From Apogee 21: Reviews of Casazul Tequilas

Two years ago, at the WSWA Conference (Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America) I was thrilled to see my old chum Mark Newman, who is with Apogee 21 Holdings Inc, manning a large booth. I sampled quite a few items, including their Monkey in Paradise vodka and Andale tequila at that time – both winners and reviewed in this website.

Fast forward to this year and Mark sent me home with four bottles of Rose from Provence (review coming), and a new-to-me tequila brand: Casazul – one word – and 100% agave. All three – silver, anejo and extra anejo  – are 80 proof/40% alcohol. Descriptions for the Silver and Extra Anejo I found on https://caskcartel.com/, then below their notes are my tasting notes:

Casazul Tequila Silver

100% Tequiliana Weber Blue Agave, unaged, double distilled, luminous with silver nuances and a great body.

EB: Clear and clean coloring; aromas that reminded me of orange peel, limeade, vanilla bean, and minerals; while the flavors still had that citrus, there was also peppery notes, some cream on the palate, and a lengthy hot finish. Loved the creamy notes against the peppery ones.

Casazul Tequila Anejo

No information that I could find online, but know that any Anejo ages one to three years and typically in oak barrels.

EB: Golden honey in hue, clear and clean; the nose gave way to most likely a bourbon oak barrel aging, pineapple, banana chips, whipped cream, and cinnamon sticks; on the mouth I noted a roundness, balanced spices, dried fruits, macadamia nut and butterscotch hard candy; on the finish I got lingering plantains – interesting.

Casazul Tequila Extra Anejo

100% Tequiliana Weber Blue Agave, double distilled, and aged a minimum of three years in American oak barrels.

EB: The color of dark gold with a clear edge, clean; wafting up from my tasting glass was toasted oak, sweet char, milk chocolate, toffee peanuts, and fruitcake; going in for the taste I could feel both sweet and spicy notes, slightly oily on the palate, then the chocolate, nuts and fruits as well. Nice one to sip. Whiskey drinkers would like this one.
