Vintage Eve 7/2018: What Did I Find at The Latest Garagiste “Urban Exposure” in Santa Monica?

February 9, 2021 by evebushman

Garagiste festival co-founders Stewart McLennan and Doug Minnick (locals know Doug from his shared wine tasting room in Downtown Newhall, Double Trouble) as well as countless experienced volunteers, succeeded once again to bring nearly 50 small producing wineries under one roof – Santa Monica Bay Women’s Club – to be discovered by wine lovers.

Left to right: Erik Siering, Mark Wasserman, me, Paul Quinn and James Schreiner.

(Photo: My favorite people – and wine – at Vinemark Cellars and TW Ferm Co! — left to right: Erik Siering, Mark Wasserman, me, Paul Quinn and James Schreiner.)

Urban Exposure features artisan winemakers from across California, including Paso Robles, Santa Barbara County, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, Los Angeles County and more. The Garagiste Festival is Los Angeles’ only wine festival that exclusively features high quality wines from commercial California ‘garagiste’ winemakers, offering Angelenos a unique opportunity to discover hard-to-find wineries, taste hundreds of their wines, and meet the winemakers…Over 70% of the wineries pouring at the festival do not have tasting rooms, and most are not on “wine country” maps and difficult to find except at the Garagiste Festival.

Pretty sure I’ve covered every Garagiste event that has been produced in Los Angeles for the past five years, as well as a couple in Paso Robles. I look forward to trying the new vintages from wineries we’ve discovered before, and wines from new wineries added to the event. This year I tried to taste as many Rare and Reserve offerings as I could as well, before palate fatigue set in.

Will now share a few of my take-aways (oh how I wish I could’ve taken some of the wine home with me!) from the event. (Too thirsty to read on? Shoot over here to see the event photos.)

Wineries Tastes (I have only noted the wines I enjoyed – keep in mind I did not try every wine that was offered at every winery table.)

Bellante Family Winery: 2016 Viognier, Los Olivos, Camp 4 Vineyard, and 14.9% alcohol.

Betwixt Wines: 2012 Grenache, Boer Vineyard, Sonoma (sold out) and 2010 Syrah.

Byron Blatty: Mark’s brand new Rose of Grenache, LA County, $27 and 2016 Tremor blend of Grenache, Syrah and Merlot, LA County, $58.

Caliza Vineyards: 2013 Estate Grenache, Paso Robles, only 50 cases made, $75

Cutruzzola Vineyards: 2012 Riesling, Riven Rock Vineyard Estate, San Luis Obispo County, 12.5% alcohol, 450 cases, $28 and the 2015 Riesling with 128 cases and $30.

Dusty Nabor: “K” Super Secret Syrah, Ballard Canyon, 27 cases, $45 and 2016 Super Secret Grenache, Ballard Canyon, 27 cases, $45.

Frisco Cellars: 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Coast, Yattes and DiPietro Vineyards, $56.

Gordenker Wines: 2012 Sylvia Drive Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, $68. (Parker gave this wine 93 points.)

Hoi Polloi: Everything: Pinot Noirs and Syrah! Love Minnick and happy to support local business!

Kaleidos Wines: 2014 Praying Mantis, 100% Syrah, Paso Robles, 88 cases, 15.6% alcohol, $65.

Leverage: 2014 Trajectory, GSM, Paso Robles, 85 cases, $60.

Parmeson: 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, 149 cases, $60.

Pulchella Winery: My all-time favorite local winery was serving up their Rose of Tannat, “Rogue Rose of Tannat”, Bella Colina Vineyards, 120 cases, $35 as well as six 2016 releases.

Record Family Wines: 2013 Reserve Merlot, Paso Robles, 100 cases, $35.

Siela Wines: 2015 Chardonnay Dry Creek Valley. (SF Chronicle Wine Competition gave this a Silver in 2017, I would’ve given it a Gold.)

TW Fermentations: 2014 “Cultivator” Bordeaux Blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Paso Robles, 14.7% alcohol, $68 and a Malbec with 14.9% alcohol.

Vinemark Cellars: All 2014s: Reserve Pinot, $41; Cabernet Sauvignon, $32; “Mezzanotte” Primitivo/Petite Sirah blend, $32.

