Roebuck and Bushman One Bottle Post: 2012 Beringer Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Recently I changed up one of my one-bottle posts (2012 Joseph Phelps Insignia) to include reviews and tasting notes from critics, and my wine-collecting pal with an excellent palate Steve Roebuck. Truth be told Steve and I tasted three bottles that night and these notes are for the second red: 2012 Beringer Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Below you will find current pricing and the scores that I found online, followed by Steve’s and then my reviews.

Pricing and Scores

Wine Searcher has the wine for $179. Wine Spectator and Cellar Tracker both gave the wine 94 points.

Steve Roebuck’s Review

Score:  94 Points

Location:  Napa Valley, California

Blend:  100% Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine was a beautiful dark red with a hint of bricking at the edge. It had a lovely bouquet of cherries, black raspberries, blueberries, cassis fruit, sage, truffle, graphite, vanilla, tar, black tea, roasted animal fat, and a kiss of wet earth. The flavor was full-bodied with rounded tannins that gave way to hints of black cherries, cassis, black raspberries, char, sage, black tea, tar, baking chocolate, vanilla, smoked dried herbs, and wet tilled earth. It was complex with lush layers of fruit and earth.  And there was a lovely bright acidity bringing balance and elegance to this rich beautiful wine. The finish was refined and focused with hints of char, savory dusty earth, and juicy berry fruits.

Highly Recommended!

Eve’s Review

I found the color of the wine to be very black. The aromas were dark and somewhat musty – but not unpleasant. It literally reminded me of being in a dark underground wine cellar. Notes of mushroom, blue fruit, sweet char and wet earth were abundant. For the taste I found it very balanced, with a bounty of spice and tannins, lots of life – with its acidity and brightness. After ten minutes in the glass I got more of a sweet note on the palate. I’d give it at least 95 points or more.
