August 2008 Vintage Eve: Meeting Local Winemakers

August 22, 2014 by evebushman

My husband Eddie and I spending a day wine tasting in Santa Clarita (SCV) is not news. But wine tasting at two different vineyards within ten minutes of our house in SCV is.

Event planner Jeannie Carpenter with guests Betty and Luke Herme

Chris and Jeannie Carpenter of Newhall have a cellar I have long coveted. Free standing and temperature controlled, with an attached sitting room, it is normally filled with exceptional wine. But on this day it was also filled with oak barrels to sample from and a “wine thief” (think classy turkey baster) to sample with.

“We have what you call a collective co-op,” Chris began. “Three couples and a single winemaker. We had 500 pounds of Cabernet that we made into 30 gallons. Two 26 gallon half barrels – they’re easier to move and hold plenty of wine anyway -makes about 35 bottles per couple.”

“The grapes are all from a local grower in Bouquet Canyon. During the crush the grapes are ‘popped’, cleaned, covered, slosh around in a truck getting here and then we ferment it for a month with the skins on.”

“Our ‘Lost Pruners’ vintage was the last one we made. We will age the new one in American oak for about 4-5 more months. The wood softens the wine, but we have the remaining juice in glass containers. If it happens to be too ‘oaky’, we’ll blend them to taste. We are also making a Barolo style from 100% Nebbiolo grapes from Santa Ynez. It will be a little drier and needs one more year before taking home.”

At this point Chris checks his composition book to tell us that his “Cabernet Tempranillo was first bottled in July of 07.”

We asked how in the heck he learned how to do this and he said, “Reading a lot and learning by mistakes. I also tried to do everything my favorite winemaker from Saxum did; right down to picking his brain and planting the same grapes. The 200 vines we’re growing are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre that we’ll use to make a Southern Rhone-style blend. I’ve learned a lot from collaborating with my friend, Roman Weiser (another Newhall grower) on the crafting of these wines.”

We reluctantly head away from the cellar and out to take a look at the vines. Jeannie took charge of our tour then. “I plan on having Assistance League fundraisers here,” Jeannie said. “To support our community.”

She then introduced us to her brother-in-law, Tim Carpenter, who had named the “Compa Vineyards” in memory of his dog, who was lovingly seen as a true “compadre”.

“You can come back for the grape stomp,” Chris added. “We may do that next time. Until then we let the grapes drop, to give structure to our 2009 harvest.” We’re there.

Then, back in the car, we drove ten minutes to Two Hearts Vineyard, this time into the hills above Hasley Canyon and to the beautiful home of Kerry and Susie (not Suzie Q.) Clark. And, even though they were in the midst of preparing for a wedding, it didn’t prevent them from being gracious hosts to an impromptu wine tasting.

Kerry and Susie Clark and 1/3 of the different varietals they had to share!

Kerry and Susie Clark and 1/3 of the different varietals they had to share!

With a 4 year old all organic vineyard they have just a bit over 200 vines. Growing Rhone reds, Primitivo, Cabernet and Barbera; whites include Colombard, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and White Malvasia.

“We are strictly amateur winemakers for now so we either drink our wine or give it away,” Susie reported. “We also buy grapes (Paso, Santa Barbara, and Lodi), and juice (Napa, Washington, Australia and Austria) and even use wine kits. We have won quite a few awards for our wine in the past few years. Last month we received 5 medals at the 2008 Wine Maker International Amateur Wine Competition.”

“There were over 4,300 entries from 6 different countries making it the largest wine competition of any kind – commercial or amateur – in North America. Our 2006 Cat Canyon Santa Barbara County Sangiovese won a gold medal and the 06 Sangio-Cab blend took a silver. The 2006 and 2007 Gruner-Veltliner both took gold medals and the 07 Viognier got a silver. Our wines have won awards at other competitions including the California State Fair and the L.A. Cellarmasters U.S. Winemaking Competition”.

“We enjoy the competitions as professional judges give us feedback on our wines”.

It was a hell of a tasting. I had a hard time pouring out any of the wines Kerry had us taste. But the warm weather, excellent learning experience along with the subtle cheeses, fruits and meats, all increased our pairing experience.

“It all happened by accident,” Kerry explained.

“We were invited to go to Napa and all I thought was that I didn’t need any auto parts.” There was a jokester in this winemaker. “Now we have a hard time taking a vacation at all because we can’t predict when the grapes are going to be ready for pick up, tasting and testing.”