Volatus Wine: 2015 White Rhone Blend, $25; 2016 Bolter Rose blend of Tannat, Grenache and Viognier, $14; and Reserve Red blend of Syrah and Malbec, Paso Robles, 65 cases, $45.

Grown in Los Angeles: Eve Gets A Taste of LA Wine

March 13, 2020 by evebushman

What a treat! Tasting from only four wineries – that specialize in making wine from LA County grapes! I knew three of the four already from past tastings, but this time it was a true focus on what they can do as we compared each. Below is the invite, wine list (hyperlinks go to their Facebook pages) and my notes. Photos are here.

Jasper Dickson at the helm of his winery. (Co-owner Amy Luftig Viste not pictured.)

Invitation

Come join The Los Angeles Vintner’s Association at Angeleno Wine Company …for an extraordinary tasting of locally grown, Los Angeles wine! We’ve gathered four amazing local wineries, and assembled a line-up of 10+ incredible wines, all grown right here in Los Angeles County. Come meet the winemakers, and discover the true potential of local wine as you taste your way through this diverse collection of styles, single varietals, and blends.

Participating wineries include: Angeleno Wine Company, Acri Wine Co, Byron Blatty Wines, and Cavaletti Vineyards.

Acri Wine Company – This was a new winery for me to try. All were barrel samples but showed great fruit and potential. Especially the 2019 Sangiovese, also from the Antelope Valley. My husband liked the depth in the 2018 Syrah and likewise thought it would cellar nicely.

2018 Syrah, Antelope Valley

2019 Zinfandel Barrel Sample, Antelope Valley

2019 Sangiovese, Antelope Valley.

Angeleno Wine Company – Our host winery for the event, about 60 minutes away and definitely worth a visit. Besides the list below I also snagged a sample of their chilled orange wine – made orange by skin contact with these Spanish/Portuguese grapes I was unfamiliar with: Treixadura, Godello and Loureiro. These same varietals were also in the White Field Blend I favored, with the addition of Albariño.

2017 White Field Blend, Sierra Pelona Valley

2018 Bike Path Red (also served a little chilled, blend of Tempranillo and Grenache) Sierra Pelona Valley

2017 Grenache, Sierra Pelona Valley (This is from the Alonso Family Vineyards. They also make their own label, and by “they” I mean Juan Alonso. He has made his own wine for many years, and is the longtime owner of Le Chene.)

Byron Blatty Wines – Mark Blatty was there charming the guests, as usual, suffice it to say he had the busiest table. My favorite wine in his lineup was the 2016 Evenfall Red (I jokingly call it my namesake!) blend of Tempranillo and Petite Sirah. His Syrah and Malbec garnered a lot of attention, and an extra special pour of his soon-to-be released proprietary red – only 23 cases – of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot, was powerful! Stay tuned for that release. I predict this to be my next favorite from Byron Blatty.

2016 Agenda Syrah, Los Angeles County

2016 Evenfall Red, Los Angeles County

2017 Pragmatic Malbec, Los Angeles County

Cavaletti Vineyards – With a tasting room in nearby Moorpark, this is a winery to visit. Besides the wines listed below owner/winemaker Patrick Kelley also shared a 2018 Nebbiolo. I enjoyed them all, with special nods to the Cab and Nebbiolo, really fine fruit that will develop with a little more aging. I bought two of his Rose, a blend of Tempranillo and Grenache, as it was very good and the price was only about $25 per bottle.

2018 109 Mile Rosé, Los Angeles County

2018 Swayze (not Patrick) Grenache, Antelope Valley

2018 Whispering Bells Cabernet Sauvignon, Malibu Coast

Paso: Learning About and Tasting With Parrish Family Vineyards

November 23, 2018 by evebushman

I could swear that I had been to Parrish Family Vineyards before for a dinner they hosted for the Cab Collective. However the property on Adelaida Road was new for me as it was for everyone else, only having been opened this past year. It nagged at me for about a nanosecond, then I was quickly caught up in everything this new discovery held for me. (One of which was seeing former SCVer Denise Criste living the dream, having moved to Paso and now working in the tasting room at Parrish!)

