Newhall Refinery’s First Valentine’s Day Dinner is Woo Hoo Worthy!

February 3, 2016 by evebushman

Local favorite Newhall Refinery in downtown Newhall is being transformed into a romantic getaway for one night only for singles, couples and groups – for the first time – this Valentine’s Day, Sunday, February 14. (And the next day is a holiday – President’s Day!)

invite for valentines at Newhall Refinery

You simply need to choose:

A 5pm or 8pm seating

Wine or Beer Flight

Which starter, entrée and sweet you would like prepared by Executive Chef Dustin Boole – see our menu below!

newhall refinery valentines day menu

But you don’t need to choose:

Where to park you car – we have complimentary valet for the evening.

From our normal menu, as we will have a special menu that will be delivered via a new “burning” presentation for this evening only.

Is there a better way to show your loved one how much you appreciate them other than to take them out to a four-course candlelight dinner, with their choice of either a beer or wine flight, serenaded by live music, a table fitted with linens, candles and flowers – and valet parking?

$165 per couple.

E-mail sercek.refinery@gmail.com or call 661-388-4477, for reservations and pricing.

Q and A for Cocktails on the Roof

wish martini glass for profile picWe’ve been getting a few questions about our Cocktails on the Roof event, so, to keep our positive buzz going we’d thought we’d attack them head on. (And watch our spot on SCVTV here.)

1. Will there be enough food for this to be dinner? With over a dozen restaurants, and about a half dozen specialty food vendors, we should be able to keep both your plate and glass full. (This event is all-inclusive!)

2. What should we wear? As this is a premier cocktail event, cocktail attire of course! But please dress comfortably because we want you, our guests, to be comfortable! (For volunteers and vendors: We want you to be comfortable too, just keep in mind that this is a school district fundraiser and dress appropriately.)

3. Can we keep going past 11pm? Sure, if you want to help clean up! Honestly, we think three hours of drinking, eating, dancing and visiting is plenty. But if you want to continue having fun please visit any participating vendors that will be open past 11pm!

4. Where do we park? You can park in all of the levels of the Macy parking garage and take the elevator up to the party. Note: You can also leave a car overnight at the Macy’s lot and retrieve after 9am the next morning.

5. Can you get tickets at the door with cash, check or credit card? Yes, but the price raises to $95 per person. If we are sold out prior to the event we will make an announcement on social media.
https://www.parkviewortho.com/wp-content/languages/new/lexapro.html

We would suggest that you
get your tickets online now.

6. Should I download Uber before I come? Yes! We also have contacted Designated Drivers of SCV (they drive you and your car home: 661-313-8336) to be on alert. Not to mention the Hyatt is just a block away. And there is plenty of non-alocholic beverages, food, dancing for your designated driver to attend for $55.

7. How big is the mini martini glass we will be given for tasting? Three – refillable – ounces so hold onto your personal keepsake glass!

#8: Tell us about the WiSH organization, the beneficiary of the money raised? The WiSH Education Foundation exists to support the 23,000 students in the Wm. S. Hart School District. WiSH benefits students in Science, Technology, the arts and other areas that enhance academic and career success. WiSH is RAISING THE BAR FOR OUR KIDS!

9. Will I get enough to drink? With bartenders from a dozen restaurants and about 10 spirit vendors, there will be more than enough. Please drink responsibly by pouring out drinks you don’t care for. Also be mindful if you are not used to drinking different kinds of liquor. We also will have lounge seating, plenty of water and a coffee vendor.

10. It looks like your vendor spots are all filled, nearly ten more than we had planned at the last event, are there sponsorship possibilities for those businesses that want to be included in the buzz? Okay, we made up that last question but it’s a good one. Our event is made possible by ticket sales, but is majorly assisted by our generous sponsors. Our entry level sponsor, at only a $1,000 contribution, still gets advertising, social networking, signage and tickets!

Still have questions? Email: WiSH@hartdistrict.org

Vintage Beacon Circa Nov. 2010: How was Sunset in the Vineyard

August 4, 2015 by evebushman

Held at the private homes and vineyards of Chris, Jeannie and Tim Carpenter, the third annual Sunset in the Vineyard drew hundreds of supporters of the efforts of both the Assistance League (AL) and the Santa Clarita Valley Vintners and Growers Association.

The Wine

Les Deux Chats winesHere is the wine line-up from Jeannie Carpenter, host of Sunset in the Vineyard: “Randy Bartlett from ‘Four Joe’s”, the Clark’s from ‘Two Hearts Vineyard’, Steve Lemley and Nate Hasper from ‘Pulchella’, the Chris and Patty Connolly from ‘Les Deux Chats’, Tom and Jenny Lukas, Jeff and Ed Campuano from ‘Campuano Family Wines’, Danny Mascari from ‘Bouquet Vineyard’, Juan Alonso owner of Le Chene, Stephen Hemmert, Kevin and Sandy Browne, DeRobertis Custom Cheese, Chris Carpenter, Tim Carpenter – Compa Vineyard…”

During the event guests were treated to breaking news from two of the local winemakers present that day: Pulchella’s tasting room will soon be open in downtown Newhall and Les Deux Chats just went commercial.