“I enjoy writing the labels,” Kerry said. “I think every wine has a story to tell. My labels help tell the story of what’s in the bottle. Wine should be fun!” My husband read one of his quips, “Be a mellow fellow – drink Bordello Verdello” on the 2006 Mullaro Creek and “GRU-V” the 2006 Gruner Veltliner.

“Making wine isn’t hard,” Kerry continues, “But making good wine is. We started making small batches of beer before we lived in this house. And it was actually more complex with grinding grains and adding caramel. We had names like Brain Dead Red and Liver Killer Lager. Beer should be fun too!”

“We are also very green conscious: This is not a Rombauer Chardonnay, it’s my French Colombard, and we just reused the bottle.” Other wine making tips include oak cubes and stays and a cold fermentation process that “keeps the whites delicate.”  Kerry added, “In blending my own wines I can make my own decisions and make them consistent, I’m a slave to nature. But we don’t try to strong arm our grapes to taste a certain way, we go where the grapes take us.”

So do I.

August 6, 2014 by evebushman

Where else to grab a beer than the Vine 2 Wine Classic! Did I just read that right, you ask? Beer at a wine event?  You absolutely read that correctly. In the past, Circle of Hope’s Vine 2 Wine Classic has had a beer garden, which started out with 3 beers in 2011, then 6 beers in 2012. Last year, the 2013’s Vine 2 Wine Classic brought out 12 different beers to taste in the Moe Hafizi Beer Garden at CALARTS, which was a great success, and one we didn’t think we could top!  Well, 2014 Circle of Hope Inc. and the Vine 2 Wine Classic committee is introducing our Barley 2 Brew section that will join our amazing Vine 2 Wine wineries in the main gallery, again at CALARTS this year. Here you will find 30 different Craft Brews, which will offer 60 plus different tastings for your pleasure, encompassing 60 feet of beer bliss. We are very excited to team up with Simon & Shannon Mee, owners of the Newhall Refinery Gastro Pub and the Egg Plantation, to provide us with a great line up of beers to taste. Here is a list of who will be there as of this article release:

Do you prefer an American Pale Ale like Stone Pale Ale or a Robust Porter like Deschutes Black Butte, or does your taste lie somewhere in between?  If you’d like to learn more about the many styles of craft beer being produced this is a great opportunity to sample a vast variety of beers and decide for yourself. If you’re a beer aficionado you won’t want to miss this event. The Vine 2 Wine Classic is August 16th at CALARTS from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m.

Local crooner Jimmy Carnelli and his band will be providing the entertainment again this year. If you want to work off some of your food or libations, you can cut a rug on the Vine 2 Wine Classic dance floor!

If you haven’t attended the Circle of Hopes Vine 2 Wine Classic, you don’t want to miss it this year. Several guests from last year commented that they had no idea how large this event was.

Rebel Coast Winery Rated 95 Points… “By Your Mom”

July 4, 2014 by evebushman

It’s a great honor to have a winery owner make an appointment to hand deliver his latest wine to me at my home.  Now, lest you begin to think, what a fancy schmancy winery it is let me explain:

  1. Rebel Coast Winery is run by, well, rebels in the wine industry, including Kate Sieberlich, and winemaker Chip Forsythe.  My visitor, owner Doug Burkett, whose business card reads “VP of Sales, Pro Mechanical Bullrider”, also has his cell number imprinted onto the corks. Doug is there for his customers, literally, and they call and text photos to him often.
  2. Doug is known to sell or give away wine, one instance involved newlyweds in a car next to his VW Van…driving on the freeway.  He said he’s handed wine through a car window at least 30 times.
  3. When you see Doug pouring at an event ask him to saber off the top of a bottle.  The organizers don’t approve, but, again, they are rebels. Or what Doug likes to say, “We’re not your parent’s winery.”
  4. Rebel Coast Winery bottles don’t have labels, instead they have the information screen printed in glow in the dark ink.
  5. Marketing “accessories” include car dent covers with a drawing of Chip’s signature mustache with sayings such as “Mustache: it’s like yoga pants for your face”, “Lets got wine tasting on the couch tonight”, “Who wants a Mustache Ride?” and “Don’t be a dick.”  The dick reference is to all of Champagne, France,  that complained when Rebel’s Pink Panda sparkling wine debuted, and though the bottle didn’t say Champagne the rebels used the term in their marketing.
  6. More accessories include banners and table talkers with photos of film and TV stars – again, no copyright infringement intended but the rebels will respond to an order to cease and desist.  And my personal favorite, a bottle neck hanger that reads “Rated 95 Points” on one side and on the other it says, “By Your MOM!  *Zing*”
  7. After Doug’s visit with me he also visited Newhall Refinery and Pinot’s Palette, so look for their new 2012 Reckless Love when you visit either.  They are now in 9 states, including Canada.  Their big clients at the moment are in Texas, Wisconsin and Ohio.  And look for their tasting room in Sonoma Square to open in 8 months.
  8. Of final note, Doug said the perception of a winemaker is that they are somehow “untouchable” and the rebels are never going to want to be perceived that way.