Took some photos of the calcareous stonework that contributed not only to a large wall but also to the terroir of the wines, and some of the bright red umbrellas – that could be seen from the road below – that sheltered many inviting groups of tables on the grounds overlooking vineyards.

The tasting room was welcoming. With many different cushiony seats to choose from, we learned that this would be a theme throughout. There were member’s only rooms, meeting rooms, dining rooms adorned with leather seating, balcony seating – the inside and outside seating options seemed endless. We learned that many people would move from one spot to another to enjoy their tasting, or to linger over a bottle for part of their day, some even circling back to Parrish for a second visit the same day as they are the only winery on Adelaida open until 6pm.

Membership options began with as little as a four bottle allotment and allowed for nearly monthly gatherings where you could reserve the exact spot you wanted to sit – I could definitely see a draw for a growing numbers of members.

We were shown a wall of photos and memorabilia that flanked both sides of the entrance to the tasting room that every guest will pass through. These items told a bit of a story of Earl Henderson, the grandfather of existing owner David Parrish, who had a love for golf (there is a small putting green for you to partake in the game if you so desire) and began cultivating grapes before prohibition.

David, before taking the mantle, was known for his work in trellising. At one point he had 24 patents for different trellis types for different fruits. He has seven active now. The winery made their first vintage in 2006. Coppola, L’Aventure, Clos Solene and others buy up their grapes. Learn more about Earl Henderson and David Parrish here.

Wines Tasting

While we toured and learned about Parrish we tasted through some of their wines. Bought a couple of bottles for home as well:

A crisp 2017 Sauvignon Blanc; 2016 Chardonnay with a lovely amount of oak; the nicely balanced 2014 Silken – named for how a member described as silky – Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon blend that my husband bought; an extremely approachable 2014 Petite Sirah that I had to buy for home as we don’t often find one we love; 2014 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from the Creston vineyard property; 2015 Petite Sirah I like almost as much as the 2014; 2015 Silken blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and a tiny bit of Syrah; 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2014 Zinfandel that was really mellow for a Zin but damn fine just the same.

Parrish Family Vineyards, 3590 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446, (805) 286-4028 www.parrishfamilyvineyard.com Open from 11 to 6pm daily – the only winery open until 6pm on Adelaida Road.

Perlis Picks: GARAGISTE MIXER

December 12, 2015 by evebushman

Hard to believe that this is already the 5th vintage of the Garagiste Festival held in Paso Robles every year since 2011. We reported on it back then and have continued to keep Eve’s Wine 101 readers updated on the Paso event as well as sister events in Solvang and Los Angeles.

Enrique Torres of Diablo Paso

Enrique Torres of Diablo Paso

As the years have gone by, the Paso Robles event has expanded into a multi-day extravaganza, with winemaker dinners, seminars, mixers and, of course, the main event. Attendees can buy the entire package or opt to pick and choose from the menu of choices.

This year, we weren’t unable to attend the main event due to a previous commitment. Instead, my wife Karen and I chose the “mixer” on Friday night at Broken Earth winery in Paso Robles. At what might have been the steal of the weekend, this tasting was really a combination of two things…

The Garagiste Festival started out primarily as an event showcasing the small wineries of Paso Robles, although even at the beginning there were participants from out of the area. As the festival has expanded, especially with the addition of the Solvang and Los Angeles events, and became known as one of the premium California annual wine tastings, more participants come from outside of the Paso Robles area.

The Friday evening mixer highlighted the out-of-town wineries. Participants (Of those I tasted, ** indicates my favorites of the evening):

**Cholame Vineyard (Central Coast)

**Erin E. Wines (Napa and Sonoma)

Flywheel (Monterey)

Holman Cellars (Napa Valley)

Incindium Wines (Napa Valley)

Lynch Wines (Sierra Foothills)

**Mattina Fiore (Central Coast)

Murder Ridge (Mendocino Ridge)

Starfield Vineyards (Napa)

Theopolis Vineyards (Anderson Valley)

**Two Shepherds (Sonoma)

Turiya (Central Coast)

But that’s not all…

A select group of Paso Robles wineries participated in this special event, tasked with pouring one “rare & reserve wine” by each winery –