And for the very first time I didn’t balance pen and paper at a wine event. My loving-husband, Eddie, adorned me with a hand-held video camera to record my interviews and scenes. There are about a dozen you can look over, all less than two minutes long at Eve’s Wine 101 You Tube channel (link).

But, in case you prefer to read, I will tell you that I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed myself. I tasted some Rhone varietals – Mourvedre being a standout from both Juan Alonso and Four Joes, a newly barreled port from Chris Carpenter, a blend from Browne Family Wines, a Zin from Les Deux Chats, barrel samples from Pulchella (They had no less than a dozen wines presented), everything Kerry and Susie’s Two Hearts made especially Susie’s favorite Chardonnay, Danny Mascari’s Cabernet…

My only problem was that I didn’t get to everyone’s wines, or every wine in everyone’s lineup! Maybe next year I’ll just have to try harder…

Food, and more, by Assistance League of Santa Clarita

Instead of the expected appetizers when guests revisit a venue, the Assistance League Chefs, organized by Betty Rabin-Fung and Bobbi Welton, wowed the crowd with an entirely new, and unexpected menu for their wine pairings:

  • Assorted cheeses with baguettes and crackers
  • Warm brie with homemade fig jam and crushed walnuts
  • Goat  cheese Torta with sundried tomato and basil pesto
  • Savory squash soup with crushed pepitas
  • Miniature caprese salad
  • Pastel de Elote
  • Canapés of rare roast beef with horseradish sauce and roasted red peppers
  • Dates stuffed with roasted almonds and wrapped with Prosciutto
  • Brownie bites with chocolate Ganache

Raffle items included more than one night’s stay at Meadowood Napa Valley, and plenty of gourmet baskets with wines, oils cheeses & gift cards. New this year were high-end vintage coats, hats, jewelry and handbags displayed as part of a “Boutique” that highlighted the fabulous items that can be found at the AL resale shop, Take Two, on Main Street in downtown Newhall.

Who Was Seen

Jim and Monica McClafferty, Chris and Jeannie Carpenter, John and Jackie Hamby, Rick and Betty Rabin-Fung, Ron Horton and Stephanie Laney, Perry and Kim Mangers, Laurie Ender, Bob and Margo Hudson, Robert and Annie Schwartz, Jeff and Joan Jacobson, Danny and Nina Mascari, Steve and Megan Lemley, Nate and Jennifer Hasper, Leah Granen, Rose White, Bobbi Welton, Judy Penman, Ann Schwartz, Mark and Ginger LeVang, Juan Alonso, Kerry and Susie Clark, Elizabeth Teagle, BJ and Jeanne Atkins, Lois Bauccio, Leila Rosenberger, Michele Buttelman, Corry and Carol DeRobertis, Stephen Hemmert, Jo Ann Vindigni, Cheryl Gray, Chris and Patty Connolly, Robert Schwemmer, Doug Gould and Lisa Cole, Derrick and Maureen McKaughan, Betsy Linn, Cheryl Phillips, Kathy Phillips, Chuck and Marca Johnson, David and Chris Tanner, Bruce Fortine and Gloria Mercado-Fortine, Tomas and Jenny Lukas, Ann and Rob Piscetello and all of the wonderful volunteers.

Newhall Refinery Brings Craft Cocktails to SCV in a Big Way – Starting March 31!

March 31, 2015 by evebushman

Overdue. That’s what we are here in SCV, overdue for the craft cocktail invasion. Mixers, Roman Holiday and SAKE all had some great versions of old cocktails revived with top shelf spirits combined with muddled fruit and spices, fresh fruit purees, garnish, the correct glassware and captivating presentations.

But with all of them now closed I longed for a craft cocktail bar to open – and then I learned that Newhall Refinery, an already popular spot in downtown Newhall that recently expanded, had obtained a spirits license with the intention of creating a craft cocktail menu…and a whisky list as well! I quickly emailed the owners, Shannon and Simon Mee, for more information.

The new additions will first be offered on Tuesday, March 31, with eight signature cocktails – see the full menu below.

“They all taste amazing – we’re really excited and think they will be a hit,” Shannon Mee said. “I’m not aware of anywhere else out here that’s doing this and in addition we will have a big emphases on whisky. As you know bourbon and other whisky are really hot right now – and we will have at least 20 whiskys served with the proper large sphere ice cubes.”

Jan 2009 Vintage Beacon: The Single Malt Scotch Tasting Phase One: Planning

November 4, 2014 by evebushman

My husband Eddie auctioned off a single malt Scotch tasting in our home, for 6 guests, this past November. The event is now coming up on January 10. Some of our friends have threatened to join our group and we might take them…for a price.