Rebel Coast Winery 2012 :reckless loveTasting 2012 Reckless Love

A blend of  Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley, Sonoma; and Syrah from the Westside of Paso Robles.  14 % (admitted) alcohol.

Back side: I don’t want to give this away completely, but I will say that the statements written on the bottle prompt the buyer to ignore their parent’s advice, kiss a stranger and enjoy a wild night of reckless love.  Now, let’s see how the wine tastes:

Aroma: A bowl full of crushed red, blue and black berries, cracked black pepper, roasted meat, wet bark and milk chocolate.  Not a bad combination.

Flavor: Good round mouthfeel, juicy, mild tannins, blueberry, blackberry, mid palate spice but fruit overpowered that, and then the spice comes back at the finish.  Definitely drink now, be a rebel.

More Information From Circle of Hope

Now named the Vine 2 Wine Classic, and in its 12th year, this blockbuster of an event combines the highlights from the previous Vine 2 Wine, which had been sponsored for nine years by the Betty Ferguson Foundation, and the Santa Clarita Valley Wine Classic, which, for 20 years, had been sponsored by College of the Canyons and attracted more than 50 wineries and 750 people.

Last year’s Vine 2 Wine Classic featured unlimited tastings of several hundred upscale wines poured by dozens of outstanding wineries and by donors of fabulous and rare, older, “library wines” from their personal cellars, at more than 40 tables. Our beer garden featured unlimited tastes of almost a dozen craft brews, and everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner, confections provided by local merchants, and live music, all for the single price of admission.

We anticipate a sell-out crowd of 750 people (we attracted a crowd of more than 600 last year), as the event returns to CalArts – the location of the former SCV Wine Classic. This year, in addition to live music, there will be a silent auction of current and older vintages of fabulous wines, and much, much more. www.vine2wineclassic.com

Newhall Refinery: Open!

May 29, 2013 by evebushman

I attended one of the sneak peek parties as press over the weekend at Newhall Refinery, located just across from the Pulchella Winery tasting room on Main street.  The restaurant opened to the public at 4pm on May 28, no reservations needed.

center of the actionThe interior is flawlessly laid out (friend Kelly A. told me to get a seat at the “Chef’s Counter” to watch the action and I was not disappointed), great wood accents and plenty of seating.

The “Gastro Pub” menu was eclectic. Of the “small bites” I sampled the house BBQ chips, garlic/parsley fries and Crab Hush Puppies.  The “big bites” I tried were the White Fish Croquettes and Shepherds’ Sliders.  All excellent, reasonably priced (nothing over $9), and they promised even more additions by opening day.  There was a full page of craft beers (I had a little sampler) and a few wines by the bottle or glass (a lot of us enjoyed the Justin Cabernet).

Owners Simon and Shannon Mee, also owners of the popular Egg Plantation, greeted guests (Shannon on crutches due to a recent food injury happily hobbled along) and kept things moving with General Manager Alex Mclaughlin (formerly the head waiter at Maru in the mall until they closed) and Executive Chef Cynthia Lara who is a graduate of our own College of the Canyons Culinary Arts Department under the tutelage of Chef Cindy Schwanke.beer sampler

All in all, there wasn’t anything I didn’t like!  Looking forward to gastro pubbing it again soon.

Brought to you by Reyes Winery: The Inaugural Sierra Pelona Wine Fest

April 26, 2013 by evebushman

Your little every-ready bunny (not-so-fresh from the tummy flu) did her best to cover the first Sierra Pelona Wine Fest hosted by Reyes Winery last Saturday.  It was an event locals just couldn’t miss – as it seemed that I ran into friends at every tasting table!

The weather, albeit a little windy, was picture perfect – lots of people snapped lots of photos – and a beautiful frame was set to check out new wines, foods and lifestyle vendors.

Each guest was handed a swag bag with several goodies, including a program (thanks for the shout out to Eve’s Wine 101 Consulting that helped market the event to Santa Clarita folks) and a Save the Date notice for next year’s event: April 26, 2014.  A portion of the ticket sales benefited the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Foundation.

Story

Reyes Winery was fresh from winning three medals – the day before the fest – at the Critics Challenge International Wine Competition!  One more reason to give them a taste, eh?

Reyes Winery borders Agua Dulce Winery, and Steve Wizan, the General Manager for Agua Dulce Winery was having fun entertaining tasters and talking about his own winery’s upcoming events.

Donna Harris is the winemaker for the Harris Wine Biz.  She is making wine from the vineyards formerly owned by Leona Valley.  Harris said she obtained the land via a short sale and it was a good purchase.  At their booth the wines were paired with several Pampered Chef items.  Apparently you can contact them to schedule a wine tasting and Pampered Chef party combined.  Donna bottled wines just for us to taste that day, so we had a barrel tasting.  I enjoyed her 2011 Petit Verdot the most.

Juan Alonso, chef and owner of Le Chene, served up some cured meats next door to his winemaking partner, Stephen Hemmert.  As usual, these two friends pair well together.

Thomas Lukas was very popular with his non-commercial wines from his “Bobcat Winery.”  Thomas makes wines with local grapes, along with some of his local winemaking pals, and it’s always interesting to see what different winemakers will do with the same grapes.

Sharon Lindquist, my wine pal that is also a Dove Chocolatier, had some kind of chocolate and cinnamon coated almonds and a decadent orange truffle.  The first made my mouth water for the second.

Sharon Lindquist

Two Hearts Vineyard, hands-down, was creating a buzz at the fest.  I adore Kerry and Susie Clark, the winemaking couple that buys local grapes and juice from all over the globe to create dozens of varietals.  My husband and I have been fans for years (Ed loves the Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and I love those and the whites too).  Not going commercial, I’m hoping to convince Susie to create a Facebook page so people can learn where they will be pouring next as they support many wine events.

I wish I could have stopped at the Mascari Vineyard table, but it was packed.  I’ve had Danny Mascari wines every year, so no doubt a new crowd had their turn!

Teri Diamond, the artist behind Precision Cutting and Engraving, is a local engraver in Santa Clarita that loves to do personalization with wine – creating unique wine charms, working with wood, glass and more.  Teri had recently donated two lovely wine glasses to our WiSH event, engraved with charging horses, and today she surprised me with a bottle of J. Lohr Cabernet engraved with my name on it! TeriDiamond@sbcglobal.net

Teri Diamond, Precision Cutting & Engraving

Pulchella Winery, another winery that pours at local events but also has a tasting room in downtown Newhall, was also very popular at the fest.  Both owners/winemakers Nate Hasper and Steve Lemley were there.  I was happy to see my friend, and fellow wine writer, Denise Lowe setting up some time for a private interview with these two remarkable men.

Custom Caterers, located right in Newhall, served up an amazing Ahi Poke and seared Ahi skewers.  The owner, Richard Ortiz, used to own La Rumba.  I’d like to see them at MORE events.

Santa Paula Distributors had several spirits (rum, tequila and vodka) I was itching to try…but my tummy was not up for that.  Come to find out that they are right here in Castaic, so I’m hoping for a “make-up” tasting soon.

From Cheers@All Corked Up, Ada, owner Al Robles’ sister-in-law, was serving awesome spinach empanadas.  Al, along with co-owner Terri Rivera, are often asked to share their foods at events; and we’re lucky to have them!

Cyndee Donato, a partner at Antelope Valley Winery, was also doing a swift business of pouring for guests that hadn’t made it out to the AV for their wines.

Cindy Smith, formerly of local RSVP Catering, had people clamoring to try her spicy Bacon Jam…and other delectable treats from her new company, Red Haute, at the same location in Newhall.  661-291-1155

Chocolatier Vladimir, Truffles n' Toffee

Truffles n’ Toffee, was serving up homemade chocolates that were infused only with Reyes Winery wines.  People readily paid $15 for a box of 9 little guys nestled in a box.  See their entire line-up of chocolates on their website, my husband loves their toffee.

Coruce Vineyards, making wine with grapes grown in Sierra Pelona vineyards, and then they are sent to Bob Balentine in Paso Robles to turn the grapes into wines.  I enjoyed the 2012 Paso Viognier.  info@CoruceVineyards.com