**Alta Colina [Library] 2011 Block 2 Bio Syrah

Artisan Uprising [Pre-release] 2014 Tempranillo

**Ascension Cellars [Pre-release] 2013 “Trinity” GSM Blend

Bon Niche Cellars [Pre-release] 2012 “Chemin” Bordeaux Blend

Caldera Cuvee [Library – 1st vintage] 2009 “The Blend”

Caliza Winery [Library] 2011 “Cohort” Tempranillo/Rhone Blend

Deno Wines [Reserve] 2011 Zinfandel / GSM Blend

**Diablo Paso [Library] 2013 Garnacha

**Dubost Ranch [Club Only] 2012 Petite Sirah

Felten Cellars [Barrel Sample] 2013 Tempranillo

**Hoyt Family Vineyards [Library] 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon

**Kaleidos Winery [Library] 2002 Syrah

**MCV Vines [Club Only] 2013 “Black” Petite Sirah / Tannat / Petit Verdot

Powell Mountain Cellars [Library] 2010 Pinnacle Blend

**Prizm Winery [Pre-release] 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon

Ranchero Cellars [Library] 2011 “Revolver” Syrah/Carignan

Ranchita Canyon [Library] 2010 Old Vine Petite Sirah

Rendarrio Vineyards [Library] 2006 Syrah

Soaring Hawk Vineyards [Barrel Sample] 2013 Syrah

**Stanger Vineyards [Barrel Samples]

Vinemark Cellars [Reserve] 2012 Pinot Noir, Paso Robles

**Vines on the Marycrest [Club Only] 2013 “Spanish Bombs” Tempranillo Blends

Vino Vargas [Reserve] 2012 Pinot Noir, Russian River

Some of these, such as Alta Colina, Caliza, Kaleidos, Rendarrio, Vines on the Marycrest, Ranchero Cellars and Stanger, have been Garagiste participants since the first year.

Rounding things out, Bristol Ciders of Lone Madrone Winery was pouring hard cider.

In spite of all these great wines being poured, perusing the Garagiste website makes me feel that I should have attended the main event also. Hopefully, next year we’ll make a weekend out of it.

Perlis Picks: The 2015 San Francisco International Wine Competition

October 17, 2015 by evebushman

The San Francisco International Wine Competition has been around since 1980, so they must be doing something right. Headed by James Beard Award winner Anthony Dias Blue and judged by somewhat of a Who’s Who of the wine world elite, this year’s event took place at Hotel Nikko in June.

home_background[Speaking of wine judges, I’m thinking of starting a “Where’s George?” contest so readers can pick out George Skorka’s picture at all the places he shows up. One of SCV’s favorite wine experts, he is seemingly everywhere, and, yes, he was a judge at this event.]

After the competition, they take their show on the road, along with their sister event The San Francisco World Spirits Competition, to showcase for the media and trade the current Double Gold Medal Winners of both events. The tour is national, starting in San Francisco, with stops along the way that include Washington DC, Las Vegas, New York City and Miami. Fortunately for us, the first stop after leaving San Francisco was at Ocean Prime restaurant in Beverly Hills. [“Where’s George?” players please note that he was here at the tasting.]

Eve’s Wine 101’s Eve Bushman focused primarily on the spirits, which you can read about in the SCV Beacon. My wife Karen and I tasted through many of the wines being offered. These were some of the highlights for us…

Cass Winery – 2014 Viognier, Paso Robles, USA. ($24) Karen enjoyed the long smooth finish of this one.

Cholame Vineyard – 2012 Chardonnay, Santa Barbara, USA ($32) This had a good mouthfeel, according to Karen.

TAO Vineyards – 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Los Angeles, USA ($28) TAO, based in the Agoura Hills, was the surprise of the show for me. I’m looking forward to tasting their entire lineup.

Las Positas Vineyards – 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate, Reserve, Livermore Valley, USA ($65) Wines like this one are really improving the reputation of the Livermore Valley.

Vasco Urbano Wine Company – 2013 Grenache, Norm, Marina Ranch, Livermore Valley, USA ($42) Another excellent Livermore winery, part of the Nottingham Cellars group which I enjoyed at the Family Winemakers event awhile back.

LANGETWINS Winery – 2011 Premium Bordeaux Blend, Midnight Reserve, Lodi, USA ($30) I normally think of Zinfandel when I think of Lodi, but this blend of Cabernet, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot was excellent.

Cameron Hughes – 2012 Red Blend, Lot 447, Lake County, USA ($13) Negociant Cameron Hughes has a reputation for releasing tasty wines at good prices, but this blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah is an absolute steal.

Canihan Family Cellars – 2011 Syrah, Exuberance, Canihan Estate Vineyard, Sonoma County, USA ($49) This cool climate Syrah was the star of the tasting for me. A great example of what a Syrah is supposed to taste like.

Even though we were there primarily to report on the wine, we couldn’t leave without trying at least one spirit, the baijiu from Shui Jing Fang, a clear spirit from China. We enjoyed both the taste and the 600+ year history of the distillery.

Thanks to Ocean Prime for hosting and providing the noshes of tuna tartar, shrimp cocktail and braised short ribs.

You can check out all the winners on the website. The big takeaway for me, in spite of my favorite wine being from Sonoma, was the number of winners from less recognized areas like Livermore and, of all places, Agoura Hills. Time to get out of your comfort zone and explore.

Judging 101: The Long Beach Grand Cru AND THE WINNING WINE LIST

July 21, 2015 by evebushman

I was a little fretful…panicked is actually the right word, about judging the Long Beach Grand Cru for two days after only serving as a guest judge in the LA Wine Competition two years ago…once. I recognized the names of some of the judges, and personally knew quite a few, but I thought I better up my game and do some research.

I read Factors Considered in Wine Evaluation by Alexis Hartung (printed in the Winter Issue, 1999 AWS Journal Volume 31, No. 4 found online: http://www.bjcp.org/mead/Factors_Wine_Eval.pdf) and then I was also lucky enough to find the actual Judging Process that the Long Beach Grand Cru uses on their website. (It turned out that I was ready, even before doing the review work.)

My panel l to r - David Stevens, Joe Hart, Stephen Young and Mike Stepanovich.

Panel l to r – David Stevens, Joe Hart, Stephen Young and Mike Stepanovich.

Shenanigans?

There were no shenanigans during the judging process, but it WAS fun. All those numbered wine glasses crowding around me waiting to be swirled, sniffed, tasted and spat were also accompanied by the appropriate items to cleanse any palate: green olives, sliced gray beef, water crackers and waxy no-flavor cheese. (Good thing our meals were fully flavored!)

My assigned panel was led by David Stevens (Senior Wine Consultant, Davon International), and included Joe Hart (Hart Winery), Mike Stepanovich (Wine Journalist, Bakersfield, CA.) and Stephen H. Young (graduate of the American Wine Society Wine Judge Certification Program).

These knowledgeable gentleman, and the wine, made my nervousness fall away pretty quickly. Soon we were moving at a good pace. At the end of each round, ranging from 6 to a dozen separate tastes, we discussed our findings and came to a consensus if a wine received no medal, bronze, silver or gold.

There was so much thought and consideration in awarding each medal it made me pause, how often do you pause and consider buying a wine based on a medal? Do you consider it as much as you do a wine with a high numerical score? You are doing wineries a disservice to only consider one ranking body, in my now-educated opinion.

Each panel, there were 26 judges in all, had nearly 100 wines to judge on the first day, about half that they second, and finally did a round of sweepstakes “sweeps” to determine which of the Gold medals were all-around favorites of all the judges. Many of the entries and winners came from small producers outside of California. Made me think that a small producer making good wine should definitively enter the Long Beach Grand Cru.

There was a distinct level of camaraderie amongst the judges as some had been doing the Long Beach Grand Cru competition for 20+ years. It was an honor to join them that I hope to repeat annually.

Dinner, More Wine, and the Point of it All

Day 1 closed with a wonderful dinner and unlimited wine tasting (wines from the day and more) at Parker’s Lighthouse. Our private room was full and during the first hour or so many of the judges, Long Beach Grand Cru Board of Directors members and volunteers spilled out into the patio for a view of the Queen Mary.

Judges inside and out Parker's Lighthouse

It was then that a tall gentleman wearing a cowboy slipped a bottled of wine from Stolpman Vineyards onto the tasting table. It took me about a nanosecond to figure out who that was. Tom Stolpman is also on the Board of Directors. A second after that I learned that he met fellow board member, James McAdams, in law school in the 70s and the two practiced in the same Long Beach firm.

Executive Producer Kim Vu welcomed the diners and introduced organizer Magdalena “Maggie” Davis, who in turn thanked the volunteers. Judge and local SCV sommelier, George Skorka then stood up to say “(he received) dignity and kindness from volunteers, my life is better because we spend two days here.”

“An amazing crew has done this for 21 years and the Board of Directors of the Grand Cru thanks you,” Executive Director, Silvia Argueta said. “All of the money made from the event goes to the Legal Aid of Long Beach and the lawyers that dedicate themselves to poverty law. Long Beach has the second highest number of children living in poverty and they work to lower that number every year.”

Tom Stolpman commented that we need to reach out and help others by serving in city council, etc., as that helps the common good and that equals legal aid. “At the end of the day the message of tonight is that we all walk out of here thinking that we are doing better and maybe not enough. Thank you for feeling that.” It was a sobering thought. Paso Robles Cab Collective- En Primeur, Current and Reserve Tasting

May 9, 2014 by evebushman

In this, the second annual Cab Collective, now called the Paso Robles Cab Collective, the media was given a multi-day schedule.  I planned on resting my head for two nights at the Hammersky farmhouse, after days that would be spent doing barrel tasting of the 2013 vintages, vintner panel discussions, library tastings, interviewing winemakers over our meals and culminating with a return visit to Justin Vineyards for a press BBQ.  So lets get this party started!

(For this 8-page story I decided to divide it up by sharing the wine tastings on the Eve’s Wine 101 and the wine paired dinners in the Eve’s Wine 101 column – on the same day, 5/9/14 – in the SCV Beacon.  The final installment, the Vintner’s Panel Discussion, will appear on this website on 5/16.)

wine glass line up cab collectiveAll we knew was that we were to meet at the Paso Robles Inn Ballroom to start, in what quickly morphed into being called “Cab Camp”, with barrel tastings from the as-yet-unreleased 2013 vintage.

En Primeur Tasting is just a fancy name for Barrel Tasting.  With most only having 4-6 months in barrels, with another 12 or more to go, it is quite a test of the palate to discern what the future wine may taste like.  I was able to pick out some various notes of oak, cigar, chocolate, red to blue fruit and tannin, though specific fruits such as blueberry to fig took some time and contemplation.  And finding blueberry now may translate to fig later anyway.

(Two hours later we were to taste the current vintages, and then reserve wines, my notes on that are included below.  I have to admit my palate was fatigued after the barrel tasting, and many of us commented that they may want to plan it differently next year.  This would come to be our ONLY comment.  The event was that stellar.)

En Primeur, Current and Reserve Tasting

Of special interest to me was Adelaida as I was going to dine with the winemaker later.  I learned that their growth has been “even with Paso” in that they started with the popular bold Zinfandels in 1981 and then moved over to Cabernet Sauvignon.  I enjoyed the ’10 Cab for its gamut of red to blue fruit, and later, an ’03.

Another winery I would learn more from later over a meal was Ancient Peaks. They had a popular $15 retail 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, but I fell more for their 2010 Oyster Ridge that was predominantly Petit Verdot.  Later, during the reserve tasting, we enjoyed the ’07 Cab and ’07 Oyster Ridge blend of Petit Verdot, Petit Sirah and Merlot.  Winemaker Mike Sinor called it “The best of the best in the vineyard.”  (More on both of these first two wineries later.)

I finally got to meet Calcareous winemaker Jason Joyce (see earlier review here of his wines and how I had missed him before) serving his 2013 York Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend with notes of chocolate and dark plums.  Joyce said the wine would see another 30 months in barrel before a 2016 bottling.

Cass winemaker Ted Plemons never fails to entertain.  His barrel sample of a Cab blend of clone 8 and clone 33, with 6 months in barrel, was filled with fruit and smoke.  Plemons commented that he thought too many people spit out their tastes as they had to feel the wine, deep in the throat, to get the full taste.  He himself will taste and “take notes until we can’t.”

I saw owner/winemaker Michael Mooney of Chateau Margene over his 100% new French oak Cab barrel sample and look forward to trying more of his wines.  Mooney was the one I first heard from about the Cab Collective three years ago during a Paso tasting in Culver City.  He was very excited about the new group forming, things they were learning from each other and planning their first event.

Clautiere Vineyard shared their ’11 Bordeaux BDX blend of Cab, Cab Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot.  I learned that Clautiere believed that Malbec would be more of an interest in future vintages.

It was very popular around the DAOU Vineyards table.  Winemaker and Facebook friend Daniel Daou was holding court, definitely one of the buzz-making wineries for their Bordeaux blends.  We barrel tasted the Soul of a Lion blend and later returned for the ’11 Cab.  And still later, I returned to a taste of the ’09 Reserve Cab with 75% Cab, 12% Cab Franc, 10% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.  It was one of my favorites of the day for its balance, spice and exceptional mountain fruit.

At Eberle I asked to try Gary Eberle’s last wine that he had made, ’07 Love and Kisses Cab.  The wine’s name was an ode to his final efforts.  I noted a gentle sweetness and plum red

berries.

I enjoyed reconnecting with winemaker Kevin Sass and tasting room manager Tony Quealy at Halter Ranch Vineyard over a barrel tasting and current vintage of Ancestor.  The blend is one of my favorites from the winery, and the new vintage had all of my favorite things: chocolate, dark fruit and tannins all in balance. Later, when I got to sample the ’10 and ’08 Ancestor, both had the same chocolate and dark fruit notes, both were faves of the day.

Slight Segue: We are staying at the Hammersky Inn.  As I am transcribing my notes this morning I’m enjoying a cup of French press coffee, and a view that starts with my husband sitting at the kitchen table with me and beyond to a porch swing, then the barn, tasting room, lush green lawn, vines, rose bushes, birds, rock walls and stately trees.  The Inn is nearly 100 years old, and the bedrooms are richly decorated; the bathrooms filled with aromatic lotions and soaps.  I highly recommend trying the different overnight accommodations in Paso, hotels to Inns.

At the event Lauren Tinnin, who we hope to see again in the Hammersky tasting room, impressed us with their ’10 Bordeaux blend called Party of Four, with Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and only 11% Cab.  Later we returned and met up with friendly (and funny – he told me a skunk got into the farmhouse and we’d be spending the night in the barn!) owner Doug Hauck who poured us samples of ’08 Open Invitation Zinfandel and Merlot blend with a very chocolaty nose, a very nicely structured ’07 “Limited Resource” Cab and a fruity ’10 Zin.  We enjoyed that same Zin again over a roasted pig BBQ at Justin Winery that night.  (We also had a nice long chat, and several wines to review, look for my story on HammerSky alone in a later story!)

At Jada my fave – maybe of the whole day – was the ’11 Jack of Hearts that was a blend of 62% Petit Verdot, 31% Cab, 7% Merlot.  This is a winery I noted to visit.

At J. Lohr we were lucky enough to try the ’06, ’07 and ’10 Cuvee POM which is a Pomerol-styled Meritage blend that may be made of different percentages of Merlot, Cab, Petit Verdot, Cab Fran and Malbec each year.  I liked the ’06 the best, which was Merlot dominant.

At Justin I tried the ’09 Isosceles Reserve; it was ripe, with great fruit and balance.  Having just had dinner at Justin Vineyards two weeks ago, I bypassed the wines I had just tasted and zeroed in on the ’11 Isosceles too.  This vintage was Cab dominant, with the addition of Cab Franc and Merlot.

I enjoyed the ’10 Cab Franc from Le Cuvier, getting some of the same stemminess I got in their barrel tasting, as well as chocolate, fig, cigar and stewed fruits.

I heard a buzz about Le Vigne so I was happy to sample the ’06 Meritage blend called “Nikiara” and enjoyed the abundance of both fruit and spice.

Another wine I had just reviewed over a wine dinner was Opolo.  I asked about the sudden rise in production – 29 thousand cases to 75 thousand cases – and was told that it was due to demand.  I could see that the tasting table crowd was a decent example of that!