Scotch tasting @1999

Scotch tasting @1999

I visited Cookbooks Plus on Main Street in Newhall and found a rare copy of “Enjoying Scotch” by Dion Pattullo and Derek Cooper. As the “Water of Life” has been made in Scotland for over 200 years it didn’t matter that my edition was from 1980. Not much has changed in how Scotch has been produced. At least it’s not illegal anymore.

I’ve been bantering with Eddie across our u-shaped desk about how Lagavulin failed to copy Laphroig with its replica stills, water and land while Balvenie was developed by the Glenfiddich family using the same malt and water, again with the same findings: taste could not be duplicated.

So, back to making our plans, we printed tasting sheets, maps of the lowlands and highlands of Scotland and are deciding if we want to use our many existing wine glasses or purchase some new glasses. Either type can be used; depending on how serious we want to get.

In tasting single malts the purist will at first pour a “dram” – small 1/2 to 2 ounce pour – without water or ice into the very-accepting vessel. (Preferably a glass and not the gaping mouth of the over-zealous taster.) So that is why any glassware, glass being important for tasting any liquor, is appropriate. Riedel makes a reasonably priced connoisseur Scotch tasting glass that looks like a tulip shaped wine glass. They would be nice for the tasting but for drinking we like the look and weighty feel of crystal double old fashioned glasses.

Then, as in a wine tasting, the guests are encouraged to smell, swirl and taste.

But, not like a wine tasting, we will then prompt our guests to do it all again…this time with a little water added. And, like aerating a wine, adding water to Scotch will change its taste.

I ordered 3 sets of spherical ice cube trays from MoMA (Museum of Modern Art in New York). The trays only holds 2 “large ice spheres” each of a 2 inch diameter. I had a single malt Scotch “On the Rock” at an upscale restaurant in Pasadena a few years ago and had never seen them since. The idea behind the “rock”, as opposed to the “rocks”, is that for a single malt a single large cube (or ball as the case may be) will melt slower thereby diluting the Scotch less. I don’t have enough for the tasting but just enough to show them off as a novelty to our guests.

Then, as we continue to travel Scotland Eddie will pull out his map…and we both will try and recall what our teachers said about when single malts will loose their easy smoothness and dip into peat territory. Or what I like to say: “This smells like a wet Band Aid.” Or Eddie, “Bad day at work, pour me some angry Scotch please.”

We will pair some light appetizers along with the different selections, and, most likely, take breaks so our guests can take their time, make some notes and not become too intoxicated.

But, as most tasting parties go at our humble abode…eventually it becomes a memorable evening that was centered on liquor. We have fun. We laugh. We make fun of our friends. So…we expect that our guests will leave with a little education and a long shopping list. In the meantime, feel free to suggest any Scotch, pairings…or a rich distributor that wants press.

Perlis Picked: Vine 2 Wine and Barley 2 Beer

August 30, 2014 by evebushman

Circle of Hope has been helping cancer patients since 2004. Initially providing support to breast cancer patients, the organization now helps sufferers of a variety of cancers, including not only breast cancer, but also colon, cervical, ovarian, prostate, testicular and uterine cancer.

vine 2 wine classic 2014 logoOf especial interest to Eve Wine 101ers is the spectacular Vine 2 Wine annual fundraiser held at California Institute of the Arts. This year’s event was held Saturday evening. August 16th. Through the efforts of Executive Director Ray Tippet and a host of other individuals, a fantastic selection of wines, beers and food were provided to an appreciative crowd of Santa Claritans.  (EDITOR’S NOTE: I got an email from Ray Tippet and this event…drum roll please…earned Circle of Hope $40,000!  And that’s $15,000 over last year!  We were very pleased to lend a hand in marketing the event  – pro bono – for this very worthwhile homegrown non-profit!)

Wines were poured by winery representatives as well as a number of volunteers from the Santa Clarita Valley. Wines from the following wineries were offered:

A special thank you to the Schwartz and Carpenter families, who graciously and generously poured library wines from their personal cellars.

And the Pisoni winery donated enough of their Lucy Rose so that each guest could not only taste it at the event but take home a bottle as well.

But there was more than wine at this event. Thanks to the efforts of Shannon and Simon Mee, owners of the popular Newhall Refinery, the following breweries were represented in the “Barley 2 Beer” section:

Alaskan Brewing Co.

Anderson Valley Brewing Co.

Angel City Brewery

Deschutes Brewery

Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

Firestone Walker Brewing Co.

Golden Road Brewing

Kinetic Brewing Co.

The evening was made complete by the great singing of Jimmy Carnelli. There was even a dance floor to work off some of the calories being consumed!

And, after the event, I received the following email from the owners of Golden Star Vineyards offering even more:
