for the very first time. The biggest change in this line up is seen from Brunello. All 6 of the Brunello producers who poured at last year’s OperaWine will not be there in 2019, instead we will see 6 faces who are making equally outstanding examples from Montalcino. We also have 7 wineries returning to OperaWine after a hiatus of a year or two and all together it’s a beautiful group of wines with representation from every region of Italy, encompassing more than 70 red wines, 15 whites, and 10 sparkling and dessert wines, and including bottlings all the way back to the 1998 vintage.”

The 100 top Italian wines have been selected among 2600 samples from Italy that Napjus along with Wine Spectator Senior Editor Bruce Sanderson received in 2018. Criteria for the selection are the quality of the wines as showcased during the rigorous blind tasting process the magazine is famous for as well as, in Napjus’s words, “leadership, historical significance, diversity for the tasting itself.” The wines will be poured to a select cohort of press and trade professionals during the 8th edition of OperaWine Grand Tasting that will take place in the heart of Verona city center in the historic Palazzo Gran della Guardia on Saturday 6 April 2019.

Wine Spectator’s list of the 2019 100 best Italian wine producers is available below and additional information on OperaWine can be accessed on its website.