I knew I’d have something from Parrish Family at the panel discussion the next day, but I really enjoyed the opportunity to try the ’06 Cab; another Paso Cab with a great spice and fruit.

Peachy Canyon’s ’11 Devine Cab, that included 14% Merlot and 6% Cab Franc, was filled with juicy fruit and chocolate.  The ’07 Para Siempre, a 5-varietal blend, was still remarkably young but very enjoyable.

Pomar Junction’s ’10 Reserve Cab would age well, and for now I was happy with the tangy red fruit and smoky finish.

Red Soles Winery shared a ’11 Estate Cab that was all big fruit and tobacco.

Visiting with Vina Robles winemaker Kevin Willenborg is always fun, and fruitful! This time I enjoyed his ’10 Suendero blend that was 79% Cab and 21% Petit Verdot.  Later I tried the ’07 version, that was 86% Cab and 14% Petit Verdot…I may have liked the ’10 a wee bit better!

The Goddess of Wine Reports: Garagiste Sneak Preview

October 31, 2011 by evebushman

Goddess of Wine, Denise Lowe, at Garagiste preview. Photo by Xochitl Maiman

When both Michael Perlis and I both couldn’t attend the Garagiste Sneak Preview at The Cellar, I worried!  But then, lo and behold, an e-mail from the Goddess of Wine, aka Denise Lowe, appeared and, yes, she would go and yes, she would share the event with readers.  This woman is amazing at attending so may events!  Thank you Goddess!

Made a last minute decision to hit the road to visit The Cellar in Santa Clarita last Thursday. Why? Because there was a special ‘sneak peek’ at a few wineries who will be participating in the upcoming Paso Garagiste festival on November 12th. As I’m a big fan of Paso wines, and will be heading to the event next month, I thought I’d get a head start. I hadn’t been there in quite a while, so it was nice to catch up with owner DiMaggio Washington and his talented crew. The event was perfect – small enough to give me a chance to really visit with the winemakers (or their reps), and large enough to taste a bunch of wines!

I started in the back room with Lisa Dinsmore – one of the folks behind Paso Garagiste, along with Doug Minnick and Dan Erland Andersen – pouring Carlson and Red Zeppelin wines.

There were a lot of wines to taste. Highlights include:

Carlson Wines – Winemaker Chuck Carlson

2008 Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir – My fave of the 3 Pinots being offered. Medium light garnet color. Spice and raspberries in the nose. Tobacco and mushroom with some earth in the mouth. A nicely balanced wine. Should age well.

Red Zeppelin – Winemaker Stillman Brown

2005 Monterey County Syrah, Bear Valley Vineyard -Spicy red cherry with some minerality, cedar notes and a yummy long finish. Yummy is a technical term.

Les Deux Chats – Winemakers Chris & Patty Connelly

2009 Roussanne – Filtered – Lovely minerality from this delicious Roussanne from the Ripken Vineyard in Lodi. No oak, just soft fruit balanced with just the right amount of acid on the finish.

2010 Roussanne – Unfiltered – A bit more viscous quality in the mouth than the 2009. Still very young. I’d like to try it again in a year.

Tercero Wines – Winemaker Larry Schaffer – who poured a whole bunch of wines not on the list! My faves:

2007 The Climb (Petit Sirah/Syrah) – Just a wonderful blend of two of my favorite grapes. Big. Fruity. Needed a big grilled steak.

2010 Mourvedre Rosé – This is one of my favorite CA Rosés. Dry as a bone, beautiful color. Crisp. Yum.

AmByth Estate – Winemaker Phillip Hart – Biodynamic farming at its best. Beautiful blends. And low alcohol. It CAN be done.

2009 Priscus – 46% Grenache Blanc/25% Viognier/17% Roussanne/12% Marsanne – Peaches and apples in the nose and the palate, too. Very crisp and refreshing. The perfect palate cleanser!

2010 Counoise – 100% Counoise. Surprising and tasty. And only 12% alcohol.

Stanger Vineyards – Manager JP French pouring

2006 Stanger Vineyards Syrah Library Reserve – Deep and dark purple, coffee and anise in the nose. The ultra-ripe fruit flavors provide a long finish. Liked this wine a lot.

So that’s the sneak peak. I can hardly wait for the big event!
